Foxy Brown and Coffee with the Incredible Pam Grier

Just watched these on Tubi and wondered what DLers thought or cared to share. I loved them - even Pam Grier's tits which make many appearances.

by Anonymousreply 43May 10, 2023 4:37 PM

Coffy is a classic

by Anonymousreply 1April 30, 2023 5:18 AM

It's COFFY, OP.

by Anonymousreply 2April 30, 2023 5:20 AM

What's the matter, OP, you jive ass cracker, you couldn't handle MY black ass?

by Anonymousreply 3April 30, 2023 5:24 AM

Or MINE?

by Anonymousreply 4April 30, 2023 5:24 AM

Need to see them. I love Truck Turner, so I'm game for other films in the genre (one I've left mostly unexplored, outside of being aware of their influence on the fashion of the period).

by Anonymousreply 5April 30, 2023 6:34 AM

I haven’t seen them in years but I remember the tagline for Coffy was “Coffy….she’ll cream you!”

by Anonymousreply 6April 30, 2023 6:40 AM

Op, it's a fab genre. Friday Foster and Sheba, Baby are not as good (though Friday has some great cameos and fabulous fashion).

I would recommend Cleopatra Jones next, and if you have TCM, it's running on demand there right now.

Enjoy!

Trashy and ridiculous. Classic good bad films. Jackie Brown is also on Tubi. Pam Grier could not act in her youth but she can now. Great film, Jackie Brown with startling twists in the plot.

by Anonymousreply 8April 30, 2023 3:48 PM

Pam was not terrible, merely inexperienced and not naturally gifted with acting talent. But what she did have was a great screen presence. And I don't know if she studied or if it was a matter of just being smart and figuring it out as she went along, but she is a much better actress than at the beginning of her career and I love that she is still working.

My feeling is the Academy ought to consider her for an Honorary Oscar. She's been a working actress for 50+ years, was a cultural icon in the black community, and actually has talent. If they can give Wes Studi an Oscar for playing Indian #3 for 30 years, they can give one to Pam.

by Anonymousreply 9April 30, 2023 3:53 PM

These films are notorious for the bad acting, gratuitous nudity and violence. But no one more beautiful, even in those horrible costumes and ugly makeup.

Pam is a gorgeous woman and a national treasure. She should get an Oscar.

by Anonymousreply 11April 30, 2023 5:21 PM

I think if Pam lived in any other decade’s style besides the garish (though very fun) 70s, she’d have rightfully topped the Great Beauty lists on here and everywhere else. Stunning woman, and became a very good actress as she aged.

by Anonymousreply 12April 30, 2023 5:24 PM

They don't give Oscars for being a beautiful national treasure, R11.

by Anonymousreply 13April 30, 2023 5:28 PM

Agree, r12. Absolutely gorgeous woman and still looks good.

Very much enjoyed her in “Escape From LA” with Kurt Russell. Another trashy, violent, stupid but fun movie.

by Anonymousreply 14April 30, 2023 5:29 PM

Black Belt Jones should be added to your list.

by Anonymousreply 15April 30, 2023 5:31 PM

She reminds me of Stormy with her rebellious equestrian self

OMFG! I hope you're kidding.

by Anonymousreply 17April 30, 2023 7:14 PM

Not at all, R17. The Academy gives Honorary Oscars for more than just "performances." Roger Corman got one. You think he didn't deserve it? He practically invented drive-in cinema, which not only is culturally relevant, it helped save the industry pre-blockbuster.

Pam in absolutely culturally relevant. She helped invent and make popular the black female action hero in a genre that also empowered black characters. She is an icon in some cultures. That, to be, is a significant cinematic contribution worthy of an award.

Why should Jennifer Hudson have an Oscar for giving one horrifically awful performance that everyone has massive buyer's remorse over, yet Pam Grier, who will be watched and will inspire young black women for generations, should not? (And let's face it, Grier's worst performance in film is better than anything Hudson ever did.)

Let's even use Wes Studi as an example. He got an award for politically correct reasons. He's never done anything, nor contributed in any way to the culture of cinema. If you want to honor a Native American actor, there are others who have done more than he has. Hell, Graham Greene has had a better career and is even Oscar nominated. But the Academy decided Wes Studi was culturally relevant for an Honorary Oscar. Why shouldn't Pam Grier be? Not everyone has a 50+ year career in cinema, either. Pam endured a lot and is still successful.

by Anonymousreply 18April 30, 2023 7:25 PM

If Samuel L. Jackson can get one…

by Anonymousreply 19April 30, 2023 7:25 PM

Pardon all the typos. I have a cat in my lap.

by Anonymousreply 20April 30, 2023 7:25 PM

r18, 👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼

by Anonymousreply 21April 30, 2023 7:31 PM

Does she go undercover as a prostitute in every movie?

by Anonymousreply 22May 1, 2023 8:25 PM

i've done it, OP. It's not as fun as Pam makes it seem.

by Anonymousreply 23May 1, 2023 8:43 PM

Still shocking Pam didn't get nominated for Best Actress for Jackie Brown. Everyone was expecting her to be nominated for one, especially since she was nominated for a SAG and Golden Globe.

by Anonymousreply 24May 1, 2023 8:51 PM

Pam was outstanding in "Fort Apache: The Bronx" and definitely deserved an Oscar nod. Apparently the producers were nervous about testing such a beautiful woman in the role of a murderous crack whore. Pam went method, not bathing and dressing in rags, and says when she showed up for the audition they didn't recognize her.

And I loved the tagline for Coffy: "Coffy — she'll CREAM YOU."

by Anonymousreply 25May 1, 2023 11:55 PM

Jackie Brown is an airline stewardess who smuggles for a weapons dealer, she gets set up by the feds to catch the dealer. I don't think there is any nudity in the film. An exceptionally well written film, holds your interest.

Miss Pam is also in the classic horror movie, “Scream, Blacula, Scream”.

Lots of fabulous 70s fashion, voodoo and black Drac. None of which can hold a candle to Ms. Grier.

by Anonymousreply 29May 2, 2023 7:21 PM

In Sheba her acting seems to start getting a little better but who really cares about the acting in her films? Or a period?

by Anonymousreply 30May 7, 2023 12:52 PM

Jackie Brown is Quentin Tarantino's best movie. Fight me.

by Anonymousreply 31May 7, 2023 1:12 PM

It's the only Tarentino film I will watch.

by Anonymousreply 32May 7, 2023 1:25 PM

Grindhouse is also one of my favorite QT films. It really captures that 1970's film era.

by Anonymousreply 35May 9, 2023 1:07 PM

Not just a pistol. She also hid broken glass in her 'fro and when some phony white bitch went to snatch her wig off, she got her fingers nearly severed. THAT is one ghetto fabulous bar of chocolate..

Foxy Brown was supposed to be a sequel to Coffy but they changed it and made it into another movie.

I love this scene from “Coffy”.

Jessica Chastain leaves ‘Doll house’ on Bway june 10. I hope they put together a national tour with Pam Grier. “ the really big doll house”

by Anonymousreply 41May 10, 2023 2:34 AM

Lesbian bar fight from "Foxy Brown." Fun fact - the blonde dyke that starts the fight with Foxy was Linda Carter's stunt double in "Wonder Woman," and she is also clearly visible in the infamous "blood splatter" elevator scene in "Earthquake."

Oh, and bitch r40 - check your racist ass and get your eyes checked. She's obviously putting razor blades in her wig in that scene.
