2023 Oscars - Annette Bening vs Jessica Lange

Who will win the Oscar for 2023? Annette Bening is starring in Nyad which will likely net her a fifth Oscar nomination. After having been lost for both American Beauty and Being Julia (both times against Hilary Swank despite being the audience favorite), will this finally be her year?

Or will Jessica Lange join the three-time Oscar winners club, matching Meryl Oscar for Oscar for Oscar, and win for Long Day's Journey Into Night, a role that not only won her a Tony but also made her the first American to ever earn a nomination for an Olivier Award?

Or perhaps Helen Mirren will pass both of them and win a 2nd Oscar for Golda?

by Anonymousreply 210May 20, 2023 7:02 PM

TOTAL THREAD /FAIL

Betty Buckley got an Olivier Award nomination for Sunset Blvd. in the ‘90s.

Oliviers don’t mean anything anyway.

by Anonymousreply 1April 13, 2023 8:12 AM

Tbh I read about Lange being the first American to get an Olivier nomination on DL so I just rolled with it.

by Anonymousreply 2April 13, 2023 8:16 AM

Jessica Lange is the best actress of her generation. I always want her to win whenever she is nominated for anything. However, in this case, Annette Bening deserves to win at least one time. Bening was robbed of the Oscar for 'American Beauty.' Give her this one.

by Anonymousreply 3April 13, 2023 8:16 AM

Interesting that all the performances cited are for either remakes or biographies. Originality in Hollywood is dead.

by Anonymousreply 4April 13, 2023 8:18 AM

None of these bitches will beat my record of 4 Lead Actress Oscars!

by Anonymousreply 5April 13, 2023 8:24 AM

Lange hasn't had a nomination since 1994 so this would be almost 30 years later. I wonder what the largest gap is between Oscar nominations.

by Anonymousreply 6April 13, 2023 8:24 AM

I think it is Henry Fonda r6

by Anonymousreply 7April 13, 2023 8:26 AM

R7 for acting nominations yes. But I think he was a producer for 12 Angry Men so he got a nomination for Best Picture for that. That would be only a 24 year gap if we're including that nomination.

by Anonymousreply 8April 13, 2023 8:27 AM

[quote]Or will Jessica Lange join the three-time Oscar winners club, matching Meryl Oscar for Oscar for Oscar, and win for Long Day's Journey Into Night, a role that not only won her a Tony but also made her the first American to ever earn a nomination for an Olivier Award?

Stockard Channing nominated in 1993

Zoe Wanamaker nominated in 1996

Jennifer Ehle nominated in 2000

Jessica Lange in 2001 (Julie Walters won)

by Anonymousreply 9April 13, 2023 8:32 AM

Susan Sarandon never managed to get another nomination since 1995 when she won on her 5th attempt.

Michelle Pfeiffer never got another nomination after 1992.

Sigourney Weaver never got another nomination after 1988.

Emma Thompson never got a nomination after 1995.

Glenn Close was lucky that after 1988 with Dangerous Liaisons, although she suffered from a long dry spell, she finally got another nomination in 2011 followed by two more nominations since.

by Anonymousreply 10April 13, 2023 8:56 AM

Lange has not exactly been dazzling us with movie performances that haven’t been recognized. Benning has done some regular good work over the years, i am team Benning here. Also, i saw Journeys Night live many years ago with Lange and wasn’t vowed , it is of course perfect for her bag of tricks (and oh so boring).

by Anonymousreply 11April 13, 2023 8:59 AM

I hope Lange is nominated and Bening wins. Mama Lange is a Triple Crown of Acting winner, unlike many, and has already proven herself an icon, legend, and iconoclast. Besides, Nettie has deserved everything for quite some time. And I’m certainly not like certain obnoxious fans who foam at the mouth over lesser talents.

by Anonymousreply 12April 14, 2023 4:55 AM

R1 Lange was the first American to score an Olivier nomination for Best Actress in a Play. Sunset Blvd. is a musical.

by Anonymousreply 13April 14, 2023 5:09 AM

I'm quietly wishing that Hilary Swank has a secret project in the works that gets dropped right before the end of the year, gets nominated and wins her third Oscar.

by Anonymousreply 14April 14, 2023 5:26 AM

A couple of super butch masculine performances by an actress that Bening went up up against TWICE and lost was such unfortunate luck. Struck by lighting twice.

by Anonymousreply 15April 14, 2023 5:36 AM

I consider myself blessed for having met both of them. They are both really nice women. Anette came in with her daughter to shop in a small boutique in which I worked in NYC. She seemed like a dotting mother and was lightly admonishing her daughter who was being a bit of a brat at the time. We exchanged looks like, "kids these days..." while I was helping the both of them. Jessica used to train at David Barton gym in NYC with a personal trainer. We would pass each other all the time and she would smile. I passed her a yoga mat once. I consider that meeting! ha!.

by Anonymousreply 16April 14, 2023 6:06 AM

I've always loved Annette. She should have won for The Grifters above all.

by Anonymousreply 17April 14, 2023 6:13 AM

[quote]A couple of super butch masculine performances by an actress that Bening went up up against TWICE and lost was such unfortunate luck. Struck by lighting twice.

Coming soon: Two time Academy Award® winner Hilary Swank stars in "Cancer is Funny: the Tig Notaro Story".

by Anonymousreply 18April 14, 2023 6:15 AM

I'm very interested to see her play against Jodie Foster. They both push such an alpha color. I'm curious who will come off with as the top.

by Anonymousreply 19April 14, 2023 6:23 AM

Isn't Julia Roberts in Leave The World Behind supposed to be making a play for her second Oscar. Netflix paid a ton for the book rights like 120m for the production.

by Anonymousreply 20April 14, 2023 6:33 AM

OP and others - have any of these movies been released yet?

by Anonymousreply 21April 14, 2023 7:14 AM

[quote] I wonder what the largest gap is between Oscar nominations.

R6, this year Jud Hirsch was nominated for the second time, 42 years after his first.

by Anonymousreply 22April 14, 2023 7:15 AM

R21 only Leave The World Behind has a release date of 12/08/23. It's gonna be a Netflix big Oscar contender.

by Anonymousreply 23April 14, 2023 7:23 AM

Right, so thanks OP for confirming that the Oscars are a popularity contest and no longer have anything to do with the actual performance, if people are talking about performances that nobody has seen yet.

by Anonymousreply 24April 14, 2023 7:27 AM

R24 Netflix will be very much behind Julia Roberts.

by Anonymousreply 25April 14, 2023 7:33 AM

Annette Bening Jessica Lange Julia Roberts

Queens. Imagine them in an awards season

by Anonymousreply 26April 14, 2023 7:41 AM

But isn't Julia Roberts owed a second Oscar?

by Anonymousreply 27April 14, 2023 8:01 AM

Julia has no chances whatsoever. She's lucky she got one Oscar in the first place and nobody is pushing to nominate her again.

by Anonymousreply 28April 14, 2023 8:34 AM

R16 You lucky pip, you!

by Anonymousreply 29April 14, 2023 10:22 AM

Some up and coming POC actress. Not these old white dinosaurs that Show BUSINESS doesn't need.

by Anonymousreply 30April 14, 2023 10:46 AM

So let’s do away with looking at performances at all, and just decide these awards, in advance, based upon 1) race; 2) gender and 3) Academy guilt if a potential recipient has been overlooked in the past and is “deserving”.

by Anonymousreply 31April 14, 2023 10:53 AM

[R27] Julia Roberts didn't even deserve her first Oscar for that watered-down Norma Rae/Silkwood performance. She needs to return that Oscar to Ellen Burstyn.

by Anonymousreply 32April 14, 2023 11:39 AM

Meryl will also extend her "dry spell" without nominations next year to 7 years!

I kinda hope Jessica wins, her movie seems to be a labor of love.

by Anonymousreply 33April 14, 2023 1:26 PM

Jessica’s film was shut down because the money ran out.

by Anonymousreply 34April 14, 2023 2:14 PM

Michelle Pfeiffer and Annette were announced to be starring in a film right before the pandemic happened. Annette plays a psychiatrist going through dementia who kills her friend played by Michelle, I think. It sounded interesting.

by Anonymousreply 35April 14, 2023 2:16 PM

[quote] I'm very interested to see her play against Jodie Foster.

Annette or Jessica?

by Anonymousreply 36April 14, 2023 2:16 PM

Is there even a trailer for “ Long Day's Journey Into Night” yet? Why would you think this film would even be considered?

by Anonymousreply 37April 14, 2023 2:18 PM

R37 because it's the first big adaption in 61 years of a play that's considered one of the finest in American history, plus Jessica got some of the best reviews of her career when she played the role on stage. Not saying the movie will be a big hit but Jessica will get attention no doubt.

by Anonymousreply 38April 14, 2023 3:23 PM

R37 Per Gleb Fetisov, one of the producers whose work includes producing the 2017 Cannes Jury Prize winning Loveless, it’s premiering at TIFF this fall, with a subsequent wide release already slated. I doubt we’ll get a trailer before then.

by Anonymousreply 39April 14, 2023 6:00 PM

R36 - Annette. Isn't she playing the lesbian lover in Nyad?

I doubt Jessica will be nominated. It’s a low budget production and uses all the original text from the 1950’s play. It would have to be an incredibly weak year for her to be nominated.

by Anonymousreply 42April 14, 2023 9:50 PM

R41 Who was the first?

by Anonymousreply 43April 15, 2023 3:52 AM

R42 It’s also been radically reshaped, which could prove triumphant, in which case she gets the nod, or disastrous, in which case she may still get the nod, if her performance is as beloved as her 2000 and 2016 Mary Tyrone turns.

by Anonymousreply 44April 15, 2023 3:54 AM

Lange and that hideous fucking ruined face? I don't think so. Cant play anything but an old drunk BITCH anymore

by Anonymousreply 57April 15, 2023 6:22 AM

Doubt Lange will get nominated for the latest adaptation of that now very creaky old play that still plays well in theatre but not in cinema.

Anyone watch Hepburn's film recently?

I saw it years ago and loved it, however on a recent repeat viewing I was shocked at how badly it had aged. And the problem lied with the material.

It is going to have to be a really weak year for Lange to sneak through.

by Anonymousreply 58April 15, 2023 6:51 AM

I believe next year's nominees will be Lange, Bening, Mirren, Winslet, and either Natalie Portman or Julianne Moore depending on who has the better role in the Todd Haynes movie they're doing together.

by Anonymousreply 59April 15, 2023 7:26 AM

I forgot that Cate Blanchett is also a contender.

Glenn's Sunset Boulevard will earn her an Oscar

by Anonymousreply 65April 15, 2023 7:59 AM

[quite] both times against Hilary Swank despite being the audience favorite

Annette Bening has never been anyone’s favorite.

by Anonymousreply 66April 15, 2023 8:06 AM

R65 That project is never happening and if it does I have been privately promised the part.

by Anonymousreply 67April 15, 2023 8:07 AM

R67 By whom? Your old benefactor Harvey Weinstein? Who you conveniently never knew any stories of, even though I did just by listening to my makeup artists, despite never having had worked with him? The same man you warned your daughter to stay away from?

by Anonymousreply 68April 15, 2023 8:37 AM

A play called The Unfriend is finishing its run in London about an uptight middle class couple who meet a brash American on a cruise and tell her to visit when she's next in London. So the brash American invites herself to stay, the couple are too politely middle class to tell her they don't want her to visit and then find out she's a serial killer. HILARITY ENSUES.

The play is a lot better than my description but Elsa Jean Krakowski, the brash American, is an amazing part and Meryl/Glenn/Jessica/Annette would kill for the role in the inevitable film adaptation.

by Anonymousreply 69April 15, 2023 8:37 AM

R69 They are all too old. I'll take the part thanks.

by Anonymousreply 70April 15, 2023 9:20 AM

We need Streep, Lange, and Close in a film.

by Anonymousreply 71April 15, 2023 9:34 AM

I wonder if Anne Hathaway will get any accolades for that lesbian movie she's doing that debuted at Sundance.

by Anonymousreply 72April 15, 2023 11:07 AM

GOD, please no nominations for Cate this next awards season! I think she is incredibly talented, but I got really tired of seeing her everywhere last winter pushing TAR.

by Anonymousreply 73April 15, 2023 11:27 AM

[quote][R69] They are all too old. I'll take the part thanks.

Dame Frances Barber originated the role and she's 65. Looking at American actors of the same name Holly Hunter would be a great choice.

by Anonymousreply 74April 15, 2023 11:29 AM

R74, i like Holly Hunter, but a midget serial killer isn’t ideal casting outside of a b horror movie.

by Anonymousreply 75April 15, 2023 11:55 AM

R59 I don't see Mirren as a contender. Golda got very tepid reviews and her casting was controversial.

by Anonymousreply 79April 15, 2023 2:34 PM

R76 The Oscars don't like Mirren very much anyway. In her whole career, she only has 4 nominations whereas Maggie Smith and Vanessa Redgrave both have 6 noms and Judi Dench has 8. The SAG Awards really love Mirren though, she has a lot of nominations from them.

by Anonymousreply 80April 16, 2023 3:38 AM

It must be so tragic to be unable to see beyond the narrow parameters of race. The real racist here is you R77.

by Anonymousreply 81April 16, 2023 4:53 AM

R80 I guess Helen didn't get many standout movies roles, at least not ones that would be nominated, til her career soared with Prime Suspect. Then she got those 4 nominations in 15 years, including one meh one - "The Last Station". Kinda similar to Dame Judi, respected but not really a household name til later in her career.

While she's likely come close to a nomination a couple of times since - "Hitchcock" & ""Trumbo", she wasn't snubbed really. She needs to look for or produce better roles in good movies like "The Duke" & "Eye In The Sky" instead of wasting her talent on shite like "Collateral Beauty" or "Winchester".

She would have been great (as Charlotte was) in "45 Years". I've recently rewatched some old Prime Suspect and she is brilliant with the right director and good writing.

by Anonymousreply 82April 16, 2023 10:01 AM

Maybe Helen will get her 5th acting nomination for Barbie?

by Anonymousreply 83April 16, 2023 10:46 AM

She's on the narrator R83. I actually hope that Barbie movie is brilliant!

by Anonymousreply 84April 16, 2023 10:56 AM

Seeing as Jessica has been a giant failure outside of TV. I don’t see any hope of her being nominated.

Offsite Link
by Anonymousreply 85April 16, 2023 3:46 PM

R85 Your painfully desperate needs to see Lange fail and tear her down aside (it’s pathological at this point; seek help), half, if not most, of the industry thrives on comebacks. And she’s had a few. This’ll be another.

by Anonymousreply 86April 16, 2023 4:55 PM

Unfortunately, she has a really dark energy. It’s no surprise she is continuously flopping.

by Anonymousreply 87April 16, 2023 4:57 PM

R85 R87 look at any women from her generation (with the Streep exception). All of them have had multiple movies that have made piddling little back. Some might have been lucky to have the occasional hit. Sarandon, Keaton, Worst, Weaver, Close etc have all been sidelined since their "heyday".

Jessica Lange does not "need" AHS. She, and older actresses in general, need good scripts, promotion and wider releases so their movies find an audience.

by Anonymousreply 88April 16, 2023 5:05 PM

That article at R85 is stupid. Lange left AHS several years ago and moved on. Why would a flop film in which she was not the lead or even second lead, convince her to return? She's been in a state of semi-retirement for years now and she likes it that way.

by Anonymousreply 89April 16, 2023 6:10 PM

[...]

by Anonymousreply 90April 16, 2023 6:19 PM

Jessica is hard to cast. Even this new film almost ran out of financing. She’s known as being difficult to work with and that the project will likely lose money since audiences have no interest in her.

She seems obsessed with this role despite playing it many times before on stage. I don’t think she has to go back to AHS, but it does suit her sour personality.

by Anonymousreply 91April 16, 2023 6:29 PM

R91 She’s anything but sour. She’s solitary yet altruistic and extremely generous. What she isn’t is pretentious, and she certainly doesn’t play Hollywood’s bullshit games. She works when she wants to, and will do so even as a favor to a friend or someone she respects, as she’s done with most of her post-AHS work, like The Vow (she did this for Suscy, with whom she has another project in the pipeline), Wild Oats (she did this purely for MacLaine), The Gambler (to work with Wahlberg), The Politician (for Murphy, which resulted in her turning down Tarantino’s offer), and Marlowe (for Jordan and Neeson).

by Anonymousreply 92April 16, 2023 7:02 PM

Sure, whatever you want to believe.

by Anonymousreply 93April 16, 2023 7:06 PM

Jessica is not difficult to work with. She is difficult to hire. She has said "no" to too many projects and it takes a lot of convincing for her to say "yes." And by that time, producers and casting agents have moved on to actresses her age who will say "yes" to anything.

Lange tends to gravitate to big, juicy roles with heavy emotional weight. But she's aged out of most of those roles, and when they do come and to her liking, they're usually in small, character-driven indies with minimal financing and limited audience appeal.

by Anonymousreply 94April 16, 2023 7:13 PM

I am not her biggest fan, but article at r85, is ridiculous. It keeps mentioning American Horror Story as if it is a relevant show today. My guess is that she is not very invested in making q good come back and works occasionally sionally for specific projects.

by Anonymousreply 95April 16, 2023 8:04 PM

Why would working with Mark Wahlberg be on her "to do" list?

by Anonymousreply 96April 16, 2023 8:09 PM

I don’t believe for a second that Jessica is turning down big parts. I think these crappy little films are the only things being offered to her.

by Anonymousreply 97April 16, 2023 8:12 PM

I think Lange has handled her career with a great deal of integrity. She is probably a bit difficult to cast. She was a beautiful and sexual woman but she never gave off an easy, available type of sexuality. She is rather dark and complicated and projects intelligence. At times, neurosis. or maybe an underlying turbulence. That's what I like about her. I think she is respected in the industry, especially by other actors. She can be a bit mannered for some people's tastes but some of the remarks in this thread are downright mean spirited and cringeworthy and don't reflect so well on the character of the posters who made them. Get a grip, boys/girls/whatever. Your cuntiness is off putting and unattractive.

by Anonymousreply 98April 16, 2023 8:24 PM

Was she offered "POMS"?

by Anonymousreply 99April 16, 2023 8:27 PM

People like her, it’s more off putting that her fans make up stories about her. Like she is in demand but only does charity work for her idol Mark Wahlberg.

Which is not how I see Mary Tyrone. She is a morphine addict, who reminisces about her past as a pious Catholic school girl desiring to be a nun or a concert pianist, but gave up that dream when she fell in love with James Tyrone. As the wife of a traveling actor, she feels she's failed at providing her family a decent home. Whatever pride she had in herself evaporated years ago. She is a mess.

by Anonymousreply 104April 17, 2023 4:10 AM

R96 “Mark’s a wonderful actor. I mean, I’ve always loved his work. And that’s partly the reason I did this, because it’s a very small role for me, but I wanted to work with him. And, like I said, the script I found intriguing, [and] I wanted to work with Rupert [Wyatt, the director].”

by Anonymousreply 105April 18, 2023 9:31 PM

R100 No one is insisting that Lange is “in demand.” By the same token, she isn’t desperate for and pining away due to a lack of offers either, unlike like what the Lange-hating oaf continues to suggest. She works if and when she wants to and always has.

by Anonymousreply 106April 18, 2023 9:35 PM

The racist troll is a racist and a troll. But from a strictly handicapping, Vegas-bet standpoint this whole thread is ignoring the Oscars So White/GimmeGimmeGimme factor. None of these women have a chance at winning that award, and it's not gonna be a big horse race between two of them.

R102 I'm actually really impressed by Hepburn there, thanks for posting. Good to see her not be "Katherine Hepburn". 1962 was a great year for "older" female stars.

I'm really not a fan of most of Katherine Hepburn but she is good in that scene especially in comparison to Langue, who in fact I am a big fan of.

Incidentally, did Joan ever mention who she thinks she should have been nominated instead of in 1962? Or just a general "I should be there too". Seems like 5 strong nominees:

Anne Bancroft for The Miracle Worker

Bette Davis for Baby Jane

Katherine Hepburn for Long Day's Journey Into Night

Geraldine Page for Sweet Bird Of Youth

Lee Dimmock for Days Of Wine And Roses

Also, Nicole Kidman (1999) is technically an American. She was born in Hawaii and has US citizenship since birth, in addition to Australian.

[quote]Best Actress

[quote]1. Fantasia Barrino, THE COLOR PURPLE

Oh, God, I would be shocked if this happened. I finally saw the musical The Color Purple about two weeks ago. It's truly dreadful. The performances were amazing, but the production is absolutely horrible. I walked out of the theater, thinking "I hope the hell they never make this into a movie". And then I looked on my phone and saw that filming was already complete, and it's being released in December.

It's such a terrible adaptation. The original movie was brilliant, and it was nominated for tons of Oscars, and it won none. I can't even imagine the musical version getting nominated.

I'm sure Fantasia Barrino will be excellent in it, but as a musical, it sucks.

The Miracle Club stars Maggie Smith, Kathy Bates, and Laura Linney. I'm curious if any of them could get a nomination, if not for Lead Actress then Supporting Actress. Laura Linney, especially, has long been overdue for an Oscar.

Meryl or Frances will win a fourth before the Academy will ever give one to Glenn or Nettie, or another to Jessica. #hashtag TRUTH.

[quote] Meryl or Frances will win a fourth before the Academy will ever give one to Glenn or Nettie, or another to Jessica. #hashtag TRUTH.

Frances, yes, the Academy likes her like they did Katharine Hepburn. And technically, Frances does have 4 Oscars. Her 4th one was for producing Nomadland.

Meryl's Oscar nominations have dried up since Weinstein was jailed. Not only that but the work has too. She doesn't get any plum roles anymore, especially not on the big screen.

by Anonymousreply 131April 20, 2023 1:57 AM

I wouldn’t count Meryl out for a fourth. She is still working steadily, and the Academy LOVES her and would definitely not be opposed to giving her a career-capping fourth before she dies. And Frances’ producing one doesn’t count. Neither do original song ones…looking at you Gaga and Billie Eyelash.

Many of these ladies are in their 70’s. People are dreaming to think they have Oscar chances.

[quote] I wouldn’t count Meryl out for a fourth. She is still working steadily, and the Academy LOVES her and would definitely not be opposed to giving her a career-capping fourth before she dies.

The Academy of old did which is why she got an Oscar nomination every other year just for sneezing. The Academy's voter base today is not the same one that existed as late as the mid 2010s. They have no love for Meryl which is evident in the lack of nominations. It's the reason movies like Parasite and Everything Everywhere All At Once have been able to emerge as winners over the typical Oscar bait and why Cate lost a chance at getting her 3rd Oscar to fresh blood like Michelle Yeoh.

by Anonymousreply 134April 20, 2023 2:07 AM

[quote] “I like the way you phrase that, that I finally got to work with Meryl Streep,” Stone said. “You didn’t say, ‘Meryl finally got to work with Sharon Stone.’ Or we finally got to work together…Because that’s the way her life went, she got built up to be, ‘Everyone wants to work with Meryl.’ I wonder if she likes that?” Stone continued, “The way you structured the question is very much the answer to the question. The business was set up that we should all envy and admire Meryl because only Meryl got to be the good one. And everyone should compete against Meryl. I think Meryl is an amazingly wonderful woman and actress. But in my opinion, quite frankly, there are other actresses equally as talented as Meryl Streep. The whole Meryl Streep iconography is part of what Hollywood does to women. Viola Davis is every bit the actress Meryl Streep is. Emma Thompson. Judy Davis. Olivia Colman. Kate Winslet, for fuck’s sake. But you say Meryl and everybody falls on the floor,” Stone added. “I’m a much better villain than Meryl, and I’m sure she’d say so. Meryl was not gonna be good in ‘Basic Instinct’ or in ‘Casino.’ I would be better. And I know it. And she knows it. The Everything Zoomer story adds: “‘But we’re all set up to think that only Meryl …’ – here Stone’s voice goes all breathy, and she stretches out her arms in an arabesque, left arm forward – ‘is so amazing …’ – right arm forward – ‘that when you say her name …’ – left arm forward – ‘it must have been amazing …’ – right arm – ‘for me to work …’ – left arm – ‘with her.' We’re all labeled the Queen of Something,” Stone said. “I’m the Queen of Smut! She’s the Queen of That! We all have to sit in our assigned seats. Are you kidding me? If we worked in a supermarket, she can’t always be the No. 1 checkout girl. We’re all doing our jobs. Everybody gets to get better, and everybody gets to sometimes have that not great a day. Even Meryl, we’ve been taught that everybody doesn’t get a seat at the table. Once one is chosen, nobody else can get in there.”

Ooh, she's 74 and has nothing in the pipeline right now. I thought for sure she'd have another 5 to 10 nominations before she was done because she's freaking MERYL STREEP!! I grew up expecting Meryl Streep to be nominated for an Academy Award every year for my entire life because that's basically what was happening!

But I'm not so sure. And another Oscar seems less and less likely. Which is a shame, because she deserved a few more than she got.

I've heard complaints about a Lange loon but all I see is that the real public menace is R166, the Streep loon.

Todd Field flat out said that he would only make Tar if Cate Blanchett was up to it, otherwise he wouldn't make it at all. Frances McDormand herself bought the rights to the book for Nomadland and approached Chloe Zhao to direct it. Cate and Nicole Kidman were offered the role of Lucille Ball in Being the Ricardos. The list goes on and on but all the recent high-profile female led movies were never offered to Meryl and for good reason. No one is interested in that dried up old cunt. That bitch isn't even in the running for this year so let's stop polluting this thread with her rancid name.

by Anonymousreply 168April 20, 2023 5:58 AM

Also one more reminder that Meryl having the most nominations but only 3 wins just means she's lost more times than all the other winners. Katharine Hepburn still stands supreme with 4 Oscar wins as a LEAD Actress and we all know what she felt about Meryl's "acting abilities."....click...click...click.

by Anonymousreply 169April 20, 2023 5:59 AM

Does anybody know what Michelle Williams' next movie is supposed to be? The Academy seems to be just be waiting for the right role to give her an Oscar and I'm positive she'll be nominated within the next 5 years for something. In contrast, Amy Adams seems to be someone the Academy doesn't mind nominating every so often but they don't really care all that much for.

by Anonymousreply 170April 20, 2023 6:01 AM

[quote]Amy Adams seems to be someone the Academy doesn't mind nominating every so often but they don't really care all that much for.

Amy Adams is this generation's Glenn Close. She'll probably get a couple more nominations, but she'll never get a win. Which is sad.

by Anonymousreply 171April 20, 2023 6:06 AM

R134 as others pointed out, Meryl has barely worked in lead roles since 2017 and nothing that would get her a nomination. There is no evidence to your claim the Academy has no interest in nominating her, they haven't had any opportunity.

Meryl was also a victim of her own success, she kept giving good performances and being nominated so much there was no impetus to reward her a third time as "there's always next time". That's part of the reason she won her third when she did, she'd come so close for Adaptation, Prada, Doubt and Julie & Julia.

Weinstein only produced a small amount of Meryl's movies, he worked much more with others and actually his campaigning cost Meryl a win several times (such as Winslet for The Reader). Still the trolls bang on like they had some close alliance

by Anonymousreply 172April 20, 2023 1:16 PM

Amy Adams could be up again this year for NIGHTBITCH.

by Anonymousreply 173April 20, 2023 1:23 PM

R169 actually it mean Meryl gave what the academy voters believed to be one of the 5 best performances in lead or supporting on 21 occasions. The fact that she didn't win just means that more voters went for someone else on 18 occasions. Same with Glenn in 8 different years. Yes a win is the best outcome but being nominated is really an honor too.

by Anonymousreply 174April 20, 2023 1:33 PM

Do you mean her awards for AHS? Hahaha 😝

by Anonymousreply 184April 21, 2023 4:22 AM

I've always gotten the vibe that Meryl has only seemed to be threatened by Kate Hepburn, Jessica Lange, Glenn Close and Julia Roberts. Hepburn for criticizing her, Jessica because she was beautiful and talented (unconvincingly overpraises her), Glenn because people often mentioned them in the same sentence in their careers (barely mentions her much) and although she probably looks down on Julia Roberts as a real "actor" she's uncomfortable by the big time movie superstar persona adoration that happened on her career path.

by Anonymousreply 185April 21, 2023 4:59 AM

What? Is this all your projection? What does Meryl even have to do with this thread? Is it because the other ladies can’t fill up a thread? Probably

by Anonymousreply 189April 21, 2023 5:13 AM

R185 I wouldn't say threatened. Meryl sometimes good overboard in her praise of others and self-depeication but I suspect she does this as she knows she gets put on a huge pedestal and it pisses many other actresses off.

by Anonymousreply 190April 21, 2023 8:57 AM

I don’t think Meryl gets too threatened by anyone else. I’m sure she has insecurities, but she comes off as pretty self-aware. And she seems to have a decent sense of humor and realizes that people get annoyed with the “greatest” praise she gets.

by Anonymousreply 191April 21, 2023 10:08 AM

No one's mentioned Anne Hathaway. She has not one but two plum roles this year. First, she's got Eileen which is described as the new Carol and Anne has gotten rave reviews for it so far. I can easily see the Academy recognizing her for this.

Then she also has Mothers' Instinct with Jessica Chastain. Both of them could be nominated for this but I think Anne has the meatier role as the mother whose son is killed and seeks revenge on Jessica's son. Jessica described this movie as akin to What Ever Happened to Baby Jane and Anne says this has been her hardest role yet. Perhaps Anne could score double nominations this year, one as a lead and one as supporting.

by Anonymousreply 193May 20, 2023 4:56 AM

R192 hi AnnE! I'll give you an alternative - The Academy completely ignores her like they've done for 10 years. How about that?

She's another example of someone rewarded once then they're done with you. And Sally Field & Helen Hunt were both more deserving in 2012. AnnE won because she was pushed endlessly and the other two had won before.

by Anonymousreply 194May 20, 2023 5:02 AM

[quote] The Academy completely ignores her like they've done for 10 years. How about that?

Anne hasn't had many great roles. Particularly not in the last 10 years where she's done absolutely nothing of quality since Les Misérables, which is why she didn't get any nominations. The only nominations she deserved were her multiple Razzies.

The two movies I mentioned above though are a lot closer to Oscar bait and seem way more promising which is why I think she could have a shot.

"A Streetcar Named Desire" was Jessica Lange's first foray into the legimate theater. Despite receiving the Theater World Award (1991-92) for it, she was criticized for being inaudible past the 3rd row. Her vocal techniques improved during the run, and when she performed it in London five years later, she got stellar reviews. She has since proved herself a more than capable stage actress, culminating in a Tony Award for the marathon "Long Days Journey Into Night." I don't know why people on here keep bringing up this inauspicious debut as if this somehow proves she is an unworthy actress.

by Anonymousreply 203May 20, 2023 6:04 AM

That is exactly why I'm certain Lange will win her 3rd Oscar because her Mary Tyrone is one of the most celebrated performances ever given by an actress. She will accomplish what even Katharine Hepburn could not do.

It is not a surprise to me that in the poll, she has the second most votes after Annette Bening.

by Anonymousreply 204May 20, 2023 6:06 AM

by Anonymousreply 205May 20, 2023 6:09 AM

Miss Lange is such a celebrated actress, that even without her vocals, the audience would have been able to ingest the full breadth of her acting through facial expressions and physical movement alone. I do not believe anyone in the audience would feel even slightly cheated of having missed out on a stellar performance.
