Schadenfruede: Football & Broken Dreams
I don't know this guy from Adam. But it seems this young man's dreams didn't work out as expected. I'm sympathetic.
However: as a previously-underfunded professional artist who has spent a lot of time and money helping underfunded public art programs, it also made me laugh. This sort of thing always does.

We'll have to wait through the second and third rounds, R1. Thankfully, that'll be over with the weekend.

I know what you mean, OP. When I was in high school, I worked all four years in the library, was in both regular choir and show choir, and was in plays. (Yet I thought no one knew I'm gay? Bitch, please! Anyway...)
My junior year, our librarian asked the school board for additional funds to update several reference books, including The Encyclopedia Britannica. Ours was so old, it had ink graffiti of peace signs, flowers, "Make Love Not War" and "Bobby Briggs blew it!" The last U.S. president was Nixon. She was told, flatly, "No."
Our choir needed new folders so our director charged them on her personal credit card. Show choir members had to pay for their own outfits. At least our drama department head was well connected enough to the school board to have a charge card for the department to buy lumber for sets. Cast members had to provide their own props and costumes.
Meanwhile, the football and basketball teams as well as the marching band, got new uniforms and equipment every other year, when there were unused uniforms from previous years still on their hangers in storage. No fundraising for these guys! The show choir always had to provide our own transportation because it cost too much money in gas. The school corporation bought two tour type busses (albeit used) for both the major sports teams (not including track and baseball) and marching band. Cheerleaders and color guard had to ride in a regular school bus.

He was drafted high in the second round by Tennessee. Don't pity him; he's a millionaire many times over from NIL money and his place on the financial pecking order of the NFL

Unlike DLers, he can still pursue his dreams.

Well, if football doesn't work out, I'm sure he has a valuable degree to fall back on.

"The top second-round pick will sign a deal estimated to be a four-year, $8.68 million contract which includes a $3.87 million signing bonus, per Over the Cap. The last pick of the second round has a four-year, $5.24 million contract with a $1.37 million signing bonus."
He's a qb, so they make more. And the salary was in 2020. The cap has gone up since then.

Does he get a participation trophy for trying ? Did he hide in his safe space the past few days ? Was his anxiety triggered ?

In their defense, r5, athletic programs get things like new uniforms because they bring in the most money from alumni, backers, fans, etc. It is a reflection of societal values.

That was kind of my point, R11 . Also though, after re-reading my own post, it wasn't clear; these uniforms, busses, etc. were paid for out of the regular school budget, not alumni, boosters or other forms of financial support. There were cuts to basic educational supplies and services to pay for the sport related extravagances. Anything like "band boosters" was to provide meals and other niceties. Of course, the budget cuts were always gleefully from the arts first.

Of course. In college, they're pretty much completely separate entities, financially.

All pre-draft WAGs do, R2. The players get drafted the WAGs get traded (in).

And he will still be a lot richer than you will ever hope to be, R16. Pro players always make more than cube-dwellers.

It already happened, R14. Come & gone. There's no "saving" it.

He was expected by most to be in the first draft picks. The fact that he didn't get picked at all was crushing. His toe injury is something that is treatable and will should heal well to have a robust career. I guess teams didn't want to invest in prospect that wasn't zero risk? Sad.

'Twould have been great, R22. But I don't follow memes to the point that it would've occurred to me to include it.
