Richard Simmons
by Anonymous | reply 2 | April 10, 2023 2:03 AM |
James Dean, that’s rich.
by Anonymous | reply 3 | April 10, 2023 2:04 AM |
Friend of Dorothy
A fictional character played by Judy Garland gave gay men a charming euphemism by which to call themselves. Has anyone ever called you Friend of Evita or Friend of Loretta?
by Anonymous | reply 4 | April 10, 2023 2:05 AM |
Deb Messing
by Anonymous | reply 7 | April 10, 2023 2:07 AM |
It's unbelievable that Janet Jackson is even on that list. What a crock.
by Anonymous | reply 8 | April 10, 2023 2:11 AM |
So glad to see Judy winning. It still amazes me, how she was my favourite star, as a kid watching mgm movies on TV; to find out I was a clichė....and without any knowledge of the tragedy (often cited as to why we love Judy) I was drawn to her. I adore her so much I can't watch the Rene Z movie...u just can't watch it.
by Anonymous | reply 9 | April 10, 2023 2:12 AM |
It is odd how so many gay men found themselves drawn to Judy Garland. It usually started with The Wizard of Oz and went from there. It's probably that damn Over the Rainbow song. Maybe we were longing for that world where we'd be understood as well.
by Anonymous | reply 10 | April 10, 2023 2:23 AM |
No Bette Midler? What kind of list is this?
by Anonymous | reply 11 | April 10, 2023 2:29 AM |
Bette Midler sealed her fate with those Gay Marriage comments.
by Anonymous | reply 12 | April 10, 2023 2:35 AM |
Judy was one of the most talented singers ever. She also had a lot of pain and struggle throughout her life. Despite that, she had a good heart, which is hard to encounter in Hollywood. At a time when gay people were oppressed beyond belief, they identified with her struggles and she theirs.
by Anonymous | reply 13 | April 10, 2023 2:36 AM |
R12 She said nothing wrong. In fact, she was very witty and benefiting gay men with more positive atributes, that we had little need for marriage, and all it means.
OP The answer, of course, is Judy Judy Judy.
by Anonymous | reply 14 | April 10, 2023 2:37 AM |
It depends on how old you are. I'm younger and partial to global pop divas who are still alive and who have openly supported their gay fans in multiple ways. Cher, Madonna, Mariah, Beyonce, and Gaga are the real deal.
by Anonymous | reply 15 | April 10, 2023 2:39 AM |
Why would gay men have no need for marriage? Gay men have been shut out of making decisions for their ill partners because they weren't legally spouses. Bette misspoke.
by Anonymous | reply 16 | April 10, 2023 2:40 AM |
I forgot to add Ariana Grande who has a gay brother and has been on RPDR twice.
by Anonymous | reply 17 | April 10, 2023 2:40 AM |
And she's wasting away!
by Anonymous | reply 18 | April 10, 2023 2:42 AM |
I chose Cher, to whom I was listening before most—well, many—of you were born.
by Anonymous | reply 19 | April 10, 2023 2:42 AM |
Cher's early "Bob Dylan" vocals are so odd.
by Anonymous | reply 20 | April 10, 2023 2:44 AM |
In my life, 2 things moved the needle more than anything else:
- Matthew Shepard’s death
- likeable (then) Ellen coming out while the star of a big 3 sitcom
by Anonymous | reply 21 | April 10, 2023 2:49 AM |
For those citing Midler's comments about gay marriage. Here's exactly what she said from 1.20 onwards:
LK: "Should they be allowed to marry?" 1.20 onwards.
by Anonymous | reply 22 | April 10, 2023 5:31 AM |
R22 Again. She said nothing wrong.
by Anonymous | reply 23 | April 10, 2023 7:39 AM |
Viola Davis
by Anonymous | reply 24 | April 10, 2023 8:00 AM |
I think it depends on your generation. I picked Cher. I never cared for Judy.
by Anonymous | reply 25 | April 10, 2023 8:01 AM |
I prefer an icon that didn't die on the shitter weighing 70 pounds, dead broke.
by Anonymous | reply 26 | April 10, 2023 8:07 AM |
Yes I'm well aware R23. That's why I posted it.
by Anonymous | reply 27 | April 10, 2023 8:56 AM |
Each generation is different. Judy does nothing for me, but I do understand her appeal. For me it's Cher and Elton John. For young guys it will be someone different again, probably some twit twink youtuber yass queen
by Anonymous | reply 28 | April 10, 2023 9:00 AM |
The gays who idolized Judy Garland are mostly dead, right?
by Anonymous | reply 29 | April 10, 2023 9:03 AM |
Judy, Madonna, Cher
by Anonymous | reply 30 | April 10, 2023 10:07 AM |
Julianne Moore. Seriously
by Anonymous | reply 32 | April 10, 2023 10:30 AM |
Isn’t it really Dylan Mulvaney, now?
by Anonymous | reply 33 | April 10, 2023 11:26 AM |
Cher doesn't even like Cher's music. She doesn't believe in her own work.
by Anonymous | reply 34 | April 10, 2023 4:27 PM |
She does like her acting.
by Anonymous | reply 35 | April 10, 2023 4:33 PM |
I picked Judy, but if ever Ms. Vance belonged in a poll ...
by Anonymous | reply 36 | April 10, 2023 4:37 PM |
An icon who is gay, or an icon TO gay folk? The question is sloppy.
by Anonymous | reply 37 | April 10, 2023 4:39 PM |
You forgot Carrot Top!
by Anonymous | reply 38 | April 10, 2023 6:55 PM |
Gaga or Madonna for basic gays under 50.
by Anonymous | reply 39 | April 10, 2023 6:59 PM |
Lol Janet at 0% a day later
by Anonymous | reply 40 | April 10, 2023 7:01 PM |
Shirley Booth
by Anonymous | reply 41 | April 10, 2023 7:02 PM |
Thelma Ritter, Agnes Moorehead.
by Anonymous | reply 42 | April 10, 2023 9:32 PM |
Judy for the win!
This poll proves my suspicion that the average DLer is 87.
by Anonymous | reply 43 | April 11, 2023 12:29 AM |
George Santos.
by Anonymous | reply 44 | April 11, 2023 1:12 AM |
Why are all of the choices ( except Dean who doesn't belong) women? Is it just reinforcing the straight stereotype that all gay men want to be women or are effeminate?
by Anonymous | reply 45 | April 11, 2023 1:15 AM |
R45 That is a leap.
by Anonymous | reply 46 | April 11, 2023 1:16 AM |
Where is Miss Ross?
by Anonymous | reply 47 | April 11, 2023 2:23 AM |
Vivian Vance would like a word
by Anonymous | reply 48 | April 11, 2023 2:30 AM |
Miss Ross burst into tears when she was informed which group of people inspired "I'm Coming Out."
by Anonymous | reply 49 | April 11, 2023 2:44 AM |
Fuck your icons. It's ridiculous and a total waste of energy
by Anonymous | reply 50 | April 11, 2023 2:49 AM |
Whereas you're not wasting your energy on this thread...
by Anonymous | reply 51 | April 11, 2023 2:55 AM |
If you gays had to pick between Garland and Vance, who would it be?
by Anonymous | reply 52 | April 11, 2023 2:56 AM |
oscar wilde?
by Anonymous | reply 53 | April 11, 2023 3:00 AM |
LookAtMuy!
by Anonymous | reply 55 | April 11, 2023 3:05 AM |
The one and only Anne Murray - who insists that she is not a lesbian.
by Anonymous | reply 56 | April 11, 2023 3:17 AM |
Madonna without even a doubt
by Anonymous | reply 57 | April 11, 2023 3:32 AM |
I wouldn't pick her as the ultimate, but you'd think Barbra Streisand would deserve a place on the list more than some of the choices...
by Anonymous | reply 58 | April 11, 2023 3:36 AM |
My personal favorite gay icon is Joan Rivers with Dolly Parton sitting squarely at #2. They should be part of the poll.
by Anonymous | reply 59 | April 11, 2023 3:37 AM |
Abe Vigoda
by Anonymous | reply 60 | April 11, 2023 3:39 AM |
No Barbra, OP?!
by Anonymous | reply 61 | April 11, 2023 3:40 AM |
I voted for Judy, but really where was Barbra? And Bet?
by Anonymous | reply 62 | April 11, 2023 3:42 AM |
If everybody was being honest, the poll would be 1) Judy 2) Bette M 3) Bette D 4) Liza and 5) Joan.
by Anonymous | reply 63 | April 11, 2023 3:43 AM |
Joan Rivers expected her gay writers to be nonunion. Fuck her.
by Anonymous | reply 64 | April 11, 2023 3:44 AM |
Not even close. Judy, 100%.
by Anonymous | reply 65 | April 11, 2023 3:45 AM |
I vote Lee Radziwill, but for WASPish gays, not for trashy yass queen fags
by Anonymous | reply 66 | April 11, 2023 3:54 AM |
R63 I think Liza should be 1)!
by Anonymous | reply 67 | April 11, 2023 3:56 AM |
I loved watching Joan Rivers (even met her once) but I don't think her potty-mouth humor rises to the level of gay iconic. Judy, Barbara, Bet. Second tier Liza ....
As to Lee Radziwill, I'll match my WASP credentials with anyone's but she was never even on the horizon. Jackie, perhaps so briefly.....
by Anonymous | reply 68 | April 11, 2023 3:59 AM |
Lee was a shallow nasty snobby cunt, she should have a huge gay following
by Anonymous | reply 69 | April 11, 2023 4:06 AM |
Judy was a tragic, mentally ill, child-abusing addict, the Whitney of her day, she should be no one's icon.
by Anonymous | reply 70 | April 11, 2023 4:08 AM |
If we were honest, we'd admit it was Bonnie Franklin.
by Anonymous | reply 71 | April 11, 2023 4:12 AM |
Stupid poll.
by Anonymous | reply 72 | April 11, 2023 4:20 AM |
Lady Gaga, Janet Jackson and Mariah Carey??? The panderer, the never acknowledge and the when it's convenient... and NO FUCKING Elizabeth Taylor Cyndi Lauper? = shit list
In my opinion, Judy, Madonna, Cyndi, Diana and Elizabeth Taylor are the Gay Messiahs.
by Anonymous | reply 73 | April 11, 2023 4:21 AM |
Sirius XM seventies channel just had a weekend featuring the "Mount Rushmore of Seventies Pop" with Elton John, Paul McCartney, the Carpenters and Stevie Wonder. Can you picture a Mount Rushmore of gay icons? Which hairstyle would the carver choose for Barbra? Would Bette Davis be carved as Margo Channing? So many questions...
by Anonymous | reply 74 | April 11, 2023 4:27 AM |
Cindy Laper!?
by Anonymous | reply 75 | April 11, 2023 4:28 AM |
[quote] And Bet?
Bet?
by Anonymous | reply 76 | April 11, 2023 5:40 AM |
R63, Rivers or Crawford?
by Anonymous | reply 77 | April 11, 2023 5:40 AM |
No Roxane Gay?
by Anonymous | reply 78 | April 11, 2023 5:44 AM |
Marvin Gay?
by Anonymous | reply 79 | April 11, 2023 5:44 AM |
Brooke Shields - if DL were any indication
by Anonymous | reply 80 | April 11, 2023 8:32 AM |
Why isn’t Sufjan Stevens not on the poll? Paton saint of sensitive “no labels” boys in small liberal arts colleges everywhere.
by Anonymous | reply 81 | April 11, 2023 8:36 AM |
If you reject the "Judy as tragic" narrative, (I do) you can then see how she's, in fact, more camp than a whole season of drag race.
by Anonymous | reply 82 | April 11, 2023 8:43 AM |
It's definitely a generational thing. I'm early 40s and if they hadn't shown The Wizard of Oz at school one rainy day, I wouldn't have a clue who Judy Garland was. It might also be an American thing - I don't think she was ever as huge in Europe as she was in the US..
by Anonymous | reply 83 | April 11, 2023 8:49 AM |
^ At 77, Cher’s face is actually more mobile than that of the 37-year-old Olivier Rousteing, the designer for Balmain
What an Achievement!
by Anonymous | reply 85 | June 23, 2023 3:06 AM |
I like Elvira.
by Anonymous | reply 86 | June 23, 2023 3:07 AM |
We need a gay man to be be the top ultimate gay icon. That is why I choose Dean Corll, also known as the Candyman.
by Anonymous | reply 87 | June 23, 2023 3:11 AM |
A man.
by Anonymous | reply 88 | June 23, 2023 3:24 AM |
The ultimate is Patty Duke ❤️
by Anonymous | reply 89 | June 23, 2023 3:41 AM |
Why nobody cares about Amanda Lear here.
by Anonymous | reply 90 | June 23, 2023 11:45 AM |
The Holy Trinity = Judy, Cher and Madonna
The pandering jesters = Gaga, Katie Perry and the rest of modern pop stars
by Anonymous | reply 91 | June 23, 2023 1:45 PM |
R90 Amanda Lear and Dalida would both make my list
by Anonymous | reply 92 | June 23, 2023 1:54 PM |
