Songwriter Cynthia Weil is dead to me!

She wrote "On Broadway" and "You've Lost That Lovin' Feeling"

And so many other songs

She's outlived Barry. Married since 1961. It's going to take some adjusting for Barry.

Make your own kind of music in heaven Cynth!

by Anonymousreply 3June 2, 2023 6:39 PM

Cynthia wrote one of my favorite songs ever.

I saw her WIKI photo and thought "they've got it wrong, that's Steven Tyler, but, no, it's her.

I think you meant Barry outlived Cynthia. As you note, he's still alive and kicking at 84.

She wrote some awfully good music.

Article says this was her first hit. I love the Brill orchestration and background singers

They got married when he was 22 and she was 20. They were probably dating a few years before that. She died at age 82. He's currently 84. That's a long time together. Good for them. But bad for him now.

She was actually from Manhattan, usually these musical geniuses come from Brooklyn.

by Anonymousreply 16June 2, 2023 7:39 PM

But Barry WAS from Brooklyn, it seems - see what I mean?

I wish people still wrote and recorded quality pop music.

In my opinion George Michael was the last big pop artist/singer.

[quote]I wish people still wrote and recorded quality pop music.

I was reading some article in an old 60s pop paper and it was about the "current" pop song writers and it ended "Imagine living in a world without a constant stream of new pop songs". I thought, gurl, I don't need to imagine it - I'm living it.

by Anonymousreply 19June 2, 2023 8:15 PM

Cynthia and Barry Mann never wrote any songs about pimp popping a cap in the ass of some ho. I wonder what the Righteous Brothers could have done with that.

by Anonymousreply 20June 2, 2023 8:16 PM

What a remarkable legacy.

by Anonymousreply 21June 2, 2023 8:16 PM

She helped to free Eastern Europe, in a small but cool way.

My mother must have bought that record at the time because it was around our house since forever. Nice to hear it again.

I always associate it with this one which was also on the same stack. My parents had good taste in pop.

Some Columbia 45s from that era had yellow labels. I wonder whether orange was for adult/pop and yellow for teen/rock records.

Barry & Cynthia, Carole and Gerry, Burt & Hal, Carole BS, Neil Sedaka

Them New York Jews really knew how to write a hit!

r28, my favorite musical moment from The West Wing also features Ainsley Hayes. "He Is an English Man" has made me cry since Chariots of Fire.

When that show was good, it was so good.
