TLC Forever: "Lisa 'Left Eye' Lopes would have been the 'female Kanye West"
Tionne “T-Boz” Watkins and Rozonda “Chilli” Thomas guide viewers through the group’s early days as baggy-clothed stars whose fresh blend of hip-hop and pop helped solidify Atlanta’s standing as a music capital, their massive success with albums “CrazySexyCool” and “FanMail” and the tragic death in 2002 of member Lisa “Left Eye” Lopes.
In between the headlines are reality checks about health, abortion, births, adoptions, restaurant affiliations, grueling tour rehearsals and everlasting friendship.
Watkins shared some insights about “TLC Forever” – which repeats at 5:30 p.m. (ET/PT) on Sunday and streams on Lifetime – and why she and Thomas “are not going away.”
The frank Watkins reminds early in the film that doctors said she wouldn’t live beyond 30. Born with sickle cell anemia, her life has always included the intervention of medicine and treatment. But cellphone footage of her in a hospital room five days before the launch of TLC’s Celebration of CrazySexyCool tour in 2021 is jarring.
Toward the end of the two-hour documentary, Watkins sits with Thomas and jokes that if Lopes, who was killed in a car accident in Honduras, were alive today, “she’d be the female Kanye West.”

She means in terms of artistry but it’s an attention grab headline. They know dam well Lisa would not be anti-Semitic which has become a big part of Kanye’s brand. They should be more responsible.

I think she means in terms of craziness. Lisa Lopes did burn her boyfriend's house down.

I can’t believe it’s already been over 20 years since Lopes died.

Chilli looks great, like she discovered the fountain of youth.
Lisa was crazy, committing arson.
I don't think the 3 were getting along towards the end. Lisa felt she brought the most talent to the group and she may have been correct.

r5 Lisa was very talented, but the music she wrote near the end of her life was hard to sell. Her solo album was shelved before it even came out. That was a huge blow to her. They all tried at solo efforts but none ever materialized.
Even if Lisa recorded good material to be included on TLC albums after her death, Tionne's health was so precarious in the 2000s they never could've promoted another album.

TLC was Lisa and her two buffers, and that's as far as the world would have ever accepted her. Too shaky of a personality to be a solo superstar.

Chilli is getting fucked on the regular by Matthew Lawrence. Strange that he looks older than her when she's ten years older.

TLC was my favorite group of the 90s. It’s funny they had no success past the 90s because they sold so many dam records I don’t really think of them as a fad. They had a nice 10 yr run.

R5 She didn’t intentionally intend to burn the entire house down. She had burned his clothes before in the tub only the new tub Andre Rison had installed quickly lit on fire.

R12 Get a life and butt out of threads if you don't care about the topic.

The documentary was good. Tionne was busted for making fraudulent returns in the same department store Chilli worked at, but they didn't know each other yet. Fate totally brought them together.
