Of course he was forced out and of course he didn't know. It would have been way to risky for them to allow a live wire like him to be on air after he found out. He could have done more damage. He is done. He will reemerge somewhere soon. Probably do a book tour and speaking tour. But his time in the major league spotlight is over. He did it to himself.

Conservative wingnut Rod Dreher:
Was it because of the Dominion lawsuit settlement? Was firing Tucker one of the demands Fox agreed to? Or was it the case that facing such a massive payout — I think worth 25 percent of the entire value of Fox News — they couldn’t afford any longer to keep on a host whose show, despite being the top rated in cable news, lost money.
Did you know that? Yes, it’s true. The Left’s boycott threats intimidated woke capitalists, who declined to advertise on his show. The advertisers he did have, I understand (though not from him), paid a bargain rate. I don’t know if the show cost Fox money, but it wasn’t making them much, despite the blockbuster ratings.
Unless he has some other media plan up his sleeve, I hope Tucker Carlson runs for president. He has said in the past, both publicly and to me privately, that he wouldn’t do that to his family, but maybe he has, or will, change his mind.

I agree with R56. This can't be Dominion. Other hosts did far worse things. Maybe it is just lack of sponsors for his show. People familiar with the situation who were not authorized to comment publicly said the decision to fire Carlson came straight from Fox Corp. Chairman Rupert Murdoch.
Carlson’s exit is related to the discrimination lawsuit filed by Abby Grossberg, the producer fired by the network last month, the people said. Carlson’s senior executive producer Justin Wells has also been terminated.
Murdoch is also said to be concerned over Carlson’s coverage of the Jan. 6, 2021, insurrection at the U.S. Capitol, in which the host has promoted the conspiracy theory that it was provoked by government agents.
The decision is not related to the $787.5-million settlement Fox News agreed to pay to Dominion Voting Systems last week, according to a representative for Dominion.

One of the funnier parts of the Abby Grossberg suit is that she says Tucker called Sidney Powell a cunt. Domenico Montenaro of NPR just said on All Things Considered that he believes that bit because he himself heard Tucker call another woman a cunt behind the scenes at the 2016 Republican Convention. Montenaro said that when he called Tucker on his language, Tucker’s response was, “Well, she is!”
“Pure joy,” one Fox reporter told Rolling Stone of their reaction to the split. “No one is untouchable. It’s a great day for America, and for the real journalists who work hard every day to deliver the news at Fox.”
“It was a good move to part ways with Tucker,” added a producer. “He knowingly spread lies throughout his time at Fox, but I fear management will replace him with someone who is just like him … so there probably won’t be any real change.”
“Good riddance,” said a network correspondent. “For a while there it seemed like he was running the network. This clearly is a message that he’s not. In the interim, it’s a morale boost, that’s for sure.”
[...]
Abby Grossberg, a former Carlson producer who alleged she was coached to give misleading testimony in her deposition for the Dominion case, filed her own lawsuit against the network, alleging Carlson’s senior staff regularly held discussions about women in sexist terms, often invoking the term “cunt.”
Semafor reported that Carlson’s executive producer, Justin Wells, is also no longer with the network. Wells was also named in Grossberg’s suit.
“This is a step towards accountability for the election lies and baseless conspiracy theories spread by Fox News, something I witnessed firsthand at the network, as well as for the abuse and harassment I endured while Head of Booking and Senior Producer for Tucker Carlson Tonight. I think this is great for America!” Grossberg said through her attorney. “It’s a big win for viewers of cable news, not just those who watch Fox.” Grossberg added that the move was “some justice” for viewers “who’ve been manipulated and lied to for years, all in an attempt to boost the channel’s ratings and revenue.”
U.S. District Court Judge Mary Kay Vyskocil ruled on Thursday that McDougal failed to prove that Carlson was accusing her of an actual crime in a way that would back up a defamation claim. The judge said that lawyers for Fox "persuasively" argued that "any reasonable viewer 'arrive[s] with an appropriate amount of skepticism' about the statements" Carlson makes, according to a court filing.
The judge called the on-air remarks "rhetorical hyperbole and opinion commentary intended to frame a political debate, and as such, are not actionable as defamation," the judge said in a written ruling.
In an email to The Associated Press, McDougal zeroed in on the part of the ruling that found her claim didn't meet the legal standard showing there was malice by Carlson.
"I believe reporting something you know is a lie as 'news' or 'undisputed facts' is the very definition of malicious," she wrote.
A statement from Fox called the decision a victory both for the network and "all defenders of the First Amendment."
McDougal has said she had an affair with Trump in 2006 and 2007. He denied it.

Assuming an insurance company covers a payout of this magnitude, an organization’s premiums go way, way up, particularly if the organization doesn’t eliminate their riskiest liabilities: i.e., those who totally refuse to reign in the extremist rhetoric that triggered the first payout.
Fox got away with a lot for a long time because they presented themselves as entertainment, but it got harder to argue that point when they promoted an idea that was factually untrue (stolen election) and led to treason (storming the capital). They need to reduce the risk of similar suits going forward.

I don't think Carlson was trying to get fired. He clearly thought he was untouchable. Had it not been for some of the emails in the Dominion suit and the Grossman suit, he'd still be there.
Being a crass misogynist doesn't bring you down at Fox as long as you make money for the network. The culture hasn't changed an iota since O'Reilly and Ailes were shown the door when lawsuits threatened the stock price.
A couple of things from the reporting today that stuck out:
1). supposedly Lachlan Murdoch was unaware of Carlson's January 6 false flag "documentary" Patriot Purge until after it was broadcast. That show was promoted for at least a week before it was broadcast, so how could Murdoch claim ignorance unless he's acting like an absentee landlord?
2). Among his other crass comments, I heard on NPR that Carlson made some "inappropriate remarks" about his daughter. How Trumpy of him.

R323 Nope - never heard of this at all.
Where does that leave the 1976 movie, "A Star Is Born"? The two black female singers who sang back-up for Streisand in some of the scenes were called "The Oreos'. It looks like from now on, those two will forever be regarded as having adopted the attitudes, values, and behavior thought to be characteristic of middle-class white society, often at the expense of their own heritage.
by Anonymous | reply 338 | April 25, 2023 9:56 PM |
FOX isn't too worried IF they are legally ordered to pay off his contract. Carlson only had a few months left ; his lawyers were said to be starting negotiations in a couple of weeks to renew him until 2030. So if he had just a few months left, we're not talking much payout at less than $2M per month. (I believe his contract was expiring the end of June, from what's been rumored).
The file includes internal complaints regarding workplace conduct, disparaging comments about management and colleagues, and allegations that the now-former primetime host created a toxic work environment, three of the sources say. (Carlson is currently facing a lawsuit from a former senior booking producer, Abby Grossberg, alleging a toxic and misogynist workplace environment. The lawsuit details repeated instances of misogynist behavior at the network, including frequent lewd and sexual discussions of female guests and public figures. Grossberg, “continued to endure a work environment that subjugates women based on vile sexist stereotypes, typecasts religious minorities and belittles their traditions, and demonstrates little to no regard for those suffering from mental illness.” Fox denied the allegations when the lawsuits were filed, saying the claims were “without merit.”)

Reading through this thread - overall, Carlson sounds like a nasty little fuck who had it coming. We'll never know the full extent of what went on behind the scenes but it sounds like it was a host of incremental factors that finally added up and now it's costing Fox big dollars. He's shit in his own bed and has lost his access to a massive audience. The rusted on audience might huff and puff and may even follow him to wherever he's going next but it won't stick. They'll all return to Fox News in time. He must have been such a liability and out of control cannon that they wouldn't give him a final show in case of what might have happened. Not sad. Like all the so-called Reagan Republicans who ended up supporting Trump, regardless that he was the anathema of their own political ideology and void of any human decency, they found that power and wealth superseded basically everything, dismissing any remaining moral compass they may have had, even though they understood the harm it did to the fabric of the United States. I bet the Tucker Carlson from 25 years ago would have been horrified to see what he evolved into in today's world. Whether or not he actually believes the garbage he spews to his viewers daily doesn't matter. The harmful end result is still the same.

(It bottomed out at 45% during the Biden administration’s first winter, and rose in the most recent poll to 48%.)

Beyond social issues, Carlson slammed military leaders for supporting Ukraine’s fight against Russian invaders. In almost the same breath, he accused generals of trying to weaken the U.S. military and drum up war with China. ...
Carlson mattered more to national security than most in Washington want to acknowledge. Where he led, conservatives follow. Over the past few years, Gallup has found rising support for Russia and less for Ukraine; more support for Israel and less for Palestinians; more support for border security and less for Mexico; and so on. In the Reagan Forum poll, Trump voters saw China as the top threat, while Biden voters pointed to Russia.

No, tax cuts for the rich isn't actually a way to restrict corporate power. No, investigating Huner Biden won't limit corporations in any way. One actual provision to limit corporate power or the power of people who run corporations would be interesting, but it has to actually cost some billionaire money or power or it's all just bullshit.

If Newsweek thinks Fox lost out big time by dropping him, why don't they take him on? That's right, no other conservative "news" outlet will because it's obvious he was let go for being a big liability. You won't see a single one put their money where their mouth is.
I don't think he'll go into politics either. None of these guys ever do, which should be a big hint to the public about their real intentions. They aren't into politics like that. They are nothing but modern day circus barkers. I doubt they believe half the shit they spew. I'm sure we can all recall when Limbaugh, at the height of his fame, ranted about all the low life, American junkie parasites (aka Americans middle class or lower), popping pills and living high on the hog with welfare payments... Only for it to be later revealed that he was actually a pill popping junkie... known character traits amongst conservatives -- projection and hypocrisy!
And the audience doesn't care. That's the one thing "Face in the Crowd" gets wrong -- today's audience will defend them. Yeah they'll lose interest when the next new face appears, but that's different than admitting their former hero was a monster.

[bold] Maria Bartiromo and Jeanine Pirro, two longtime hosts and Donald Trump allies, have told friends they’re concerned they could be sacked next, [/bold] according to two sources familiar with the situation.
According to people with knowledge of the matter, executives have recently held high-level discussions about Fox Business host Bartiromo’s future at the company. In recent years, the host became a mouthpiece for Trump, propping up conspiracy theories and peddling lies about the 2020 election. Those falsehoods found their way into a Dominion Voting Systems filing in the company’s mega-lawsuit against Fox. The filing pointed to Bartiromo’s Nov. 8 interview with Trump-aligned attorney, Sidney Powell, to discuss “voting irregularities” — on-air programming that contrasted sharply with the host’s Dominion deposition statements, in which Bartiromo said the email underpinning Powell’s claims was “nonsense.”
Pirro, an ardent Trump supporter whose claims about election fraud were highlighted by Dominion in its legal filings, has also been telling confidants she’s worried she’ll be shown the door, according to one of the people familiar with the situation.
It’s not just hosts who are anxious. Other sources at and close to the network say that, in the wake of Carlson’s ouster, some Fox brass have grilled certain staff about whether they or their teams had recently blabbed to the press about Carlson’s abrupt dismissal.
The grilling has not stopped a steady stream of Carlson-related leaks, and Fox staff are taking steps to avoid getting caught communicating without outside sources. Several staffers have taken additional measures to shield their communications with outside media, changing journalist contacts to fake names in case they receive a call in the presence of management or “their spies,” as one Fox employee describes. (By “spies,” the employee was referring to personnel suspected of “snitch[ing]” to upper management about their colleagues’ alleged infractions in order to climb the ladder.)
While the tension inside the building rises, the network’s ratings — Fox News’ perpetual rebuttal to criticism — have declined sharply. On Wednesday, when guest host Brian Kilmeade slid into Carlson’s former chair, he drew 1.33 million viewers, down 56 percent from Tucker’s draw a week earlier, according to the Associated Press. Kilmeade’s numbers also put the network in an unfamiliar position: Second, behind liberal-leaning MSNBC.
[...]
In the days since, the reported explanations for the sudden termination have included issues connected to the settled, wildly expensive Dominion-Fox lawsuit, the Abby Grossberg allegations, and an alleged plethora of so-far unpublished and “highly offensive” remarks Carlson made about network senior staff that triggered a “crisis” among the board of directors, according to The New York Times. Moreover, The Wall Street Journal reported that Fox News attorneys had discovered “the time he called a senior Fox News executive the c-word.” ...
But for now, it’s unclear where Fox’s onetime superstar will head next. Carlson was booted from the channel with a committed following that, to some extent or another, appears ready to go where he leads them. The coveted 8 p.m. time slot at Fox News helped grant Carlson not just to a level of media prominence, but one of actual political and policy influence in the GOP elite. His preferences could help Republican primary campaigns get over the finish line. During and following the Trump presidency, Carlson has had the ear of the leader of the Republican Party. And for years of Tucker Carlson Tonight’s run, powerful conservative lawmakers on Capitol Hill “lived in fear” — as numerous Fox sources, political operatives, and GOP members of Congress have phrased it — that the host would come after them during his evening broadcast. At times, these politicians would bend over backwards simply to appease Carlson’s whims and grievances.

^^^
Whatever the cause of the ouster, the news of it broke suddenly. On Monday morning, the minutes in between Carlson being informed he was out and Fox’s public announcement of his firing were so few that some of his close family members found out about it from the news, not from him, according to two people with knowledge of the matter.
