I know I’m just a nobody from Podunk, and all those high-powered accomplished people out-glam me on every level, but I find the whole thing inane.
by Anonymous | reply 4 | May 1, 2023 11:49 PM |
many of the attendees in recent years are not "high-powered" they are fashion and influencer It boys and It girls of the moment.
by Anonymous | reply 6 | May 1, 2023 11:51 PM |
That must be it then. I’ve aged out of “it” people. See the latest New York magazine for their list of “It Girls.”

I made an It Girl thread a couple weeks ago on DL. Nobody cared.

Rami Malek kept it casual.
R6 this year will have less social media influencers like they did in the last few years. I think the Kardashians and Paris Hilton etc. who are big stars will be there but it won’t be like last year with a bunch of TikTokers running around.

Paul Mescal was supposed to attend originally but had to decline after his play was extended an extra week. Last week was supposed to be the final week but now this is the final week because demand was so high.

Poor Lila Grace Moss (of whatever her last name is this week). She's not only short (substantially shorter than her 5'7" mother) but plain to the point of homeliness -- but naturally a "model" (in her mother's agency). Seems almost cruel.

The Daily Fail predictably doing the least with the photo captions. Gotta kind of love them.
by Anonymous | reply 51 | May 2, 2023 12:46 AM |
Anna can't change her wig. They glued it on almost a decade ago and promptly lost the solvent for top secret glue. They though it would fall off with time, but a couple years later it had fused with her scull, like the Hapsburgs' hairshirts and Queen Caroline of Brunswick's royal panties.

Doja Cat Is Unrecognizable Dressed as Karl Lagerfeld’s Cat Choupette for the Met Gala 2023
by Anonymous | reply 56 | May 2, 2023 12:52 AM |
r50, I am enchanted by the dress but, sup with the breast area?
by Anonymous | reply 57 | May 2, 2023 12:52 AM |
Ke Huy Quan looks the best out of all the men I've seen so far. I keep searching for an isolated photo of him on the Googler to share. Of the women, I most liked Liu Wen's black dress with the white fabric roses, Grace Elizabeth's shocking pink ensemble, and I hate to say this because I'm not a fan...but Nicole Kidman looks pretty fucking incredible in her peach vintage Chanel. Like a ballerina.
Billie Eilish is a beautiful young woman but she needs a different stylist. She's giving Best Lil Whorehouse In Texas.

Agreed, rescue-chick. Enchanting is the perfect description for the dress, but those caved in titties are distracting.
by Anonymous | reply 64 | May 2, 2023 12:57 AM |
How many people are going to dress as cats? Is poor Choupette even still with us?
by Anonymous | reply 65 | May 2, 2023 1:02 AM |
R7 Yeah I think I've aged-out as well. This stuff used to seem much cooler to me. I'm 50 and I think I'm well and truly over it. All of it. It all seems really vapid.
Vanity is a turn off to me anymore.
by Anonymous | reply 66 | May 2, 2023 1:02 AM |
I don’t know who 80% of these people are. However, the glamour is gone. All these bitches are so basic, with the exception of Sydney.
by Anonymous | reply 67 | May 2, 2023 1:06 AM |
Unfortunately not, R65.
Shortly after this photo was taken, Kim sat on poor Choupette.

by Anonymous | reply 72 | May 2, 2023 1:09 AM |
Nicole Kidman is probably my favourite. She is almost perfection, but for the black shoes.
by Anonymous | reply 73 | May 2, 2023 1:10 AM |
Not really a fan of Leto, but that he out-catted Doja Cat (who is sporting prosthetics again, thinking she's still somehow original and outrageous), made me laugh. And Leto's Choupette costume appears to be beautifully made.
Typically, I'd call that a stunt, but it's thematically appropriate, didn't involve clearing the carpet for a fucking PERFORMANCE, and as I said, I think it's beautifully made.
And I absolutely will think less of Bill Nighy if he's dating Wintour.
by Anonymous | reply 74 | May 2, 2023 1:10 AM |
Halle Bailey looks incredible. Like a Princess.
Sydney Sweeney is the best.

At least put a jewel collar, and swirl some money on the cat.
There is like ZERO energy in that room.
by Anonymous | reply 76 | May 2, 2023 1:11 AM |
Although her ensemble is not extraordinary, I suppose I think that Jessica Chastain's new platinum blonde 'do is fun. I didn't think she had it in her.
by Anonymous | reply 77 | May 2, 2023 1:11 AM |
Nah. Doja's cat look is a million times better than Leto lmao. Wtf. He put on a cat costume. She actually put together a look.

Margot Robbie looks elegant but plain at the same time.
by Anonymous | reply 79 | May 2, 2023 1:12 AM |

by Anonymous | reply 108 | May 2, 2023 1:34 AM |
I like Florence Pughs cropped hair but her stomach pooching out of the open midriff looks terrible. I think it's more Amanda's makeup that is terrible. Blonde hair makes Jessica look like she has personality.

Ben Platt's bubbe bought a Chanel tracksuit in the 90s. Ben is wearing it.

R114 I feel like it's not a fresh concept. I can visualize Claudia Schiffer or really any of those 90s dames in a dress just like that, because I believe they walked in dresses like that in the actual 90s.
by Anonymous | reply 116 | May 2, 2023 1:41 AM |

There was a leak showing most of the 90s supermodels would be in attendance as well as mostly famous actors/models/designers/musicians etc. Anna Wintour was doing away with the social media circus it was becoming over the last few years.
The Kardashians and Hadid’s and Paris Hilton are the only “reality” types here and because they are not low tier reality stars but very rich A List household names. This is Paris Hilton’s first time being invited.
The Met Gala has been criticized in recent years, especially last year, for being cheapened by having so many social media influencers etc. to the point real celebs boycotted. Anna is starting to clean it up again.
by Anonymous | reply 178 | May 2, 2023 2:38 AM |

by Anonymous | reply 234 | May 2, 2023 7:46 AM |
I’ve worked on a production set- it would take Nas about four hours of repeated application of makeup.
Nas likely had to spread his ass cheeks open so his handlers could spray all that glitter up his backside (HAWT!), and ride in standing in a cargo van on the way to the Gala holding a pole so it wouldn’t rub off. There is likely someone standing by to periodically touch him up, he cannot touch anything, sit or go to the bathroom without ruining the effect.
THAT is dedication, folks!

And American Vogue R234.

I saw Anne Hathaway's dress and thought, why is she wearing something that looks like a Versace dress to a Karl Lagerfeld Met Gala? And then I looked it up and it IS Versace. Is that even allowed? Did she break the cardinal rule of fashion? Should she be going straight to fashion jail?
Simu Liu and Ke Huy Quan nailed it. Best dressed men by far. 100% Lagerfeld.
I like Kim Petras, but she's a little squat, and that dressing ain't helping!
I saw a pic of Dua Lipa at what must've been the after party and I thought "oh honey! No!" But then I saw what she wore to the gala and it was much better.
I don't even wanna comment on Jared Leto.
by Anonymous | reply 238 | May 2, 2023 8:35 AM |

R218 only 3 of them were allowed to come this year. I think because they all have legit brands outside of the show. Kendall=Model Kylie=Makeup Mogul and Kim=Makeup Mogul, Fashionista and “actress”.
Kourtney, Khloe and their mom weren’t invited.
by Anonymous | reply 244 | May 2, 2023 10:17 AM |
There was so much hoopla surrounding the Kardashians not being invited that I think Anna decided to invite those three specifically because they have brands outside of the show so their fans can stop complaining
by Anonymous | reply 245 | May 2, 2023 10:19 AM |
I don’t think they invited many politicians, if any, this year.

by Anonymous | reply 247 | May 2, 2023 10:23 AM |
R222 so many A-Listers showed up this year because Anna did away with inviting TikTok and Instagram “stars” this year. They haven’t been coming because the gala was infiltrated by “stars” of social media. I don’t think those who work in television or films or theatre or music or fashion or the world of beauty take kindly to that. Also they tend to hate reality tv stars in their spaces.
There were reports Anna was doing away with all reality tv and influencers coming this year because many felt they “cheapened” the Met Gala and she was trying to bring it back to the A-List event it always was. And it’s obvious that’s what happened this year. She originally wasn’t inviting any Kardashians but she ended up inviting 3 of them that have successful ventures off the show.
Paris Hilton has never been invited. This was her first year and was there because Marc Jacobs invited her. Anna has to approve whoever the designers etc. invite to be at their tables so she approved Paris this year.

I understand your premise, R299. But I can tell you from having worked there that you are very wrong.
There is an army of people with clipboards and earpiece walkie-talkies swarming that event. They are exceptionally good at avoiding the paparazzi, but they are there and they are connected to event and museum security and the NYPD (of which there are hundreds inside and surrounding the Met.
By the way, this also addresses the question up thread about how celebrities know when to show up. There's a rough schedule but also the event works with the publicity teams and assistants for whoever has purchased the table (a fashion house or a retail brand, etc) and will (for example) tell so-and-so's driver to hold them three blocks away so they can clear the carpet.

I went 4 times in the Social X-ray era when I was in my mid-20s and the affair was socialites, some models, NY VIPs, Captains of Industry. When coffee was served the "Young Friends" of the MET could attend. The old folks need the injection of youth. Now at least its all mixed up, every industry, identity, age, ethnicity and so on, and much more dynamic and international.
You don't have the knowledge and attention and money that the old socialites dedicated to couture. Almost no one nowadays has the chic.
As the 80s were my introduction to highflying fashion events, it was before everything went HYPER mediated in the 90s and here we are today.
This is why I've always found it very vulgar and unglamorous that all the merchandising and fashion and self branding is so forward.
It makes sense that this is where we are and this is what fashion events are but I can never really accept these red carpet interviews of the person and what he or she is wearing. This is the OPPOSITE OF CHIC AND ELEGANT. There is no mistery. There is no exclusivity. The only thing on needs is MONEY to buy something fashionable, or inside connections to get a loaner from the archives.
So yes, something has been lost, while other things have been gained.

The makeup last night was so "meh!" I couldn't believe it. Apparently the current trend is towards a nude or understated palette. Nary a bold lip in sight. I'm sorry but if you are doing a bold graphic black and white look for your outfit, you better get a red lip going at LEAST, or you are going to look wan and lackluster in the face area. The starkness of the black and white will stomp all over a delicate pink glosses or a matte rose. And yet, last night, that was THE thing, darling.

I didn't watch, but he could've arrived standing in the back of a box truck, like Marc Jacobs did for his own Venice-themed holiday company party in 2006. It was captured in the opening moments of the documentary "Marc Jacobs & Louis Vuitton".

I don't think Kim K. looked great. Good, yes. For some reason, she always has boring shoes. The dress showed a lot of her legs. Her tits, ass, and small waist have always been so distracting that I don't think people notice that her legs are not great. I would normally not nitpick someone's looks like this, but I think she's done so much towards making women feel insecure about their bodies. E.g., getting tons of plastic surgery and never admitting it. I wouldn't put it past her to have removed her bottom ribs.
by Anonymous | reply 367 | May 3, 2023 2:15 AM |
I don't think Kim Kardashian looked good at all. She looked trashy. Draping a bunch of necklaces over what looks like a bathing suit is not a good outfit.
by Anonymous | reply 368 | May 3, 2023 2:30 AM |
The outfit makes her look squat. From certain angles it looks as if the ropes of pearls were meant to fall somewhere mid-calf, but because she’s so damn short they went all the way to her ankles. Like a little girl wearing mom’s tacky dress. It just gives that look to me.
by Anonymous | reply 369 | May 3, 2023 3:16 AM |
Then, the tall one (Kendall) wears super high platforms, causing her to tower over Kim. Kim should've been the one in platforms, but like I said, she always wears boring shoes. Despite all her workouts, I don't think she's that physical. Prince brought her up on stage, told her to dance, then kicked her off stage b/c she couldn't or wouldn't dance.

R367 I have wondered the same thing, about Kim K and her exaggerated whittled waist. Seems like you'd have to remove ribs to get such cartoonish hourglass figure.
by Anonymous | reply 376 | May 3, 2023 6:00 AM |
I like the constructed and conceptual aspects of Kim Kardashian's looks in general. Her fashion choices are consistent. She wants to create a camera ready cartoon silhouette and she succeeds. Clothes plus all that plastic surgery. I also think the clothes rarely wear her, she wears the clothes. All that said, she is sometimes tacky, sometimes vulgar, and sometimes Kim Kardashian is tacky and vulgar.

Jameela Jamil's comments about the Gala celebrating Karl Lagerfeld:
"Taking to Instagram, Jameela wrote: 'Last night Hollywood and fashion said the quiet part out loud when a lot of famous feminists chose to celebrate at the highest level, a man who was so publicly cruel to women, to fat people, to immigrants, and to sexual assault survivors.
'And all the women's publications, and spectators online, chose to gleefully ignore it.
'Nobody has perfect morals, least of all me, but Jesus Christ we had a year to course correct here, and not award the highest honour possible to a known bigot…and everyone just decided all of a sudden we can separate the art from the artist when *convenient*.
'And it's one rule for us and another rule for everybody else. Last night we relinquished our right to be taken at all seriously about anything important.'
Jameela used the caption of her post to highlight 'slippery tactics and double standards' and warned people should reflect on her points ahead of the next presidential election.
She wrote: 'This isn't about cancel culture. It's not even about Karl. It's about showing how selective cancel culture is within liberal politics, in the most blatant way so far.
'It's about showing why people don't trust liberals. Because of slippery tactics and double standards like this.
'And it's not just Hollywood here, the general public online participated and were entirely complicit in the erasure of the truth last night.
'They replaced their pitchforks with spoons last night, to lap that s**t right up… If we carry on like this, don't be shocked when we lose the next election.'"

by Anonymous | reply 379 | May 3, 2023 12:20 PM |
She writes well, though I don't agree with the argument that Lagerfeld's personae is irredeemable. He was a fashion king. In his lifetime high fashion was conceived as rarefied, highly selective, unfair, even cruel.
I think one of the best gowns on a fat person I have seen recently is the lovely number Mo'nique wore for her standup. That's a gown for a fat person and she looked lovely. Often times, couture and very fashionable ready to wear are not suitable for fatties. We can't say that. We aren't supposed to think it. But that's high fashion.
by Anonymous | reply 380 | May 3, 2023 12:51 PM |
Lizzo's face and hair were pretty. The gown was striking but finally a miss for me. To me it evoked an Art Deco gestural decorative backdrop. A pattern that might be painted on a wall.
by Anonymous | reply 381 | May 3, 2023 1:03 PM |

R386 I know you're acting deliberately stupid but I'll respond anyway.
She's saying Dems will lose the election because they are hypocrites who chastise horrible people one minute and then celebrate horrible people like Lagerfeld the next. She makes a very good point about the mixed signals liberals/Dems give. You can't have it both ways, Karl was a known bigot.
I don't agree Dems will lose or that a Brit has any room to talk American politics but she's articulate and intelligent and makes a good point.

I remember when the Kartrashians had to publicly beg, plead, and grovel to get invited to the Met Gala. Now they're the featured stars. At least in their own minds. And Paris Hilton? Really? I get it that the Met event wants to stay current and be fashion forward. But honestly. Yes, Naomi Campbell look great. But if anyone got a chance to really see a close up of Kate Moss's face. OMG, she looks terrible. Is she still doing drugs?
by Anonymous | reply 390 | May 3, 2023 3:29 PM |
R389, how many people who have been in the public eye for a long time and are interviewed on a regular basis haven't said anything offensive? She makes an idiotic point. Why would we expect talented, creative people to be perfect? We can celebrate Lagerfeld's talent while acknowledging the offensive things he's said. Lagerfeld was born in 1933 and it's not exactly surprising he had certain prejudices. Political correctness is being taken to a ludicrous extreme. Anyone with half a brain knows that people are a mix of good and bad. I guess Wagner should be cancelled because he was anti semitic.
by Anonymous | reply 391 | May 3, 2023 3:51 PM |

R398 what your point, genius? I have no idea who Wagner is, nor do I care. The only reason I know who Lagerfeld is is because of the numerous reports, spanning several years, of his bigotry. If Wagner is a bigot, then it's the same thing.
But honestly, celebrate his work, I really don't care. Twirl in front of the mirror dressed as his cat. You know you want to.

Or anyone at all to be perfect. It’s become beyond exhausting (you’re not the only one exhausted Roxane Gay) to hear from these professional scolds. Their endless purity tests for absolutely anything and everyone.
Fashion is fun but it is filled with shitty judgemental people. We’ve known this for a very long time. Such is life.
Back to the topic: I think the prestige of this event is almost entirely gone. I think it should go full trash. Only famewhores and those needing publicity allowed. It’s pretty much at that point anyway, but it could go lower, get even trashier. Something to aim for next year.
by Anonymous | reply 402 | May 3, 2023 5:38 PM |
I agree that the professional scolds are tiresome. It's just irritating when they all come from the supposedly liberal side and then they have the nerve to celebrate a man who is the antithesis of "inclusive".
It's the equivalent of a conservative "family values" type who is caught having an affair. The hypocrisy is dumb.

I understand what you are saying, but my point is, I disagree. And just as much, I don’t care. It’s fashion. Fashion is judgemental, exclusive and elitist. It’s also fun and creative. Lizzo could offer as many justifications for being there celebrating a man who hated fat people as you could offer reasons she shouldn’t have gone.
I’m not picking a fight with you, I’m just emphasizing my point. I’ll move on. 👍

[quote]R398 what your point, genius? I have no idea who Wagner is, nor do I care.
Richard Wagner, one of the greatest opera composers of all time. You must be trolling. You couldn't have lived such a sheltered life. Nobody's cancelling him. Instead the biggest opera companies try to put on productions of the entire "Ring" cycle. Talent trumps moral outrage. I guess he also gets a pass because he lived in the 19th century, before the Holocaust.
by Anonymous | reply 407 | May 3, 2023 7:27 PM |
R407 are YOU trolling? I honestly thought Wagner was a designer I had never heard of because I couldn't possibly think of why a classical musician who existed 100 years ago would be brought up in the same discussion as the Karl Lagerfeld gala in the year 2023.
Queens like yourself are incapable of logical debate. It fries your pea brains.
by Anonymous | reply 409 | May 3, 2023 8:06 PM |
[quote] Most of these perceptions arise from Wagner's published opinions on a number of topics. Wagner was a prolific writer who published essays and pamphlets on a wide range of subjects throughout his life.[3] Several of his writings have achieved some notoriety, in particular, his essay Das Judenthum in der Musik (Jewishness in Music), a critical view on the influence of Jews in German culture and society at that time. Whether Wagner's operas contain adverse caricatures of Jews or not is a controversial matter among scholars.
[quote] Wagner was promoted during the Nazi era as one of Adolf Hitler's favourite composers. Historical perception of Wagner has been tainted with this association ever since, and there is debate over how Wagner's writings and operas might have influenced the creation of Nazi Germany.

I brought up Wagner, R409 the silly goose, because he was a notorious antisemite and one of Hitler's favorite composers. Yet, his music is performed all over the world. You do know who Hitler is, right? Hint - he's not a fashion designer.
H.P. Lovecraft was notoriously racist, yet his books are read and turned into movies.
