Three high school seniors arrested in fatal rock-throwing incident killing 20 year old female driver

Three men were arrested after allegedly hurling a landscaping rock at a Colorado woman, killing her as she drove just outside of Denver, authorities said Wednesday.

Alexa Bartell, 20, "was killed when a rock was thrown through her windshield as she was driving" north in the 10600 block of Indiana Street at about 10:45 p.m. in Westminster on April 19, according to a statement from Jefferson County Sheriff's investigators.

Bartell was the last of several cars "struck by large landscaping rocks in a spree that began shortly after" 10 p.m. that night near 100th Avenue and Simms Street in Westminster, officials said.

Joseph Koenig, Nicholas “Mitch” Karol-Chik and Zachary Kwak, all 18, were taken into custody at their homes in Arvada, according to the sheriffs statement.

The suspects were traveling in a black 2016 Chevy Silverado that night, though it wasn't immediately clear who was driving or threw the rock that killed Bartell, officials said.

"All three are suspected of throwing rocks and all three are currently facing charges of" first-degree murder by extreme indifference, according to the sheriff.

It wasn't immediately clear if the three men had hired or been assigned criminal defense lawyers to speak on their behalf.

This happened in Houston some years ago but they never caught the culprits. It was all over the news and a reward offered but nothing came of it.

by Anonymousreply 2April 26, 2023 5:51 PM

Senseless violence that ended a life. The culprits should be punished to the fullest extent of the law to make an example of them. If parents aren't going to raise kids that know the difference between right and wrong, they will end up in jail.

Three ugly assholes.

I'm so so glad they're facing first-degree murder charges. That's what this clearly was.

What gets me is: If I were planning to go out and murder someone for shits & giggles, I'd pick someone I thought was deserving. I wouldn't strike random people whose faces I don't even see.

I mean, if you're gonna maybe do 25-to-life, at least make it count.

Soulless, ugly, [italic]and[/italic] stupid.

by Anonymousreply 5April 26, 2023 6:57 PM

Zach Kwak?

Looks like a bunch of groady, glue-sniffing losers.

As usual, what a waste. Poor girl was just 20.

Meth.

Scary, violent people.

A few decades ago I was driving on a winter night on a highway outside a large city, my boss as passenger en route to a new work project we would start the next day in another city. As we passed under an overpass, a large concrete block crashed through the windshield and landed atop the stick shift, one of the two holes in the large block framing the stick and the other the rear view mirror and loads of tiny glass shards. I remember it was so shocking that I had to keep retracing what I was doing to explain the noise and mess and danger of the situation.

I drove to a nearby highway patrol office of some sort. The officers were not unsympathetic, but completely nonplussed. It happened all the time, they said, and with some grave injuries, and almost never anyone caught or brought to any kind of justice.

I had never very big on driving and saw it more as a necessary evil, but that event made and, a couple of other near accidents that same winter made me rethink the 'need' to drive. I still did it, but rom that winter, I never did without thinking of the dangers and did it as little as possible. Today I live in a place where that kind of random violence is all but unknown, I don't own a car and haven't rented one for 5 years or so. It's not something I miss in the least, and that horrifying incident of 'What happened? What happened?' flashes back only when I read stories like this.

Female? RIP

by Anonymousreply 9April 26, 2023 10:57 PM

I read stories like this and do you know what I want? I want the parents of these three fine, upstanding citizens to appear in court as well. I want them shown individually on the local news and in newspapers. I just do - these lowlifes did not just appear in the world. They were born, "raised" (more likely ignored), etc... and I want the world to see who spawned such monsters.

Oh, and I want public stockades too... so the parents and the three murderers can be mocked by the public. I want them humiliated.

I'm not a good person...

by Anonymousreply 10April 27, 2023 1:06 AM

R10. I could not agree with you more. And I don't think think you are a bad person. People have babies and then don't raise them. Hold them accountable too. Stockades are fine too. Public humiliation is worth a try. It worked in the old days. Who knows if these low life's would even care? MUCH stronger on violent crime is the only way. I do not care what color they are, what sex they are, what gender they identify with or hold old they are. Hold them accountable. Let the jail system raise them since their parents didn't. Zero sympathy.

The kids need to do some time for that. When I was 13 a buddy and I stretched a garden hose across the street at windshield level. A car came by as we hid in a bush. The hose stretched for a second then broke the cars window. We thought it would be funny, not thinking it through, feeling awful afterward we learned our lesson, we never did that again.

In my hometown, when I was a kid, a 400lb man waited on a overpass in the wee hours until a vehicle, a UPS truck, drove under it, on the all but deserted interstate.

The 400lb man* flung himself off the overpass, deliberately landing on the truck , killing himself and the UPS driver, a married father of a young boy.

*This happened in the 1990s before EVERYONE was fat, 400lbs was a lot back then, the equivalent to 650lbs in 2023 weight, “accounting for inflation.”

by Anonymousreply 13April 27, 2023 5:36 AM

Those three are barbarians, mongoloids.

by Anonymousreply 14April 27, 2023 6:03 AM

I think the teen brain, in its underdeveloped and impulsive state, seriously doesn't comprehend that doing stupid shit like this can actually kill someone. I think they believe it'll only damage the car. The reasoning is just not quite there, yet. This happened in Michigan (Flint area) a few years ago, also.

Three details I got wrong: it was early 2001, not the 90s, the guy was 300lbs which would have been like 400lbs today, and the driver worked for Schwann’s, not UPS. The driver who was killed by the 300lb man had several young kids, not just one.

I looked up the story after i posted and I wanted to come back and set the record straight!

by Anonymousreply 16April 27, 2023 3:07 PM

R4, those people all look way older than 18. As you go from left to right, each person looks 10 years older than the previous guy.

by Anonymousreply 17April 27, 2023 3:24 PM

They all have huge noses. What's up with that?

by Anonymousreply 18April 27, 2023 3:27 PM

And at least two have receding hairlines!

by Anonymousreply 19April 27, 2023 4:27 PM

R15, good thing then that these cases are always well-publicized then so that pretty much everyone over the age of 12 knows that hurling large rocks off overpasses (or rolling a big log off a cliff when you’re aware there’s someone standing directly below) can easily kill someone.

Eighteen year olds know better. A nine year old knows better.

If these three shiftless losers were black, everyone would be calling them animals. Instead you’re here saying kids don’t know any better. They’re EIGHTEEN years old. They knew the potential for harm, they just didn’t care.

I’m tired of this ‘not-fully-developed brain’ excuse that is constantly trotted out these days. So what? That’s changed very little in hundreds of years, but now it’s everyone’s excuse for being a murderous dumbass.

Look at them, they have nothing to lose! What the fuck do they care?

by Anonymousreply 20April 27, 2023 4:40 PM
And at least two have receding hairlines!

Too much testosterone.

by Anonymousreply 21April 27, 2023 5:04 PM
They’re EIGHTEEN years old. They knew the potential for harm…

They knew about the Laws of Physics. They learnt all about Isaac Newton in school.

by Anonymousreply 22April 27, 2023 9:10 PM

Took a photo of the car as a memento— that’s beyond an impulsive moment. That’s sociopathy.

The one that looks like a 42 year old bum was protected by his dad: “Koenig’s father was also arrested for allegedly trying to obstruct his son's arrest, the sheriff's office said.”

Such trash!

by Anonymousreply 24April 28, 2023 12:08 AM

I’m guessing none of these three was homecoming king, football quarterback or valedictorian of the high school. I can see one asshole or two together doing this for kicks. But three? True losers. It’s so depressing that the lovely young woman lost her life for nothing.

Bullshit R15.

When I was in high school, a kid a couple years ahead of me dropped a large rock from an overpass onto a car and it went through the windshield killing the driver. He and the two kids with him were caught, not sure how the police found them or if they turned themselves in. It happened in the summer and that fall he was back at school. It’s pretty shocking to think about it now; it was in the late 60s. Small town.

by Anonymousreply 33May 12, 2025 11:37 AM

What happened to them?

The worst I knew about was a friend’s sister was staying at the Flagship Hotel in Galveston and since it was along a pier and back then the windows opened (I guess?) , she and her friend got a bunch of tampons wet with water and dropped them on other guests.

Actually, when I was commuting to DC from Baltimore, a bunch of kids threw rocks at our train windows. Scared the crap out of me.

by Anonymousreply 34May 12, 2025 12:16 PM

Flagship, post-Hurricane Ike. It was such an iconic Galveston building but was torn down.
