Is basketball Canadian or American in origin*?
Mr. James Naismith laid out the rules for the first time in December 1891 in Springfield, Massachusetts where the first game was played. So American!
But Mr. James Naismith was born, raised, and educated in Canada. So Canadian!
*Of course, one can point to ancient games as being "like basketball". But this thread has no place for such pedantry. We assume that basketball was created by Mr. James Naismith, and so this thread will continue in that fashion. TIA

He invented the game in the US, so it's a US origin. If he had invented it in Toronto, then it would be Canadian. Also, if it were a Canadian invention, why are Canadians so bad at playing it?

One could argue that he was inspired by his new American students/friends/surroundings.
Otherwise, he would have already invented the game in Canada. He had been a gym teacher there, too.
He moved to the US in his early thirties and invented basketball shortly thereafter. Like within a year.

The Canadians have hockey.
The Americans have McDonalds.

It's not that Canadians are "bad" at playing it, it's that the university system here does not have the athletic scholarships and massive fan audience that NCAA basketball has in the U.S.
