The incident in which Lorena Bobbitt severed her husband John Wayne Bobbitt's penis occurred on June 23, 1993, in Manassas, Virginia. Lorena stated in a court hearing that, after coming home that evening, her husband had raped her. After he then went to sleep, she got out of bed and went to the kitchen for a drink of water. She then grabbed an eight-inch Ginsu carving knife on the kitchen counter, returned to their bedroom, pulled back the bed sheets and cut off his penis.

Fisher became increasingly jealous of Buttafuoco's wife, Mary Jo Buttafuoco. She obtained a .25-caliber handgun with the assistance of Peter Guagenti, a Brooklyn auto supply salesman who acted as her getaway driver. When Mary Jo Buttafuoco answered the door, Fisher told her that Joey Buttafuoco was having an affair with Fisher's (imaginary) younger sister, providing a T-shirt advertising Buttafuoco's auto body shop as "proof". The conversation lasted about 15 minutes, during which Buttafuoco became increasingly angry. She finally told Fisher to leave and then turned her back to return to the house. Fisher took out the gun, struck Buttafuoco twice with it, then shot her in the head; she later said the severely wounded Buttafuoco fell on her.

On the morning of 15 July 1997, Versace took a walk on Ocean Drive to retrieve his morning magazines. Usually, Versace would have an assistant walk from his home to the nearby News Cafe to get his magazines, but on this occasion, he decided to go himself. We are happily prepared to leave 'this world' and go with Ti's crew."

In 1995, Kaczynski sent a letter to The New York Times promising to "desist from terrorism" if the Times or The Washington Post published his manifesto, in which he argued that his bombings were extreme but necessary in attracting attention to the erosion of human freedom and dignity by modern technologies that require mass organization. The FBI and Attorney General Janet Reno pushed for the publication of the essay, which appeared in The Washington Post in September 1995. Upon reading it, Kaczynski's brother, David, recognized the prose style and reported his suspicions to the FBI. Kaczynski was arrested in 1996, and—maintaining that he was sane—tried and failed to dismiss his court-appointed lawyers because they wanted him to plead insanity to avoid the death penalty. He pleaded guilty to all charges in 1998 and was sentenced to eight consecutive life terms in prison without the possibility of parole.

Beginning in the early hours of July 23, 1991, Dahmer was questioned by Detective Patrick Kennedy as to the murders he had committed and the evidence found at his apartment. Over the following two weeks, Kennedy and, later, Detective Dennis Murphy conducted numerous interviews with Dahmer which, when combined, totaled over 60 hours. Dahmer waived his right to have a lawyer present throughout his interrogations, adding he wished to confess all as he had "created this horror and it only makes sense I do everything to put an end to it." He readily admitted to having murdered sixteen young men in Wisconsin since 1987, with one further victim—Steven Hicks—killed in Ohio in 1978.

The Menéndez case became a national sensation when Court TV broadcast the trial in 1993. Represented by their defense lawyer, Leslie Abramson, the brothers stated that they killed their parents out of fear for their lives after a lifetime of abuse at the hands of their parents, especially sexual abuse at the hands of their father, who was described as a cruel perfectionist and pedophile. Meanwhile, their mother was described as an enabling, selfish, mentally unstable alcoholic and drug addict who encouraged her husband's behavior and was also violent towards the brothers.

On March 9, 1997, at 12:30 a.m., Wallace left with his entourage in two Chevrolet Suburbans to attend an after-party at Steve Stoute's house in the Hollywood Hills. Prior to leaving, the Los Angeles Fire Department closed the party early because of smoking, loud music, and overcrowding. Wallace traveled in the front passenger seat alongside his associates Damion "D-Roc" Butler, Junior M.A.F.I.A. member Lil' Cease, and driver Gregory "G-Money" Young. Sean Combs traveled in the other vehicle with Eugene "Gene" Deal, Tone, Stevie J and driver Kenny. The two SUVs were trailed by a Chevrolet Blazer carrying Bad Boy Records' director of security, Paul Offord, driven by an off-duty Inglewood police officer.

By 12:45 a.m., the streets were crowded with people leaving the museum. Wallace's SUV stopped at a red light on the corner of Wilshire Boulevard and South Fairfax Avenue just 50 yd (46 m) away. Two minutes later, a dark-colored 1994–1996 Chevrolet Impala SS pulled up alongside Wallace's Suburban. The driver of the Impala, a black male, rolled down his window, drew a 9 mm blue-steel pistol and fired at the SUV; four bullets hit Wallace. Wallace's entourage rushed him to Cedars-Sinai Medical Center, where doctors performed an emergency thoracotomy, but he was pronounced dead at 1:15 a.m. at the age of 24.

As a child in a grocery store in the 90’s there were 2 things that gave me nightmares.

Nicole Simpson’s murder coverage and Heaven’s Gate / Marshall Applewhite on all the newspapers at checkout.

Marshall Applewhite was my own personal boogeyman. I was so scared of that famous photo of his wide eyes.

r30 I will also admit that hearing the graphic details on the news about how she was nearly decapitated freaked me out as a kid. News coverage was savage back in the 90s. I remember my throat even starting to hurt after hearing it.

Another disturbing piece of news imagery that I'll never forget from my childhood was the photo of the fireman carrying a bloodied baby after the Oklahoma City bombing. That, literally, gave me nightmares.

Just so Americans know - your cultural moments were replayed across our news channels as if we were over there. That was the start of the anti-Americanism ('fat, dumb, ignorant') that resonated around the globe.

I lived in the States in 1999, and I found the people I met to be friendly, interesting and incredibly diverse. It's unfortunate that the worst news/moments got exported, but that's seriously what started the rot - Springer etc.

The 32nd Grammy Awards took place February 21, 1990 at Los Angeles’ fabled Shrine Auditorium, where Milli Vanilli’s Rob Pilatus and Fab Morvan sat in the front row, nervously waiting for Kris Kristofferson and Young MC to announce the winner of that year’s Best New Artist award from among a group that included folk duo Indigo Girls, alternative fave Neneh Cherry, British house music pioneers Soul II Soul and MC’s Delicious Vinyl labelmate Tone Loc.

“And the best new artist Grammy goes to… Milli Vanilli!”

Nine months after their Grammy win, on November 20, 1990, Pilatus and Morvan were holding a hastily called press conference at Ocean Way studios in Hollywood to officially turn over their Grammy awards, a day after then-Recording Academy head Michael Greene had already officially revoked it on behalf of the organization.

Just a week before, the duo’s Germany producer and mastermind Frank Farian revealed to Reuters what had been a poorly kept secret within the tight-knit recording industry: The German-born Pilatus and Paris native Morvan hadn’t sung a note on the worldwide 14-million-selling, chart-topping “Girl You Know It’s True” album, which generated five Top 5 singles and three No. 1 pop hits in “Blame It on the Rain,” “Baby Don’t Forget My Number” and “Girl I’m Gonna Miss You.” Farian pulled the plug and blew up his own creation, in turn punishing Pilatus and Morvan for the sheer gall of wanting to sing on their own next album.
