Best cast album for 'A Little Night Music' ?

'A Little Night Music' is my favorite musical of all time. There's been a number of productions since the Broadway premiere in 1973 which have released cast recordings, plus the 1977 movie / soundtrack recording. Which is your favorite cast /soundtrack recording ? If you've seen it on stage, which was your favorite production ? If there was another revival, who would you want to star as Desiree ?

My favorite cast recording is 1975 - London - Jean Simmons.

I love the 1995 London revival. Judi Dench is fantastic.

Hate to be a contrarian, but the most enjoyable listening experience for me is the 1989 recording with Sian Phillips and the sublime Elisabeth Welch.

For me, nothing could possibly replace the original cast album.

As a whole recording, I liked the Original Broadway Cast Recording the best.

However, on the movie soundtrack, I prefer "Weekend in the Country" as well as Diana Rigg as Charlotte.

I do think that Judi has the best SITC

I've listened to the Judi Dench album a number of times, because everyone said she's the best. I thought it was 'ok'. Never heard the Sian Phillips recording (didn't know it existed) until now - not impressed. Never liked the OBC with Glynis Johns (though everyone says it's their favorite).

My favorite has been Jean Simmons, though I agree with R6 - that's the best 'Weekend In The Country' and Diana Rigg is incredible as Charlotte. Too bad the film was ruined with Liz Taylor (should have cast Simmons).

Have heard only the original cast album, which I loved. But I saw the London version with Judi Dench, who was marvelous.

This is in desperate need of a revival...but who could they cast ? It would have to be a 'name' for both Desiree and her mother.

The best idea almost happened but was tragically ended. Natasha Richardson and Vanessa Redgrave did a concert version together and by all accounts was definitive, with revival plans. Natasha was tragically killed.

I think Gwyneth and Blythe could have done it.

How's about A Little Night Mamie?

I remember back in 2000-01, Sondheim proposed a Broadway revival starring Glenn Close and Jeremy Irons. It dragged for a while, then around 2003 it was said Sondheim had decided on new movie version of the musical, starring Close. Then the project fizzled out.
