He's kind of adorable! I dunno, I suppose I can relate to his midlife journey. The ennui and sadness. The baby steps. I get it.

My partner of fifteen years and I separated right before Covid and the shocking weirdness that was Lockdown. I was suddenly alone in a new house, cut off from all other humans, still reeling from the break up, unable to visit family or invite a friend to visit me. I became so depressed during the pandemic, I thought I might die. I was sure that I was dying inside, and I was going to live the rest of my life as a husk.

In many ways that person did die, does not exist anymore. But I'm not a husk. Just an older, wiser, more grounded and lucid version of myself. The idealism died, but beneath that is experience and earned wisdom. A more seasoned and steady view of things. A surrender to forces larger than one's will and one's ego. A surrender to the Tao.

Losing every marker and touchstone that once defined and demarcated your life can, if you surrender to it, turn out to be a very liberating and wonderful opportunity. But it's destabilizing as fuck and it takes a long time to regain one's balance and rebuild yourself and your life from the ground up. And you do have to be very kind and very patient to yourself. Almost like parenting a scared little child, you have to just go real slow and be super patient and nice to yourself.
