Proposed legislation would eliminate protections for historic structures, allowing them to be demolished and replaced without regard to local regulations. This would be especially disastrous for Miami Beach, Key West, and St Augustine! The vote is scheduled for next week.

Um, no. The highest point in in the peninsula is roughly 300 feet above sea level.

This must be part of the War on Tourism in Florida. First Disney, now this. Seems strange since it is such a big part of Miami’s economy. Guess all they care about is rich developers making more money.

Haven’t seen anything about this on national news channels. They’ll probably report it after it happens.

They’re going scorched earth on the damn state. They may as well drop an atomic bomb on the place and be done with it.

No defenders of art deco in South Beach on DL? What about Key West? Who cares?

R12 - that was a historic condo?
by Anonymous | reply 13 | April 27, 2023 11:36 AM |
DeSantis and the Republicans don't like the historic buildings, because they are " too gay" looking with all of the lights and fancy appointments...although they can't say " gay" in their state. They want to return to a more masculine look for the city and the state. Leaked photos of what they are imagining have recently come to light, which have "de-gayed" the look and will soon pass the legislature.

It’s not fair to say Ron and his legislature aren’t fans of historical architecture. They just like buildings that are properly configured.

I love with states bitch about federal control and then do the same thing to their municipalities.

Just what FL beach towns need - more high rise condos. How depressing.
by Anonymous | reply 18 | April 27, 2023 4:15 PM |
Carl Hiaasen has been writing about greedy developers ruining FL for years.
by Anonymous | reply 19 | April 27, 2023 4:17 PM |
R18, and, as the article notes, there probably won’t be the infrastructure to support all of those high-rise condos.

There is no corner of our lives that has not been poisoned by Trump and his followers, all of whom have been given permission to be the horrible people they have always been but now unfettered, or wanted to be or were in the past but had not yet been lauded and empowered.
Not one fucking thing has been untouched by their evil.

That would be criminal...Replace the beautiful Art deco buildings with what..... Trump like Towers?
