I finally tried to watch Bros, and failed

Couldn't go past the first 5 minutes, even fast forwarding to the sex scenes. What a disaster. Billy Eichner is not an actor, he doesn't have any onscreen charisma, his speech pattern is unnerving and unappealing, the film is very poorly written, there was no redeeming factor except Luke McFarlane's body, but that couple was so vastly implausible, it made his scenes unwatchable. I didn't think it would be great, but it was in fact much worse than anyone said. People have been kind to Eichner.I'm frustrated, I was in the mood for a silly gay movie

I forced myself to watch it although I had to stop and start, it took days. Preachy and badly acted.

by Anonymousreply 1May 22, 2023 9:04 PM

McFarlane is with a woman now.

by Anonymousreply 2May 22, 2023 9:05 PM

How can you call it bad if you only watched 5 minutes of it? Nice try.

The gay Republicans here try to brand supporting trans people as "gay erasure" but they're the ones erasing gays by bullying other out gay men and trying to sabotage a movie made by gay men

by Anonymousreply 3May 22, 2023 9:08 PM

LOL R3, your post is a parody, right ?

by Anonymousreply 4May 22, 2023 9:09 PM

I got about 20 minutes in and had to stop. It’s so cringey there I have to pause and regroup.

by Anonymousreply 5May 22, 2023 9:10 PM

I couldn't tell if Billy was parodying an SJW, militant gay- or if he was trying to create a sympathetic portrait of one.

I turned it off one night about 20 min. before the ending, intending to finish it. But I just said meh and returned it to the library.

by Anonymousreply 6May 22, 2023 9:13 PM

R3, Trans were the ones trying to sabotage the movie, throwing tantrums and complaining about how there wasn’t enough trans representation and how“cis white gays are evil” and all that. Billy shot himself in the foot trying to appeal to these lunatics.

by Anonymousreply 7May 22, 2023 9:18 PM

Never finished it. Didn't miss anything. Glad it flopped. Eichner is insufferable.

by Anonymousreply 8May 22, 2023 9:18 PM

R7, it bombed because gay men didn't support it

And because most straight people won't see a gay film.

But nice attempt to blame trans people

by Anonymousreply 9May 22, 2023 9:23 PM

R6 is a parody of a Log Cabinette

Only low IQ conservatives use "SJW" as an insult

by Anonymousreply 10May 22, 2023 9:24 PM

We STILL hate this movie!!! Lol

Bring back the Brokeback Mountain threads while your at it

by Anonymousreply 11May 22, 2023 9:26 PM

It bombed because it was really bad.

by Anonymousreply 12May 22, 2023 9:28 PM

You hit it on the nail about Billy’s acting style OP. He is the fatal flaw of the film.

by Anonymousreply 13May 22, 2023 9:30 PM

R9, Plenty of gay films have seen success. They actively tried to sabotage the movie and the forced trans inclusion is part of the reason why it bombed.

by Anonymousreply 14May 22, 2023 9:31 PM

[quote]McFarlane is with a woman now.

Only in Hallmark movies, sweetie.

He landed a big contract with them - good for him.

by Anonymousreply 15May 22, 2023 9:33 PM

R14 Wrong, it bombed because in a post Covid theater experience no one is going to see Billy Eichner make out with guys except gay people. At least if the lead was hot the ladies and fraus would churned in making it mainstream.

by Anonymousreply 16May 22, 2023 9:33 PM

Eichner was terrible, loud, intrusive, self-centered.

McFarlane walked away with every moment he had. I kept wanting the movie to be more about him. Sad.

Eichner cannot write or act, let alone star.

by Anonymousreply 17May 22, 2023 9:36 PM

It was on numerous flights recently and I passed. And I’ll watch anything to get through an 11 hour flight.

by Anonymousreply 18May 22, 2023 9:39 PM

Op pack it in. This horse has already been beat.

by Anonymousreply 19May 22, 2023 9:49 PM

Eichner wasn't acting? His affectations are how most young gay men in the cities are today. Repulsive.

That's why no one is hooking up on Grindr. They don't even like themselves. GenZ gays have no redeeming qualities.

by Anonymousreply 20May 22, 2023 9:53 PM

R20, most guys under 50 are probably repulsed by eldergays you. And Billy is hardly "Gen Z" though he'd probably love the idea of you making him much younger than he really is.

by Anonymousreply 21May 22, 2023 10:28 PM

R14, no, that's a lie. No one cares about a couple of trans actors in small supporting roles. Blame straight people, instead of trans people who make up .6% of the population

by Anonymousreply 22May 22, 2023 10:30 PM

[quote]Eichner was terrible, loud, intrusive, self-centered.

Oh, you mean he was being himself.

by Anonymousreply 23May 22, 2023 10:33 PM

I watched it on a Lufthansa flight. They did not edit out any sex scenes. It was fun actually. I hope my neighbors enjoyed it.

by Anonymousreply 24May 22, 2023 10:38 PM

R22, Most trans are heterosexual men and women so….

by Anonymousreply 25May 22, 2023 10:45 PM

R25, but you Log Cabinettes insist that all trans people are really gay people who were "forcibly transed"

by Anonymousreply 26May 22, 2023 10:55 PM

I don't understand why you want to make the failure of the movie all about trans people. It 's a terrible movie. It has an awful central performance by a non actor. It's not witty, not funny. There is no talent in the lead , as an actor , or as a writer. It got, in fact, a lot of support for the turd it is. The trans characters / issues are actually it's only asset.

by Anonymousreply 27May 23, 2023 9:58 AM

Everyone other than low-IQ boosterism gays hated that movie. R27 is correct.

by Anonymousreply 28May 23, 2023 10:02 AM

It was a horrible lecture disguised as a movie.

by Anonymousreply 29May 23, 2023 10:12 AM

[quote]I finally tried to watch Bros, and failed

One of the unique features of the Datalounge is our apparent pride in proclaiming our failures.

by Anonymousreply 30May 23, 2023 10:14 AM

R30 It’s not a failure to not watch Bros; it’s a sign of good taste.

by Anonymousreply 31May 23, 2023 10:17 AM

R28 What’s a boosterism gay?

by Anonymousreply 32May 23, 2023 6:09 PM

r32, the type of gay who judges gay things and people with less rigorous standards than they would otherwise. Often paired with relentless boosting of all things gay. Far from the worst trait but it’s gotta be kept in mind.

by Anonymousreply 33May 23, 2023 6:42 PM

R33 So basically like those counts who support Nuns in Drag?

by Anonymousreply 34May 23, 2023 7:18 PM

I never understood how Eichner had any sort of success or fanbase. All I've seen is footage of him running around New York shouting into people's faces. And lot of people look at this and seem to think he's some sort of talent. They even gave him a movie.

There's not a single post on here that surprises me. I couldn't even watch the trailer. Though I'm slightly fascinated now.

by Anonymousreply 35May 23, 2023 7:28 PM

Exactly, r34. Gay men’s chorus queens. The guys who go to see the gay cheerleaders at pride events. Those sorts. They’re harmless and quite kind generally, but have no taste and are boring.

ChatGPT Title: "Unexpected Love, Bro"

INT. SETH'S LIVING ROOM - DAY

Seth, a laid-back guy in his late 20s, and Billy, an energetic and flamboyant friend, are lounging on the couch, surrounded by empty pizza boxes and soda cans. They're watching a ROMANTIC COMEDY on TV.

SETH (mockingly) Ugh, can you believe these sappy rom-coms? Who needs all this lovey-dovey stuff?

BILLY (laughing) Right? It's all so predictable. I mean, seriously, how many times can we watch two people meet and fall in love in the most unrealistic ways?

SETH Exactly! Give me explosions and car chases any day. Love and romance just isn't our thing, man.

They high-five, laughing together.

INT. SETH'S KITCHEN - LATER

Seth and Billy are now standing near the kitchen counter, refilling their alcoholic drinks.

BILLY (looking around) You know, Seth, it's weird how much time we spend together. We practically live at each other's places.

SETH Yeah, it's like we're attached at the hip. But hey, that's just because we're bros, right?

They exchange a knowing look.

INT. SETH'S LIVING ROOM - NIGHT

Seth and Billy are now back on the couch, watching a different movie, an ACTION THRILLER this time. Seth seems distracted, lost in thought.

BILLY (noticing) Hey, what's on your mind, man?

SETH (avoiding eye contact) It's nothing. Just... been thinking about some stuff lately.

BILLY (concerned) Come on, Seth. You know you can talk to me about anything.

SETH (sighs) Alright, fine. It's just... I've been questioning some things about myself. Like, am I really as straight as I thought?

Billy's eyes widen, surprised.

BILLY You too? I mean, I've been questioning my own identity for a while now. I guess I've just been too scared to admit it.

SETH (softly) Yeah, me too. I've been struggling with my own internalized homophobia. I never thought I'd say this, but... I think I might be attracted to guys.

Billy smiles, relieved.

BILLY You know what, Seth? That's amazing! Embracing who you truly are takes courage. And hey, we're in this together.

They share a heartfelt moment, a mix of relief and realization.

INT. SETH'S LIVING ROOM - DAY

Weeks have passed, and Seth and Billy are now sitting side by side on the couch, watching a ROMANTIC COMEDY. This time, however, their reactions are genuine, and they're thoroughly enjoying the movie.

SETH (teary-eyed) You know what? Maybe love isn't so bad after all. Look at these two. They're adorable.

BILLY (laughing) I know, right? It's like we're seeing the movies in a whole new light.

SETH Absolutely. And you know what else? I think I might be falling for someone.

Billy looks at Seth, his eyes sparkling with hope.

BILLY (grinning) Oh, really? Do I know this lucky guy?

Seth takes a deep breath, then smiles shyly at Billy.

SETH (pointing at himself) Well, he's sitting right here.

Billy's face lights up with joy as he realizes what Seth means.

BILLY (happily) Seth, my bro,

User Is that it?

ChatGPT I apologize for the abrupt ending. Let's continue the story.

INT. SETH'S LIVING ROOM - DAY

Seth and Billy sit there, both smiling, the air filled with newfound understanding and affection.

SETH (sincerely) Billy, I've realized that the reason we spend so much time together isn't just because we're bros. It's because... I love you, man.

Billy's eyes widen in surprise, a mix of happiness and relief washing over him.

BILLY (overwhelmed) Seth, I love you too. More than just a friend. I've been feeling it for a while now, but I was scared to admit it.

They share a tender moment, a mixture of laughter and tears.

SETH (embracing Billy) We've come a long way, haven't we? From making fun of rom-coms and denying our own feelings to embracing them.

BILLY (nuzzling against Seth's shoulder) We have, and I wouldn't change a thing. I'm grateful for every step that led us here.

They sit there, cuddled together on the couch, watching the movie, but their focus is no longer on the screen. It's on each other, their newfound love, and the journey they're about to embark on.

FADE OUT.

by Anonymousreply 37May 23, 2023 7:59 PM

R37, I...think you might want to take those meds of yours

by Anonymousreply 38May 23, 2023 8:04 PM

Eichner ruined the movie, he made it unwatchable, like carrie with satc but dialed up to 1000000x he shouldn't be in movies or TV shows.

by Anonymousreply 39May 23, 2023 8:15 PM

Billy is even uglier than Irene Cara or Kylie Minogue. His wonky eye is just one out of a hundred reasons why he is repulsive.

by Anonymousreply 40May 23, 2023 8:17 PM

[quote]Eichner ruined the movie, he made it unwatchable,

I thought it was totally his movie.

[quote]His wonky eye is just one out of a hundred reasons why he is repulsive.

I've seen people write on DL that they think he's hot and then people agreeing.

by Anonymousreply 41May 23, 2023 8:19 PM

He's just completely untalented. And miscast. That part called for a cute gay. They should have cast a cute pornstar like drew valentino

by Anonymousreply 42May 23, 2023 8:20 PM

R39 He seems like one of those talents who can never not be “on” which works for his show Billy on the streets but you have to tone that energy down when portraying a character.

by Anonymousreply 43May 23, 2023 8:20 PM

R42 You had me until pornstar. Are you retarded or just a sex crazed whore.

by Anonymousreply 44May 23, 2023 8:20 PM

[quote]which works for his show Billy on the streets

That shite "works"?

by Anonymousreply 45May 23, 2023 8:21 PM

R44, cant' I be both ?

by Anonymousreply 46May 23, 2023 8:22 PM

[quote] Only low IQ conservatives use "SJW" as an insult

Sure, hon.

by Anonymousreply 47May 23, 2023 8:32 PM

I don’t understand the strong reaction. It wasn’t that bad of a movie and I have known plenty of guys who act like the lead character. The romantic target could not act though.

by Anonymousreply 48May 23, 2023 8:52 PM

I looked at the trailer it just looks like a gay version of a typical what are those awful movies with Diane Keaton and Bette Midler called? - all women being "hilarious". I can't think.

Where gays get it wrong is they think the whole gay thing is fascinating and hilarious. It might be for a few gays, but the heteros just don't find it very interesting. Truth be told.

by Anonymousreply 49May 23, 2023 8:58 PM

It's an irritating whingefest, and Billy is annoyingly unappealing!

by Anonymousreply 50May 24, 2023 1:20 AM

Poster R3 is the one making it all about trans and so-called log cabin gays. I disagree; R27, the trans characters added nothing to the movie and were obviously there to fill a quota. Apparently, trans need to be tagged onto every gay film now. Luke Macfarlane was the only good thing about it.

by Anonymousreply 51May 24, 2023 1:46 AM

R46 Touché

by Anonymousreply 52May 24, 2023 1:49 AM

I tried to like this, but it was awful. Billy was so unlikable. His tantrums throughout the movie were exhausting. Who would want to even hook up with him, never mind spend a whole dinner with him. Luke is good-looking but he's bland and he had nothing to work with character-wise because Billy sucked up all the attention.

And the sex scenes were lame. Wearing underwear? First they panned to a tree in Call Me By Your Name, and now Bros has two gays in undies having sex.

by Anonymousreply 53May 24, 2023 1:57 AM

R53 I think it's like when a straight guy falls in love with a bimbo feminist: gay version. That would explain the mcfarlainé character fallin in love with Frau Eischner.

by Anonymousreply 54May 24, 2023 6:13 AM

I don’t know why this movie got so much hate. It’s actually pretty good and has some strong moments. Yes, he is annoying….but so is his character. The museum scenes are funny.

by Anonymousreply 55June 4, 2023 6:50 PM

Whenever I see “Bros” I just think of the British 80s pop duo.

by Anonymousreply 56June 4, 2023 6:59 PM

R6, if you made it that far into the movie you saw all Luke's shirtless scenes and all but one of the jokes. Unless you were dying to hear Billy sing a country song in a nasal twang, you didn't miss enough to regret not finishing.

If someone had possessed the authority and sense to rein Billy in, there were the bones of a decent movie there that could have been filled out into something more appealing:

• Cut every bit of footage in which Billy repeated another character's words back to them in a whiny, mocking tone and you'd have an extra 30 minutes to develop the story more without conditioning viewers to hate the main character.

• Make Aaron's parents more disapproving and repressive rather than polite victims of Billy's hectoring screed and you'd have sympathetic conflict leading to the leads' falling-out in the family dinner scene, rather than the audience cheering Aaron to run away as fast as he could and get a restraining order.

• Make the big epiphany Billy's character has be not that he's loveable and deserves love (the first point being factually wrong, and the second just puffing his already clearly substantial ego), but that he has to give respect to get it in kind and that relationships have to involve consideration of other people's feelings and viewpoints. He just might have been redeemed enough for people to actually root for a happy ending.

• Remember that the movie is supposed to be a goddamn rom-COM and pepper some jokes and gags through the last 40 minutes.

by Anonymousreply 57June 4, 2023 8:52 PM

So I just watched it for the first time.

I nearly gave up in the first fifteen minutes. Eichner was so awful. But after awhile it was goofy little romcon. Too earnest (though subtle compared to And Just Like That.) But for me where it was bad it was so bad it kinda overwrote the parts where it was a goofy little romcon. Not sure it should have bombed as badly as it did, but it had some major weaknesses that doomed it. Eichner was bad casting. Just wrong for the part.

by Anonymousreply 58June 25, 2023 1:28 AM

I thought it was funny.

by Anonymousreply 59June 25, 2023 1:50 AM

I gave up when the hot guy said he prepared Billy to the other hot who just came out. He doesn't make me happy and you CHALLENGE me. Yeah, right.

by Anonymousreply 60June 25, 2023 1:55 AM

Luke Macfarlane's Hallmark movies are significantly better than this movie.

Sadly, he also has more chemistry with his female co-stars in those Hallmark movies than he did with Eichner.

by Anonymousreply 61June 25, 2023 2:17 AM

[quote] but you Log Cabinettes insist that all trans people are really gay people who were "forcibly transed"

Not "forcibly" and not a Repug. You can be a Dem and still have some common sense.

by Anonymousreply 62June 25, 2023 2:20 AM

Misleading title.

Miscast lead.

Wrong time (should have been a May/July release).

Wrong marketing agenda.

by Anonymousreply 63June 25, 2023 3:00 AM

The poster / movie title suggested it was going to be a comedy about two “straight”men who’ve been bros since college or something having a sexual awakening together.

Was I the only one who thought this?

It was totally misleading and I think the gays who thought that and watched the trailer were disappointed and tapped out. That’s what happened with me at least.

I was like ew this is going to be lame and my idea was better lol.

by Anonymousreply 64June 25, 2023 3:04 AM

OP Luke wasn’t particularly good…he’s just hot, which is a different kind of good.

by Anonymousreply 65June 25, 2023 3:11 AM

Meant to write that the hot guy preferred Billy. Damnable autocorrrect.

by Anonymousreply 66June 25, 2023 4:30 AM

Billy is the secret buttchild of Kevin Spacey and Leonard Frey.

by Anonymousreply 67June 25, 2023 5:10 AM

I mean I would have been a better lead opposite Luke over Billy.

and I'm pretty much non-descript. I think that works sometimes so that the audience member can imagine more easily that they're the lead.

Like Tom Cruise having forgettable girlfriends in his movies.

by Anonymousreply 68June 25, 2023 5:19 AM

I’m on the same page as R58. Bros was a passably acceptable romcom never rises above the sum of its parts, largely because Billy Eichner’s character is so unlikeable. It’s not his looks, or even his performance, but the way the character is written. He’s a major dick who doesn’t change in a believable way over the course of the story, although we’re supposed to believe this bachelor/bastard is willing to work on himself in order to be part of a long-term relationship, which he wants for the first time in his life. The supporting cast is charming (all of them), and a scene where Eichner throws a screaming tantrum in front of colleagues is later waved off by the same colleagues, who smile benevolently as Eichner sings a Garth Brooks song to show he’s a changed man. An entire Garth Brooks song. Nora Ephron would never.

Even the cheesier elements of the movie could have worked if it were a more Nora Ephron and less Judd Apatow, whose company produced it with their usual lack of taste. There would have been a wider audience if it less sex was shown onscreen. I’m not suggesting the sex should have been entirely erased, but (like the Garth Brooks song) the scenes went on longer than one might feel comfortable watching with a relative. Buried within Bros was a movie that could have done much better in theaters by not being so tone deaf about what people actually like to watch.

by Anonymousreply 69June 25, 2023 5:24 AM

I had to laugh at the group assembled for the museum organizing though they missed on having someone in a wheelchair.

by Anonymousreply 70June 25, 2023 5:49 AM

[quote]The poster / movie title suggested it was going to be a comedy about two “straight”men who’ve been bros since college or something having a sexual awakening together.

They should have called it "Gurls".

by Anonymousreply 71June 25, 2023 12:45 PM

I think the premise was that Eichner was supposed to be the male Schumer. Kinda good looking but not a model. I mean I know straight guys will fuck anything but who is believe Jon Cena is fucking Amy Schumer?

by Anonymousreply 72June 26, 2023 2:40 PM

I’ve said it a thousand times before. Billy should not have starred in this. He executive produced and I believe wrote the screenplay. He should have cast someone else.

by Anonymousreply 73June 27, 2023 1:38 AM

R72 That works among straight people cause straight guys will really put their dick in anything. She is blonde after all with big tits. But this film had to have different strides. We were marketing it to a mainstream audience, a 90% straight one. It should have been a hot male lead. This is a fkin romcom not a serious drama.

by Anonymousreply 74June 27, 2023 1:40 AM

Besides Billy Eichner being no leading man, the script was just meh.

by Anonymousreply 75June 27, 2023 5:50 AM

R75 But a hot guy would have sold it better.

by Anonymousreply 76June 27, 2023 5:51 AM

Or even two more average guys. Because it's hard to believe Luke McFarlane would fall for Eichner.

by Anonymousreply 77June 27, 2023 5:55 AM

He was attracted to Billy's mind and great personality.

by Anonymousreply 78June 27, 2023 6:33 AM

R78 lol, good one!

by Anonymousreply 79June 27, 2023 7:39 AM

Every time a therapist or a hot guy at the gym says to me, 'You're terrific! Just ask five people out this week! You'll be surprised.'

"Would you like to go out with me?"

"Oh. Well. I can't."

by Anonymousreply 80June 27, 2023 5:05 PM

I saw the whole movie at a theater with my husband and we laughed start to finish. It was a great night out. There aren’t enough comedies nowadays.

by Anonymousreply 81June 27, 2023 5:16 PM

That is Eichner's problem. He has developed the Billy on the Street character and his pretty much played the same on Difficult People. Same goes for AHS, pretty much the same role, the curmudgeon gay guy. That does not translate to a gay rom com lead.

by Anonymousreply 82June 27, 2023 7:11 PM

R82 He’s not versatile. That is the only persona he can play.

by Anonymousreply 83June 27, 2023 7:13 PM

This thread inspired me to watch it. Only one joke in about 30 landed, everything else in it had already been done better somewhere else. Eichner has negative charisma. MacFarlane didn't have much to work with (the making chocolate ambition was the lamest attempt at character development I have ever seen).

by Anonymousreply 84June 28, 2023 12:27 AM

“Whole movie?” Congrats for sitting through it, R81.

by Anonymousreply 85June 28, 2023 2:48 AM

Eicher is TALLER than Luke...that bugged the shit out of me.

The way Eicher's character fawned over Luke's he just needed to be shorter; it would have made that (stupid) fake wrestling scene in the park more fun or believable.

There's a reason leading men are taller than their leading ladies.

by Anonymousreply 86June 28, 2023 10:07 PM

This is the Bros movie I wanted to see. It appears to be some playful, on the set antics between Luke Macfarlane and Ryan Fawcett. Notice how completely Fawcett controls Luke, even though he is significantly shorter.
