The Little Mermaid Reviews

It’s… fine.

It’s not really a movie but a self-referential product mimicking a movie but “correcting” its “mistakes” because it needs to justify its existence as a beat-by-beat remake which takes no actual risks.

This will be played as a double feature with "Black Annie" in all Afrocentric schools on Movie Day.

These Disney live action remakes are heinously unnecessary and unwanted. But I guess they must be making good money.

by Anonymousreply 3May 22, 2023 2:50 PM

People don’t really want new things. They want stuff they are familiar with repackaged.

by Anonymousreply 4May 22, 2023 2:52 PM

R4 I wonder if that is true or not. It may be true for younger people since that is all they have gotten all their lives.

It's plainly obvious that Disney's only motivation for live-action remakes is to make money.

That's the only real goal of any film production overall anyway, but in the past directors usually had a vision and a passion for the movies they made. Now it's just a paint-by-numbers redo.

It's like the human spirit is just falling away from everything we do today.

by Anonymousreply 5May 22, 2023 3:00 PM

The problem is that Disney does try new stuff, Encanto and Turning Red were fantastic and creative, but the expectation right now from audiences is to only venture to theaters for something they already know, while Disney itself is training people to only expect them to retell its own stories with superficial cosmetic changes like race, pc-ness, etc.

by Anonymousreply 6May 22, 2023 3:08 PM

Do actual children like these live-action movies? This one seems like the worst one yet.

They are now doing a remake of Moana, which is not even ten years old. I did not realize that one was that popular, but my neices and nephews were hitting high school and college by then, so my Disney knowledge is not great from that era.

The Cinderella remake was at least a different interpretation, but since then, it really has been a paint by numbers remake. Adding scenes just to say something is different often just bogs down and makes the movies unnecessarily long. Even Mary Poppins 2, while a new story, was a careful checking off the list to follow the footprint of the first movie. That scene is supposed to make us think of the Chalk Garden scene - that song is supposed to remind us of Feed the Birds etc.

by Anonymousreply 10May 22, 2023 3:12 PM

But she’s a … Negress.

by Anonymousreply 11May 22, 2023 3:12 PM

[quote]it needs to justify its existence as a beat-by-beat remake which takes no actual risks.

I would have thought the star's enormous tits would have done that all by themselves.

by Anonymousreply 13May 22, 2023 3:13 PM

Anything that takes place underwater seems best suited to animation. The idea of actual human beings singing and dancing underwater is pretty stupid.

The new Avatar was great and the underwater scenes were gorgeous, but they didn't speak and sing while submerged.

by Anonymousreply 14May 22, 2023 3:13 PM

If you look back at the Disney Renaissance, that only happened because the studio only put out one animated musical a year, and it was a big event. The current marketplace now demands Disney put out multiple event films a year, so they retread these live action remakes as their big events because they simply can’t afford to be creative.

by Anonymousreply 15May 22, 2023 3:15 PM

R15 Not only that but Disney limited access to its older movies. They would release old animated movies on VHS for a very limited time so that if people missed the release without buying the movie, they had no way to see it until the next limited release. That's what built the hype about their animated movies and made people perceive them as being more 'important' than others.

I worked at Blockbuster video in high school and I still remember that in 1995, I had to answer the phone this way: "Thank you for calling Blockbuster Video, where you can pre-order a copy of Disney's Cinderella for just $17.99. My name is ____. How may I help you?"

To which every single customer replied, "Uh. Hello? Is this Blockbuster?"

But there was a long waiting list of Cinerella pre-orders because the movie had not been available for years.

And with inflation, that price today would be $36.

r15. That's because consumerism has changed. Sometimes it takes years from the simple pitch of an idea to the release of the project in movie theaters and V.O.D. and, nowadays, it's forgotten about a few weeks after its release, because the next hyped movie release is about to get released.

Nowadays, every week of the year a new "summer movie blockbuster" comes out, hyped in the press for at least a year prior to its release. Consumers don't have the luxury of time to really appreciate what they see, because it has become a chore to be part of the audience in order to share on social media how much the release sucks.

In fairness, extremists of either persuasion (liberal or conservative) are terrible at comedy, because they believe in censorship, albeit for different reasons, but they don't allow artists to fully express themselves, which good comedy requires.

by Anonymousreply 32May 22, 2023 3:59 PM

Ariel technically is Disney’s first Trans Princess, because she was assigned Mermaid at birth and transitions to human

The first Trans Disney character is of course Pinocchio, who was assigned Puppet at birth.

by Anonymousreply 33May 22, 2023 4:03 PM

I said it in the Melissa McCarthy thread, and I'm going to say it again here: why make the animals realistic? Animals can't emote, that's why they're anthropomorphized in animation. This was a great opportunity to re-imagine what all the talking animals look like but they went for realism, why? It's a stupid artistic decision and a stupid marketing decision. Who is going to buy a Flounder toy if he just looks like a fish. Also, the run time is over 2 hours, for a kid's movie, and we all know how patient kids are. The original was 83 minutes. All these blended live action/CGI remakes are totally bereft of any creativity. I would call it a soulless money-grab but Disney can't even do that part well anymore.

If you want to get into granular details as to why these remakes are awful, this guy rips The Lion King to shreds.

[quote]People don’t really want new things. They want stuff they are familiar with repackaged.

I recently read an article about how "nostalgia" is the number one money-maker in Hollywood right now. It's why Top Gut: Maverick, Mario Bros. and all the franchises keep smashing at the box-office. Audiences crave familiarity and comfort after a worldwide pandemic, I guess. I find myself going back to the 1980s films of my childhood whenever I feel stressed.

Also, why venture out to a crowded and expensive cinema nowadays, unless it's a huge spectacle of a movie that demands to be seen on a big screen? Most people have big, state-of-the-art TVs and sound systems at home that rival movie theaters, so why leave home?

by Anonymousreply 36May 22, 2023 4:15 PM

They should have stuck with Anderson's ending. The prince marries the princess, the Little Mermaid gets a knife to murder them, finally doesn't and dies dissolving into sea foam.

by Anonymousreply 37May 22, 2023 4:20 PM

Does Ursula shit in a shell-sink in this?

by Anonymousreply 38May 22, 2023 4:22 PM

They should've shown Ariel's whole family plus Flounder and Sebastian being dredged up in a drift net and left to die on the deck of a ship as refuse while the tuna are gutted and put on ice.

Or at least shown her sisters with chronic diseases from all the microplastics in their diets.

by Anonymousreply 39May 22, 2023 4:24 PM

by Anonymousreply 40May 22, 2023 4:24 PM

[quote]I find myself going back to the 1980s films of my childhood whenever I feel stressed.

You have a personality disorder.

by Anonymousreply 41May 22, 2023 4:26 PM

[quote]I wonder if people felt the same way when the eighth movie remake of The Wizard of Oz came out in 1939.

No, because up until then, those films had been silent shorts/features, with the most recent being in 1925, not counting the 1933 animated short.

Television was still in experimental mode in the late 1930s and would not become available to the public until the late 1940s.

VCRs were several decades away, so there was no way for the average person to watch silent movies, which were considered very passé by the 1940s and were often mocked.

It was in the 1950s that TV began airing silent shorts/features, which spawned a silent film nostalgia craze in the 1960s and a deeper respect for the art form.

Therefore, most people in 1939 did not know about the earlier silent film versions and probably vaguely recalled the cartoon short from several years earlier.

So they were looking forward to the MGM adaptation, which was among the Top 10 grossers of the year, but because of its massive budget, it barely recouped the first time around. However, it was very profitable when re-released in 1949.

Television also helped breathe new life into MGM's OZ with successful airings starting in the 1950s and becoming an annual tradition in the 1960s.

by Anonymousreply 45May 22, 2023 4:33 PM

Why is it "appropriation" when light-skinned people do it, but "progress", "magnificent" and "brave" when dark-skinned people do it?

I have no problem with this movie, and I think it looks really sweet, even as a jaded 50-something y.o. gay guy. The people who bitch about those of us who grumble about it want to say it's due to "racism". Which, those of us who grumble about it know isn't the truth (not for most of us, anyway). It's because this sort of thing has become routine and tiresome to the point of being offensive. It's lauded as somehow, for some reason, "better" due to the casting. Out of one side the mouth, Hollywood and the media tell us we should be colorblind. That only American Caucasians can be racist and that we need to see beyond skin tone. Out of the other side of the mouth come daily admonishments, lessons, and insistence that we must "talk about the race issue". A constant obsession with race. A constant drumbeat that we must think of race every day, in every aspect of society. That we must self-flagellate for the sins of our forefathers, people few of us are even related to. We must "talk about it" while also, somehow being "colorblind". So what SHOULD we be doing? I applaud The Little Mermaid being remade, and even remade with a black actress. But it was less an afterthought on the part of the studio as it was a contrived, intentional decision to "teach" something. We must be taught today. Entertainment, the news, everything must have an embedded lesson, we can't let a certain sector of the population get too comfortable, now can we?

Casting films, hiring Supreme Court justices, and giving awards based solely on the qualifications of race has now reached critical mass. The intention behind it isn't just noticeable anymore, it's oppressive. In fact, it's likely causing the same problem many hoped such things would somehow remedy. And it's going to get worse if America, Hollywood and the media don't calm the fuck down with pushing us all toward a giant race-based dumpster fire.

The new floptastic Indiana Jones made by Disney makes a cringe-worthy crack about capitalism (the characters all admitted to stealing with the last one saying it’s capitalism), and the recent Batman movie brought up “white privilege.” And Hollywood wonders why its films are bombing except for “Top Gun.”

[quote] How do they get around the fact that Snow White is called Snow White because her skin is as white as snow?

Why would they get around it? That's the whole point of the reboot.

Snow White is a Latinx princess whose stepmother is ashamed of her paleness and casts her out into the woods. The dwarves are white supremacists who adopt her and worship her as their Aryan goddess.

Snow lives with the shame of being pure as the driven snow, self-conscious about her curves and her paleness.

One day, the birds and flutterbys lead her to a clearing where all the woodland animals are engaged in a wild orgy.

She learns sex positivity, strips down and Lena Dunham, who voices her, sings an ode to her stretch marks.

One of the animals she mates with turns out to be her witchy stepmother, who inseminates her with a sleeping potion. The potion changes her constitution, though, and darkens her skin to a beautiful mocha. Her straight bob withdraws into tight curls. A handsome racially ambiguous stud happens upon her and awakes her with a kiss. She signs a consent form and they go away together and do anal on their very own OnlyFans account, living happily ever after!

The problem with Hollywood churning out the nostalgia is that most of the time it ends up being rather shit; a soulless money grab that never captures the spirit and creativity of the original.

Blade Runner 2049 is a rare exception that holds up with and actually adds to the original. On the other hand, we’ve got things like the terrible Star Wars sequels (if I’m honest only the original trilogy exists for me; it’s really the only SW the world needed), the Matrix’s lamentable sequel, pointless and unnecessary Indians jones sequels (ok so I’ve obviously not seen the new one but I can’t see it being much better than the Crystal Skull one). These Disney remakes are cynical and utterly needless. Is it simply so they can maintain the copyright or something?

9/10 times with these nostalgia crapolas it’s better to simply rewatch the original.

Merry Melodies once did a version of Snow White called Coal Black. Our heroine was a pretty Black girl who scrubbed all day but did "sing da blues in da night". It was probably made in the late 30s/early 40s.

“Why was ‘Top Gun: Maverick’ such a big hit?! That’s a film for peons!”

[quote] Except they’re not. Disney is producing flop after flop.

The B&B Remake did 1.263 billion box office worldwide

Aladdin did 1.051 billion

The Lion King did 1.663 billion

Saying nonsense on Datalounge doesn’t make it true

by Anonymousreply 102May 22, 2023 7:37 PM

I have a kid and have seen all of these remakes. The only one my child liked better than the original was Aladdin. Other than that, neither my kid nor her friends would ever choose the live action remake over the animated.

[quote]SCOOP: Disney production coordinator Allen March says his team is committed to "exploring queer stories" and has created a "tracker" to make sure they are creating enough "gender nonconforming characters," "canonical trans characters," and "canonical bisexual characters."

What about the FAGGOT characters?

White Hollywood’s attempts at diversity are always so self-conscious and stupid. They never get it right, because they’re so terrified of losing profit that it informs their every decision regarding this issue. It’s purely profit motivated so it reeks of the lack of sincerity. Just fucking create a diverse cast for this movie or that show and let the actors act. There’s no need to weigh everything with a pandering agenda. You can never satisfy the perpetually outraged anyway. So why bother? Just focus on making good films and television. Hiring non-white actors shouldn’t throw that intention off so much. It’s crazy.

Still waiting for the Fantasia live action movie.

Long Island Mermaid is Disney's first canonical sex worker character.

Meanwhile in #China’s #BoxOffice, ticket pre-sales for #TheLittleMermaid show no signs of reaction.

#Disney liveaction finished SUN with a scary $13k total after 3 days of pre-sales, for the whole MAY 25-28 period.

Could be the worst opening ever for Hollywood tentpole in China.

Are we gonna pretend that a black girl would let her hair get wet? The entire thing is beyond laughable. The dude playing Prince Eric is ugly, Melissa McCarthy is no singer, Ariel is ugly as sin, the other characters look and sound special needs. Then they butchered the classic songs to be woke. WTF is this suppose to appeal to? It’s one big liberal stereotype. Liberals are as bad at making content as Conservatives. They both approach shit with a social and political agenda attached. In many ways the Left is now the perpetually offended and moralistic crusaders as the Moral Majority was decades ago. No one wants to pay huge ticket prices to sit through a lecture that is also poorly written. This is what DEI leads to and now they’re striking for more money. lol. The majority of them shouldn’t have been hired in the first place.

Disney is giving us a black Ariel with creepy eyes and sporting a white girl wig.

Groundbreaking.

The 'critic' - I use the word lightly - in the Daily Beast had orgasms over how wonderful the movie is and how Halley Bailey is the greatest actress since the creation of cinema. I note the (male presumably) critic wears a pink tutu on his pic on Twitter.

Title: Long Island Mermaid

Genre: Grotesque Comedy

Logline: "Long Island Mermaid" is a twisted and comedic update of "The Little Mermaid" set in the eccentric world of New York City's East River. Lindsay Lohan takes on the role of Ariel, a chain-smoking, pill-popping mermaid whose outrageous adventures and unconventional friendship with a foul-mouthed Horseshoe Crab lead to a hilarious and bizarre journey of self-discovery.

Treatment:

Act 1:

Meet Ariel - Introduce Ariel (Lindsay Lohan), a rebellious mermaid living in the polluted depths of the East River. She's a chain-smoking, pill-popping creature who longs for something more exciting than her mundane underwater existence.

The Outcast Mermaid - Ariel is an outcast among her fellow mermaids due to her unconventional habits and peculiar friends. She forms an unlikely bond with a foul-mouthed Horseshoe Crab named Crusty, who becomes her loyal and sassy sidekick.

by Anonymousreply 123May 22, 2023 11:55 PM

The Human Obsession - Ariel becomes infatuated with the chaotic and colorful world of humans that exists just beyond the surface of the polluted waters. She yearns to experience their outrageous lifestyle and embarks on a mission to become human, with Crusty reluctantly supporting her outrageous quest.

Act 2:

Deal with the Sea Witch - In her pursuit of humanity, Ariel encounters Ursula, a devious and flamboyant sea witch with a knack for dark magic. In exchange for her voice (which Ariel willingly parts with since she prefers to communicate through profanity-laden gestures), Ursula grants her a pair of legs, plunging her into the world of humans.

Absurd Adventures - Ariel's transition to the human world leads to a series of absurd and hilarious misadventures. From trying to navigate the busy streets of New York City to getting caught up in outrageous parties and encounters with bizarre characters, Ariel's journey is filled with outrageous situations and unconventional humor.

Unlikely Romance - As Ariel explores her newfound humanity, she crosses paths with a quirky street artist named Eric. Their blossoming romance is unconventional and often comical, as Ariel struggles to adapt to human customs and Eric is intrigued by her mermaid origins.

[quote] It's plainly obvious that Disney's only motivation for live-action remakes is to make money.

As opposed to every single other movie studio?

by Anonymousreply 125May 22, 2023 11:57 PM

Act 3:

Self-Discovery and Acceptance - Ariel's wild and chaotic journey ultimately leads her to question her obsession with becoming human. She realizes that true happiness lies in embracing her mermaid nature and the unique qualities that set her apart.

Chaos Unleashed - As Ariel rebels against societal norms and expectations, chaos ensues. From crashing high society events to wreaking havoc on the streets of New York, Ariel and Crusty create a whirlwind of bizarre and outrageous situations that leave their mark on the city.

Embracing Uniqueness - In the climax, Ariel must confront her own insecurities and the consequences of her actions. With Crusty's unwavering support, she finds the courage to embrace her true self and discovers that being different can be a source of strength and joy.

Note: "Long Island Mermaid" is a grotesque comedic update that pushes boundaries and embraces a wild and unconventional sense of humor in the style of John Waters. The East River serves as a gritty and eccentric backdrop, adding to the absurdity and offbeat nature of the story. The film aims to provide outrageous laughs while also highlighting themes of self-acceptance and celebrating individuality.

Just checked out a cam version online. I was curious about Whatsherface as Ursula, so I watched only her scenes. The movie looks so garish and unnatural, and her hair didn't move/behave at all like hair would underwater. How can they get such a basic thing wrong in a movie in 2023, with all the technology available to them?

I'm sure the kiddies will eat it up. And there's nothing wrong with that, I also ate up lots of badly made, cheap-looking stuff as a child; imagination tends to compensate for any kind of wonkiness at that age.

I wonder if Halle Bailey is a good singer, because she looks like a frog in this movie.

by Anonymousreply 133May 28, 2023 7:40 PM

I saw it last night in West Hollywood and was worried there would be a bunch of screaming kids but it turned out there was instead a lot of screaming queens! Every time Halley sang they would scream and clap for her. I thought it was charming and Halle Bailey is perfect for the role. She will be a big star from this and the upcoming film musical of The Color Purple.
