June 1 birthday girl Marilyn Monroe is a fresh breeze in the 1955 sitcom-ish "The Seven Year Itch." MM is "The Girl" who lives upstairs from a middle-aged neighbor (Tom Ewell) who lusts after her, while the wife & kid are gone. Ewell's character is about as appealing as the Ropers on "Three's Company." Marilyn is the whole show, which includes her iconic upswept white dress. My take on this 20th Century fox.
Marilyn's the only reason to watch "The Seven Year Itch"

Marilyn was the biggest star in the world at that moment. She used her clout to leave Hollywood and take control of her career. It was incredibly brave and ambitious for the times.
She came back with a poignant performance in "Bus Stop". But after that, only "Some Like It Hot" was a megahit.
Ironically, her most Oscar-worthy performance was her last: "The Misfits". She uses all her assets and nails that character.

Today would be her 97th birthday!

I could never sit through the whole thing. Not Marilyn's best but it is one of her most iconic.

She was no Anne Baxter.

The introduction to Marilyn's "Girl." Monroe is great fun, but saddled with sexless old Tom Ewell, who's supposed to be a guy married with a kid for seven years... more like 70!

<- A lot of younger men died in WW2. Same story as the devastating Civil War: women married men 20 - 30 years older than themselves.

Tom Ewell won a Tony for his performance in the stage version of "The Seven Year Itch." But in this film version, Ewell seems to still be playing to the last row of the theater. Sure he's playing up the screwball, but his character is so creepy that Ewell's added hamminess makes the character irritating.

I always loved Tom Ewell in this.
And he was 45-46. That’s still a youngish man with all the juices flowing.

Taught Marilyn everything she knew bout cock sucking.

Reply #9 If that's true, MM had her work cut out for her!

The famous scene that sent Joe DiMaggio into a rage...

Tom Ewell was a closeted gay man.

Did Tom Ewell and other MM "leading man" David Wayne ever get it on... juices flowing, and all?

When I said juices flowing I was referring to more to the character, Richard Sherman.

Agree Marilyn is terrific as the idea of a woman, not really much character for her to portray. She had some good moments like the bathtub scene and Tom's nightmare of her warning women he was a predator.
The movie was a huge hit which allowed Marilyn to triumph in her negotiations with the studio. Very brave of her to break her contract, disappear and start taking acting lessons in NY. It could have cost her career but thankfully this was a cash cow.

<- Yet she died with very little money. After making studios millions.

Scotty Bowers said Tom Ewell would fuck 10 guys and still want more.
