Florida has a magat problem that needs to be flushed.

Watch how much the press does to avoid calling this a bellweather election.

She’s a blondie who looks like a Republican. Even her name sounds right wing.

^ Nice try R4. She's a local celebrity and ran and lost a congressional election previously. Voters know exactly who she is.

Yes I was surprised by this. It does show that pushback against DeSantis is happening organically.

Huh?

Bear in mind that those voting were skewed strongly over 60. Jacksonville, like Indianapolis, merged with the county so includes suburbs.

The largest US city that had a Republican mayor
It’s not that hard to get

[quote]Imagine if a Republican won an upset mayoral election in San Francisco or Boston or Seattle. That'd be a massive story, with political reporters teasing out all kinds of trends from it. Well, a Democrat just won an upset in Jacksonville, which is bigger than all those cities.

Born and raised in Jax, and this really warms my heart. I truly thought we were too ate up with repukes and deplorables. Not only that ,democrats pretty much got most of the city council seats. Im excited for the future. Im here to tell you that it was black folks and young people that made the difference in this election.

Of interest, there are more registered Dems than Republicans in Duval County. Turnout is key
by Anonymous | reply 14 | May 17, 2023 6:10 AM |
GOP had a huge turnout advantage. Crossover was the key, apparently.
Further down this tweet thread:
[quote]The Republican party spent $9 million on this mayoral race, compared to the Democrats $2 million, they had a turn out advantage in the thousands, absolutely none of it mattered
There's no denying anymore that the press and pundit class are just flat out refusing to admit what's happening with the electorate.

Good. Democrats need a better local politics game. The asshole Tea Party built their base city by city and county by county and we need to do the same
by Anonymous | reply 17 | May 17, 2023 10:40 AM |
R16, turnout in 2019 was 24%. But go ahead and convince yourself your attempt at deflection is actually making a good point.
by Anonymous | reply 18 | May 17, 2023 10:48 AM |
Overwhelmingly senior, R13. Very few younger people voted.
by Anonymous | reply 19 | May 17, 2023 12:05 PM |
R19 Bullshit dear. I watched the news. Many young people were voting. It also strikes me as odd the media isnt talking about the fact she is the 1st female mayor ever in Jax . Many of us long time residents were surprised at the fact she waon. The Good Ole Boy network was invented in this damn city, and has been entrenched for decades. Davis was just too unlikeable (but it must be said hes not bad looking) . Fat ass Ron is going to find out the same thing. Nobody likes you !

Young people vote in very low numbers everywhere. Not just the US - everywhere in the world. So were their numbers higher in this election? That's the benchmark you should measure it against.
by Anonymous | reply 21 | May 17, 2023 4:53 PM |
The media is still trying to frame all of this as two political parties against each other with two, reasonable sides worthy of debate as if we're talking about paying for infrastructure. It is no longer about that for many, many voters. They see what the right-wing stands for. There is nothing remotely normal about policies where you think a 10yo rape victim who becomes pregnant, should be made to go through with it and they'll sure as hell "protect her" from books, but guns, not so much.

Normal people are getting tired of politicians talking like they spend their entire day on Reddit, while the country goes to hell.
No one cares about trans fear-mongering or the stolen election lies or whatever other Culture Wall bullshit they're trying to sell.

Democrats also need a deeper bench of candidates. Winning local elections today will provide candidates for congressional races in years to come.
by Anonymous | reply 24 | May 17, 2023 7:36 PM |
Amen
by Anonymous | reply 25 | May 17, 2023 7:57 PM |
It wouldn't be a Dem winning without complete morons claiming fraud. MAGAts really think screaming "fraud" with every fucking election they lose, is a winning strategy.
by Anonymous | reply 26 | May 17, 2023 8:22 PM |
Jacksonville went back to Red in this November's presidential election (after turning Blue and voting for Biden in 2020.) How is the Dem mayor faring?
