Senior here. I cannot be the only one worried. I am cancelling my auto pay on my Internet tomorrow and maybe my gas. 40 percent of seniors live check to check. Snap Food Stamps are also going to freeze. Will we make it? Even 10 days will send poor seniors to food banks. Am I overreacting?
Datalounge Seniors. Can you survive without Social Security checks in June?

You should also be calling that jizzstain Qevin McCarthy and telling him what garbage he is, OP.
by Anonymous | reply 1 | May 25, 2023 10:21 AM |
I'm not a senior, but no I can't. I'm disabled. My health insurance comes out of the check too. It helps pay a mortgage. It'll be very bad if it stops coming in. Go figure it's right after they gave the largest increase for COLA. It's going to further divide the country too because people are going to start looking at other programs wondering why other people are getting money, while the elderly and disabled are not. It's a mess. If Republicans do this, that means they really have evolved to be more evil. Like abortion, SSI was always on their wish list, but they didn't have the balls to touch it yet. Now they can make it look like Biden did it.
by Anonymous | reply 2 | May 25, 2023 10:23 AM |
Oh and that's not accounting for seniors that won't be able to live since property taxes are double these days. Mine now costs more than the mortgage payment with over a 5% rate). That's just happened since covid because "property values are way up" but it doesn't do any good for people that can't or don't move.
by Anonymous | reply 3 | May 25, 2023 10:26 AM |
A court will stop Biden from playing games with Social Security and will order that benefits be paid using cash on hand. No worries.

Republicans are complete and utter pieces of shit. Just absolutely disgusting.
by Anonymous | reply 5 | May 25, 2023 10:28 AM |
R2 then when things right themselves the republicans will sell themselves as the heroes who saved social security and remember how unfair it was when those mexicans and horrible woke young people still got food stamps? this is all about keeping people at each others throats while they rob and hoard

Then put the blame on the rethugs where it belongs.
But, noooooooooo. Seniors overwhelmingly vote for the rethugs year after year who inevitably use the debt ceiling as leverage for political gain when they can't push their agenda because they don't control the entire government.
by Anonymous | reply 12 | May 25, 2023 11:59 AM |
Yes. I’ll sell the Precious Moments collection that Mother left me, and live in luxury. I just hope things don’t get so bad that I have to sell the boa collection!

But FOX News tells them it's the commie, liberal, trans, groomer, pedo, sleepy, Hunter Biden, Clinton Crime Family, green M & M pushing, WOKEsters who are keeping them from getting their money, R12. Not the Republicans. Never, ever the Republicans.
Don't you know this? Aren't you afraid for your Mr. Potatohead doll, gas stove, and personal arsenal? WAKE UP, Patriot!
by Anonymous | reply 14 | May 25, 2023 12:06 PM |
R4, are you slow? There is no cash on hand. In June, what has come in or is coming in will be vastly less than what needs to be paid. So the government has to issue bonds to cover the difference. Which they cannot do if the debt ceiling is not raised
Americans have been convinced by Republicans that cutting spending is easy or will hurt the “right” people. The reality is that tax levels come nowhere near covering the spending Americans want. Especially with Social Security and Medicare, where almost everyone gets more back than they put in except those who die young.

Dems certainly aren't doing a very good job making it clear that it's the Republicans who will be responsible. No mention of the severe cuts that they want to impose. The Republicans are making it totally Biden's fault, with no response from the craven Dems. They should be plastering the airwaves with commercials and interviews on the harm these cuts will cause. I've lost faith in their ability to display some balls.

by Anonymous | reply 21 | May 25, 2023 2:11 PM |
I feel like there's a lot of media hype around this topic. June 1 is the scariest date to beef up ratings and ad revenue but it's not set in stone. They're going to come to a deal at the very last minute. They always do. There's a lot of grandstanding.
by Anonymous | reply 22 | May 25, 2023 2:15 PM |
They are not cutting back benefits, r18. They have no money to pay them
Fitch and other credit agencies are considering downgrading our credit worthiness. Since our interest is almost $500b/year, that will cost us extra billions of dollars for the Republicans political posturing. Again.
by Anonymous | reply 23 | May 25, 2023 2:21 PM |
How about demanding that everyone across the board pay taxes. No brackets, no loopholes. 25% taxes for all. End of problems.
by Anonymous | reply 24 | May 25, 2023 2:26 PM |
R24, it wouldn’t end all problems. First, that is a tax CUT for the many in tho upper middle class, who provide much of the revenue. Second, it would only address income. Bezos and Musk and Thiel would find ways to protect their wealth from taxation.
This is a problem 40 years in the making. The majority of it comes from Republicans insisting on low taxes while only addressing spending on things they don’t like that are a small part of the budget. We’re kind of fucked, but the economy is pretty robust.

It won’t likely happen. It’ll take some bullshit, but who wants to get hung with tanking the economy?
An American default - which, like it or not is a way bigger problem for everyone than any one of us not getting our check by Direct Deposit - along with the schism between sane people and the Q/Trump loons would mean the end of the Republican Party. They’ll be responsible.
And “No,” it’s not an issue for me if the June check isn’t there on time. We’ll figure it out,

It has nothing to do with Biden. Without the ability to borrow, the government will shut down. It is a matter of law, if Biden could avoid it he would. Of course you know that the Republican trash of Congress raised the debt ceiling multiple times under Trump, who didn't care if people dropped dead as long as Russia was paying his personal debts.

Flat tax doesn't work because 25% of the income of 99% of Americans would leave us broke. Whereas, the 1% and corporations wouldn't even feel a tax on their income.

McCarthy has to look tough to the MAGAts, the only way he can keep his job. He'll cave in and declare victory, as will all of the right-wing media and the Dems will just be happy that they avoided a shutdown and not show the American people how much the Republicans couldn't care less about them. They feel that it wouldn't be polite, and that's the hallmark of the Democrats.

Contact Retirement Retirement Information Center U.S. Treasury 20 MAY Government Debt Limit Posted 1:51 PM by Bill Zielinski
As widely reported in the news, our government has reached its debt limit. U.S. Treasury Secretary Geithner has since declared a “debt issuance suspension period” for the Civil Service Retirement and Disability Fund (which funds our retirees). By law this allows the Treasury to redeem (or cash out) a portion of existing Treasury securities held by the fund. The same law also requires that the government repay the fund with interest.
Bottom line: This action will not affect CSRS and FERS annuity payments to retirees. All payments will continue as normal and on schedule.
Thank you for your time. I hope you find this information useful and we look forward to providing you more information in the future.

Has Biden announced he won't take executive action and override Congressional power on this? Because I don't think he should give the REFUGS their deep spending cuts. He should ignore the hissy fit and be the responsible executive in the room.

No need to feel sorry for me, R26, if things get too bad I can sell one of my properties. But which one? My Boston condo or my beach house on the Cape?
If I was forced to take such an extreme measure, I would have more than enough money for cod and prunes.
But, I don’t think it will come to that. Two good incomes, two properties, and three vehicles ought to see us through.

For the record, I don’t mean to make light of the financial struggles many people experience. And I find it in very poor taste when people who know full well that I am financially comfortable like to make stupid comments about being financially insecure.
If it makes any of you feel better to make really juvenile jokes about my life, have at it. It doesn’t really bother me.
