Joe Manchin: Sad Last Days?
David Axelrod says Senator Joe Manchin is a “dead man walking, there’s nowhere for him to go,” in reference to a new poll where Manchin trails popular Republican Governor Jim Justice (R) by 22 points.

Unlike Senator Susan Collins, i truly, really am not concerned.

by Anonymousreply 1June 8, 2023 9:53 PM

Will he announce a run for President?

by Anonymousreply 2June 8, 2023 9:54 PM

So is there a pick up plan elsewhere or are is the DNC just going to rely of the wisdom of some red state to flip blue?

by Anonymousreply 3June 8, 2023 9:57 PM

What does this "wisdom' look like you sourpuss r3?

The NDSC is looking for winnable candidates in EVERY race. Manchin was actually an almost certain Dem vote on every bill if they absolutely needed his vote. He's lost his way lately perhaps because he's already dancing as fast as can and will likely lose anyway...unless he wins!

Are you a sad Berner who thinks AOC could win a West Virginia Senate seat?

by Anonymousreply 4June 8, 2023 10:05 PM

I meant the DSCC not NDSC

by Anonymousreply 5June 8, 2023 10:10 PM

WV is lost. It will flip red no matter who runs D.

So you have to look for a pickup. Colin Allred over Ted Cruz in TX is a risky bet but the others are rock solid R. Brown also very vulnerable in OH. Gallego will get rid of Sinema, Tester will hold.

by Anonymousreply 6June 8, 2023 10:15 PM

Sinema will not run as a Dem, but she will still run. Gallego will have to win a 3-person race or sit out and make it Sinema v. GOP.

Gallego's call.

by Anonymousreply 7June 8, 2023 10:17 PM

Manchin is an asshole, but we cannot afford to lose one Democrat.

by Anonymousreply 8June 8, 2023 10:26 PM

R8 don’t disagree. But feel the cause is already lost.

by Anonymousreply 9June 8, 2023 10:27 PM

Anyone cheering this is an idiot.

That's a one less seat the rethugs need to win to regain the Senate majority.

Burn it into your stupid heads: Gorsuch, Kavanaugh, Barrett.

by Anonymousreply 10June 8, 2023 10:27 PM

This bitch again

by Anonymousreply 11June 8, 2023 10:29 PM

Manchin probably won’t run. That state is completely lost to Dems.

by Anonymousreply 12June 8, 2023 10:30 PM

*Sigh* If it wasn't for the Blue Ridge Mountains, I'd say just let the whole thing go to Ash.

by Anonymousreply 13June 8, 2023 10:37 PM

Hard map for Dems in 2024.

Biden beats Trump by 2% points, House flips back to Dems w/220 seats, Majority Leader Ernst assures nothing gets done.

Hope no Supreme Justice dies until after 2026.

by Anonymousreply 14June 8, 2023 10:41 PM

Manchin’s only hope is if the Governor loses the primary to the more MAGAt candidate.

by Anonymousreply 15June 8, 2023 10:43 PM

R14, what do you expect to happen after the ‘26 election? The Senate is likely to be under Republican control for some time to come.

by Anonymousreply 16June 8, 2023 10:46 PM

Joni Ernst as Majority Leader? Fuck that is terrifying

by Anonymousreply 17June 8, 2023 10:46 PM

How the hell does California have the same number of Senators as Wyoming? That’s the fucking problem.

by Anonymousreply 18June 8, 2023 10:48 PM

R18 - You'd have to read the Constitution to understand the answer to your question.

It's a very simple answer, actually.

by Anonymousreply 19June 8, 2023 10:49 PM

In addition to the Senate, Dems need to take a hard look at New York and understand how so many House seats there were won by Republicans. George Santos, really?

by Anonymousreply 20June 8, 2023 10:53 PM

those parts of new york are racist

by Anonymousreply 21June 8, 2023 10:55 PM

R16 Remember when Republicans looked at demography after 2012 and knew they were screwed? Then Trump happened and everyone's forgotten that.

Demography is still a real deal. US getting browner. Gen Z hating Republicans. Immigration (internal and external) to sunbelt turning red states purple: (NC, TX, AZ, NV ... even UT and KY)

And no, "oh look at Latinos and Latino evangelicals and black men and and and..." is delusion. The flow is going against Republicans... if our democracy can survive long enough.

by Anonymousreply 22June 8, 2023 10:57 PM

He’s 75. It’s time to say goodbye.

by Anonymousreply 23June 8, 2023 10:58 PM

R23 He's in his prime!

by Anonymousreply 24June 8, 2023 10:58 PM
Demography is still a real deal. US getting browner. Gen Z hating Republicans.

Republicans have gotten good at cheating to get around these issues. They know how to gerrymander states so all the “brown” people are concentrated in one district. And they pass laws to limit voting on college campuses and making mail-in harder, to deal with those R-hating Gen Z’s.

by Anonymousreply 25June 8, 2023 11:03 PM

R25 Which is one reason the Supreme Court's upholding of the Voting Rights legislation yesterday was HUGE, and largely unreported.

by Anonymousreply 26June 8, 2023 11:05 PM

I welcome the left-leaning immigrants from Central and South America.

They will FIGHT for our rights to abortion and gay marriage!

by Anonymousreply 27June 8, 2023 11:05 PM

Mexico and South American have MUCH MORE progressive legislation supporting gay rights than the red state Reaction. Keep up.... you are posting from 1995.

Dems should convince Liz Cheney to run as an I in Wyoming - no primary - and then throw their support behind her for the general if she agrees to caucus with them.

by Anonymousreply 29June 8, 2023 11:09 PM

Check into what Mark Elias is doing to fight voter suppression. Help him, if you can. Help fight it in your state, help locally. Every voter makes a difference!

by Anonymousreply 30June 8, 2023 11:13 PM

She will never caucus with Dems. She still wants abortion to be illegal, and guns to be everywhere. You know, “conservative values”. She just doesn’t believe that elections can be overturned by the loser.

by Anonymousreply 31June 8, 2023 11:13 PM

r28 - your article talks about court cases in Mexico - not legislation. But you're right. Those people coming in are totes about our right to marry people of the same sex.

by Anonymousreply 32June 8, 2023 11:13 PM

R32 Here... a long list of legislative victories for gay rights in Mexico.

Don't tease me with a good time.

by Anonymousreply 34June 8, 2023 11:36 PM

R20, Eric Adams & his constant harping on crime played a big part in that.

by Anonymousreply 35June 9, 2023 12:19 AM

Eric Adams won his primary and election, R35. If those other New York Democrats followed his lead, they might have won and the Democrats could’ve kept the House in 2022.

well not now that Twitter's limiting the number of tweets you can read. Sad face emoticon. No justice! No peas!

by Anonymousreply 39July 3, 2023 5:04 PM

Now Dems need to find another state they can pick up which will be tough. Knowing Dems of course they’ll go strong for winning issues like reparations and trans rights.

by Anonymousreply 40July 3, 2023 5:15 PM

Manchin was in no way good for the Democrats aside from the fact that he caucused with them. He could not be counted on as a reliable D vote, and in fact had to be persuaded regularly (read: bribed) to [italic]not[/italic] side with the Republicans, let alone [italic]for[/italic] the Democratic position. We don't have The John Lewis Voting Rights Act and the For the People act to protect our elections from GOP jerrymandering and cheating because of Joe Manchin.

Beyond Manchin's obstruction (and I can't neglect to point out his partner in crime, Kyrsten Sinema), he is one of the most corrupt Senators. His vote (on any subject) requires expansion of fossil fuel in West Virginia, where he owns a coal mine. His daughter is the CEO of the big pharma company that tried to jack the price of insulin something like 6000%. There is no piece of legislation that moves through the Senate that doesn't make Joe Manchin a ton of money.

by Anonymousreply 41July 3, 2023 5:18 PM
Manchin was in no way good for the Democrats aside from the fact that he caucused with them.

Other than that, how was the play, Mrs. Lincoln?

Manchin caucusing with the Democrats was the difference between the Senate under the control of Chuck Schumer & one under the control of Mitch McConnell.
He could not be counted on as a reliable D vote

As a Democratic Senator from, of all unlikely places, West Bugtussle, he was a pretty reliable vote for all of Biden's judicial picks, including Justice Jackson.

by Anonymousreply 42July 3, 2023 7:47 PM

If control of the next Senate turns on the West Virginia voters unseating Manchin in the next election, I trust there’ll be a lot of DL crow-eating.

by Anonymousreply 43July 3, 2023 7:59 PM
As a Democratic Senator from, of all unlikely places, West Bugtussle, he was a pretty reliable vote for all of Biden's judicial picks, including Justice Jackson.

That whole surprise second wave Infrastructure bill, the reconstituted BBB was shepherded by Joe Manchin working behind the scenes. That success was a stealth Democrat maneuver of which he was a big part. I get that he's never gonna be FDR, but who is?

Are you still waiting for Bernie and Elizabeth Warren to write a Student Loan bill and get it passed? I wouldn't because those two DON'T DO SHIT!

by Anonymousreply 44July 4, 2023 1:29 AM

The Manchin haters won’t appreciate what they had until after he’s gone.

by Anonymousreply 45July 4, 2023 1:43 AM

I'm not so much a Manchin hater as a Manchin realist, R45 and R42. He's a 75-year-old Democrat from when the South was Democratic. The likelihood of his reelection is nil, and he's known it since his last less-than-20,000-vote victory. He's tried to play three-dimensional chess with his support rather than letting the Dems use their power when they had it. Had they passed the For the People Act, the Dems would have retained the House, and he an Synema were the reasons it didn't come up for a vote in the Senate. Synema even bragged about it at Davos, and high-fived Manchin as though this is something to be proud of. Yes, he helped spend a bunch of money and ensured that a lot of it goes to West Virginia and therefor his pocket. But this is what Democrats do. We put them in charge and they fritter away their power.

Manchin will have a real chance if the popular governor (Justice) can't make it past the more MAGA challenger, a sitting congressman (Mooney).

Whatever you think of his politics, he's a hot 75.

by Anonymousreply 48July 4, 2023 10:10 PM

The Democratic Party didn’t contribute to any of our last House of Senate races in Iowa. Every state and federal office is held by a Republican government except for Auditor! Shumer and Pelosi did not have a rural strategy for these offices.

by Anonymousreply 49July 4, 2023 10:12 PM

Gov. Justice in WV is far more corrupt than Manchin could dream of.

It's anybody's guess there I think.

by Anonymousreply 50July 5, 2023 3:39 AM

Fake Democrat/real Republican

At least we know who we’re dealing with.

by Anonymousreply 51July 5, 2023 3:58 AM

Iowa is gone statewide, R49. At least in today’s environment. There’s no point in the national party wasting any of its efforts there.

by Anonymousreply 52July 5, 2023 4:20 AM

He's a flip flop. Pick a side.

by Anonymousreply 53July 5, 2023 4:32 AM

by Anonymousreply 58February 16, 2024 4:46 PM

Manchin ought to help take out the Governor so the MAGA candidate is his opposition. He can win. In fact if he pulls this out ( I don't think it's likely) but if he does, he will be in avery strong position to run for POTUS in 28.
