Jackie Zeman is DEAD TO ME

RIP, Barbara Jean

Jacklyn Zeman has been a beloved member of the ‘General Hospital’ and ABC family since she originated the iconic role of Bobbie Spencer over 45 years ago. She leaves behind a lasting legacy for her Emmy-nominated portrayal of the bad girl turned heroine and will always be remembered for her kind heart and radiant spirit.

We are devastated by the news of her passing, and send our deepest condolences to Jackie’s family, friends and loved ones.

by Anonymousreply 1May 11, 2023 3:08 AM

May she R.I.P. I'm hoping there will be a grand sendoff for Bobbie onscreen. Terrible to find this out.

by Anonymousreply 2May 11, 2023 3:29 AM

Ok - that just tears it. People from my youth are dying. I used to race home on the school bus to see bad girl Nurse Bobbi scheme to get Scotty away from Laura. Didn’t she pretend to be pregnant? Argh. We are all getting old.

by Anonymousreply 3May 11, 2023 3:41 AM

I was never really a big GH fan, but I always liked her when I did watch.

by Anonymousreply 4May 11, 2023 3:45 AM

I wasn’t expecting that! She was such an integral part of GH for decades-wasn’t Luke put on contract to take some heat off the Bobbie character, who the audience hated for breaking up Laura and Scotty?

If they make her memorial all about that asshole daughter Carly and that mumbling lunatic Sonny, I will toss a brick through my TV screen.

70? Was that in Zeta Jones years?

by Anonymousreply 9May 11, 2023 4:14 AM

by Anonymousreply 21May 11, 2023 5:35 AM

She had a lot of charisma on GH

by Anonymousreply 22May 11, 2023 5:36 AM

I loved her Jersey accent.

by Anonymousreply 23May 11, 2023 5:46 AM

I’m shocked. Used to watch GH with my mother. I remember her mostly from the years she owned the Brownstone. I haven’t watched the show in years, but I was recently channel surfing and she was on. She was such a mainstay. I am curious how she died. I hate to say it, but I hope it wasn’t during a cosmetic procedure. It looks like she had multiple facelifts.

by Anonymousreply 24May 11, 2023 6:17 AM

My first thought for cause of death was tragic plastic surgery fatality, after a certain age anesthesia becomes harder to tolerate. Official story is cancer, but who knows. Isn't hubby a plastic surgeon? Would be bad for business.

by Anonymousreply 25May 11, 2023 6:24 AM

This is all that bitch Nina’s fault!

by Anonymousreply 26May 11, 2023 6:42 AM

R8 That would be epic. If anything, they'll probably have Sarah back as a guest performer, similar to Yvette Nicole Brown at Epiphany's service. Possibly Tamara Braun too, although she left on bad terms.

by Anonymousreply 27May 11, 2023 6:58 AM

How old was Jackie. I do know she was married to the late 1960s DJ Murray the K.

by Anonymousreply 28May 11, 2023 7:00 AM

Murray was 30 years older than Jackie. He died of cancer shortly after they divorced in 1981.

by Anonymousreply 29May 11, 2023 7:08 AM

How the hell could she only be 70? I agree that must be in dog years.

by Anonymousreply 30May 11, 2023 7:11 AM

R30....I thought the same thing. No fucking way was she 70. I was a little kid when she was on GH. Oh hell no!!. Calling her 70 is like calling Maxie 150 pounds at the Nurses Ball. LIES!!

R.I.P Jackie, thanks for all the good memories . for 3 yrs, I'd hurry home from school to watch GH, and Always loved your storylines. Really sad.

by Anonymousreply 34May 11, 2023 7:52 AM

I liked her, I was a big GH in the mid to late ‘80s & loved the rivalry between Lucy & her. I only tune in every now& then I watched the Nurses’ Ball eps, & it was so nice to see her, I laughed out loud when Lucy crashed though the banner during Bobbie’s eulogy of her, & her stunned reaction, “Lucy, you’re alive?!?”

I remember a jokey Soap Opera Digest pic of her titled: Orange You in a Good Mood? She’ll be missed, she brought a lot of happiness to so many people.

by Anonymousreply 35May 11, 2023 7:54 AM

Has Rachel Ames commented yet?

by Anonymousreply 54May 11, 2023 12:11 PM

Omg, watching the clips at R19, I forgot that Bobbie was married to Tony. That’s when GH was still good in the Brenda years. I can’t believe how bad the show got. They sidelined the vets and any new character that came along was barely featured unless they were involved with the unholy trio of Sonny/Jason/Carly and the endless dumb mob storylines. Are they still dominating the show? I thought OLTL was the far superior show at the time of cancelation, but GH had more of a legacy and I guess higher rated. It’s crazy how in like 20 years, they went from dozens of soap operas, the genre having its own cable channel, magazines etc.. to 4 shows now left.

by Anonymousreply 55May 11, 2023 12:14 PM

I think soap operas will make a comeback in 20 years, but with new shows. Not GH, not OLTL. Completely new shows.

by Anonymousreply 56May 11, 2023 12:17 PM

I don't know how these soaps survive. Huge casts, sets, writers, hair/make up and crew... and for what? 2-3M viewers on a good day.

by Anonymousreply 57May 11, 2023 12:18 PM

That’s every day. That’s not bad. Luke and Laura’s wedding scored 30 million.

by Anonymousreply 58May 11, 2023 12:23 PM

Lol, R57, streaming platforms will spend $100 million on prestige limited series that reach a fraction of that.

Abbott Elementary, ABC’s primetime break out hit, does 3 million in L+3 on a good week.

by Anonymousreply 59May 11, 2023 12:28 PM

Hey - GH has something like 200,000 women 18-49 viewers - their target demo. That’s enormous! lololololololololol

by Anonymousreply 60May 11, 2023 12:31 PM

That Barbara Jean is a HUSSY!

by Anonymousreply 61May 11, 2023 12:37 PM

I was surprised at the people who were questioning her age. When she started on GH in the late 70s, she was part of the "young" scene. 70 seems about right.

by Anonymousreply 62May 11, 2023 12:45 PM

Given that she was just on a few days ago and Leslie Charleston hasn’t been seen for over a year, this is really not the GH obit I was expecting to read.

I’m just remembering Wendy Rich announcing John Beradino’s death when she accepted the Best Series Emmy in 1996. That was said, but you know, he was…old. Jackie wasn’t old. Except that now, she’s only about ten years younger than he was when he died.

by Anonymousreply 74May 11, 2023 2:25 PM

Sad and yes, surprising news. I think the age is right. I found high school yearbook pics of her on ancestry.com from 1969 and she looked about 16ish in them.

I haven't watched GH regularly since about 1996, and only rarely tuned in since then, and the quality of the show has dropped dramatically since then, but when she was on, she never phoned it in. She really added a lot of heart to the show. Her acting during the BJ dying storyline was one of the most heartbreaking things on the show.

Laura Snaggletooth Sisk is lucky she escaped that gas station in Maryland. What a fucking cunt.

by Anonymousreply 89May 11, 2023 4:43 PM

[quote]LW never surprises me lol not at all. Out of all of the Carly's, she seemed to have the least mother/daughter chemistry with Jackie.

By the time Laura Wright joined in late 2005, the show was barely using Jackie Zeman. Brian Frons had ordered that Bobbie was no longer a character the show should write for since she was over 50 and should only be used minimally. Frons did that with virtually all the veteran actors except Luke and Tracey.

So, when LW came on the show JZ was rarely around for them to play mother-daughter scenes together.

by Anonymousreply 90May 11, 2023 4:46 PM

Is LW the current Carly? I really only like Sara Brown and her replacement.

by Anonymousreply 91May 11, 2023 4:47 PM

Yes, LW's stank ass currently pollutes GH as the fourth Carly.

Before that, she stank up Guiding Light and Loving/The City.

by Anonymousreply 92May 11, 2023 4:56 PM

I was shocked to hear this news. I watched GH in the 1980s. I know none of us ever expects to hear something like this. This one hit me hard just like the death of Lisa Brown (from GL and ATWT). It was reported that Lisa also had a battle with cancer. This does make me a bit sad.

And that was that.

A class in soap opera technique would be hilarious to watch. I’m picturing Henry Winkler’s character in Barry.

by Anonymousreply 98May 11, 2023 10:03 PM

It's warmed my cold, black heart to see how much out an outpouring of emotion there's been on social media. Bobbie hadn't been front and center for over 20 years, and yet there are scores of people posting memories of her. And a lot of the cast member tributes have been lovely.

by Anonymousreply 99May 11, 2023 10:19 PM

She just always seemed so grateful to still be around. She often tweeted Frank, thanking him for including Bobbie in an episode. It was kind of sad, really. She helped build that show and then ended up thanking that hack for an appearance here and there.

by Anonymousreply 100May 11, 2023 10:22 PM

There was a school in NYC that taught soap opera acting techniques for many years (along with regular television acting and commercial acting) called Weist Barron. I think it's actually still around in some form under different ownership, but not sure they still teach the specific soap technique. Larkin Malloy was one of the teachers there for a while. Some of the alumni that became stars in the biz included Peter Reckell and Crystal Chappell.

Has Tony Geary commented on Barbara Jean's death?

by Anonymousreply 102May 11, 2023 10:52 PM

That clip at R85 reminds me a bit of the SMG Kendell - Lucci Erica scenes. When is the last time a younger actress or actor came on and truly invigorated the show with fresh blood and elevated a veteran's scenes? Also, when is the last time they let a confrontation go on like that without doing a quick cut-away to another scene? I understand why they sped soaps up, but sometimes you really should milk out the drama when things come to a head, and am not sure that happens that much anymore.

If I remember correctly, the Bobbie-Carly relationship did not magically heal when Bobbie finally accepted that Carly was her daughter. There was no insta-bond.

by Anonymousreply 105May 11, 2023 11:05 PM

[quote]Why did she fuck up Her face ? She had the perfect natural nose

I dunno, but she'd been messing with her looks for a long time. That was a topic on various discussion boards more than 20 years ago, when the character was still getting stories of her own. Around '99, she suddenly had enormous breasts (predictable nicknames ensued: "Boobie," "Boobzilla"), and her face started to get that stretched, inappropriately surprised look.

If I were to see a 1999-2001 clip, the work she had had done at that time would probably look mild now, because she went back for more and more in ensuing decades, but it was startling at the time. Not in a good way.

Someone above noted that Frons didn't want her heavily featured, but she had had a decreased presence for a while before he got there. I always wondered if the extreme cosmetic surgery was a reason. If she were trying to maintain an appearance of youth and vitality in hopes of still being in the thick of things, it was bad strategy. I stopped seeing her in Excedrin commercials talking about her migraines around that time too.

None of that takes away from the major point that her death is sad news, and she was a major presence on that show for a long time. I hope whatever the cause was, it was a peaceful and painless passage.

by Anonymousreply 123May 12, 2023 1:00 AM

R106 Oh right I'd forgotten all about her being an Excedrin spokesperson lol

Right she was starting to get phased out shortly before Frons arrived, then Frons/Phelps pretty much phased her out entirely. I felt bad for her since she wanted to stay on; although the plastic surgery most likely played into it, I can't blame her for getting it, for she was working in a youth-obsessed industry and unfortunately, GH wasn't interested in too many actresses over 40 at that time, seeing how Felicia was phased out as well and Lucy wasn't brought back full-time after Port Charles ended. Frons/Phelps were like-minded in the sense that they preferred younger actresses, give or take a few exceptions. Carly was the leading female by then and with the mob front and center, Bobbie unfortunately became secondary as Carly's mom. It wasn't until Frank and Ron that Bobbie was on more, even if for not too long, she got more under them than she did under Frons/Phelps, who had her relocated to Seattle.

by Anonymousreply 124May 12, 2023 1:01 AM

R92 😆 😆

by Anonymousreply 125May 12, 2023 1:06 AM

R96 There's a story of how she landed the role on GH- apparently her character on OLTL, Lana McClain, was killed off. In her final scenes, Gloria Monty happened to see the episode on the monitors at the ABC studio. She was impressed and stated that she wanted that actress on GH.

by Anonymousreply 126May 12, 2023 1:10 AM

R103 Actually the character of Carly was loosely based off of the Erica/Kendall storyline. Sarah Michelle Gellar had even auditioned for Carly after being fired from AMC, as well as Tara Reid, Steve Burton's then-girlfriend. Someone suggested to SMG that she shouldn't even go out for the role, since it was too similar to Kendall, and that she should try her luck outside of soaps, leading to her being cast as Buffy.

Honestly, how did Jackie not win awards?

by Anonymousreply 129May 12, 2023 2:00 AM

She lost her three Emmy races to Rena Sofer, Cynthia Watros, and Michelle Stafford. For whatever reason, she wasn't nominated for the work she did in 1998.

by Anonymousreply 130May 12, 2023 2:13 AM

She was also nominated in 1981 when she lost to Jane Elliott.

by Anonymousreply 131May 12, 2023 2:15 AM

Either Jackie or Sydney Penny should have won in 1995 over Rena Sofer.

by Anonymousreply 132May 12, 2023 2:26 AM

WHET the actress who played the nutty and dangerous Heather Webber back in the 80s? She was really good too.

I think that Zeman was lucky to have not been relegated to standing behind the nurses' station with a black polyester sweater over her nurse's uniform like poor Emily McLaughlin as Nurse Jessie Brewer! McLaughlin also remained on General Hospital from the very first episode until the day she died!

by Anonymousreply 133May 12, 2023 6:59 AM

R133 Robin Mattson? She was Heather during the 80's. Very good actress, although retired now, for the most part. Now whenever Heather appears from here on out, they will still have her played by Alley Mills.

by Anonymousreply 134May 12, 2023 7:14 AM

This pic from Robin Mattson’s Instagram made me feel 100 years old.

I don’t want Gina Capwell or Heather Webber worried about hip surgery.

Jackie left GH briefly i!n 1981, didn’t she? I am surprised Marland didn’t nab her for Guiding Light like he did with Jane Elliot. He always spoke highly of Jackie.

Offsite Link
by Anonymousreply 135May 12, 2023 7:29 AM

Yes, Jackie was off GH in late 1981 or early 1982 for about 6 months. Seeing if she could land other acting gigs. When nothing ever came up, Gloria welcomed her back to GH.

If Marland had nabbed her, what role would he have given her on GL? What late 20s female characters were debuting at that point? Lisa Brown was already the star of the GL as Nola by that point.

by Anonymousreply 136May 12, 2023 8:11 AM

The two that come to mind (and she probably wouldn’t have been right for either) is a recast Rita Bauer, or Maureen Reardon. I can’t see Jackie as a matriarch figure even though Bobbie sort of took on that role.

by Anonymousreply 137May 12, 2023 8:14 AM

For either Rita or Maureen, it would have been a bit of deSORASing going on for Jackie to play the part.

Maureen debuted in late January 1982, so the timing would certainly have been right for Jackie to play the part.

Rita was so identified with Lenore Kasdorf, I doubt Marland would have risked fan outrage recasting Rita with someone else just six months after Rita left town in summer 1981. But it would have been intriguing casting to put Jackie in the part.

by Anonymousreply 138May 12, 2023 8:26 AM

She fucked *everyone* through the years over there. God bless and rest easy, you’ve earned it.

by Anonymousreply 139May 12, 2023 8:29 AM

That fat stupid fucker CaseySHutch has to insert his fat ass into everything by sending a tribute to Jackie to everyone in soapland- making it all about himself and not Jackie. Fat Casey never even met Jackie. Dumb soap twitter fans. No wonder the execs laugh at the fans. Inserting his fat ass as if he was a GH cast member was a stupid idea.

by Anonymousreply 140May 12, 2023 10:31 AM

[quote] I don’t want Gina Capwell or Heather Webber worried about hip surgery.

I think I’d read somewhere that Robin has Parkinson’s, which is even worse, somehow.

[quote] She lost her three Emmy races to Rena Sofer, Cynthia Watros, and Michelle Stafford. For whatever reason, she wasn't nominated for the work she did in 1998.

I don’t even know which of those I think she deserved it the most. I perhaps have the strongest memories of 1998.

by Anonymousreply 141May 12, 2023 11:40 AM

As GH devolved over the years, so did the character of Heather Grant Webber. She returned periodically (Mattson) but each time her character got sillier to the point she was finally a cartoon. GH has a terrible habit of bringing back fan favorite characters only to thoroughly trash them. Also see Frisco Jones, Rick Webber, Paul Hornsby, Holly Sutton, Duke Lavery -- I think Robert Scorpio is one of the characters to come back more or less intact, and that because Tristan Rogers will fight for it.

by Anonymousreply 142May 12, 2023 11:50 AM

Never heard of Robin having Parkinson's, but she did have knee surgery last summer and also needed to have hip surgery according to a posting she made on social media back in November. With all of that happening, it's not so surprising they had to recast.

by Anonymousreply 143May 12, 2023 11:56 AM

[quote]GH has a terrible habit of bringing back fan favorite characters only to thoroughly trash them. Also see Frisco Jones, Rick Webber, Paul Hornsby, Holly Sutton, Duke Lavery

...Stefan Cassadine. Not a decades-spanning character with a storied history, but he did have many fans from his first run, and his return was so annihilating that if you had liked him before, you wished they'd left well enough alone. First they had him get half his face burned off, and then he was skulking around in the tunnels trying to rape Lydia.

by Anonymousreply 144May 12, 2023 12:07 PM

I forgot to mention both Sean Donely (who reverted to being a ruthless con man after decades of redemption) and Dr. Noah Drake (who went from charming bachelor to alcoholic jerk who abandoned his sons). I think the powers that be must hate classic GH knowing what shit they're producing now, so they deliberately seek out its annihilation. In one of the most bizarre rewrites of history, they had Susan Moore give birth to twins and not even know it. LOL

by Anonymousreply 145May 12, 2023 12:17 PM

I think Robin reminds me a bit of Marj Dusay. Both are/were talented and both did great work. Both had characters that leaned into villainy and comedy and both have played roles in a very grand and over the top way.

For Robin: Gina on SB, Heather on GH, and Janet on AMC

For Marj: Alex on GL, Pamela on SB and Vanessa on AMC

I think "over the top" is a hard tightrope to walk and sometimes writers and directors either want to make it all even bigger, or just don't direct and let the actor go big. Anyway, I think both of them had the situation R142 describes.....where the character devolves or just becomes a cartoon.

by Anonymousreply 146May 12, 2023 2:24 PM

by Anonymousreply 148May 12, 2023 4:05 PM

Kin's Insta tribute was touching, but it obviously took some time to put togther. Seems like family, friends and the show knew about her cancer battle.

This year's Nurses Ball gave her a bigger story than usual and also had a flashback tribute. Looking back now, it certainly seems like a well deserved "send me my flowers while I'm still around" homage to her. Similar to the one they gave TG.

by Anonymousreply 151May 12, 2023 4:21 PM

That tribute clip that fat Casey did wasn’t about Jackie. It was about Fatso trying to get himself a job on GH. So shameful.

by Anonymousreply 152May 12, 2023 4:24 PM

Someone mentioned the parallels between Jackie's passing and Lisa Brown (an actress who was on GL and ATWT) and they gave me a moment of pause.

Both played characters created by Douglas Marland, bad girls who came to town to stir shit up and who were eventually reformed.

Both died of a very quick moving cancer at roughly the same age (Lisa was 67, Jackie 70).

And, perhaps most coincidentally.....one of their final scenes, if not THE final scene, had them leaving a room, waving and blowing a kiss......

S P O O K Y.

Tony Geary Statement:

GH‘sAnthony Geary, who played Zeman’s TV brother Luke for nearly 40 years (until his 2015 retirement), was among those honoring the actress. “For 40 years, I was fortunate enough to play Jackie Zeman’s big brother on General Hospital,” Geary told TVLine late Thursday in an exclusive statement. “In all those years, I never heard her utter one disparaging word about any actor, crew member, or co-worker. In fact, I never heard Jackie express an unkind word about anyone, ever. In a highly competitive profession where ego, feelings, and emotions are bread and butter, I’ve found this quality to be extremely rare. I expect it will be even more rare now that dear Jackie is gone.

“She was quite simply one of the kindest, sweetest people I have ever known,” Geary continued. “I will miss her laugh, and the deep, soulful look in her eyes whenever she expressed the love and pride she had in her two lovely daughters. Tonight, l already miss her, and feel a powerful ache where Jackie’s smile used to be.”

For those of us who were As The World Turns fans - a huge chunk of cast members were at or near 90. We lost Kathryn Hays and Elizabeth Hubbard in the last year, and there's at least a half-dozen more cast members who are at that stage of life.

I will be devastated when Lucci goes. Yeah, yeah, I know all the arguments about her acting, that’s she’s maybe a Republican, she’s anorexic, etc. I don’t care, I can’t help it, I love her.

ATWT mid 80s, early 90s was the only other soap that I almost liked as much as AMC, and I’ve been sad over all those actors we’ve lost in the last couple of years.

Lisa Brown and Jackie Z are particularly sad since they were relatively young.

by Anonymousreply 197May 13, 2023 7:57 PM

If you were to ask me what I miss the most of about the NYC soap scene, it would be the crossover between the shows and Broadway. It was just such a great gig for theater actors, either to keep the lights on between jobs, or something that was easy to do during the day while they were on stage at night.

I wish there was money in reviving it, somehow.

by Anonymousreply 198May 13, 2023 7:58 PM

R198 VOTN, me too.

Unfortunately NYC soaps needed to make some big changes about 20 years ago to survive. They needed to return to 30 minutes (they didn't) and they needed to find a cheaper way to be made, especially with the high cost of raising and storing sets - which unfortunately meant production needed to be somewhere outside of NYC. A shame they didn't find permanent studio space in Connecticut or NJ or somewhere where some NYC theater crossover could still happen.

by Anonymousreply 199May 13, 2023 8:07 PM

[quote]A shame they didn't find permanent studio space in Connecticut or NJ or somewhere where some NYC theater crossover could still happen.

I still think the Prospect Park revivals could have worked...if they'd started with one show and then built out. Trying for two at once, especially when people weren't yet habituated to streaming, they ran out of money too quickly.

I always hated that Agnes Nixon had to see her babies die twice.

by Anonymousreply 201May 13, 2023 8:23 PM

David Canary's end was so sad. He really looked out of it and bewildered during the reboot. And when he did die his family was so tight lipped about it.

Are you sure that wasn’t just him playing Stuart?

by Anonymousreply 204May 13, 2023 8:28 PM

His family wasn't that tight lipped about it. His daughter talked about his dementia at the time of his passing. He was apparently in the earliest stages of it during the AMC reboot.

His daughter did raise the question several years after his death whether football injuries and CTE could have contributed to his cognitive issues.

by Anonymousreply 205May 13, 2023 8:34 PM

David Canary was having problems with the dementia near the end of his run on the show when it was still on ABC. It wasn't obvious until his appearance on the reboot though. It was really sad. He was really beloved by virtually everyone on the show.

They wanted to get as many vets out as possible with the move to LA, thinking many wouldn't want to make the move, but all did except for Canary and Ray McDonnell. Lucci didn't move but decided to commute instead.

by Anonymousreply 213May 13, 2023 9:43 PM

I SENSE that Lucci and Liza's feud was over money. I suspect it was regarding Liza's business and funding for it...

Her business seems to be doing alright...

I think she lives in Boston area.

She was very matter of fact on an instagram post after her father died that she "had been estranged from her parents for a while'"... She was responding to someone sending their condolences..

I suspect that Lucci has a CUNT side- like a massive one. And Helmut was probably a tough cookie as well.

by Anonymousreply 215May 13, 2023 9:55 PM

I seem to recall Liza had a child with special needs....

I suspect you are right about Susan.

by Anonymousreply 216May 13, 2023 10:35 PM

In the 40 or so episodes of AMC 2.0 that Prospect Park produced (before shutting down), David Canary was only in a handful of episodes. And he had very limited dialogue in those episodes.

The final episode he was in, Canary didn't have any dialogue at all. Adam just appeared at the end of the episode to intimidate JR. The threat of Adam arriving was looming throughout the episode, so it was a nice buildup to his arrival. But the episode ended with his arrival at the house, He didn't speak a word. And the next episode, Adam was not there. Nor in the episode after that.

At the time, I remember wondering if Canary had dementia. Why have the actor come to the studio and film that scene but not give him any lines to say? Seemed quite odd. Extremely odd.

So, I was sad to learn he died two years later and had had dementia. But I was not surprised at the dementia was the cause.

R199, I always thought it would have been a smart idea for TPTB of NY soaps to find studio spaces in northern New Jersey (e.g., Jersey City or Hoboken). These cities were thisclose to NYC and I suspect a lot cheaper to do a show. It seems like it would have been a smart business move (for someone who was brave enough to do it) to build a production studio close to NY but much cheaper than NY. The space could be used for TV shows, commercials, music videos, and films.

by Anonymousreply 220May 14, 2023 12:48 AM

R220 And they did try to move in that direction. GL did about 70 percent of its scenes in Peapack, NJ for the last 18 months of the show.

From various things I've read, the biggest cost for most NY soaps was storing the sets and having studio space to raise them. AMC moved to LA because of the same issue in its last 2 years on ABC.

I keep wondering why new shows, or old shows, didn't start moving to other cities.....obviously NYC and LA have their benefits but I'm surprised no one created a soap with production near Chicago. Or any number of other cities.

by Anonymousreply 221May 14, 2023 1:27 AM

R171 Sarah Brown unfortunately became blacklisted after her relationship with her daughter Jordan's father, Shuki Levy, went sour. Besides her stint on ATWT (as Julia), her return to GH (as Claudia), then her roles on B&B (as Agnes) and DOOL (as Madison), she was limited to guest spots in prime-time and small feature film roles because of the power he had over her career. He was also "allegedly" responsible for having her laid off at B&B and fired from DOOL, both distributed through Sony, while also "allegedly" ensuring she was no longer able to work on any projects for Sony. Before that, he had her fired from Cold Case, once he became aware that they were planning to expand her role by making her a permanent cast member. He didn't mind her staying in soaps as long as they weren't under the Sony umbrella, due to his connections there; however he was more interested in preventing her from having a career outside of soaps.

On a side note, Sarah was asked to return as Carly in the spring of 2005, after she left ATWT (who wanted her to stay as well) when Tamara Braun decided to quit. They informed her that it would only be for six months, since Frons/Phelps had already intended for Laura Wright to join in the fall, once her contract with GL was up. This was after they asked Tamara to stay, who refused; Sarah also turned them down, which is why Jill reluctantly cast Jennifer Bransford, knowing that she'd be able to "trade her in" for Laura in the fall.

I love Susan Lucci as well, and for the most part there aren't too many instances of her being a bitch lol except there is the case of her having Sarah Michelle Gellar fired from AMC. It was the day after SMG won the Emmy for Outstanding Younger Actress. Apparently, Lucci was livid, to the point where she demanded that either Sarah goes, or she would. Sarah was handed her walking papers almost immediately afterwards. It was always a "rumored story" and the press tried to spin it, saying "Kendall quits" yet SMG confirmed that Susan Lucci actually had her fired, several years later.

When I moved to NYC to go to drama school in 1981 being a working actor on a soap was like an attainable dream. I lived near the now demolished ABC studio on West 67th Street, and everybody knew somebody who'd gotten a contract role on a soap. Coming off the huge late 70s soap boom saw everyone enjoying some "Love in the afternoon", and I even read for a contract role on Ryan's Hope in '83, or '84. I didn't get it, lol.

It is so strange that there were seven, eight, or even more soaps employing hundreds of actors a day paying their mortgages and putting their kids through school, and a fairly rabid fan base watching them year in and year out, and now completely gone. It seems like a very long time ago...because it was.

by Anonymousreply 227May 14, 2023 4:16 AM

One of the main reasons why the New York soaps never made permanent studio moves to New Jersey or Connecticut is because P&G wanted out of the soap business for good, so they were already planning the cancellations of GL and ATWT, even when there was filming at Peapack. Brian Frons wasn't too keen on OLTL and he wanted to get rid of them as well. His "master plan" was to spare GH and AMC, while driving OLTL into cancellation; as someone stated, the NY soaps were becoming increasingly more expensive to produce, and with Procter & Gamble washing their hands of soaps, that would've left AMC and OLTL.

Frons moved AMC to keep it on the air, and a bonus for him was to have Rebecca Budig back on AMC full-time, for she had relocated to LA after her first stint ended (in November 2005) and after a failed attempt to have her as a Brenda recast on GH, he was finally able to lure her back to AMC in the fall of 2007 (after Greenlee had already been recast with Sabine Singh) and featured those disrespectful "the real Greenlee returns" promos. She aired from Jan. 2008-Feb. 2009, then left again primarily due to being bicoastal, so the move to LA for AMC in the fall/winter of 2009 facilitated her return.

Frons' plan backfired, for OLTL did consistently well in the ratings and demos, besting AMC and sometimes even GH with many commenting how OLTL was ABC's better soap. Frons cancelled both since there wasn't any justification for cancelling OLTL on it's own when AMC was doing worse than them.

A lot of vets from AMC weren't thrilled with having to film in LA. Bobbie Eakes and Jacob Young were happy about returning to the west coast, however the majority of older performers who had homes and families on the east coast were not ok with it, though some did stay on, while commuting back and forth. Susan Lucci was against the move and expressed interest in possibly not staying, for the actors were given options to leave. While there was interest in either Deidre Hall joining AMC as a recast Tara Martin, with Tara positioned as the lead character (which she was originally supposed to be, prior to Erica outshining Tara) or even Genie Francis joining, Lucci ultimately agreed to remain on canvas.

by Anonymousreply 229May 14, 2023 4:43 AM

It would be in their best interest to have the current writers pen Bobbie's memorial instead of scab/temp writers, so if they have to wait until they're no longer striking, then so be it. Temp writers material would start airing around early July.

R207, I remember as a realllly little kid being extremely put off by the Stuart character. I knew both that the entire character was strange, bordering on offensive, and that the acting was bad. I think it’s one of the reasons I never glommed on to AMC.

R231 Lol Stuart started off as the "imaginary friend" named Willy, of Devon McFadden's daughter, Bonnie, so it's funny that as a child you were put off when the point was to make him kid friendly. It's unfortunate what happened to David Canary in his later years, poor guy, may he R.I.P.

by Anonymousreply 235May 14, 2023 1:40 PM

There was a period of time a few years ago when Sarah ranted about her ex on social media extensively and it made her appear unwell. But that's what narcissists and sociopaths do, they make their victims look crazy.

I do recall during those rants she went on about how someone at GH who was "like a mother" to her could have helped her prove what the ex was doing to her career but wouldn't help because her husband did business with her ex. I suspected it was JZ at the time but I believe, I'm not certain as I stopped paying attention after a while, that it turned out it was Genie.

by Anonymousreply 239May 14, 2023 3:46 PM

R235 Yes. He was well known in the industry for having worked on several popular cartoons in the 80's, before his breakout hit "Mighty Morphin Power Rangers" put his production company on the map. He was introduced to Sarah through a mutual friend, one of the female stars of Power Rangers (I think it was Kimberly, The Pink Ranger, played by Amy Jo Johnson). Shuki was married to actress Deborah Skelton (Dallas) and engaged at the same time to Shell Danielson (Dominique, GH) while he pursued Sarah (he was planning to divorce Deborah then marry Shell right after it was finalized, until he met Sarah, who was practically 30 years younger than Shuki). Shuki had alot of connections so that's why it was so easy for him to have her blackballed once she walked away from him (Sarah has accused Shuki of sexual assault, she told the Power Ranger actress what he did, and she told Sarah he did the same to her, too; she warned Sarah that he would retaliate if she ever rejected him- he promised to advance her career, while also having her drunk driving charges handled early on in her career, around the time he cast her on his other show, VR Troopers, due to his connections within the LAPD. Sarah says that she had no idea he was married to Deborah and engaged to Shell until her daughter was almost two years old, when they were in court for a custody agreement. She also says that none of the women knew each other were all involved with him).

Sarah was living in an apartment that Shuki owned, and he also lived there with her (she paid him $900 a month) while she was on GH. When she broke it off with him, she had friends over to celebrate her breaking it off. Shortly after, the apartment was set on fire; when arson investigators asked her if she knew of anyone who was possibly trying to kill her, she named Shuki Levy. However, Shuki was never charged. Prior to that, Sarah was also pregnant by Shuki, before she was on GH, in 1995; Shuki had Sarah go film a movie, with action scenes, to make sure that she miscarried. He also had another 19 year old pregnant at the same time as Sarah, while still with his wife and Shell. He also tried to kill his wife by putting a gun to her head, threatening her. He also spit in Sarah's face, while she was holding their daughter, and told her, "I'm going to take away everything you love, one by one." Sarah also discovered that he was recording her phone conversations and had surveillance all over his house to watch her every move. He did the same thing to her own house that she shared with their daughter, he had secret surveillance set up in her home, for his good friends and family members had access to her home when she wasn't there, for the sake of their daughter.

Long story short, Shuki and his business partner, Haim Saban, are well connected throughout the entertainment industry, with connections also running through law enforcement and politics. Sarah was also present upon Shuki and Haim receiving a corrupt deal with the SAG Union, she didn't hear the terms of the deal herself, however Shuki later informed her of the deal.

She also says that he attempted to kidnap their daughter and that he had a history of being with younger women, who had similar stories of being sexually assaulted by him, roofied and raped. He had a younger girlfriend named Tori Avey (who was 21 when Sarah was 30) that he eventually married; Tori was with Shuki during the kidnapping attempt. Sarah was gaslighted by him, and since he's so well connected, he made life difficult for her at every turn.

by Anonymousreply 240May 14, 2023 5:05 PM

R236 Also, she accused Vanessa Marcil of no longer supporting her as well. She was close with Vanessa during their time on GH together, and years afterwards, until Vanessa, according to Sarah, began to distance herself from Sarah while also remaining quiet in regards to everything Sarah told her about Shuki. Vanessa was, most likely, trying to save herself from being blacklisted. Sarah was accused of being psychotic and out of her mind after all of her rants, what made it worse was that she was having difficulty in terms of corroborating her stories since everyone she confided in wouldn't publicly speak out against him.

by Anonymousreply 241May 14, 2023 5:13 PM

Sarah Brown is a terrific actress. I hope she lands a prime time show one day.

by Anonymousreply 242May 14, 2023 5:46 PM

If all of that really happened to Sarah, it's horrendous and that guy should be prosecuted. That being said, I could also see why coworkers might have thought she was losing it because the story is so over the top and they didn't want to encourage or enable delusional thinking. Tricky situation. for sure. Even if only half of it happened, Shuki still sounds like a scum pig and I hope he gets his comeuppance.

by Anonymousreply 245May 14, 2023 6:22 PM

I agree r244, she's not Laura. It dawned on me a few years ago that none of her co-stars have ever raved about her. They always say what an icon she is and what a good actress she is but no one ever says what a great or even nice person she is. Except for JPS who raves about her and her husband because they always bought him dinner when he just starting out and broke and both he and Genie were on AMC.

A beautiful smile does not equate to beautiful person.

by Anonymousreply 246May 14, 2023 6:29 PM

Genie’s a bitch. Nuff said.

by Anonymousreply 247May 14, 2023 7:58 PM

R245 $900 was what Shuki charged her for rent, since he owned the property (possibly co-owned it with a partner, however she paid the rent to him), so it was possibly a discounted rate. He also lived with her at the apartment, when he wasn't with his wife Deborah or his fiancee Shell. He also proposed to Sarah and she accepted, not knowing of his other relationships, or the other girl who was pregnant at the same time of her first pregnancy. Sarah also believes he set the fire not only to kill her, since she was home with a few friends staying over when the fire occurred, she also thought that it was a way for him to let his friend/business partner Raphael move into the apartment at a reduced rate, since it was damaged by the fire.

by Anonymousreply 248May 14, 2023 10:55 PM

*She had a few friends over the night before, that was the night of her celebrating the end of her relationship with Shuki. The friends were the Power Rangers actress, her boyfriend, and Sarah best friend from high school. The best friend stayed overnight, and the fire happened when they were both there the following morning.

R265 - One of my favorite GH lines ever:

Stefan, about Helena: Mother imagines the whole world conspires against her. Would that it were so.

LOL. Nichols had pitch perfect drollery delivering that line. I loved the early years of Stefan and Helena and the return of the Cassadines. I always thought Stefan and Bobbie's brief marriage had so much untouched potential. I think they rushed through it so they reunite him with former co-star Mary Beth Evans who played the mostly insipid Katherine "KatSplat" Bell.

by Anonymousreply 267May 15, 2023 11:47 AM

The Cassadine story and the creation of Nicholas is, perhaps, one of the best stories GH has ever done. It just made so much sense and was told so brilliantly. It's kind of shame they couldn't sustain it.

by Anonymousreply 268May 15, 2023 12:39 PM

It was some of the best work Genie did.

by Anonymousreply 269May 15, 2023 4:12 PM

R270 Apparently so, he had a way with women that were possibly somewhat dickmatized and had a lot of well connected male friends, so straight men then and even now would look up to him. Sarah even said that Shuki had a private meeting in his library with her, his friend/business partner Haim Saban and President Bill Clinton. While she was speaking to Saban and Clinton, Shuki reached behind her and began fingering her rectum. Since they were both facing her, she didn't think they noticed at the time, however years after the fact, she wondered if they knew and if it was done on purpose, to humiliate her. This occurred after the Lewinsky incident; Clinton was there to raise money for then Vice President Al Gore's presidential campaign.

by Anonymousreply 270May 16, 2023 3:54 AM

Although I didn't watch GH, I knew of Jackie and how integral General Hospital was to the success of soaps and their continuing influence.

It's sad that she is gone because it's another loss to the soap world. There are only 4 soaps left. Thinking back to the '90s there were like 12 of them.

by Anonymousreply 271May 16, 2023 5:14 AM

Exactly 12 In the early, early 90's, four on each network (CBS- Y&R, B&B, ATWT, GL), (NBC- Generations, DOOL, AW, Santa Barbara), (ABC- Loving, AMC, OLTL, GH) until NBC cancelled Generations, then Santa Barbara. ABC at least revamped Loving into The City, then replaced them with Port Charles. NBC spent five years (off and on) trying to find a replacement for Santa Barbara, ultimately landing on Sunset Beach, then Passions replaced AW, and Sunset Beach concluded on Dec. 31st, 1999. So we actually had 16 different soaps throughout the 90's, which is crazy to think now with only four, and one isn't even on network television.

by Anonymousreply 272May 16, 2023 9:49 AM

[quote] I always thought Stefan and Bobbie's brief marriage had so much untouched potential. I think they rushed through it so they reunite him with former co-star Mary Beth Evans who played the mostly insipid Katherine "KatSplat" Bell.

I agree, although it did spawn another of my favorite memories of Jackie. Once she’d been betrayed by Stefan and had reconciled with Luke, who was trying to bring down whatever scheme he was cooking up, she reveals herself by saying “[Luke] wants to see you burn in Hell, and i want to light the match.”

Even for someone who appeared so late in the show’s run, Constance Towers’ Helena may be the show’s greatest villain.

[quote] So we actually had 16 different soaps throughout the 90's, which is crazy to think now with only four, and one isn't even on network television.

If there is any upside, it’s the serialized storytelling has been co-opted by primetime dramas. Even shows like Law & Order, which used to be completely strict procedural, have continuing elements now.

It doesn’t replace the almost familial vibes of watching the same characters five days a week, but it’s something.

I should dig up the clip of Viki talking about why people loved soaps from the final episode of OLTL.

by Anonymousreply 273May 16, 2023 11:46 AM

R246. A lot of the younger actors including NAC, Avery Pohl and Eden McCoy talk about how helpful and kind Genie is and how invested she is with the younger set. Becky Herbst still talks about how close she is with Genie and how she was a major influence on her when she started.

This thread sent me down a rabbit hole, watching old storyline I'd never seen. The frequency with which people die and return is astonishing. In fact, when someone dies on the show now, the natural reaction should be extreme skepticism.

The worst thing I saw in the past few days was what they did to poor Rick Webber. Dying in the attic at the hands of Laura? N word please! Made no damn sense.

by Anonymousreply 291May 17, 2023 7:10 PM

During the 50th anniversary in 2013, somewhere it was reported that Ron C wanted to correct both the Rick Webber and Alan Q deaths.

That story said Ron was waiting for Stuart Damon's health to improve before beginning it.

by Anonymousreply 292May 17, 2023 7:43 PM

[quote] I expect that that storyline will be picked up for the series finale if the show is canceled.

That's what AMC did in its final months. Correct all the mistakes that had occurred under previous regimes, especially the deaths like Dixie and Stuart.

by Anonymousreply 296May 17, 2023 8:05 PM

I always thought Dr. David bringing people back from the dead seemed more of a GH thing and not really AMC's style, although I can see why they did it and think overall the writing was a bit better the last year than it had been in a while. I would have been ok with both Dixie and Stuart staying dead however.

by Anonymousreply 297May 17, 2023 8:54 PM

I still wonder why GH hasn't brought David Hayward to Port Charles.

He could be doing all sorts of mad scientist things. Plus, he's got the connection to Anna.

[quote][R273] for you, VOTN, and for all of us who ever loved their "stories."

More than ten years on, and it still makes me cry. As much shit as you can deservedly talk about Ron, he sincerely loves the genre.

I've said this a bunch, but I've always thought that OLTL was the closest to an official soap that DL ever had. But GH was the first one I ever connected with, way back when Felicia showed up back on Bobbie and Tony's doorstep with amnesia in 1991 or 92. And even though I haven't watched more than piecemeal since the 50th, but I know when the time comes to dim the lights on the hospital, I'm going to be a wreck.

When they do get to memorialize Bobbie and Jackie, I'll be there as it's airing live.

by Anonymousreply 299May 17, 2023 9:25 PM

R299, I'm a bit older than you so I'm lucky in that I got to see an earlier Golden Age of GH.

It wasn't just Luke and Laura that made the show No. 1. In fact, the show had gone from No. 9 or 10 or 11 to No. 2 before Luke came on. One of the big storylines was that slut Monica thinking initially that Rick was the father of AJ; Rick divorced Lesley so he could be with his son (and Monica).

Then, Alan found out that AJ WAS his and in classic soap style, the truth came out at a big gala fundraiser at the Q manse.

The showdown between Lesley and Monica is what soaps are all about. Two women in love with the same man. One feared she wasn't enough for him in the bedroom; the other had that covered -- but that's all she had.

THIS was GH's Golden Age.

[quote] The most resolution we got (and probably ever will get) was seeing Ghost Rick at the Qs with thankfully no mention of that final storyline

Actually it was referenced. Tracy made some snarky comment, and Rick said that the circumstances leading to his death were terribly misunderstood and untrue. It was quick, but covered. The ghosts of Alan and Rick showed up to haunt and taunt Tracy and Monica who had just consumed a jar full of tainted Picklelila.

I agree with R300 in that it wasn't just Luke and Laura that was the key to GH's popularity. The show had a few good storylines going at the same time. My favorite -- more favorite than L&L -- was Heather's story. I loved when she was trying to drive Diana crazy so that she (Heather) could get her baby back. Then when Heather was in the sanitarium, she disguised herself as one of the nurses to get out from time to time. That was back in the day when a soap would have several strong storylines working at the same time.

I watched Genie Francis' interview here. She doesn't seem like a bitch. She seems down to earth and cool. She opens up about leaving GH the first time, and her confronting Gloria Monty about saying Luke was more important and she didn't care if Genie died (!)

Also, she talks about how wonderful Jonathan Jackson is. And how Tyler Christopher wasn't very good when he first started, but got better. She said she told Jackson to leave in 1998. But she said that Tyler Christopher left too soon- he still had more to learn. She's very honest about the recasts of Lucky and Nicholas.

I like her after watching this. I get the sense that she's a nice person, but it's possible that she's simply not very warm to strangers who approach her.

Genie has a dysfunctional relationship with GH. It made her famous but she lost her adolescence and she ended up addicted to drugs during her first run.

I think Luke’s rape of Laura being reclassified as a “seduction” really bothered her. I remember reading an interview with her where she discussed how proud she was of her work as a rape victim, and how unhappy she was when this was scrapped in favor of the Luke/Laura romance. Women were yelling “Rape Me Luke! Rape Me!”at Tony and Genie’s fan appearances.

She spent 10 years after leaving the show trying to put Laura behind her, never quite capturing that magic. She found professional happiness in New York on All My Children, and was dragged back kicking and screaming to GH.

Then that asshole Jill Phelps canned her and destroyed the character of Rick Webber to do so.

Any bitterness she has seems understandable. She can’t get away from GH, but GH has often treated her poorly.

Gloria Monty really hated women, didn’t she. She seemed to have a bad relationship with many of the actresses on GH.

Genie is a stone-cold cunt. Extremely judgmental but her personal life was a shambles until well into menopause. Riker had her so that she didn't know whether she was coming or going half the time--that is, when she wasn't drunk.

by Anonymousreply 315May 19, 2023 11:03 AM

R314 - What, again?! Scotty is the longest-running character still active on GH, first appearing in 1965 -- just two years after the show's debut. People talk about GH doing Laura dirty, but Scott has been trashed since the rape story. I always thought it was bizarre how everyone -- including his own God damn adoptive father Lee -- thought Scotty was a jerk for being angry that Luke raped his wife and stole her away. WTF?! He's also buried, now, as many children (three) as the second longest-running character, Monica.

by Anonymousreply 316May 19, 2023 11:57 AM

Scotty Baldwin's the longest running character in all of US soap history. He'll be certainly be back on the show, at least for the Bobbie tribute storyline

Genie seemed to have issues with all the female EPs. Monty, Riche, and JFP. Genie's beef, legitimate or not, was that she felt that she one half of soap's most popular couple of all time, but wasn't treated in a co-equal way as Tony. I don't know if Tony had a better agent in negotiations or those EPs just favored him, but I think Genie couldn't get past that. I wonder what really went down between Tony and Genie, most people assume it was the no kissing thing, but it had to me more than that. But it seemed pretty obvious that neither one wanted to play Luke and Laura as a couple.

by Anonymousreply 319May 19, 2023 5:58 PM

R317 - I wasn't sure enough to make that claim. Guiding Light ran for 72 fucking years (TV and radio)! I never watched it, but thought some character on there might have had a longer run.

by Anonymousreply 320May 19, 2023 9:32 PM

R320, Charita Bauer who played Bert Bauer (the same surname was a coincidence) played Bert on radio and TV in the 1950s and last aired in late 1984 so that's 40 years but if the character of Scotty goes back to the mid 60s that puts him in the 60s, 70s, 80s, 90s, 2000s, 2010s, and 2020s

Actually, Julie on DAYS goes back to the 1960s; she was in the first episode, the character was. So she's had a very long run. It'd be nice to have Kin and Susan Hayes present at the DT Emmys.

by Anonymousreply 321May 19, 2023 11:23 PM

Genie was mum on Stephen Martines and lukewarm on Jacob Young in that interview. She must have so many stories to tell.

by Anonymousreply 322May 19, 2023 11:39 PM

So according to that interview Genie thought that the situation was that Laura wasn't really raped but rather cried rape because she couldn't handle her guilty feelings about it.

by Anonymousreply 323May 20, 2023 12:26 AM

R233 I think that’s the way they led the audience. And the fact thar Laura wouldn’t say who raped her for a while, if I remember correctly. I watched the whole thing as young teen and that was the impression that I had through it. Laura was definitely into Luke before the rape but didn’t want to be because she loved Scotty. It was very complicated, at least to my young mind.

by Anonymousreply 324May 20, 2023 12:47 AM

R323 yes, that really surprised me. That is not the case when you see the actual event.

by Anonymousreply 325May 20, 2023 12:48 AM

by Anonymousreply 328May 20, 2023 12:20 PM

[quote]Didn't Genie say a few months ago it was rape, no means no. Is this a Whoopi thing where we ask, but was it rape rape??

I believe that Genie's opinions about the rape have evolved as society's views on rape have evolved. A lot of current fans have forgotten how fast & loose soaps and pretty much all entertainment forms played with rape. Rape was a big bad stranger drags a woman into an alley or forces his way into her house and rapes her and leaves her bloodied and beaten.

I think up until Chris Foster was raped on Y&R in either 73 or 74, it was all bodice ripping/Rhett carrying Scarlett up the stairs/you're not going to deny me types of situations. I think John Dixon raping Kim was the first instance of marital rape on a soap. But now society takes a harder line at what is rape.

by Anonymousreply 329May 20, 2023 12:36 PM

Laura's grand nephew Michael was raped while in prison. Laura recommending he go on the run with Carter was so inappropriate.

by Anonymousreply 330May 20, 2023 12:40 PM

What soap had the most rapes? AMC sure had its share…Erica, Brooke, Natalie, Gloria, Julia, Bianca…and probably more that I’m forgetting. AMC was “my” soap, but I admit they went to the rape storyline well too many times.

by Anonymousreply 331May 20, 2023 12:47 PM

Yep. The screenwriter of Hitchcock's Marnie expressed that that's how she felt about it, and it wasn't even an old interview. It was a retrospective decades later. She said something like, "I didn't view it as rape. Rape is when you're walking through the park and some stranger drags you into the bushes." Her predecessor had been fired because he was reluctant to write the marital rape scene with Connery and Hedren, and tried to suggest an alternative.

In roughly the same era as L&L, John Ross on Dallas was a product of rape (JR/Sue Ellen), although I don't think Sue Ellen or anyone else called it that. Ugly scene, anyway.

by Anonymousreply 332May 20, 2023 1:34 PM

The Bianca rape was particularly offensive, because it was purely done for shock value. Let's for Bianca to be with a man. Plus it was one of many stories they did after a great coming out story to avoid actually putting her in a same sex relationship. Bianca raped - Bianca is pregnant which led into a year of baby switch -- Bianca kisses a pre-transitioned Zarf etc. Not to mention the writers decided to keep mentioning the Kane rape legacy. Plus, Adam and Palmer were aging, Michael Cambias could have been a long term character to shake things up instead of making him an unredeemable character to kill off.

Julia was already going through so much - face scar -- running away -- not sure why they needed to throw in a rape as well as a pregnancy. That might have been one of the last abortions that I saw on a soap.

Gloria's rape was such a blatant rape used to punish and reform the bad girl. Her character did an instant 180 degree turn. Julia's rape had a touch of that as well. She became the long-suffering St. Julia.

Natalie's rape was a pretty well thought and planned story and she had already softened, so it did not seem as blatant as the Gloria reformed by rape, although it was probably the start of the town viewing her as St. Natalie. It is too bad they went as far as they did changing her from being an instigator to being someone's victim (Palmer, Erica, Janet, Carter, Jeremy's Ex). Collins still made her interesting, but the character, but they really turned her into a Perils of Pauline.

I remember thinking how it was great that they never felt they needed to go there with Erica - until they did. At least that brought in the great SMG storyline, and it did help explain why Erica was so messed and they did not reform her with it. I do think they went to far going on about the Kane rape legacy after Bianca was raped and then later when it was revealed Eric knew and pimped her out. The original storyline with him saying she must have asked for it could still be reconciled with her blaming herself but still wanting his love. Her hero worship of him did not mesh with her knowing he set her up to be raped.

by Anonymousreply 333May 20, 2023 1:47 PM

One last comment - as great as the Who Killed Will story was - making him an irredeemable rapist who needed to be written off was probably a long-term mistake. Like Michael Cambias, he could have been a long-term character to take over for an aging Palmer feuding with Adam.

by Anonymousreply 334May 20, 2023 1:50 PM

If I recall correctly, JPS pretty much admitted his fame as Will Cortlandt went to his head and he was quite the asshole which may have contributed to his being written out.

Wasn't James DePaiva also an asshole on OLTL? Has he reformed? I thought it odd his character on GH a few years back had so much potential then they suddenly turned him into a creep and off he went. Made me wonder if he was still difficult.

Am I missing something? He sure made Gloria Monty’s granny panties wet.

by Anonymousreply 357May 20, 2023 7:38 PM

[quote] I have never understood the appeal of Tony Geary. How was he ever a sex symbol?

I don't disagree. I think it was the whole 70s vibe, lots of unusual looking guys in the late 70s were considered "cute."

And Luke/Laura was kind of like.....well, maybe "Twilight" is a somewhat decent parallel. There it's "vampire falls in love, gives up everything for her" or that sort of nonsense. I think setting the rape aside, it was an old fashion, almost 40s-esque "love of a good woman" storyline.

by Anonymousreply 359May 20, 2023 7:58 PM

anyone who watched GH in the 70-80s or until GF left in the early 2000s would see that Luke loved Laura with all his heart(even obsessed with her) until fucking AG started speaking shit about L&L every chance he could

by Anonymousreply 360May 20, 2023 8:01 PM

I think both Tony and Genie just started to hate L&L. Something went sour with them in the late 90s. If the rumors are to be believed Genie became much more conservative and did not want to kiss Geary, a gay man.

Once Guza was at the helm, Lady Geary had a friendly ear for her let's-make-Luke-an-antihero-again campaign. (Just what Port Charles needed....TWO amoral mobsters running everything in town.)

by Anonymousreply 361May 20, 2023 8:10 PM

Both Tony and Genie had to go from characters/experiences they liked or were invested in (Bill Eckert, Ceara Connor) back to the safe, familiar and already more than a little typecasting. Add in Genie's resentment about past disrespect from TPTB and alleged conservatism (something I hope is only a rumor, but I could see it happening as an offshoot of trying to put distance between her and the bad old days) and it's no wonder that the meltdown happened.

by Anonymousreply 362May 20, 2023 8:35 PM

Fast-forwarding past Gloria Monty's GH for a moment, I want to mention a tidbit I saw in TV Guide circa 2000. Ann Marcus' autobiography supposedly had dish about her working with an actress who was on GH in '88 and ended up going to rehab. The actress was still around in '00. I'm wondering if it was Kristina Wagner, who was off the show for a few months in late '88-early '89.

by Anonymousreply 363May 20, 2023 8:38 PM

Tony Geary can rape me, anytime.

by Anonymousreply 364May 20, 2023 8:51 PM

Ann Marcus discussing GH. Doesn’t mention an actress but she does mention Gloria Monty and her sister Norma, who was foisted on every headwriter post-Marland.

Ann Marcus is underrated I think. I think she would have done a fabulous job on Santa Barbara. She wrote Mary Hartman, Days of our Lives (jn the 70s) and Falcon Crest, so she had the correct sensibility.

First thing: Soaps in the 60s and 70s had, "interesting" looking leading men. They weren't ugly, but they hadn't just stepped off a runway either. Soaps didn't go for models with model good looks until the late 80s/90s with John Conboy was an exception, both Love is A Many Splendored Thing and Y&R hired very handsome actors.

Second thing: Don't know what happened between Tony and Genie - other than Genie's no kissing rule, but Tony always seemed to fall back on Doug Marland. In one interview he said that Doug Marland created a scum bag and he always played Luke as a scum bag, regardless of how the audience perceived it. 🤷‍♂️

When L&L were at their height, I was still too young to be really into soaps, but I did get hooked on Guiding Light for a summer, during the Kelly/Nola stuff, until I was turned on to AMC in 1982 and became obsessed with that show.

I did watch GH some, but I think Laura was on the way out when I started-I remember Bobbie and Noah, and then fake Laura (Janine Turner) and her sister, Demi Moore. I guess that was around 1982 as well?

by Anonymousreply 374May 21, 2023 3:39 AM

I remember seeing the L&L stuff because my sister watched. But I was also watching Kelly Nelson's straining Speedo on GL.

And then once pendulous Phillip Spaulding came on the scene I was hooked.

by Anonymousreply 375May 21, 2023 3:48 AM

Revisiting the D.L. Brock story, it's interesting that he keeps insisting that Bobbie and Rick are all-but having an affair. It makes you wonder why GH didn't go that route, other than I guess they figured they needed to redeem Ginny (so she got Rick) and Jake was available (for Bobbie).

by Anonymousreply 376May 21, 2023 3:58 AM

R375, in what scene did Phillip have a hard on? Was he with Mindy?

[QUOTE] In one interview he said that Doug Marland created a scum bag and he always played Luke as a scum bag, regardless of how the audience perceived it.

I believe that. He forced his 14 year old sister into prostitution, corrupted Lucky, hired a hooker to be Nu-Laura, tried to kill Nikolas (Laura's rape-son) and worst of... when he ran over his grandson Jake while drunk driving, his excuse for not stopping was saying he thought it was a speed bump. That line turned my stomach. Luke always made my skin crawl, and his appearance didn't help matters.

R377 Yes, it was a scene where Grant/Phillip had on those short gym shorts we all had in 7th grade, and he and Krista (as Mindy) were working out.

The cameraman must have thought the red shorts hid the bulge but from a side angle he was so obscenely hard it was almost comic. Thank goodness for VCRs is all I can say.

Has Rachel Ames or Brooke Bundy issued a statement?

by Anonymousreply 383May 21, 2023 5:05 PM

Wasn't the original plan (post-rape) to kill-off Luke?? He was supposed to be the one killed in the assassination attempt on Mitch Williams, not Roy DeLuca. But then, Asher Brauner was cast in some ABC pilot (that the suits were really high on), so it was switched -- Roy "died" & Luke stayed.

by Anonymousreply 384May 21, 2023 5:37 PM

R384 Yes, you are correct. Luke became too popular to kill off.

by Anonymousreply 385May 21, 2023 6:02 PM

It's pretty ironic that in the late 70s, Emily McLaughlin/Jessie Brewer went from lead heroine to a glorified under-five in order to spotlight Zeman/Bobbie and the other young characters. Twenty-odd years later, the exact same thing would happen to Zeman.

by Anonymousreply 386May 21, 2023 6:29 PM

Zeman looks so much like Piper Laurie in that pic from r382, as if she walked off the set of Carrie as a younger Margaret White.

by Anonymousreply 387May 21, 2023 6:32 PM

It’s hard to imagine Emily McLaughlin as the lead heroine of a romantic drama. She was always plain and looked like she smoked 4 packs a day. But she landed Jeffrey Hunter in real life so she must have had a magic tongue or something.

Well, since this is sort of a thread about aging soap stars, Brynn Thayer (Jenny, OLTL) is on the latest episode of the Fatal Attraction series. I didn’t recognize her at first. Dee Wallace is also on the episode and although they are the same age, Thayer looks much older. Not bad, though.

by Anonymousreply 389May 21, 2023 7:25 PM

Brynn went to my high school!

So great in a brief but memorable guest appearance on Moonlighting.

by Anonymousreply 390May 21, 2023 7:55 PM

I just saw that episode of Fatal Attraction also. I thought it was her, but not sure until I saw her name in the credits. But I'm not sure if she looks like that in real life or if she's done up for her character.

by Anonymousreply 391May 21, 2023 7:57 PM

Brynn? She had a low Q rating.

by Anonymousreply 392May 21, 2023 7:57 PM

Brynn Thayer was the first but not the last woman to fuck Judith Light.

by Anonymousreply 393May 21, 2023 8:03 PM

I don't like the turn this thread has taken. Not atall!

by Anonymousreply 394May 21, 2023 8:06 PM

Jacklyn Zeman had so many great years on the show .However they didn't give her a more prominent story after she got past 50 or so. Carly basically took over and left her in the dust. So much untapped potential. What happened to her in the intervening years? The actress never complained because she was a Class Act but retrospectively those writers should be ashamed of themselves for squandering her potential because of age or whatever the reason was.

by Anonymousreply 395May 21, 2023 8:26 PM

R384, exactly, you're correct; Aaron Spelling's one series that never took off (okay one of a few) BAD CATS with Michelle Pfeiffer

Asher played a hookup of Michael Ontkean's character in Making Love.

HIs scene was with Kate Jackson; she asked him if he was happy and he said he gets mad over parking tickets and other shit but yeah, he's happy. That was one of the best parts of the movie.

by Anonymousreply 396May 21, 2023 8:45 PM

She had such pretty, expressive eyes.

by Anonymousreply 397May 21, 2023 9:01 PM

I think certainly Zeman's plastic surgery had a role in her reduced appearances.

Not being mean....but like Hunter Tylo, some of JZ's procedures did her no favors.

by Anonymousreply 398May 21, 2023 9:29 PM

Was Jackie part of the Jane/Dee/Lezlie clip cat club?

by Anonymousreply 399May 21, 2023 9:31 PM

Didn't JFP marginalize her? I think that before her surgeries.

When was the photo from the article at R403 taken? Jackie looks good there, like she'd let thing settle down between procedures.

by Anonymousreply 406May 22, 2023 1:37 AM

Maybe they could have made Bobbie's character similar to Donna Love from Another World, so that she could have stayed on the canvas. Bobbie could have been Carly's flawed conscience and talk to and someone who was trying to cover up Carly's messes like Donna Love was to Vicky.

by Anonymousreply 407May 22, 2023 1:40 AM

I get the feeling that Zeman wasn't as fond of Laura Wright as much as the other ladies who played Carly by the way she answered the question.

I don't know where that picture of her came from.

by Anonymousreply 408May 22, 2023 1:47 AM

Doug Sheehan was hot.

by Anonymousreply 409May 22, 2023 3:46 AM

r406 r403,

You're right about the good photo.

It's a good interview. It covered a lot. From Doug Marland to more recent times. And the shoutout to her fans at the end is nice.

The show didn't always put her in the front-burner but the press seemed to really love her. I do give Frank HUGE credit for bringing her back 10 years ago. It seemed like every show Jill went to, she got rid of beloved faves GL's Alexandra and Maureen; Frankie and Sharlene at AW; Dorian at OLTL; at GH, she got rid of Bobbie...others.

Today, GH has Robert, Holly, Laura, Anna, Scotty, etc. Even with Leslie Charleson not coming to work, Frank still had her call in for a key episode.

by Anonymousreply 410May 22, 2023 4:31 AM

Poor Jackie cooked her own goose by having those awful facelifts and boobie jobs. Even people who are now mourning her made fun of her looks back in the day. Queen Logan - we mean you.

She was well enough to lend her voice during Epiphany’s memorial, R345. Monica called Liz and told her Epiphany wanted her as Head Nurse.

by Anonymousreply 421May 23, 2023 12:18 AM

Frank only called JZ back when Carly needed even more propping, R410. They’ve downplayed/whitewashed so much of Bobbie/Carly’s origins to make Carly some upstanding matriarch on the show especially recently.

by Anonymousreply 422May 23, 2023 12:27 AM

R422 it could have been more but Frank valued more than Jill did.

by Anonymousreply 423May 23, 2023 1:35 AM

by Anonymousreply 424May 23, 2023 1:38 AM

I'm going to assume that it was one of the situations where JFP had to free up money and JZ had been around awhile and was making the kind of money were her salary could pay for a few newbies and bump a more popular character up in salary.

by Anonymousreply 429May 23, 2023 2:05 AM

Frank IS hot.

I bet he's hung.

by Anonymousreply 430May 23, 2023 3:53 AM

R427, Jill's IMDB has her being in the music department in 1983-84; that's 3 to 4 years before Rise was played at the Campus Disco.

Jill ALWAYS has a budget issue. She had a budget issue when she killed off Maureen to bring on scenery-eating Buzz Cooper on GL; she had budget issues when she got rid of Frankie Frame and probably Sharlene; she had budget issues when she got rid of Strasser.

Other producers have budget issues and they don't make these kinds of casting decisions.

by Anonymousreply 431May 23, 2023 4:20 AM

Tony Geary has said repeatedly that he is the one who suggested using “Rise.”

by Anonymousreply 432May 23, 2023 4:41 AM

I guess back then we were supposed to feel for Luke and his crazy desire to have Laura; he thought he was going to die so that, he felt, justified him taking her and raping her.

if she'd turned him into the cops, Scotty or Frank Smith would have killed him.

When Luke started to suspect that Laura had feelings for her, he fucked with her head; there was a packed house at the Campus Disco one night and Luke plays RISE and says right on front of Laura, who's dancing with Scotty, DANCE WITH ME! and then walks over to dance with Jennifer.

Asshole.

by Anonymousreply 433May 23, 2023 5:12 AM

[QUOTE] If Frank's casting couch could speak?

It would say Thank God for scotchgard!

by Anonymousreply 434May 23, 2023 11:42 AM

The seminal problem between Geary and Francis was a twisted mirror of their fictional couple’s initial woes. They were friends who became sexually then romantically involved, to their great shock, as Geary had never had feelings like that for a woman and on Francis’s side Geary took her virginity and was her first adult relationship. They ended up having a child, whom Genie gave up and Tony didn’t know existed. The bitterness about that secret prevented them from ever being reunited onscreen.

by Anonymousreply 435May 23, 2023 12:58 PM

I'm glad I started watching GH in the late 1970s through its glory years. I stopped in the early 1990s after graduating from college and starting work. I lost touch with all my soaps. A couple years later, I got the flu and was home sick for a week. I revisited my old soaps and found I couldn't stand them anymore. But GH back in the day was great with lots of good storylines.

I started watching before Luke and Laura took off. Alan was plotting to kill Monica and Rick. Heather was in an asylum. Bobbie was trying to get Scotty. Luke fell in love with Laura. Then the Luke and Laura thing exploded. Everyone at my junior high school watched the show. We'd talk about it the next day.

RIP Jackie. You were great as Nurse Bobbie.

by Anonymousreply 437May 23, 2023 1:40 PM

R393, care to elaborate?

by Anonymousreply 438May 23, 2023 2:36 PM

Dear poster upthread who said Jill selected "Rise" - you had the right idea but wrong song. It was Jill who suggested the use of "Think of Laura" for Genie's brief return as Laura, and reunion with Tony Geary/Luke.

That was a genius move, as it was teased through story/episodes as well as commercials for weeks and resulted in blockbuster ratings for the show.

by Anonymousreply 439May 23, 2023 2:55 PM

It would really be something to think about big dick Frankie nailing some of those hot twinks and furry jocks on his casting couch.

I'd pay good money to see him pounding a newly 18 year old Triscuit and breeding him. But I'd also watch him loading up Swicky too, especially if Swicky's stroke buddy Michael Mealor is the third.....

by Anonymousreply 440May 23, 2023 2:56 PM

R435 hilarious fan fiction, but no. Tony has always been strictly dickly, despite claims of a "romance" between Lady Geary and Liz Taylor.

He was dating a producer early on in his career - I think that's how he landed his role on All In The Family - and for a long stretch was paired with Ron Glass of Barney Miller fame.

I never cared for or watched GH much but I have to say I'm impressed with the Sarah Brown Carly clips, and even - hard for me to believe - some of those Kelly Monaco clips around the time Sam learned Alexis was her mother.

Kelly M was interesting in those scenes.....perhaps for the one and only time I can recall.

Kelly was HORRIBLE in that story R456. It was comical watching her try to keep up with NLG. Those weird tics of hers - the whispering, the random yelling, the hands in the back pocket, the run on line delivery. So bad.

That story was so incredibly stupid.

R301 - thanks so much for posting that clip of the opening number of the 1988 Emmy Awards!

There’s another musical opening from an Emmy telecast in the 1980s that I’ve been unable to find. Back then the networks took turns airing the Emmys. One year it was aired on CBS and began at 3 (East Coast) — preempting Guiding Light. The opening number was a song with the refrain, “How will I know?” — the lyrics were about missing that day’s episode of Guiding Light.

Does anyone remember that? It’s been so long it is almost like a fever dream.

Thanks!

R460, 3 1/2 pages are social media posts about Jackie. And they include folks like Kate Linder and others who didn't know her all that well from what I can tell.

How about picking up the phone and calling Brad Maule and getting his thoughts on Jackie. There were other actors who played her love interests or husbands that aren't included; a magazine is always going to be late with something like this so make it special. Rachel has to be one of the most underrated actress in soaps.

There were the big stars -- Lucci, Hall, Fulton, Slezak, Zimmer, Strasser, Thomas Scott, Flannery.

But there were so many strong, powerful women in soaps who never sought the limelight or were put up on pedestals. But they turned in solid work for decades that kept us riveted.

"Nobody ever stays dead in Port Charles."

by Anonymousreply 498June 22, 2023 10:09 PM

R491, she received early nods and then again the first year in Supporting.

She took home a Lifetime Achievement Award when they gave out about 10 to actors including Ray McDonald, Jeanne Cooper, Eileen Fulton, Frances Reid, John Clarke, Don Hastings, Helen Wagner, Ruth Warrick, and posthumously to Anna Lee.

A classy broad; Marland used her quite a bit when he joined; he kept Steve, Audrey, and Jessie quite a bit.

I was NOT a fan of the Labine era of GH. (I know this is sacrilege.) But she had intended on giving Audrey Alzheimer's. Had anyone tried to do that to Maeve Ryan, Labine would have stormed ABC with a machete -- rightfully so.

by Anonymousreply 499June 23, 2023 10:25 PM

I remember Audrey, Steve, and Jesse were basically extras when I watched from 1983 to 1988. Recently on YouTube, I saw they gave Audrey some meaty scenes circa 1998- taking about her own rape in regards to Elizabeth.

There was also a black couple who just hung around- NEVER had any stories. Brian and Claudia. And the Hardy's son never did much either.

by Anonymousreply 500June 23, 2023 10:29 PM

About nine years ago, maybe ten, the GH fan club did a 'past cast' reunion fan event.

A TON of past cast members came and signed autographs and did a QA for hours; Rachel, Peter Hansen and Susan Brown came and were given special seating and stayed for a short period of time. They were there long enough to get, I recall, a standing ovation. They felt all the love that day.

There's no fan like a soap fan.

by Anonymousreply 501June 23, 2023 10:29 PM

they put Audrey in jeopardy in the two hour Port Charles kick off movie; Joe Scanlon had to drill a HOLE IN HER HEAD to relieve pressure.

They were smart to put Audrey in jeopardy; fans already loved her.

by Anonymousreply 502June 23, 2023 10:30 PM

I always loved her grandma chemistry with Elizabeth.

Frankly, she would have deserved an Emmy nom for the story where Ryan assaulted her thinking she was his mother.

Susan Seaforth Hayes said 'many die in Salem...few are buried.'

by Anonymousreply 504June 24, 2023 1:14 AM

Yessss...R500. I'm pretty sure I told this story on DL several years ago.

I visited the GH set in 1981, as a teenager. (Pat Falken Smith was a friend of my parents). Tony & Genie didn't film that day, which was disappointing, because of course I wanted to meet Luke & Laura! But I was thrilled nonetheless! It was a day heavy with Steve, Audrey, Gail, Lee, Jessie & Dan....and Heather. (Musta been a Tuesday or Wednesday)

When I was introduced to John Beradino, Rachel Aames, Susan Brown & Peter Hansen (before filming a scene at the Floating Rib), I will NEVER forget John Beradino saying something to the effect: "Nice to meet you. I'm sorry you came on such a boring day, with just us OLD folks."

I said all the right things (because my mother taught me how to be gracious). "No, I don't care, it's a thrill to meet all of you!" (and I threw in a little bit about knowing that John had played professional baseball) Of course I would have liked to meet Genie & Tony...But in that moment, I really felt bad for them! That John felt the need to apologize to a teenager for "only" getting to meet the "old folks".

They were all lovely people. And Robin Matson?? She was even prettier in person than on-screen. I was smitten.

[quote]There was also a black couple who just hung around- NEVER had any stories. Brian and Claudia. And the Hardy's son never did much either.

Ah, Brian & Claudia.....they were cool. Claire Labine made up for that with Justus & Mary Mae! Edward dipped in the Brown Sugar! (Escandalo!) I joke, but it really was a good storyline!

by Anonymousreply 506June 24, 2023 5:23 AM

R505 omg, what an amazing experience and honor.

I was a severely addicted to GH from 1980-1997. I hardly ever missed an episode. I remember one day I forgot to tape the show and I drove all the way home on my lunchtime to tape the show. It came on at 2. This was when life was complicated, no DVR’s, internet, just a VCR - but it got the job done.

Does anyone else remember the General Hospi-Tale song? I thought it was a cool song and if course I memorized the whole damn song. OH SNAP!

R507/508: General Hospi-Tale is one of the best -- if not THE best --novelty songs ever written!!

Cuz good girls don't....

And Annie won't!

And you all know what I know what I mean.....

Rock it hard, rock it steady Pick yourself up and get yourself ready Wave your arms let me hear you yell We're gonna rap about General Hospi-Tale

Right on, R510!!

YOUNG DOCTORS IN LOVE was inspired by Garry Marshall's teenage daughters' love of General Hospital. And listening to the two of them & their friends babble about it constantly.

R505 My friend was interning on GH circa 1992, and she look me to the set. It was pretty amazing.

It must've been February. It was while Tony Geary was still Bill Eckhart. He was there! Emma Samms had returned, and she and Tony were sitting at a table at Kelly's. Emma smiled at me! I was smitten.

Stewart Damon was there. My friend was wearing a baseball cap that said "Women in Film." He pointed to it, and said "good thing too!" I spied AJ and Jason in a dressing room playing video games. They were hot as fuck back then.

And, the best thing was seeing the original Edward Quatermain David Lewis. Though, he seemed sort of out of it. Ana Lee was there too.

It seemed like a really fun working environment.

by Anonymousreply 513June 24, 2023 11:07 AM

[quote] And, the best thing was seeing the original Edward Quartermaine, David Lewis.

Very cool. I loved Lewis as the original Edward. He had a fantastic sense of timing and a gift for dry wit, and Lewis as a 1930s-40s movie actor had the poise and elegance of a tycoon who was to the manor born. He embodied the perfect combination of curmudgeon and teddy bear, with a devilish glint in his eye. I also loved how effortlessly rolling off Shakespearean quotes like other speak about the weather.

by Anonymousreply 514June 24, 2023 3:03 PM

R514 me, too. I did not particularly care for the new Edward after Lewis was replaced. That’s how you know Lewis was amazing in his role when the new one does not measure up.

by Anonymousreply 515June 24, 2023 4:52 PM

R514 It was really neat seeing him, and Ana Lee. I think it must've been one of his last days on the set. If you remember, he didn't seem too well during his final stint on the show.

One thing I remember- Tony Geary was sitting there doing his scene with Emma Samms. He said something like "Wait, this line makes no sense..." and explained why. I voice came over a speaker explaining it. Geary sighed and said "Alright" and rolled his eyes and shook his head.

It was very cool seeing the Quartermain living room, and the lobby of the hospital, which was like just a little sliver of the set.

At this point, I just remember highlights- I wish I remembered more particulars. After that, I moved to LA, and I've been on a ton of sets, and cool places. But that might top them all.

by Anonymousreply 516June 24, 2023 5:13 PM

R516 - By that time did they still have the iconic circular hub nurses station with this giant numbers painted on the elevator doors? I died a little inside when they revamped the hospital to be sterile and bland.

by Anonymousreply 517June 24, 2023 7:23 PM

R517 yes, because it didn't look like the hospital I was used to in the '80.

by Anonymousreply 518June 24, 2023 8:38 PM

R516 were you allowed to take photos? I love any behind the scene photos of sets. I am always curious what it really looks like when they walk “upstairs”

by Anonymousreply 519June 24, 2023 8:47 PM

R519 Didn't think it was my place to take pictures. When you walk upstairs on a set, *just* out of camera range the steps stop. You'd just be looking at the gray brack walls of the sound stage and or the lighting rig.

What was Pat Falken Smith like r505? Ann Marcus described her as very litigious. She did great work on DAYS and GH, but she flopped at Guiding Light and Ryan’s Hope. DAYS should have snapped her up when her second stint at GH ended.

by Anonymousreply 523June 24, 2023 11:41 PM

R522 aww thank you. I loved that site. I really liked looking at the photos and reading the commentary of the man who got the privilege to visit the set. How exciting.

by Anonymousreply 524June 25, 2023 1:40 AM

[quote] What was Pat Falken Smith like [R505]? Ann Marcus described her as very litigious

Oh, that was absolutely true! She brought lawsuits against just about every soap (or the studio/network) that she worked on. I remember my father (who was a lawyer) joking about it. But the thing was...she was such a good Head Writer/proven commodity, that she kept getting hired -- and rehired, by the very shows (or networks) that she sued. (See: DAYS, GH)

I have very fond memories of Pat! She was a large woman -- not fat, but tall & broad-shouldered ("big-boned"). And she had a great, booming laugh! And she was quick to laugh/had a great sense of humor. But then, I just knew her as family friend. Maybe she was hellish to work with (or for), I don't know. She had a daughter my age, with whom I was friends, and I spent some nights at their house....and a vacation rental in Trancas. There was no TV in that beach rental house, so we spent our evenings playing board games, and cards, etc. I thought she was fun!

She didn't have the happiest personal life. Her first husband died (heart-attack, IIRC) when their daughter was still in diapers. Then, she married some asshole who bankrupted her. I can't remember whether he embezzled from her, or just made horrible investments of her money, but all the money she'd made from her first stint on DAYS (in the early-mid 1970s) was gone by the time she divorced him.

Sadly, she developed Alzheimer's in her late-60s or so, and died at age 75.

^^ signed, R505

by Anonymousreply 526June 25, 2023 8:45 AM

P.S. It was Pat's teenage daughter, Kathy, who brought Wayne Northrup to Pat's attention for Roman Brady. Kathy was HUGE Dynasty-fan, when Pat was developing the Bradys & Roman; told her, "You should check this guy out for Marlena's love-interest." And the rest, as they say, was history.

John Ingle was the Edward I grew up with, and with all due respect to him, David Lewis *was* Edward.

by Anonymousreply 532June 26, 2023 2:51 AM

David Lewis was the best. And I was very resistant to John Ingle. But, he eventually won me over. He could be funny, but not in the way Lewis was.

I remember when Jed Allen was Edward. Which was silly because I think he was very close in age to Stuart Damon.

by Anonymousreply 533June 26, 2023 3:16 AM

R533 Jed Allen was basically playing CC Capwell. It seemed like the show was trying to recreate CC/Gina. (15:30) of CC Q.

Jed Allan was actually younger than Stuart Damon. But then soap ages are always out of whack. Carly is a 40 year old grandmother.

by Anonymousreply 535June 26, 2023 11:11 PM

Jed should have played a Quartermaine cousin, or Heather’s therapist.

by Anonymousreply 536June 26, 2023 11:38 PM

Jed Allan was two years older than Stuart Damon.

Jed was born March 1, 1935.

Stuart was born Feb. 5, 1937.

interestingly, both died at age 84.

Jed died March 9, 2019.

Stuart died June 29, 2021.

by Anonymousreply 537June 26, 2023 11:52 PM

I was going to suggest that Jed could have been cast as Quentin Quartermaine (Alan's cousin) but I'm also wondering if they should have just did that with John Ingle.

by Anonymousreply 538June 26, 2023 11:58 PM

R530: Something else I remembered...which I suppose is only interesting as historical footnote. Pat's first husband (father of her child) was one of the 335 survivors of the USS Arizona. She never spoke of it, but my father (who was a friend of his) told me that Jack was sitting on the john, taking a shit, when the bombing started. (or at least, that's what Jack told my dad).

by Anonymousreply 539June 27, 2023 12:58 AM

Celia Quartermaine-there’s a character that was front burner during most of her run, then never mentioned again. At least Jimmy Lee was brought up in the past couple of years.

by Anonymousreply 540June 27, 2023 2:51 AM

Careful what you ask for, R540. Given GH's history of trashing veterans Celia will come back as a transsexual serial killer with a burned face.

by Anonymousreply 541June 27, 2023 3:27 AM

by Anonymousreply 543June 27, 2023 12:10 PM

I got a kick out of it when the characters on The Americans were watching Celia Quartermaine and Grant Putnam on General Hospital. When I though about it, I realized the storylines were somewhat similar.

by Anonymousreply 544June 27, 2023 1:01 PM

One thing I liked about Celia is that she wasn't "Tracy No. 3." I guess I should be glad that Tracy wasn't around to be killed off in the Ice Princess storyline, but it really feels like Alexandra was intended to be her substitute.

by Anonymousreply 545June 28, 2023 12:41 AM

r544 - Yes, I think that was supposed to be an inside joke to anyone who was a teenager in the early 80s watching GH. The Americans was incredibly clever and entertaining, truly an amazing TV show from start to finish.

Unless he comes to town to kill the greasy POS mobster who drive his mother crazy...

by Anonymousreply 569July 3, 2023 7:58 PM

Brenda had sex with her ex's stepson Michael? Also, if memory serves, Michael's bio father A.J. really was shagging Brenda's older sister Julia. I always thought it would make perfect sense for A.J. to have a couple of bastard kids running around out there, and Julia would be a nice tie-back. If not her, then either that gold-digging altar-jilting Nikki or the amorphous Keisha Ward. Hell, could be all three.

R571 - But that was the original story in the first place. Brenda lied that the baby was Dante's to save herself from Alexsander and, later, retribution by The Balkan. WTF would she have put herself in their crosshairs if it really was Dante's to begin with?

by Anonymousreply 580July 4, 2023 4:10 PM

Renee Anderson (sounds like a DAYS character) who played Alexandria had a tough act to follow in that she helped fill the Q void left by Tracy.

She was good...attractive, very much a Q. But...something was off...was she trying to grasp for lines; did Tony do too much adlibbing.

Did the lunacy of the story get to her? My boyfriend's brother is freezing the world!

Still, she's young. Or was. I would think late 50s early 60s now. (I know that's not young but...it's young adjacent).

I'd call her in and see what she looks like; a little late now but I bet there are flashbacks of her and Laura sparring.

by Anonymousreply 587July 14, 2023 2:19 AM

Does ANYONE believe he had 40,000 dollars? Also Guardians CAN be reimbursed. It is a job. He should find out how much a LAWYER would have charged him if they replaced the sister. In Tylers case he probably needed someone to make medical decisions. Does Tyler think doctors and hospitals are free?

by Anonymousreply 588July 14, 2023 3:53 AM

The Maurice Benard Interview......(55 mins) talking about being homeless. I am sorry---and I say this as someone who struggled in the 90s and is now sober---but I just see Tyler lying. Friends don't "abandon" you for no reason. You owe them money. Or you are a mean drunk. Or whatever. He is just wallowing in this video over victimhood. I haven't had a drop of alcohol in many years. I don't blame anyone but myself for anything my abusive behavior caused. That's why I'm not drunk anymore and Tyler is.

Offsite Link
by Anonymousreply 589July 14, 2023 4:12 AM

Tyler lacked any humility in the Maurice interview. Didn't seem all that remorseful either. But sure could play the victim and the martyr very well.

I also wasn't hearing any recovery in his story. Wasn't hearing about his day to day struggle to stay sober, which is something most people in recovery discuss openly.

Lots of holes in the story he told Maurice too. But that's what he was willing to own up to at the time.

by Anonymousreply 590July 14, 2023 4:26 AM

R590. Agreed. I could care less about Maurice Benard but I never thought this interview was a good idea because talking about your struggles can be triggering. I'm not even sure he was sober in this video. When you drink EVERY DAY---you think you are sober if you haven't drank for 4 days, but you aren't. When he talks about his male "friend" who told him couldn't stay with him, maybe Tyler showed up drunk? The stolen wallet, phone stuff sounds like booze excuses.

by Anonymousreply 591July 14, 2023 4:39 AM

[quote]The stolen wallet, phone stuff sounds like booze excuses.

That definitely didn't ring true.

Nor did the walking from Union Station and happening to end up at Skid Row. Or somehow making it to Toluca Lake where his friend found him sleeping on the bench.

by Anonymousreply 592July 14, 2023 4:46 AM

He lied and kept a lot of things out in the Maurice interview.

Same with Kirsten Storms.

by Anonymousreply 593July 21, 2023 1:00 PM

R593, that's the soap press for ya.

by Anonymousreply 594July 21, 2023 4:49 PM

Maurice isn't exactly the soap press.

But yes, I agree that Tyler withheld a lot in his chat with Maurice and certainly put his spin on things to come off as a bit of a victim.

He did acknowledge his behavior is what cost him the jobs at GH and Days, but everything else that happened to him, he presented it as he had no part in it happening.

by Anonymousreply 595July 21, 2023 6:01 PM

R595, no, I should have put 'soap press' in quotes.

They're a group of people often attacked for not being tough enough but here's Maurice not pushing for answers.

If he got a reputation for being cut throat and tough, actors would stop going on the show.
