Good for him, but what's with just that one facial expression? Isn't he an actor? He looks like some random chav on the streets of Liverpool.

Doubtful. No headhider.

Amazon has one of his movies, Station to Station, and it's listed as "LGBTQ." None of the reviews say whether this means "gay," and I read that his character gets involved with someone named Sarah. Probably more TQ than G. Too bad. A dong like that deserves the kind of attention it could get in a gay story.

A dong like that deserves the kind of attention it could get in a gay story.

Not to worry R8, his character is bisexual (from before the film even starts, it's not a coming out story) and over the course of the film has straight sex, gay sex, and a bisexual foursome with a male sex-worker friend and his clients. It's a pretty straightforward arthouse indie drama, I thought it was pretty good, especially the last stretch and ending, which were pretty profound.

The other characters are a mix of gay, straight, and bi, and all have very different backgrounds and stories going on. The film is kind of about all of them, told through the eyes of the Eggers character. They don't all get as naked as Eggers does, but they spend a lot of time without their clothes!

R33 that's the artist (Murlin St. Jean's style). He photographs the nude body and renders the models in colors. He's a pretty successful commercial photographer, but his artistic stuff is all about exploring the body, American taboos and hangups with the nude body, and using art to provoke. I've been following him for a while.

His work is amazing if you're into that kind of stuff. It definitely provokes and his journals give you a sense of what he's doing from an artists standpoint. I've been hoping to see a gallery show of his at some point here in NY, because it would be awesome to see all those nude bodies and all that color in a larger more in-your-face way.

David's actually on the "bigger" side for his models, but I guess that's true of David in life, as well. But there are some seriously hot guys in the mix, and women, as well. Murlin's work is very diverse in terms of backgrounds, ages, ethnicity, lifestyles, body shapes, and its all really cool and experimental.

And believe you me, if penis enlargement surgery could actually make you look like THAT, I'd sign over my house savings IMMEDIATELY. (Of course, if it could make you look like that AND do it on the budget of an aspiring but oft-unemployed actor, I'd probably have to get on a 10-year waiting list with every other man in America!)

WHERE'S THE BEEF?

by Anonymousreply 48June 1, 2023 3:10 PM

R34 I have seen Station to Station. It is way too long (2+ hours and talky talky talky) and a lot of the acting is B-A-D...and some of the dialogue is cringey but it is watchable and lights up in some scenes and I am surprised it is not in the DL canon because (SPOILERS AHEAD, MARY SUE!):

It is the kind of "drifter finds his way to a new town and infiltrates a family" story that Tennessee Williams and William Inge loved.

1) Eggers plays a mostly nice guy—albeit not as nice as he thinks he is—but this is the twist: He is like the Schwarzenegger son Arnold had with the maid. the character was raised in this uber rich media tycoon/succession/Murdoch environment as the son of the maid...He thought his father was missing but his father was Rupert.

2) He has a very big penis and it is part of his character's identity and he knows how to use it and allude to it to get what he wants

3) He identifies as bisexual

He gets scouted by a (is-he-or-isn't-he-a-predator?) older gay guy who has one of the Frat Pad type cam houses in Las Vegas...but to be the house handy man. That is the "family" I mentioned before.

There is all sorts of drama with the various scantily clad boys of the house and the owner is constantly playing head games with the boys and also constantly freaking out about money since OnlyFans etc. has killed the cam house business model.

There's an absolutely awful subplot with a neighbor girl he falls in love with.

It's an indie but he does show off his dick nicely in one scene and he has one great sex scene with another male character...kind of a hate-fuck.

As I said, it is too long, too talky, and some of the acting is terrible. Two of the female characters and one of the males speak in that froggy vocal trill thing that just makes me murderous, but I suppose it is accurate. Eggers is an OK actor and is very cute and looks like Topher Grace with a big cock. The story has some surprises and is watchable, but it is strictly film festival material.

The movie only works with a guy with a big show-er of a dick so I wondered how it was cast...but Eggers is listed as a co-producer so maybe he was attached from its genesis.

by Anonymousreply 50June 1, 2023 5:03 PM

LMAO R50.

by Anonymousreply 51June 1, 2023 5:14 PM

I've seen it, too, and I think that's a pretty fair analysis R49. (I too am surprised it hasn't been salivated over/praised/critiqued/torn to shreds here on DL, as we're wont to do, but maybe that's for the best). I'm not as critical of the film since I learned on Wikipedia that it was a first film for the writer/director (same guy), first lead for Eggers (who is in every scene), and was made for some ridiculously small amount of money (something like $23K) during the COVID-19 shutdown in Vegas. With that kind of budget, your pool of talent isn't gonna include Meryl Streep.

It IS talky, and that does seem to be a love it/hate it thing (I'm a big fan of Richard Linklater and Ed Burns, so I'm cool with it), but the length is a valid criticism. My guess is the first-time director wanted to feature everybody as equally as possible and give them each a "big moment" in the film (and, to be fair, I think they all do well with those moments, but it's fair to say they weren't all necessary to the main character's story.) I'm sure the writer and director learned a lot making his first film, which to his credit is fucking AMBITIOUS and pretty good on balance, and given a more conventional budget and casting options, could make some seriously great LGBT cinema in the future. For that reason alone, I'm more fan than critic when it comes to the film.

Coming back to that first thought, I am kind of glad we didn't do our typical DL thing with it. There isn't a lot of gay cinema out there that willing to put put that many gay/bisexual characters (who aren't coming out or self-hating), that much penis, and that much gay/bi sex onscreen unapologetically in a true, well-written, way. It's always low-budget sex comedies that reinforce stereotypes or a "prestige" film where a Hollywood star (usually straight) flashes penis long enough to be called brave (once and only once!) and the gay sex scenes are more implied than depicted. Station to Station is the kind of film I'd like to see more of, that probably only COULD be made by an indie filmmaker during a pandemic with green actors, as Hollywood (even the "indie friendly" studios) and money people would have watered it down at every step. And it probably only could have been made by a first-timer who didn't know what they weren't "supposed" to do or have interests to protect. So I'm showing support, sincerely. And whether it's the filmmaker or Eggers himself, I saw a lot of promise that could do a lot for our LGBT film canon in the years to come IF we don't tear them apart and discourage them from ever doing it again.

And I didn't mind the subplot with the neighbor! She was cute.

by Anonymousreply 52June 1, 2023 7:06 PM

R52 $23K? I had no idea and it definitely is an achievement when viewed through that lens. I thought it had a lot of surprises plus I am a perv so I liked seeing the peen. I liked the line where the owner of the boy hut or whatever it was said something like "oh you're rich and have a big cock, cry me a river."

That also makes sense about most of the actors getting their one moment (in lieu of $, something they could use in their reel). I liked how Tom thought he was so right about everyone...and he was wrong. They were a family. Yet the audience still liked him. That only works with a character you are rooting for.

I still don't get why at the end sharing the cab to McCarran with the stranger-girl he put his hand on his crotch. I'm assuming it was a signal to the viewer that he had not really learned anything at all about himself (because that was how he got the owner's attention in the beginning in the gay bar).

by Anonymousreply 53June 1, 2023 7:28 PM

Eggers is cute, promising as a leading man, and hung as hell. I've paused and rewound quite a few times.

R49, yes!!! Tennessee Williams and William Inge...such a perfect comparison. I remember thinking during the big argument in the kitchen (and what happened afterward) that it was giving Tennessee Williams, but you're 100% right. The whole film really does. It might have actually worked better as a play, now that I think of it.

R52, think you're right about the writer-director wanting to give everybody an equal "big moment." TBH, I would have cut a couple to get to a perfect runtime (and up the film's acting "average") but the film still works long...just would be better shorter. I also want to see what this filmmaker (and Eggers) will do with the lessons learned from STATION TO STATION, because if they were bold enough to start with something like this, there could be some excellent gay cinema in our future.

[quote] Eggers is cute, promising as a leading man, and hung as hell.

way to bury the lede!

by Anonymousreply 55June 1, 2023 7:32 PM

I saw that differently R53, [non-plot significant spoiler ahead], but your interpretation is interesting. To me, it looked like he started to do the same thing and got a positive response, then pulls back (literally) and looks out the window instead of at her, making me think he had learned something.

BUT, I kind of like thinking of it both ways. Like he's learned something but has he really changed? We all like to think we've changed right after the decision, but before we've done the actual work and, well, that's not great, lol. I bought the movie, so I'm gonna go back and rewatch that now. That may have been more interesting than I realized...
