Any prof get their student evaluations for the semester?
I just dealt with mine. Sharing this about Gen Z:
A couple classes unfortunately have inappropriate curricula (dull) and evaluation (way too low) set by the state system. I cannot change it. University sophomores mostly, and they realised on day one they could do nothing and pass. I tried all kinds of tricks and carrots but they aren't stupid and use their time wisely, on good courses. I respected their choice and wasn't a school marm about it.
One class went for my carrot and the class flipped and turned dynamic and they all worked hard despite the fact they could have passed doing nothing. And worked hard for no reward but learning.
Evaluations: the courses where they did nothing and with high absenteeism - many of them dumped on me. Projected their choice to do nothing or skip class back on me.
The course where I went above and beyond, as they were so motivated - NO EVALUATIONS! Good or bad. Zilch. No thanks, no nothing.
Navel gazers! Good looking, mostly polite, but.... Sheesh!

Gosh. You sound dull and confusing. No wonder why the kids hate you

It's up to the teacher to try to make a class interesting (instead of dull).
Also, what do you mean by "tricks and carrots"?

I tried to make the course interesting but as I explained the students (engineers) are cynical and practical and realised they didn't need to do anything and used their time on challenging classes at their level. They flat out said, that's interesting but we have other priorities, sorry.
Tricks are dynamic projects, multimedia, flipped classrooms, and so on. Didn't bite.
Carrots are offering to teach them something they value or want, even though it's not in the curricula, and won't be rewarded by the school. One class went for the carrot (prep for certifying exam in STEM)
We lobbied the state education board for 5 years and this shit curricula will be retired finally next year and even better we will have academic freedom.

Your use of "carrots" leads me to believe you are an asshole.
