I love Dolly Parton, but she's getting to be a little......crazy?

Or just a bit, too much? Lately, I've seen her pushing her own brand of dog food and pet accessories, cookbooks and cakes. She's now coming out with a "rock" album. I adore her but, how and why is she doing all of this? She's pretty up there in age, no kids. Could the money be that important? She's clearly a brilliant businesswoman, but wouldn't she want to try one new venture at a time or, I don't know, take a vacation on a yacht somewhere? Is she just going to burn out and end her career as a punchline?

[quote] Could the money be that important?

Dolly made bank when Whitney Houston recorded “I Will Always Love You.” She never has to work again.

I think what you’re seeing is a successful woman not knowing how to retire. Dolly doesn’t know what to do with herself and so she tries all this other stuff. She doesn’t know how to sit down and rest on her success.

[quote] I think what you’re seeing is a successful woman not knowing how to retire.

If she's happy and healthy enough to still be able to do what she loves, why should she stop? Why should anyone?

[quote] She doesn’t know how to sit down and rest on her success.

And not everyone wants to. Good for her for not giving up.

by Anonymousreply 2May 12, 2023 1:50 PM

Can we please just enjoy her before she's dead?

by Anonymousreply 3May 12, 2023 1:50 PM

This^^^^

by Anonymousreply 4May 12, 2023 1:52 PM

Honey, I never needed dancing boys.

by Anonymousreply 5May 12, 2023 1:57 PM

She gets a BRAVO for mostly standing on those shoes, in that outfit.

OP, you are a humourless scold.

Cher and Dolly can do whatever they want. They never really embarrass themselves in recent years. Even with the misses, they are likeable.

by Anonymousreply 6May 12, 2023 1:59 PM

Bitch stole the canopy from my Rhapsody in Blue.

by Anonymousreply 7May 12, 2023 2:02 PM

It goes deeper than you think OP. She has recorded music, lots of music, so content can be released posthumously. Which is smart. So many other last releases are demos or unfinished albums. She’s going to control that. Just like she has almost everything post Porter Waggoner. And worth a mention - her dog toys are exceptional.

by Anonymousreply 8May 12, 2023 2:05 PM

You keep Miss Dolly's name out your damn mouth, OP.

by Anonymousreply 9May 12, 2023 2:06 PM

I sure am, R3!

by Anonymousreply 10May 12, 2023 2:13 PM

Why is Dolly Parton singing what sounds like a Bon Jovi song? I love Dolly, but sorry, this is ear rot.

by Anonymousreply 11May 12, 2023 2:15 PM

Her voice is gone and she is a boring performer. Lipsync. Her gimmick is her innuendo comments that the yasss Kweens eat up. That song sounded pretty republican.

by Anonymousreply 12May 12, 2023 2:34 PM

R12 - Bless your heart and go to hell. OP Dolly is an artist - all artist need to keep doing new things with their art. That's the difference between a real artist and a singer. Dolly is American treasure. and when you say she is too much what you are really saying is that you don't understand the artist or the way her art works- which is why you are such an ice queen always willing to condemn.

by Anonymousreply 13May 12, 2023 2:40 PM

Dolly pretends to be a liberal, because she knows that’s where her faghag bread is buttered but she’s a big ol’ MAGA in private. The gays prop her career up, the straights don’t care about her except to go “cool she’s still alive” every 5 years.

by Anonymousreply 14May 12, 2023 2:47 PM

[quote] All artists need to keep doing new things with their art.

Sure, but how do cake mix and dog toys figure into that?

by Anonymousreply 15May 12, 2023 3:42 PM

Same OP. I preferred pre pandemic Dolly

by Anonymousreply 16May 12, 2023 4:31 PM

She was randomly nominated for the Rock 'n Roll Hall of Fame and said she didn't know why since she is a country singer. She was accepted into the Hall of Fame and then someone gave her the idea to record an album with rock stars since she had been deemed by the HoF to be one.

Dolly is the new Betty White. That was clear by the time Betty White died. Almost everyone loves Dolly. She is fun loving and kind and innocuous and talented with a good sense or humor and a tiny bit of a subversive edge, just like Betty.

She is now in Betty mode, and a backlash is imminent because she is 'trending' and almost universally loved.

by Anonymousreply 17May 12, 2023 4:56 PM

Between her amusement park and other ventures, Dolly employs thousands. As long as people are buying what she's selling, why should she retire?

And she donates lots of money to good causes.

by Anonymousreply 18May 12, 2023 5:08 PM

What R17 said. She is now more popular than ever. She is in her legendary phase. She is untouchable. So, she will milk it. You don’t get as rich and powerful as Dolly by saying “I have sufficient”. Plus, she does so much good with her money, let her make as much as she wants.

by Anonymousreply 19May 12, 2023 5:08 PM

I love her to bits and pieces, but it does seem like she's doing TOO MUCH. This new rock album has THIRTY songs. Were they all really keepers?

I watched her Christmas special in December and it was like a cheap community production. The dancing, the lyrics, the costumes. Sure, she is super fun in it, but was it worth producing as a full special?

I would rather watch Dolly do this stuff than watch Madonna perform with her deformed face and ass or Janet performing on a Dollar Tree-budget stage.

by Anonymousreply 21May 12, 2023 5:48 PM

R20 the 30 song-album thing is a new trick by artists & labels in the streaming era. You’re paid per stream, so 30 is better than 10. Expect more of that.

by Anonymousreply 22May 12, 2023 5:51 PM

Well, Ann-Margret has *her* rock album out and there's always...

Dolly is good in limited doses, maybe in a movie. She’s a sound byte, TikTok clip length person. Many in the worst concert thread said Dolly was was their worst. She’s never had big grossing or attended tours because her stage presence is nonexistent. She’s better on a talk show than in concert.

by Anonymousreply 24May 12, 2023 5:54 PM

Thanks for the insight R14. Sociopathic of her to donate 1m to vaccine research/production. Diabolical!

by Anonymousreply 25May 12, 2023 9:07 PM

She does give a lot away and I can't imagine what it costs to have all those free books sent to kids every month. It used to be to one area but she recently expanded it.

by Anonymousreply 26May 12, 2023 9:13 PM

Diabolical Dolly would make a great comic book villain!

by Anonymousreply 27May 12, 2023 9:13 PM

Dolly is a true national treasure. With all she does, I'd bet she's not working 9 to 5!

by Anonymousreply 28May 12, 2023 10:04 PM

What is she going to do, sit at home and not fuck her husband? Talk to her siblings’ innumerable offspring instead of throwing tuition/down payments at them? Hike up to an alpine chalet and read Rilke and Nietzsche? She had already lapsed into self-parody by the time she did Rhinestone. She seems more limber than Jane Fonda.

by Anonymousreply 29May 12, 2023 10:21 PM

I hope her next album is pop like jessica simpson did it in 2001

by Anonymousreply 30May 12, 2023 10:26 PM

I've seen Dolly in concert, and she was wonderful. I was really impressed with her guitar work.

by Anonymousreply 31May 12, 2023 11:11 PM

It’s better than just waiting around to die?

by Anonymousreply 32May 12, 2023 11:14 PM

There's no way to know if she's incontinent, that's her private business.

by Anonymousreply 33May 13, 2023 12:12 AM

She has always seemed very liberal too me, and she is a major businessman; she doesn’t want to alienate her conservative fan base.

The lyrics of this song sound like a lament on climate change. World on fire

by Anonymousreply 35May 13, 2023 1:18 AM

Dolly can do whatever Dolly wants to do.

She is DOLLY!

by Anonymousreply 36May 13, 2023 1:20 AM

I saw her in an interview when she was asked why she still was churning out so much work, and she replied that she wasn’t just working for herself—that a lot of people depended on her for their livelihoods, and she felt she owed it to them to be a responsible boss. She said if she doesn’t work, then a lot of other people are out of work and she wouldn’t let that happen. I admired her for being that thoughtful.

by Anonymousreply 37May 13, 2023 1:52 AM

I think what you’re seeing is a successful woman not knowing how to retire. Dolly doesn’t know what to do with herself and so she tries all this other stuff. She doesn’t know how to sit down and rest on her success.

I don't understand.

by Anonymousreply 38May 13, 2023 2:03 AM

Dollywood is a great amusement park. The rides are terrific and fun. The food was very good. There is a beautiful bald eagle exhibit. And the Dolly museum of items from throughout her career is well-curated.

By continuing to be in the public eye, it only helps Dollywood attract more visitors and keeps hundreds of people employed.

by Anonymousreply 39May 13, 2023 2:56 AM

The cake mixes, dog toys, etc are all for charity. She nearly supports the population of her home town. You may recall she donated $1 M to Covid vaccine research when NYC was dropping dead. She built new homes for all who lost homes in the big Tenn fire. Nobody gives back like Dolly. She's a Goddess.

by Anonymousreply 40May 13, 2023 3:14 AM

She did do that song for the movie Transamerica, I’d hardly call that MAGA behavior.

by Anonymousreply 41May 13, 2023 3:14 AM

She's a cisgender warrior!

by Anonymousreply 42May 13, 2023 3:26 AM

The inevitable backlash and accusations that she's faking her way through today's purity tests are unfounded and annoying.

She's been consistent in her statements for as far back as I have seen:

She always thought the town tramp was the prettiest woman in town and she spent a lot of money to look like her.

She is a Christian, and to her that means not to judge others and instead to accept everyone as they are and leave judgment to God.

She has never gotten political in the sense of criticizing individual politicians et al but she has demonstrated her political leanings by answering questions as above. She casts judgments only on judgmental people and hypocrites with the above explanations.

She has always put her money where her mouth is and she is not charitable for attention according to many accounts. She has given a lot of money to a lot of causes on the grounds of anonymity, and she has founded her own charitable projects that are not self-profiting enterprises like Lady Gaga's, the Trump family's, Bill Gates's foundations et al. are. She has created charities that pass her money through to benefit others. She gave money to relieve a whole town in Tennessee devastated by flooding.

And on top of all this, she has a delightfully crass sense of humor and she is a country girl who without formal instruction taught herself to play these instruments: Dulcimer, Autoharp, Banjo, Guitar, Electric guitar, Fiddle, Piano, Recorder, Saxophone, Harmonica, Violin, Mandolin, Pan-flute.

My dad had a friend when he was young in NC who had some kind of disease that paralyzed most of his body. He could only move his hands. They took him to a Dolly Parton concert and he had to be propped up along the aisle. Someone told Dolly about him and she came down into the audience and sang to him, and then into the mic she said, "You keep your hands offa my titties, boy!" and giggled.
