The fight is regarding Eric’s writing contribution to Monty Python.

I'll wait for Terry Gilliam or Michael Palin to weigh in before taking a side.

The bigger question is why Cleese is being such a dick about it which makes me side with Idle since the whole thing seems from left field.

by Anonymousreply 2May 25, 2023 7:42 PM

I wonder if Cleese was just saying that to wind Eric up?

by Anonymousreply 3May 25, 2023 7:42 PM

Monty Python = completely overrated. Always thought they were a bunch of smug, insufferable assholes. Not fun-nay.

They say comedy doesn't travel well.

Monty Python is a prime example.

Michael Palin is the nice one everyone else loved. He is also brilliant in "Life of Brian," whatever his own contribution to the script was.

by Anonymousreply 7May 25, 2023 9:04 PM

Cleese is a pompous ass.

by Anonymousreply 8May 25, 2023 9:07 PM

I always wondered if Eric Idle was bitter at Cleese's success with A Fish Called Wanda, An Oscar for Kevin Kline, BAFTAs for Cleese and Michael Palin, an Oscar nomination for Cleese's screenplay.

A few years later Splitting Hairs was released. Written by and starring Idle with Rick Moranis, Barbara Hershey and darling bud Catherine Zeta Douglas Spartacus Jones and Cleese in a small role. It got appalling reviews. Nuns On The Run with Robbie Coltrane was much better.

by Anonymousreply 9May 25, 2023 9:08 PM

It was Splitting Heirs.

John Cleese made a joke, and thin-skinned Eric Idle took the bait.

by Anonymousreply 11May 25, 2023 11:03 PM

John Cleese is still alive?

by Anonymousreply 12May 25, 2023 11:09 PM

r12 Yes and he won't let anyone forget it

John has … issues.

[quote]R14: John has … issues.

Yes. Among them is that he has jumped onto the far right anti-woke haywagon, and cries about 'cancel culture.'

Oddly, he still considers himself a liberal.

He's developed a lack of self-awareness.
