James Mason

In honor of hiss 114th birthday, let's discuss the impeccable British actor James Mason.

An architect turned actor, Mr. Mason was in so many great screen classics: The Seventh Veil, Odd Man Odd, Madame Bovary, The Desert Fox, Julius Caesar, A Star is Born, 20, 000 Leagues Under the Sea, Bigger Than Life, North by Northwest, Lolita, The Fall of the Roman Empire, Georgy Girl, The Deadly Affair, The Last of Sheila, The Boys from Brazil, Murder by Decree, Evil Under the Sun, The Verdict, and The Shooting Party.

When not acting, Mr. Mason enjoyed studying architecture, music, and the classics. In 1981 he published his autobiography, but refused to write a tell-all because he said it would have been "rude."

An actor no one could ever say anything bad about.

He worked with very notorious people-Vivien Leigh, Alfred Hitchcock, Peter Sellers, Stanley Kubrick, and Judy Garland.

And he never said anything bad about them either.

You may find this old thread on him of interest.

As well as this one (now closed).

By the way, James Mason and Eric Porter worked together on two films, The Fall of the Roman Empire and The Pumpkin Eater.

by Anonymousreply 6May 16, 2023 2:26 AM

The most gorgeous voice.

by Anonymousreply 7May 16, 2023 2:41 AM

He was intensely handsome. I admit though, that I didn't become aware of him until I saw him in Salems Lot ( yes I know, I was just 16). As I got older I appreciated him more. There was just something about him that catches your attention.

Besides being a fine actor he was an internationally recognized sommelier

by Anonymousreply 12May 16, 2023 3:34 AM

by Anonymousreply 13May 16, 2023 3:34 AM

Loved him in The Pumpkin Eater. He was the scene stealing performance from a cast that consisted of Anne Bancroft, Peter Finch, Richard Johnson, Maggie Smith, Eric Porter, and Sir Cedric Hardwicke

Apparently his only child, a daughter named Portland (after comedian Fred Allen's wife, whom Mason and his wife adored more than anyone they had ever met), was quite spoiled, but that's the only thing bad I've ever heard in connection with him.

I loved him particularly in one of his final films, "The Shooting Party."

by Anonymousreply 18May 16, 2023 3:40 AM

Ahem!

by Anonymousreply 19May 16, 2023 3:42 AM

You forgot this gem, OP.

I've probably only seen a fraction of his filmography, but he always seemed to be good. In the '50s A Star Is Born, he has moments of being a truly scary mean drunk, more than any of the other actors who have played that role. He doesn't look like the most imposing guy, but there doesn't seem to be a limit to how far he'll go in his lack of control. But when he's crying out for help at the awards ceremony, and at other times, he can get you on his side and make you feel for him. It's my favorite of the four official versions of that film, and his great performance has a lot to do with it.

No one has mentioned "Five Fingers" from 1952.

I first saw this long ago when NBC Saturday Night at the Movies ran multiple films from 20th Century Fox and this was one.

Mason plays the valet to the British Ambassador in Turkey who was stealing photographing British documents and selling them for money to the Germans. Based on the exploits of the real spy whose code name was "Cicero".

^ should be only "photographing".

He was in town (Palo Alto) filming 'Heaven Can Wait' and came into the the bookstore where I was working. Everyone was hoping for Warren Beatty , who never showed, but I was satisfied with James. Back in the day 'talk like Chames Mason' was a thing.

Unfortunately he didn't say a word while he browsed but smiled the entire time. He was shorter than I expected but they always are.

My James Mason story.... once again. I went to see "If" at the movie theater in Lausanne when it came out. James Mason, who lived near Lausanne, was in the queue with a blonde girl/woman who appeared to be my age - maybe 21. Despite his advanced years, Mason was definitely still gorgeous.

They ended up sitting next to me. Mason kept his hand under her mini-skirt, playing around for the whole movie. Very distracting.

by Anonymousreply 28May 16, 2023 8:32 PM

We he hung?

by Anonymousreply 29May 16, 2023 8:34 PM

Oh, dear, R28.

So, he really was a dirty old man.

by Anonymousreply 30May 17, 2023 2:07 AM

R30 personally, I was disappointed as I hoped he was gay.

by Anonymousreply 31May 17, 2023 2:13 AM

R17

I just finished 'The Pumpkin Eater' and holy crap you weren't kidding, Mason is a magnificent creep. He looked like he was having a blast playing one too.

Rich father, married a rich woman, divorced his wife after decades of marriage and left all his money and assets to the second younger wife - who refused to leave it to his kids (including his ashes). Another old guy who gets sucked in by a hot young woman and destroys the family he spent decades building.

by Anonymousreply 33May 17, 2023 2:21 AM

R32 I am usually right
