Terrible.
Maybe a stupid question, but when the US went through its inflationary crisis in the 70s and early 80s (or was it just the 70s), what happened in the long run? Did prices eventually go down, or did they just plateau and then eventually many people eventually made more money as to "catch up" with inflation?

This isn’t new news. It’s been going on for MANY, MANY years, & other countries in S. America are experiencing the same, or far worse.
And, YES. We as the United States, cannot claim that we didn’t start the fire, because we most CERTAINLY did.
This is why I’m baffled by GOPers who constantly bitch about immigration from countries south of our border.
Umm, guess what? They’re flocking here by the hundreds of thousands in droves yearly, because we explicitly caused economic conditions in their countries, that are tied to long standing economic ramifications, that FORCE them to do so. You honestly believe people want to spend weeks to months making it into shithole TX? GTFOH. IF COURSE THEY DO. It’s ALL relative.
Almost ANYTHING is better than what they have, which is literally next to NOTHING.
The “War on Drugs” NEVER existed, however, the war on brown people did, & still does. And yes, I understand that most Argentinians were once, majority white, but skin color isn’t what this is about.
America will fuck anyone over, of any skin color, when just the “right” corrupt, American assholes are in power.
Also, as an aside, Argentinians are usually almost always GORGEOUS, & know how to party, well. 👍🏽

When is it not? It would be actual news if Argentina's economy was doing well. They have fucked themselves over severely and the worst part is there isn't much they can do about it anymore.

The economist Simon Kuznets once famously said, "There are four kinds of countries: developed countries, underdeveloped countries, Japan, and Argentina." They went bankrupt eight times already with another bankruptcy just around the corner, and the ruling party is whining about the Falklands again because the election is in October.

By about 1930's Argentina was one of the most wealthy countries in world. Phrase such as "Rich as an Argentine" or "Argentina potencia" were once common and referred to the South American nation who at that time was wealthy and growing in power. By 1950's or so this all changed with arrival of Juan Peron (husband of Evita Peron).
The Perons made lots of economic promises to the less fortunate which of course got them votes. When Peron governments couldn't deliver they just printed money, something that has pretty much gone on ever since.
As anyone with even an elementary understanding of economics should know when governments print money inflation usually occurs. This is basically what has made Argentina an economic basket case.
Imagine living in a country where to buy say house or any other large purchase requires basically crate loads of money. One Argentine Peso is worth 0.0046 USD at current exchange rates. Prices aren't stable; something has one price in a shop say when it opens in morning, but it may be higher by afternoon or next day.

Argentina is still deeply homophobic. There's a gay storyline on a telenovela currently airing in Argentina. For the first time the gay characters are protagonists, and they actually get to kiss. It's kinda groundbreaking. Anyways, many people are saying they won't watch due to the gay storyline. It didn't get better when two of the actors confirmed they're in a relationship. I swear I have never seen so many homophobic comments. 90 % were probably homophobic. What pisses me off is that Argentina has major issues, like with poverty and inflation. The homophobes should worry about that instead of two guys loving each other.

r43 I am familiar with their Twitter accounts and the female content is there because they're trying to increase the exposure of their OnlyFans channel. It's a weird marketing strategy, but it works. This is very complex, I don't really have the time to get into it, but it basically boils down to retweeting OnlyFans stuff all day long, from whatever source.
And yes, a couple of them, like Kito Shelby and ViktorOnee, are bisexual, but they're definitely not G4P.

Very long story short Argentina has been an economic basket case for decades. They keep borrowing money from IMF which of course has to be repaid with interest. Because Argentine economy never seems to remain healthy for long it's always back to disaster mode.
Currently there is a drought in Argentina that is affecting one of their chief exports; agriculture.

R2: Prices didn’t go down. In a modern economy, prices almost never go down by much or for long periods of time. When they do, it’s called deflation, which is a dangerous thing for the economy. The last time prices fell significantly over time was in the early 1930s, during a deflationary spiral. We know how that turned out.
What happened after the 1979-81 period in the US is that inflation stabilized at a lower rate, falling to 3% in 1983 and staying in the 3-5% range throughout the '80s and '90s. Wages did rise very sharply during the inflation period to keep up with inflation.
Inflation was very low in the 2010s by historical standards, in the 1-2% range. This is one reason why the steep prices increases of the last 2 years have been so shocking. We're not used to it.
On topic: To put the Argentine inflation in perspective, the worst year for inflation in the US in modern times was 1980, when the inflation rate was 13.55%. That was considered catastrophic and undoubtedly was a major factor in putting Ronald Reagan in the White House. In February 2023, the year-over-year inflation rate in Argentine inflation was 103.5%

Argentina joined USA visa wavier scheme in 1996 and was removed in 2002. Uruguay joined in 1999 and was removed from visa waiver program in 2003.
In both instances economic unrest in respective countries was causing large numbers of "tourists" from both countries to arrive in USA but not leave (visa overstays). Instead they joined other "illegal aliens" seeking employment and otherwise setting up life in USA.

I don't think it's particularly homophobic. Of course, homophobes exist everywhere, but I really don't think it's an issue in the city. I haven't seen enough of the rest of the country to judge, but I'm sure it's like anywhere, more conservative in the more rural areas.
One thing I noticed since I arrived in the last days of summer...nearly all the men have skinny soccer player legs, so if you prefer a man with meaty calves and thighs, it's slim pickings. They are still hot, though.

I've never liked Argentina.
I think the people are loud, and obnoxious, and full of themselves.
They seem to think much more highly of themselves than they should.
The majority of them have European blood from Italy or Spain (or even Wales, believe it or not) because they immigrated to Argentina during the economic boom of the early 1900's.
At the same time, Argentina effectively wiped out its own indigenous Indian population, and expelled most of the blacks to Brazil.
Which explains why Argentinians are mainly white, as compared to the rest of South America.
So I'd say that Argentina is getting exactly what it deserves, for its past sins.
Oh, and Uruguay is to Argentina, as Canada is to the United States. A lesser, less populated, pale imitation.
That's pretty much all you need to know about those two countries.

No, R75/R76.
Both Argentina and Uruguay's indigenous population were exterminated by European colonizers, so there is not much of a mestizo population in either country, as compared to the rest of South America.
And there are almost no blacks to speak of, in either country.

On the 9th February 1935 in Buenos Aires, a polo match between a team of leading Argentine players and the touring British side. The British ambassador said he had never seen a social occasion quite like it. Even by the standards of Buenos Aires society, the gathering at the polo ground glittered. The Rolls and the Daimlers, the hampers from Harrods, the clothes, the diamonds, the crystal, the wines, the procession of nannies from England and France. The result of the match, oh yes, the home team won! But, as the British ambassador pointed out, that did not reflect badly on British horsemanship; three of the Argentine players were educated at Eton!

Most of the Latin and South American countries' economies have always been in shambles and many point the finger to the constructs of Spanish colonialism.
Spanish colonialism was one of wealth extraction, keeping large tracts of land and power among a small elite that was loyal to the Crown, and with limited voting or land-owning opportunities (usually tied together) for the masses.
It's still that way in almost all the countries - a very small, powerful corrupt elite and then the rest. Yes - I know there are corrupt American politicians and a wealthy elite that seem to be pulling the strings, but it's on a whole different level down there.

BUENOS AIRES, May 12 (Reuters) - Argentina's annual inflation rate soared to 𝟏𝟎𝟗% in April, the country's statistics agency said on Friday, smashing past analyst forecasts and stoking anger among hard-hit consumers who are increasingly having to skimp and save to get by.
The price spike has pushed one in four people into poverty in a country that has battled for decades with high inflation, along with cyclical debt and currency crises. Dwindling central bank reserves are now imperiling the government's finances.
"They've turned us into a country of beggars," Carlos Andrada, a 60-year-old self-employed worker, told Reuters. "One despairs because after working all your life, you have to fight just to get a tomato or a bell pepper," he said.

But Argentina has like 46 million people. America has 335 million. So there's probably more people unable to afford basic needs, but a not-insignificant lower percentage.

Ninety million people in the US live at below 200% poverty level. I use that level as basic because the US poverty line is ridiculously low in comparison to the cost of living at $12,800 per single person. Not much difference percentage-wise but America is galling because it could afford to have zero below the poverty line.

Our poor little Argentinian brothers. Always getting themselves in this kind of sitch.
Truth is they are a people with a flair for the dramatic - they are fanatic about political figures (cf. Perón), worshipping them like they would movie stars, while being collectively arrogant, clueless and completely delusional. They actually think they are THE greatest nation on Earth; unfortunately, they're really just a big bag of undereducated fools who don't have a peso to their name to buy a fajita. Everything is grand and epically disastrous, as there's too much emotion and too little rational thinking applied to everything in life.
Every time they fuck up economically or otherwise, they come running to Big Old Mama Brazil for help; we help them (by sending zillions in aid), then they go back to their default setting of bad-mouthing us, as they have done so historically. In practice, it's hardly a blip on our radar, but it sure is annoying, when we remember they exist.
Their national anthem starts with "Hear, mortals, the sacred cry". You, the non-Argentines, are the mortals, in case you didn't get that.
I do feel sorry for them, and don't like to see their people suffer. However, there's the "reaping what you sow" part. You cannot deliberately turn your country into a fuckfest and then go "Woe is me"; "Foreigners, come fix it".
Tragic. I wish them well (and I say this with no snark).

R105 Brazilians calling Argentines arrogant. Ha! Especially after that post, hun.
As far as bad mouthing, I thought our only beef was the futebol?....seems you have a bit of a persecution complex. Most argentineans (like me) love brazilians as much as we love beating them in our shared favorite sport.
May I ask how you seem to have so much insight about us? Lived here for a bit? Or is it all just hearsay?
Now you did get part of the overdramatics and passion right (I find it an endearing trait, tbh, not to sound stereotypically "arrogant"), though half of the country loathes Peronism with just as much passion, including me. Hell you got most of it right. You even threw in a mostly genuine and only 40% passive aggresive wish for an improvement.
You do well in wishing that. Because, darling, if you knew one thing about Argentinean/Brazil economic relations you'd know there are few countries that depend on each other more economically than us. I would also wager you've knocked on our door for a cup of sugar just as much as we've knocked on yours. Sadly, your country being in a somewhat slightly economic situation hasnt done much for the violence and insecurity that plagues Brazilian cities. Being an English as a second language teacher with a majority of Brazilians students trying to elbow their way into the US and hearing the stories (a student of mine's mother was machete-d to death a couple of weeks ago, how's that for an incentive?), I grant you an invitation to knock on our door if you need to. We might not be able to spare so much in the way of sugar, but you can hide out with us for a bit. We're financial idiots, but were not trying to kill ourselves.

This morning, I picked up 3kg of their delicious Yerba Mate Rosamonte tea, which I ordered at a local tea shop. My arm almost fell off transporting that shit home. €37 it cost me, a slight increase from a year ago due to inflation here, the peso is still dirt cheap and it's still by far the cheapest tea around.
My point is, I don't give a flying fuck if Argentina falls apart. As long as they keep producing primo gay porn and my favourite tea at a reasonable price, it's all good.

R108, here's my insight: I've just sent some money to my Salvadoran-Argentinian ex-wife in Buenos Aires through Western Union. That was fifteen minutes ago. We're recent divorcees, and although she's well-employed and already working, she just went back to your/her country a couple of months ago and is still getting settled. The situation is dire, she asked for help, I'm happy to give it. As you can see, I don't deal in 'hearsay'.

Fantastic house, R86. The family for whom it was built were patrons of some of the grandest architecture in Argentina, a place not known for holding back on embellishment (this example is one of the restrained commissions.) This house was originally offered with an asking price of $10M USD; it's been for sale for some time now.
Buenos Aires has such an amazing architectural heritage, wonderful things from the late 19th and early 20thC in a range of classical and revival styles, some very correct, others more innovative or eccentric. Its size in spread and population (15.5M) means there are some great old neighborhoods and examples of urban planning and amenities, also some wonderfully preserved commercial spaces more than a century old and fairly untouched.
Argentina has been so tattered by financial crises, it's sad to see yet another deep one.

Reading through this thread reminded me of a passage from an interview with Argentine/Irish journalist Uki Goñi from 2014, so I looked it up:
JS: Would you say there’s some kind of collectivist mentality then?
UG: A collectivist mentality, yeah. The best definition I ever read was by a Belgian war criminal who escaped to Argentina and lived here. Now actually, many of these Nazis were extremely cultured, well-read people. The thing about Nazis is that some of them were very intelligent—not all of them, but many. And this guy was a very smart guy. He was a writer, publishing a lot of books before becoming a Nazi collaborator, and he kept a diary of his life in Argentina, where he mixed with lots of Argentine nationalists and politicians. I had to travel to Belgium to get permission from the family to read and photocopy this diary. And in it, at one point—like you or I or anybody who’s been here more than eight days in a row—he starts trying to understand how the Argentine mind works. And he writes in his diary, “Argentines are fascists who don’t obey orders.” (Laughs) I thought that was the greatest definition.

Peron welcomed over 300 Nazi fugitives into Argentina. Many were the worst of lot and wanted for committing war crimes.

After World War Two, thousands of Nazis and wartime collaborators from France, Croatia, Belgium and other parts of Europe were looking for a new home: preferably as far away from the Nuremberg Trials as possible. Argentina welcomed hundreds if not thousands of them: the Juan Domingo Perón regime went to great lengths to get them there, sending agents to Europe to ease their passage, providing travel documents, and in many cases covering expenses.
Even those accused of the most heinous crimes, such as Ante Pavelic (whose Croatian regime murdered hundreds of thousands of Serbs, Jews and Romani people), Dr. Josef Mengele (whose cruel experiments are the stuff of nightmares) and Adolf Eichmann (Adolf Hitler's architect of the Holocaust) were welcomed with open arms. It begs the question: Why on Earth would Argentina want these men? The answers may surprise you.

You'll hear variations repeated a lot more as the election nears and the Treasury printing presses run full blast

This current bout of inflation HAS been transitory – it's already gone way down in the US, but has also eased a lot in the EU. We were dealing with historic levels of inflation here, obviously it's taken a year or so to tame it.
Or maybe you're just confused by the word "transitory", who the fuck knows with you deplorables anymore. Beats me why you're on DL in the first place.

I didn't vote for Milei, but he is not "far right"...he's right wing libertarian....which is better than the "law and order" more conservative bullshit like Bullrich or the same shit we've had for the last 20 years with Massa.
Man, please don't talk about shit you dont understand. Left wing FUCKING GOT US HERE.

No it hasn't. this past month CPI report: Energy prices are going back up, services (a huge category including rent, health services, transportation) is up, the only category that has stabilized (at 'nosebleed' prices) is food which is NOT going down.
This disinflation hype is coming from WallStreet and the media. Investors want the Fed to stop raising interest rates so they can have more free money like the good old days, the reason we're in this mess.

[quote]I love how Britain went from a global empire to squabbling over a rock in the Mediterranean and that penguin colony off Argentina. Couldn't have happened to a more deserving cunt of a country.
As an American, I am grateful every day that the British colonized this country instead of the Spanish.

He has also bragged about having threesomes ("90% were with two women") and being a tantric sex instructor.
