Her first movie role was in “Pocketful of Miracles” where she played the daughter of Bette Davis? Did Bette ever make any comments about her?
She was offered “Bonnie & Clyde” and “Cat Ballou” but her agent turned them down without telling her.

Imagine how awesome she would have been as Nancy in Oliver! is she could pull off a Cockney accent. She would have made the role more sultry. She would have been nominated for an Oscar.

She was extremely lucky. Hardworking, but lucky.
And her marriage seemed really weird. Almost like Bo and John Derek’s.

I fail to see the similarities, r4. Roger and Ann were contemporaries. I'd say it was a bit more than luck. She's definitely a show biz diva who's the sum of her parts.

I thought of Ann Margret with the passing of Treat Williams this week.....During an appearance on Larry King years after the taping of Streetcar Named Desire...Larry praises the production, Ann-Margret graciously accepts the compliment, speaks about what a great experience it was......but has a complete brain fart remembering Treat Williams name....and she fumbles along.. and still can't come up with it!!
Larry comes to her rescue as I recall, but I've never forgotten it.
It could happen to anyone.......but awkward!!!

I think she would have been good in "Cat Ballou." I've never liked Jane Fonda that much--she doesn't seem natural or expressive to me. Ann-Margret's no worse than that, and she's cute, too.

I like this bizarre Canada Dry commercial she did.
by Anonymous | reply 12 | June 18, 2023 1:48 AM |
someone should write a two woman show, the action begins with Ann-Margret's doorbell ringing,
and it's Tina! she's just left Ike at the gas station and all she has is the 1.69 credit on the gas card or whatever amount it was...
take it from there....
by Anonymous | reply 13 | June 18, 2023 3:14 AM |
God, R12. She would have been 27 in that commercial, but she looks like she’s pushing 50. What happened to her?
by Anonymous | reply 14 | June 18, 2023 4:42 AM |
That commercial is long. It's like a mini AM variety show.
by Anonymous | reply 15 | June 18, 2023 5:10 AM |
R15, indeed! I kept thinking it would end and it just kept going. Maybe they split it up back in the day for separate adverts?
R14, Ann-Margret has been very candid about her alcoholism. I forget the timeline, but she might've been drinking when this was filmed.
by Anonymous | reply 16 | June 18, 2023 6:22 AM |
A nearly 17-year-old Desi Arnaz, Jr performed with her when she guest-starred on his mother's TV show. His hormones must've been raging throughout the whole shoot.

Classy, sexy, amazing lady.
Fucked Elvis. Won’t talk about it. Helped save Tina from Ike. Won’t discuss it.
Seems loyal, kind. Stable, long-lasting marriage.
She may be boring to the gossip hungry, but she seems incredibly kind and cool.
by Anonymous | reply 18 | June 18, 2023 6:53 AM |
She plays wild women and very sexy roles. She seems to be very private and a lot more quiet. You can't keep your eyes off her in movies.

As a gay man, you can still look at certain women and think, “Yeah, I can see what this heterosexual thing is about.”
Ann-Margret is that kind of woman.

She definitely upstaged Elvis in Viva Las Vegas.

R11 This year marks 60 years since I first saw Ann-Margret in the intro and outro of Bye Bye Birdie, and I am still transfixed watching her. I was a gayling then and I'm an eldergay now, but nothing has changed. Director George Sidney certainly knew how to present her in a splashy way.
Dick Van Dyke wrote in his autobiography that the "Bye Bye Birdie" song, which was not in the stage version, was written and filmed without the knowledge of the other stars of the film. Dick went to the premiere of the film with Janet Leigh. He said she had already been upset that as filming went on, the movie was more and more about Ann-Margret and less and less about her and Dick Van Dyke compared with the stage version. Dick wrote that Janet was apoplectic when she saw Ann-Margret appear on the screen at the beginning of the film, long before the story would get to her character in Ohio. Janet had to curb her anger in the theater, but I can imagine she blasted George Sidney for what he did. He even didn't let the movie end with Dick and Janet's musical number, as in the play, but brought back Ann-Margret for her own closing number.

R22 She was probably just upset about the hermaphrodite toddler she had running around the house.

Got to meet her a couple of times at CHILLER. She was very cool. Filming "Tommy" she was crawling thru the bubbles to the broken TV and cut her hand on the shattered screen. She showed me the scar where she had 27 stitches. She told me Ken Russel scooped her up and took her to the hospital himself. In the move in the scene where she is on TV in fatigues sitting at a desk, was filmed the next day and she was hiding the huge bandage on her lap.
I have the British Special Edition of "Tommy" DVD and the limited edition Blu-ray of "Bye Bye Birdie" signed by her.

She had a terrible fall off a 22 foot platform, during a performance, which resulted in many broken facial bones, a concussion and broken jaw in the early 70s.

Ann-Margret should have played Cassie in the movie version of A Chorus Line.
Yes, she was probably too old for the role (mid-40s) and yes it wouldn’t have made much sense because she has through the roof star quality, but it would have brought some pizazz to the dire proceedings.

Cassie is supposed to be a star dancer, remember? When was the last time Ann did actual musical theater choreography? She just moves and shimmies,

If you watch A Chorus Line, the “choreography” is more 1980s aerobics, probably stolen from one of Angela Lansbury’s exercise videos. Ann-Margret would have been no worse than Audrey Landers.

by Anonymous | reply 40 | June 19, 2023 3:03 AM |
I believe Bette Davis was quite complimentary about A-M. Despite making a number of lousy films in the 60s, A-M was known as hard working.
While I have never been a fan of Carnal Knowledge, it did turn her career around as Mike Nichols managed to help her rid herself of the "sex kitten" posturing that dominated her performances up to that time.
by Anonymous | reply 41 | June 19, 2023 3:49 AM |
Ann-Margret never fully rid herself of the "sex kitten" image, R41.
Movies with titles such as "Kitten With a Whip" tend to have lasting effects on a career.
by Anonymous | reply 42 | June 19, 2023 3:56 AM |
Ann-Margret spoke about how kind Bette was during the filming of Pocketful of Miracles. Bette brought filming to a halt during a scene where Ann was supposed to have her first closeup, called in the hair and makeup people, and instructed her on how to make the most of the camera angle and lighting. I have a lot of love for sexy and silly Ann-Margret, she's a hard worker and a good time gal, doesn't let self-consciousness get in the way of giving her all. I really respect that in a person. One of the last true STARS.

She was always cooing stuff like, “When a man tells me I’m sexy, it’s the highest compliment he can pay me,” to the press, so… yeah, she held onto that image herself, too.
It’s not like she was being considered for Glenda Jackson roles.
by Anonymous | reply 44 | June 19, 2023 6:35 PM |
She did wind up doing a film with Jackson: Return Of The Soldier, also with Julie Christie and Alan Bates.
A-M plays the spinster cousin of Bates' character and she holds her own quite well with the cast.
by Anonymous | reply 45 | June 19, 2023 7:57 PM |
R45 Ann-Margret's story in a nutshell. She will never be taken seriously because she's not interested in cultivating the image of a thespian. Multiple reviews of her performance as Blanche in A Streetcar Named Desire go out of their way to mention how "surprisingly" effective she is in the role. How condescending can you be? She's proven herself as a powerful actress again and again. The sex kitten image will never go away because it's so much a part of who she really is, but her ability to eschew that persona when she wants to is what makes her such an excellent actress.
by Anonymous | reply 46 | June 19, 2023 8:09 PM |
She did a heck of a lot better than Tina Louise.
by Anonymous | reply 47 | June 19, 2023 8:10 PM |
I read somewhere that Dick Van Dyke and Janet Leigh were unhappy the film version of Birdie focused more on Ann Margret than the two leads. But, there is no denying- she was lightning in a bottle . Take a look at the intro-outro sequences. 60 years years later and still pure sexual magnetism captured on screen.
by Anonymous | reply 48 | June 19, 2023 8:16 PM |
She's very enjoyable in the Grumpy Old Men films.
by Anonymous | reply 49 | June 19, 2023 8:54 PM |
R46, I don't think I was being condescending. Certainly A-M isn't the first person who comes to mind to play a WWI-era British spinster. Eileen Atkins was the director's initial choice for the role, but the producers wanted someone with a "name.". A-M's first role in a period piece was as Lady Booby in the rather bad film of Henry Fielding's Joseph Andrews, a part more in line with her sexy image. She's one of the few good things in the film. though.
I wasn't surprised by the quality of her Blanche.

Because Ann-Margret as a spinster makes so much sense. Luckily it’s the least important of the main characters.
I think Pauline Kael wrote, “What Ann-Margret is doing here is anyone’s guess, but probably has to do with the mysteries of international financing.”

Even if this has been posted already, it's worth repeating. Incredible energy. And I love how she asks Elvis at the end, "You wanna join us?" and makes that funny "choo!" sound, whatever it was supposed to be.
For the person who thinks she couldn't handle musical dance choreography and only shimmied, she trained with Gus Giordano in Chicago. I know because she told me. :)
