“Past Lives”- this movie looks so good!

I can’t wait to watch this one! It looks amazing.

Same, I've been hearing such great things about it. Comes out June 2nd, apparently.

by Anonymousreply 1May 11, 2023 1:43 PM

Wow. This movie really blows.

by Anonymousreply 2August 29, 2023 6:04 PM

Beautiful. Saw it at the theater. Bittersweet romantic movie with a light touch. Highly recommended.

by Anonymousreply 3August 29, 2023 6:16 PM

Yeah, I saw it some time ago and was very disappointed. Unfortunately, I got hyped for it way too much, the movie is just okay. No particular achievement for a first-time director like it's touted to be. In fact, I was struggling to discern the director's "clear visual language" that some critics kept mentioning. Unless they meant her work on the extras in the background, which I found overly mannered. She was too in love with that one philosophical notion she had and was struggling to stretch it out into a feature. Should have been a short.

The fact that characters conflate the verbs "immigrate" and "emigrate" right at the start and then keep doing it rubbed me the wrong way and it was all downhill from there. Love Greta Lee, but I liked her better in her previous work.

by Anonymousreply 4August 29, 2023 6:17 PM

This is terrible. I can’t believe people think this is Oscar worthy. Writers in their early 30s shouldn’t pretend to be Proust.

This was just completely unconvincing. The characters lacked dimension and barely seemed like game pieces. Everything was at a distance, nothing was investigated. Cringe-worthy dialogue. Turn the sound off and it just seems like some amateur, cliched ad reel.

The lead was so smug and opaque, given nothing to work with from the writer-director. This film is proof that being South Korean is fashionable but no guarantee of actual talent. The writer-director, Celine Song, is a world-class mediocrity.

by Anonymousreply 5August 29, 2023 6:29 PM

I still don’t get this movie and it perplexes me that people still talk about this being a big awards player. I mean this movie isn’t just bad - it suuuuuuuuucked.

I guess we’ll have to wait for Céline Song’s second film before everyone realises what a terrible filmmaker she is (like Emerald Fennell now - which I called years ago).

But honestly, the acclaim for this seems to be like a hive mind thing - if something has the trappings of success (A24, Korean filmmaker) then it must be a success. I don’t even know how people sit through it.

I liked the movie well enough, but it is overrated as is Greta Lee’s performance and Celine Song’s direction.

John Magaro, who plays Lee’s husband in the film, gives the best performance. Teo Too, the Korean actor in love with the Lee character, is good-looking with a sexy body.

But the film is very misty watercolor memories, lots of dreamy mooning around, a central female character around whom the men revolve, it is very much a woman’s film and a female fantasy. Which is fine but not my cup of tea. There is something very wispy, undefined and inconclusive about it which is unsatisfying. That may just be my gay male point of view. But I make no apology for that.

by Anonymousreply 7December 3, 2023 2:31 PM

Sorry, a typo above. Teo Yoo is the name of the handsome Korean actor in “Past Lives.”

by Anonymousreply 8December 3, 2023 2:32 PM

I just finished watching this and it was phenomenal. I loved it. It’s a beautiful story and Greta Lee is wonderful!

Everyone keeps on saying Adam Driver was robbed of a nomination or Viola was robbed, but no, they weren’t. Who was? Teo Yoo. He should be nominated along with Greta Lee. He was wonderful. I loved him!

by Anonymousreply 9December 11, 2023 11:43 PM

This is one of the best films that came out this year. I found myself indulged in the story. The writing was phenomenal and the actors were amazing. I loved Teo Yoo so much to the point I wanted Nora and him to end up together despite her marrying that Jewish man. The scene with them conversing in the bar really was beautiful, and after she walks him to his Uber and then walks back home and breaks down, apologizing to her husband. I felt that. But I also wanted her with Jung Hae.

A beautiful film.

Omg. Teo Yoo had me fooled with this movie because I was convinced he truly didn’t speak good English but he’s fluent in English. And he’s so fucking handsome. Omg.

It only showed in my town for a week and was gone before I could see it the next weekend. Which streaming service has it?

by Anonymousreply 12December 12, 2023 2:37 AM

R12 none yet. I rented it from Prime

by Anonymousreply 13December 12, 2023 2:44 AM

Thank you, R13! I'll do the same.

by Anonymousreply 14December 12, 2023 2:45 AM

It was good with a very strong premise but didn't quite get to the level of praise being heaped on it. The current need to gush about women and minority directors is patronizing. There's something more that can be done with this concept. I'd definitely be interested in seeing what the director does next.

by Anonymousreply 15December 12, 2023 3:27 AM

R15 you’re right, there is more that can be explored with this “concept”, but that isn’t what Celine did and what she did was beautiful. It was a film where you felt you were eavesdropping in on this very intimate relationship. Your coulda woulda shoulda mentality should really be kept to yourself.

by Anonymousreply 16December 12, 2023 3:31 AM

Keep talking, R15. R16 is one of those obnoxious only-post-what-I-agree-with types, which is not what some of us are here for.

by Anonymousreply 17December 12, 2023 4:10 AM

R17 what is the “concept” you speak of?

by Anonymousreply 18December 12, 2023 8:43 AM

The loser still hasn’t answered. What is the concept?

by Anonymousreply 19December 20, 2023 7:20 PM

Enjoyed this film, but it is pure fantasy. People in real life don't let go/accept past loves this easily.

by Anonymousreply 20December 20, 2023 7:52 PM

R20 some people do.

by Anonymousreply 21December 20, 2023 8:02 PM

R20 did you watch the film?

by Anonymousreply 22December 20, 2023 8:02 PM

This was a very good movie. I loved how simple yet moving it was.

by Anonymousreply 23December 21, 2023 12:09 AM

R20 again, I’m convinced you didn’t even watch it. You go on every thread commenting on shows and movies you don’t even bother watching.

It’s a great drama. You clearly didn’t watch.

by Anonymousreply 24December 21, 2023 3:01 AM

A proper review.

It’s a heartbreaking film.

by Anonymousreply 26February 4, 2024 1:08 AM

Premiering on Showtime next week if anyone is interested.

by Anonymousreply 27February 4, 2024 1:51 AM

Where is this turd streaming? Seriously.

by Anonymousreply 28February 4, 2024 2:41 AM

Loved it. In fact I'm watching it with commentary as I type this!

by Anonymousreply 29February 4, 2024 3:59 AM

Heartbreaking? It's rather lame. The two leads lack any chemistry.
