I’ve seen the first six episodes and I’m very impressed. It’s probably the best Netflix show I’ve seen since The Crown. Ali Wong and Steven Yeun are terrific.

I watched it OP and enjoyed although it's not something I'd recommend if you're in a fragile emotional state.
Kudos to the soundtrack coordinator. I was happy to hear Tori's Cornflake Girl which was also in one of the new episodes of Yellowjackets.

R3, yes, loving the 90s soundtrack.
by Anonymous | reply 4 | April 10, 2023 12:09 AM |
it's getting great reviews.
by Anonymous | reply 5 | April 10, 2023 12:12 AM |
I was planning to make a thread about it later today, I loved it so much. Binged the whole thing in two days, I can't recall the last time I had so much fun with a TV show. And that last episode gave me such a catharsis, my deep depression eased a bit for the first time in more than a year. So I actually would recommend it to people who've been stuck in that place for a while. Amazon's Undone had a similar effect on me.
The writing is delicious, the directing is sharp as hell, you've already mentioned the amazing soundtrack, and the guys are so handsome. Especially Young Mazino, I really hope his career takes off big after this.

Is it an all asian cast?
by Anonymous | reply 7 | April 10, 2023 12:33 AM |
R7, mostly but not all.
by Anonymous | reply 8 | April 10, 2023 12:34 AM |
Yes I am in the middle of it. Writing and direction are sterling. There’s a sense in the plot and in the casting and subculture (assimilated Los Ángeles Asian-Americans of varying ethnicities and classes) that there’s something new here.
Also Ali Wongs character seems to be thinly veiled autobiography — marital problems with less successful husband…
I really liked it and also thought that the Asian male leads were all sexy
by Anonymous | reply 9 | April 10, 2023 12:40 AM |
I watched the first episode and look forward to watching more. Honestly, it’s sad a network didn’t have faith in the show…it’s quite good and would be amazing if it were allowed to air over the course of several weeks.
by Anonymous | reply 10 | April 10, 2023 12:41 AM |
Which network passed up on this show, I can't find any info on that? I think the fact it's a self-contained mini series is probably what bothered them more than the story itself. Can't milk that the way networks would like it.
by Anonymous | reply 11 | April 10, 2023 12:51 AM |
I don’t have proof a network officially passed on the show…i just consider Netflix as a dumping ground where executives throw spaghetti at the wall to see what sticks. I can’t imagine Netflix was the first place the show was pitched…i think it should’ve been picked up by Hulu, where it could at least go to a weekly schedule after the first few episode are released.
Anyway, I agree wholeheartedly with R9 about the male leads. Asian men aren’t usually at the top of my list, but the show has reminded me how idiotic it is to write off an entire group of people.
by Anonymous | reply 12 | April 10, 2023 1:38 AM |

I finished the last episode tonight and BEEF is sensational. Best series of 2023 so far. Steven Yuen and Ali Wong were did their best work.
This episode of the podcast The Watch has an interview with the creator and director. Contrary to r12, they said that they always positioned the series to air Netflix.

by Anonymous | reply 18 | April 10, 2023 10:10 AM |
I'm force-feeding myself that new Reese Witherspoon-produced misery porn with Kathryn Hahn on Hulu -- she's great, however the flashbacks with Merritt Wever are pure torture designed in a frau lab -- when all I want to do is just drop everything and rewatch the shit out of this show. And I never rewatch things anymore because there's so much stuff out there. It's just that good.
r18 Where the hell has his brother been all our lives? He's SUCH a delight and hot to death.

Loved Beef and I generally hate 90% of TV & movies lately. I also feel ahead of the curve for once because not that many people (people I know, at least) are talking about it. It was recommended on Facebook by a lighting design guy from my high school. Granted, I just moved so I’m completely distracted, but I had not even heard of it.
I hope a lot people don’t think “oh it’s an Asian thing” and not give it a chance. I think that makes it even better…especially the subtle asides and moments when they reference the difference between Americans of Chinese, Korean, & Japanese descent. It’s new ground but it is not the focus of the show in the least.

I plowed through it in two nights. Couldn’t wait to get home from work to finish it. It was really exciting and felt like I was watching something “new”, if that makes sense? Definitely haven’t seen anything like this before. Yeun is stellar. Ali Wong’s husband was very handsome, and the actor playing Yuen’s brother was simply HOT.

Partner & I started Saturday & are on our last episode (for tonight).
The 90s soundtracks takes me back to the 90s when I lived in LA (where the story is set).
Pivoting with unsuspected turns; a departure from what we normally see these days. The mostly Asian cast & watered-down Asian-American perspective is a unique angle but the plot line reaches to anyone.
What's most captivating about it is how sharp it reaches to anyone who's ever valued their being by who and what they have been/done for others.
Not gonna lie, it speaks to me as a 47 yo prioritizing myself for the first time ever in life. I mean really choosing me and what fulfills me--- not family, friends, society, or even my partner.

You also expect it'll be a story about white people being exploitative towards Asians, but -- aside from that rich white lady who fetishises anything Other -- it's just a story about various kinds of Asians being mean towards each other. I loved Amy's calculated "he hated that you were Japanese" line, she knew exactly what kind of effect that wold have on her husband.

Had no idea Ali Wong could act, but I see now she was doing some theatre work when at UCLA. There wasn't a single moment when I thought to myself "oof, no girl, that wasn't it." I think the show was so close to her personally, she poured all of her talent into it.
I'm also impressed with Young Mazino, can't believe I haven't heard of him before. He has the voice of a classic Hollywood movie star, I could listen to him talk forever.

Opening titles are great: I love the varying disturbing and fucked up art they highlight during the intro in every episode. Worth it to not “skip intro.” Reminds me of the White Lotus opening titles that decay, changing from serene to perverse during the intro.

It really is a wonderful show. How great was Björk's All Is Full Of Love blasting over their joint culmination of rage in the penultimate episode? It worked on several levels because neither of them have been getting the love they've always wanted from either their parents or in their romantic life.
My favourite little moment in the show was Danny going "get off my jock" with such relish and a twinkle in his eyes, knowing full well just how much that cliche was going to annoy Amy. I chuckled even before he finished the sentence.
by Anonymous | reply 73 | April 14, 2023 6:15 PM |

by Anonymous | reply 74 | April 14, 2023 6:16 PM |
r75 You can see in that scene just how starved for human connection he is. I've read comments from Koreans on Reddit, saying they've had similar experiences -- going from withholding families to a church service and suddenly there's all this warmth and love, and it just overwhelms you.
by Anonymous | reply 76 | April 14, 2023 6:28 PM |
I’ve only watched two episodes and don’t think I will water the rest. I agree that the acting is very good and that several of the men are hot. But, the level of rage, depression, and BPD among the characters makes it unpleasant for me to watch.
by Anonymous | reply 77 | April 14, 2023 6:38 PM |
I think as R67 mentions, it just feels so contrived. If the characters were better drawn I’d probably be more interested but it just feels like a wind up. Nothing about it is believable, not for one minute.
by Anonymous | reply 78 | April 14, 2023 6:46 PM |
I found most of it believable, but I also enjoyed some of the heightened reality bits. It's entertainment, after all.
The characters are wonderfully complex. Love how Danny always went just to the edge of blowing up his relationship with his brother, only to choose brotherly love in the end.

by Anonymous | reply 80 | April 14, 2023 6:52 PM |
Nice touches of verisimilitude throughout. For example, the Cho brothers and their cousin all had biblical names. Huge numbers of Koreans are Evangelical Christians, which they also brought out in the church/worship leader subplots. All of the supporting characters were interesting in their own right, even if they had minimal screen time. The mark of very good writing.

Amy masturbating with a gun, and her in a motel face down ass up waiting to be fucked by a stranger is something I've never seen on TV before. Certainly not with a straight woman, and most definitely not with a model minority. So that was quite impactful.
r38 I had a similar realisation in the final episode, although in the opposite direction. All my life I've been preoccupied with how I can help others and humanity in general, but I've never once considered how my depression was causing absolute misery to the people closest to me. I'm not a natural disaster like Amy and Danny, but I'm up there. A light-bulb moment, for sure. Also, Danny's "why is this happening to me, why can't I do anything right, why is the whole world against me?" attitude is going to be super familiar to anyone with depression.

Some of the church moments feel beautifully authentic...like from someone who knows modern American Christianity well. Other movies and tv shows have failed at such scenes because they were obviously made by outsiders to evangelicalism

by Anonymous | reply 98 | April 15, 2023 4:36 PM |
The show features a very specific type of evangelical community for Koreans that is more on the hip side, it doesn't really comment on the evangelical church more broadly. And of course, as could be seen in The Gilmore Girls and just from living in South Korea, evangelicals in that community come in way nastier versions as well.
Ceterum censeo, Young Mazino should fuck me.

I sincerely hope there is not a season 2. This was perfect as it was. Netflix has this habit of taking something so good and then mass producing it and it is no longer entertaining. Orange is the New Black comes to mind. It was pretty ground breaking and fascinating for the first 2 seasons or so, then it went downhill rapidly.
The cast in Beef is great! I didn't much care for cousin Isaac and first then I really liked his character. Paul annoyed me at first, but then as we see him in more scenes I thought he was very cute (and super hot). Same with George, I thought he was annoying but then he grew on me.

R75 That was an incredible scene, never quite seen anything like it. The handling of the Korean/Asian attachment to evangelical SUV-church christianity was so skillfully done, and while being as cynical and realistic as you'd expect, weren't completely bashing the care and emotional support received by such religious attachments. I was crying with him, really feeling his hunger for "the Lord's" unconditional love. Thank you Jeebus!!
It was a great, great show, unexpected, great intersectional capture of LA and its communities and classes.
I never liked Ali Wong as a comedian - I always found her arch, wooden, too scripted to be funny. But I was blown away by her in this series. Who knew she could act?
by Anonymous | reply 108 | April 15, 2023 9:09 PM |
The scene that really broke me (MARY!!) was when they flashed back to very young Danny crying and getting bullied at school and then earnestly asking to hang out with baby Paul all day instead. Something about seeing that little boy trying to convince his parents that 2 year old Paul really liked it when he was home was so heartbreaking. And it was perfectly timed in the season.
Also liked the scene of young Amy overhearing the parents arguing but something about seeing the two boys as little kids was very touching.

Before that, I read an interview with the creator of the show who said that, originally, Danny and his family were intended to be white but they realized that, if they go ahead with it, people would focus on issues of race instead of class, so they decided to go with an all-Asian cast.

R123 and they were able to cast an Oscar-winning best actor to deliver a tour-de-force performance...

Only 3 episodes in but love everything about Beef. I agree whoever said that Steven Yuen deserves an award for the church scene alone. I said the same thing to my husband as we were watching. The progressive emotions he showed in that scene were mesmerizing. I felt every moment of it. To me that qualifies great actor status.
by Anonymous | reply 125 | April 16, 2023 5:15 PM |
They should have cast Michele Yeogh in the Steven Yuen role.

what would season 2 look like?
by Anonymous | reply 127 | April 16, 2023 8:10 PM |
You could have Danny and Amy teaming up against George and Fumi to get custody of the kid and Isaac getting revenge on everyone and the fiance doing the doing the same

Seasons 2 and 3 should have new strorylines and actors

Turns out that the actor David Choe is a rapist piece of shit. How big is his role in this show?
by Anonymous | reply 130 | April 17, 2023 2:10 PM |
Link r130. I only know of him as the guy who did a mural for Facebook and instead of cash, chose $60,000 in stock and got 200 million dollars out of it

Love it! The 9th episode was the best. I heard it's doing just ok-not-great numbers for Netflix so it probably has 50-50 chance for renewal. Tbh, one season is good enough for me. It neatly wrapped up all the storylines without any loose-ends or a cliffhanger. But I certainly wouldn't mind a 2nd season. More work for asians in Hollywood.

The last episode made me cry. Doesnt need another season.
by Anonymous | reply 145 | April 18, 2023 9:45 AM |

by Anonymous | reply 146 | April 21, 2023 8:47 PM |
R146, why did you watch 10 episodes of a show you didn’t like? Don’t you have other things to do?
by Anonymous | reply 147 | April 21, 2023 8:51 PM |
I want to run r146 off the side of the road.
by Anonymous | reply 148 | April 21, 2023 8:52 PM |
R146 watched it because it's a pretty good show and he got caught in it but won't admit it.

I'm enjoying this dark comedy. Just read this morning about the controversy concerning David Choe. He's good in the series, but what a prick. He is a rapist.
Joseph Lee who plays George is gorgeous, but his character is such an idiot. I wish Ali Wong (Amy) would rip him a new one.
by Anonymous | reply 154 | April 21, 2023 9:56 PM |
R147 Because everyone I know who watched it told me to stick with it until the end. I was going to give up after the fourth episode, I was so damn bored. Yet everyone said, "You have to stick with it - the last episode is so special!"
So I did. And now I regret it. Should've ended it with Ep 4.

When people come on to a thread to bash a show they hate, I’m always curious to know what shows they DO like?
Nothing wrong about not liking a show, r155, but what shows DO you like? Again, just curious.
by Anonymous | reply 156 | April 21, 2023 10:12 PM |
They are already working on a version with all-LGBT actors, called Queef
by Anonymous | reply 157 | April 21, 2023 10:43 PM |
It's okay but nothing special -- might have been reallg good if it had been 6 episodes instead of ten.
And spoiler alert:
You knew the whole time that they were going to fall in love. What else could have happened.
And for those who wonder what shows those of us who didn't like this might enjoy -- Rectify is amazing. So is The Great. Shrinking is fun. There are plenty of better shows out there.
by Anonymous | reply 158 | April 21, 2023 10:46 PM |
I love Rectify and The Great. I also enjoyed Beef.
by Anonymous | reply 159 | April 21, 2023 10:58 PM |
R158 Um, I don't think they have fallen in love. Just bonded.
by Anonymous | reply 160 | April 21, 2023 11:21 PM |
I don't think that the rapist guy was acting, he was just being douche-bag himself. If you watch the interviews with him, you will see he is the same person in real life. A total knuckle-dragger
by Anonymous | reply 161 | April 21, 2023 11:23 PM |
I didn’t think the scene in episode 9 with the panic room was necessary. That was sick. She didn’t deserve that.
by Anonymous | reply 162 | April 21, 2023 11:28 PM |
Few things I hated about the show.
How did the husband not know that Danny is a scammer? He tells him about some bad plumbing in the bathroom and the next thing, two guys, that he figured out were scammers, show up at his door, telling him about how his house has bad plumbing and he should let him in. That was just stupid.
The second stupid part that stick out was how Danny didn't realize that Amy was the person his brother was seeing, sooner. More precise, when he stole his brother's phone to jerk off to the photo of his gf, the phone starts ringing with That Bitch or some similar name saved on the phone, with her face..and then he picks up and it's Amy. Yet, they totally brushed that off afterwards, like that didn't just happen.
Some other things that kinda annoyed me were how that billionaire (lesbian) didn't have a security guard. Especially since she and her wife were living in the middle of nowhere. And how did Amy see so well without her glasses. Even in the nighttime.

Well R156, I only made it through one episode of Beef but I really liked Swarm and am enjoying Dead Ringers on Amazon Prime this weekend.
I watched S1 of Yellowjackets, which was fine (I thought they were going to wrap that up in one season, though) but don't feel like I need to watch anymore of that. I don't watch Succession. I tend to prefer a movie or a limited series.
Anyway, since you asked....
by Anonymous | reply 167 | April 22, 2023 4:22 PM |
Yeah, S2 of Yellowjackets is...currently running. That's about ALL I got to say about THAT.

R167, I’m also enjoying Dead Ringers! I looked for a thread, but didn’t see one. Rachel Weisz is phenomenal.

Would cops really enter the house with multiple hostages with their machine guns blazing? That seemed totally unrealistic. Didn't even try talking to the bad guys via megaphone. And they were shooting for like 5 minutes straight and only shot one guy? What were they shooting at?

by Anonymous | reply 190 | April 30, 2023 9:41 PM |
No, I'm a straight guy. Dude was hideous. And dumb as a rock. His brother was a lot better looking, but short. Their cousin looked like a douchebag rapist. Which he actually is in real life. The best looking guy was the husband, but his character was a vanilla flavored neutered meek pushover.
by Anonymous | reply 191 | May 1, 2023 3:17 AM |
[quote]No, I'm a straight guy.
Well, that explains it then. Young Mazino is the beauty, the essence, and he IS the moment. Trust us homos on this one, dear.
And yes, he is goofy and dumb, but also strangely insightful at times and possibly the most decent person on the show, along with the hot husband. It's that complexity that makes me love this show – and Paul – so much.
by Anonymous | reply 192 | May 1, 2023 4:18 AM |
Straight guys aren't good at judging which guys are truly hot and sexy.
by Anonymous | reply 193 | May 1, 2023 5:12 AM |
R193 Yet, every other thread on DL is about gay men discussing which woman is hot and which isn't. Hilarious.
by Anonymous | reply 194 | May 1, 2023 5:30 PM |
Paul was originally presented as very stupid but then we learn that his brother sabotaged his educational choices and that he did make some great investments. Paul was not the stupid douche presented in the first episodes. He proved to be a douche with Amy but his brother definitely envied his brains.
by Anonymous | reply 195 | May 2, 2023 12:23 AM |

This hasn't been renewed yet. Should be around this time that Netflix should annouce renewal or not. I just heard the creator said that the story came to its conclusion. Quite different when he initially said he's planning 3 seasons of it. Seems he's changed his tune now.
by Anonymous | reply 214 | May 24, 2023 1:20 PM |
Creator originally said it was a limited series, then changed his mind and said it could be three seasons when the show blew up. I, too, wonder what made him now revert to the original position.
by Anonymous | reply 215 | May 24, 2023 1:27 PM |
I kind of like how it ended. The pattern of Netflix shows seems to be first season a big HIT; then subsequent seasons the show just become boring and unwatchable e.g. Orange is the New Black, House of Cards etc.
I say, go out on a high note.
by Anonymous | reply 216 | May 24, 2023 8:29 PM |

I loved it until episode nine. Just too far fetched and ridiculous. I would have accepted a lot. The show has plenty moments of "say what" moments but they we all couched in reality. So I bought those moments and just went with them. But that was just too much.
I do think it's cool they went for it. But it didn't work at all for me.
They could have toned it all down to a more believable crescendo and still had Danny and Amy stuck together in the middle of nowhere, forced to reckon with each other mano y mano.
