Dick and Pat Nixon - domestic abuse with some alcohol thrown in the mix. Not uniquely American.
GHWB and Barbara - long suffering and neglected political wife with a cheating husband and decades-long mistress
JFK and Jackie - long suffering and neglected political wife with a cheating husband who banged hundreds
Politicians who cheat are universal and a dime a dozen. But my sense is that wives in other countries aren't expected to be part of the package and campaign tirelessly on behalf of their spouses. Sometimes their machinations eclipse their husbands (e.g. Casey DeS and Nancy) You don't really see that in Europe.
