Barbara Bain

She has always intrigued me. From Mission Impossible to Space 1999 where her make up gave her the anemic look.

I recently watched Space 1999 on BritBox. It was a struggle, quality very inconsistent but I liked it enough to keep going. Barbara gave a very…understated performance. The writers didn’t give her or the rest of the cast much of substance to do. But I liked her. She looked very like my high school art teacher.

I remember trying to watch this as a kid along with some other show, very British, very cheesy. Both bored me as there wasn't enough monsters/aliens. Worth another go as an adult?

R1 did you like Maya? Her eyebrows were what I remember about her

by Anonymousreply 3June 7, 2023 6:44 PM

Someone wrote this on her Wikipedia page under the talk section.

“I was outraged to read ctress Barbara Bain referred to in your article about her as a "Jewish-American" actress. What moron wrote this? I have yet to see anyone called a "Christian-American." How incredibly bigoted and insulting to Jews. I can't even begin to list the ways in which this is offensive. I'd like to see the expression taken out of the article -- it's flat bigoted -- no Jews in American call themselves "Jewish-Americans."

Shame on you and the Creep-American who wrote it. Belle Schwartz San Francisco”

Martin looks like he is wearing a hairpiece in the above episode.

by Anonymousreply 5June 7, 2023 6:54 PM

So does Bain r5

by Anonymousreply 6June 7, 2023 7:04 PM

She was no Barbara Baxley.

by Anonymousreply 7June 7, 2023 7:06 PM

This show has the kind of theme you can play as nose guitar.

by Anonymousreply 8June 7, 2023 8:03 PM

Jesus, how old was she when this show was on? That filter would make Barbara Walter blush

It's always amazing to me she won three Emmys for her work on "Mission: Impossible." It happened so often they even spoofed it on "The Carol Burnett Show."

The last time I saw her was thirty years ago on "My So-Called Life,' when she played Claire Danes's difficult maternal grandmother. She was having a grand old time.

Carol was...Oregano

She looked older on 1999 but was actually quite beautiful

It has to be agreed: Pamela Sue Martin and Barrie Youngfellow and Susan Sullivan had great 180 degree turns on their own television show credits, but none of them holds a candle to Barbara's intensely dramatic 90 degree turn for "Space 1999."

She reminds me of Lizabeth Scott.

Juliet Landau, who played the mentally ill vampire Drusilla on Buffy the Vampire Slayer, is the daughter of Barbara Bain and Martin Landau.

I was going to say Barbara playing the ship's doctor had to be the voice of scientific reason but then Dr. McCoy on Star Tek could be full of emotion.

Let's see - that's a Season Two pic, 1976... She was 45 then.

She's 91 now.

When I was a young gayboy, Nick Tate’s luscious chest hair was a turn on…

by Anonymousreply 21June 9, 2023 8:45 PM

Yes Nick Tate was the hot guy. This was a time when Australian actors went to England to make it big, though there were exceptions like Michael Pate who went to America and played Indians.

by Anonymousreply 22June 9, 2023 9:29 PM

Tony Anholt was the hottie on the series.

I loved her character’s name in MI - Cinnamon - so glamorous to a young gay boy before I turned my focus to Nick Tate.

I remember being attracted to Alan Carter on Space 1999. With a good show. I think Star Trek the next generation borrowed some of the ideas from space 1999. Deanna Troi character reminds me of Maya and the doctor on space 1999 reminds me of the doctor on Star Trek the next generation.

by Anonymousreply 27June 15, 2023 3:59 AM

I remember how stylish I found the show, the costumes but even more the set designs. I can't remember the stories - I was around ten back then - but the Eagles I still remember. Back then I didn't notice how phallic they looked. The Eagles still look good, imo, even today.

It beggars belief that Diana Rigg as Emma Peel, lost to Barbara Bain in the Emmys race.

Oh please, r29, Mrs. Peel did zero emoting.

You can blame the makeup for her anemic look, OP, but the absolute lack of any personality or vocal inflection is something she has to own. She did better work elsewhere, but in Space 1999 she is the Least Interesting Actress of All Time.

by Anonymousreply 34October 10, 2023 2:24 AM

Don't think that series ever made any mention of how the Moon being ripped away affected the Earth. What would happen?

Merely reduced or no tides at all. Or who knows what catastrophe would occur when a close orbiting body is torn away.

Think the producers also made cheapie puppet shows. That is what this resembles. A higher-budgeted cheapie puppet show.

by Anonymousreply 35October 10, 2023 2:56 AM

I always liked Bain. She should have had a bigger acting career. She certainly had the acting skills and screen presence for it.

by Anonymousreply 36October 10, 2023 3:31 AM

I’m glad she’s still alive.

by Anonymousreply 37April 26, 2024 12:27 PM

OP is intrigued.

by Anonymousreply 38April 26, 2024 12:32 PM

I always found her underwhelming.

by Anonymousreply 39April 26, 2024 2:11 PM

I found it sad when she and Martin Landau divorced after 36 years of marriage. Neither one remarried.
