Why don't Hollywood women have short hair anymore?

Short is looks so bold and refreshing. Long hair is everywhere and overplayed.

If you can pull off both long and short you're a true beauty.

Linda Evangelista by Julien d'Ys is a hard act to follow. But many did. And most failed. Apparently, Linda's signature haircut happened during the same year as Demi Moore's: 1989.

Ultimately, I don't know which came first. Even so, one was only within a few months of the other. It was definitely part of the zeitgeist though. Especially as 1980s big hair trends began to fall out of fashion (which was also changing, with the onset of Grunge).

young woman do not like this hair style and older women will not be able to grow back their hair. I think the bob is in because actress and models have fried hair and they have to cut it off and use extensions. If someone is caught between extension appointments, they want their real hair to be cool. It is the bob.

Most straight men have a strong preference for long hair. They prefer skanky looking desperate housewives extensions like Kimberly Guilfoyleā€™s to healthy, natural looking medium length hair. They actively dislike short hair. A much smaller subset are the same way about blondes.

I donā€™t understand it because once hair hits the shoulders, what difference does it make how long it is? But it just is.

by Anonymousreply 27April 9, 2023 1:25 PM

OP. Iā€™ve been considering going full on short (bet very femme), for a few weeks now. This thread has sort of inspired me.

by Anonymousreply 32April 11, 2023 9:42 PM

Like the above poster said, most straight men and women don't like short hair. On top of it, you have to be exceptionally gifted in the facial structure and beauty dept. to get away with it. Plus, short hair you have to wash and do every day, all over. With long hair you can go a few days between washings.

by Anonymousreply 33April 11, 2023 9:46 PM

You have to be young with good bone structure. Older women start sagging around the jawline and look butch with short hair. That's why a chin length or slightly longer bob looks better on middle aged women.

by Anonymousreply 34April 11, 2023 9:59 PM

That's why a chin-lift is a must for women over fifty.

by Anonymousreply 35April 11, 2023 10:04 PM

And, apparently no bra....SLUT!

by Anonymousreply 37April 11, 2023 10:48 PM

Those long tendrils are passe now. Only trashy girls still wear those silly ringlets.

by Anonymousreply 38April 11, 2023 10:55 PM

Long hair on older women looks much worse. ...especially when they hang on to their long hairstyles from their younger days

by Anonymousreply 39April 11, 2023 10:59 PM

I've had both. Chin length bob and a couple of inches below my shoulders (where it is now). Shorter hairstyles require more frequent trimming and daily styling so they look good. Longer's also more versatile. You can wear a pony tail or put it up in clips.

I remember a Youtube clip of a recent Miss Universe pageant posted here. The YT comments about Miss Singapore, who had a cute pixie she could actually pull off, were scathing.

by Anonymousreply 40April 11, 2023 11:03 PM

Because itā€™s extremely unforgiving - unless you are beautiful with near perfect bone structure itā€™s near impossible to pull off.

by Anonymousreply 41April 11, 2023 11:26 PM

Older women canā€™t grow their hair? Lol

by Anonymousreply 42April 12, 2023 1:23 AM

Iā€™ve gone short before, and honestly? Iā€™m not trying to brag, but it looked damn GOOD.

But I was much younger. I have big eyes, a small nose, and decent cheekbones. My chin works well with the rest of my face, and when I was younger, I had perfect skin.

People say I look much younger than my age, but I believe men who say this to me are just younger guys, who are trying to get laid. LOL!

But my face has held up pretty well. I look good for my age, but imho, do look my age.

That said, Iā€™m not sure if I can pull off short , short hair at this time. I can definitely pull off a chin length bob, maybe even a tad longer.

My long hair was my pride & glory. I regret getting so depressed, that I didnā€™t care for it like I always did before, but thatā€™s OK. Itā€™s growing back.

For now? Iā€™m gonna do the wigs, until I figure out what I want to do with it.

I need to lose about 20 lbs before I can decide what I will do, because my face will look different after I lose the weight. Thatā€™s why I want to lose it slowly & replace weight loss with muscle, rather than becoming stick thin.

My one hope is that Halle Berry looks AMAZING at her age. I donā€™t look like her, but we share some similarities, including what my body looked like until I began overeating a little over a year ago.

Aging doesnā€™t necessarily suck, but it changes everything, which is why itā€™s so important to become mentally and emotionally resilient as we get older, as well as learning to accept ourselves as older versions of ourselves.

Iā€™m NEVER gonna be in my peak 30s again, but I can be on my peak 50s. Iā€™m going for it. Hair has little to do with it, when looking at the bottom line.

I love you old bitches. Thanks for helping me accept aging with humor & grace. ā¤ļø

by Anonymousreply 43April 12, 2023 4:37 AM

Then there are the women who have their hair grow longer in their mid-70s and decide to put it in a pony-tail ala Ruth Ginsberg in their 80s. (I'm looking at you, Judge Judy!).

by Anonymousreply 47April 17, 2023 5:31 PM

The wokes and big butch lesbians ruined short hair for feminine women. Short hair was very popular in the 80s. Many sexy women had short hair. Rachel Ward in the 1984 movie Against All Odds is a good example.

Charlize and Halle are the two gold standards for short hair. However if you're not gifted with a good bone structure, having short hair limits the kind of roles that one can take, unless they want the wig the actress (wigs can cost $10,000-$20,000, and usually you order 2-3 for rotation and backups).

by Anonymousreply 51April 17, 2023 6:13 PM

You need to have great facial bone structure to look good in short hair. Linda Evangelista, Sharon Stone, Halle Berry, Demi Moore were all able to pull it off back in the day. Today's filler-injected faces and gigantic lips just don't go with short hair.

by Anonymousreply 52April 17, 2023 6:15 PM

R22 I'm 53 and my hair grows just as long as fast as ever. Older women can grow long hair indefinitely.

It's mostly women in the Republican party who wear their hair unnecessarily long or with long extensions like their going to their senior prom. It's really become a tired look that has become on-brand for MAGA women. A lot of women and hairstylists in Hollywood have wised up and are moving away from this look.

The Supermodel Trinity were a huge part of the cultural zeitgeist in the '90s. They may not have been in movies, but they were certainly appearing on magazines, in music videos, and on TV back then... and their looks were certainly being talked about and influencing people.

True, a good majority of women have long hair, but don't wear it ridiculously long and impractical like MAGA women do. Kelly Loeffler, Kimberly Guilfoyle and Ann Coulter are just a few examples of this. They also do wear their hair styled like a Disney Princess or bridesmaid on wedding day like Kayleigh McEnany and Lara Trump. These are usually dumb, superficial women.

[quote]True, a good majority of women have long hair, but don't wear it ridiculously long and impractical like MAGA women do. That type of Barbie hair is very popular among tacky women of all stripes, including almost every female reality star I can think of. And a larger number of IG 'influencers.' Again, not just a Republican thing. If you are actually thinking of the MAGA women at any Trump rally, for example, they are usually old, fat, and have have old woman short helmet hair.

by Anonymousreply 84April 20, 2023 4:53 PM

R80 is correct, the women who wear huge long clumps of other people's hair on their head in octopus curls look ridiculous, particularly after forty.

But most women don't look great with short hair. And most women don't want to change their style every time trends change (short does go out of style fast), and most women want something that looks okay with a wash-and-go but which can look glam with a little effort. Hence the enduring popularity of long hair on regular Janes.

by Anonymousreply 85April 21, 2023 12:50 AM

I think androgyny is coming back. Somebody pointed out to me that Sigourney Weaver in the original Alien film would not look out of place in today's world.

1968 was a year of tumultuous change and Mia Farrow started the short hair trend that year with Rosemary's Baby, which began only to fade in 1971 with Jane Fonda in Klute.

R88 doesn't understand a damn thing. Short hair doesn't look boyish or masculine on a beautiful woman. In fact, it often enhances her beauty and femininity. Unfortunately, short hair today has been hijacked by butt-ugly women so now people associate short hair with ugliness and female masculinity.

by Anonymousreply 92May 11, 2023 12:02 PM

[quote] butt-ugly women

AKA "lesbians"

by Anonymousreply 93May 11, 2023 12:04 PM

R92 I do 'understand a damn thing'. And it's that this is gay men talking about women's hair. You naturally prefer the masculine look while straight men and lesbians mostly like the feminine look of long hair on women. Butch lesbians favor short hair because they're on that borderline between male and female just like how a lot of gay men have high voices and femme characteristics.

by Anonymousreply 94May 11, 2023 12:31 PM

All of you bitching about short hair on women making them look masculine, are you the same folks that believe in strict gender roles? Girls should wear pink and boys blue? Girls should be secretaries and boys should be engineers?

Next thing you know, you'll be advocating for women with short hair to call themselves "non-binary" or take testosterone.

This entire conversation is counterintuitive coming from gay men. But then again, gay men fancy themselves experts on everything female in spite of the fact that they'd rather die than perform cunnilingus.

Just sayin'.

by Anonymousreply 95May 11, 2023 1:00 PM

by Anonymousreply 100May 11, 2023 1:29 PM

by Anonymousreply 101May 11, 2023 1:30 PM

R94, still can't understand. Still retarded. "You naturally prefer the masculine look." No, idiot. Women with short hair were never masculine. In the past, short hair on women was seen as feminine and attractive. Watch older movies and tv shows. It's only today that short hair = butch because today ugly, fat, masculine women have short hair so the pretty, feminine ones are afraid of having short hair. So when gay men say they like short hair on a woman, they're not saying they like the masculine look, they're saying short hair looks nice on beautiful, feminine women. Get it now??

by Anonymousreply 102May 11, 2023 2:27 PM

[quote]Women with short hair were never masculine. In the past, short hair on women was seen as feminine and attractive. Watch older movies and tv shows.

Well, this just simply isn't true. You can pick out a few exceptions but on the whole it isn't true. Women are more likely now than in the past to have short hair.

by Anonymousreply 103May 11, 2023 2:32 PM

For some women it's all about being sexual and youthful and appealing. It's Farrah Fawcett's look updated perpetually. I think it looks terrible on a lot of women, and even a tad dull. Personally I thought some of the 90's cuts were great, Drew Barrymoore pulled off the look well in Mad Love. A "waterfall" look requires a fair amount of maintenance.

by Anonymousreply 104May 11, 2023 3:10 PM

by Anonymousreply 105May 11, 2023 3:10 PM

R103, yes it is true. There were plenty of beautiful short haired women in the past. Today, it's all ugly women who have short hair.

by Anonymousreply 106May 11, 2023 4:37 PM

Short hair is extremely high maintenance and takes many expensive salon appts to keep up. Long hair can be thrown in a bun on a ā€˜bad hair dayā€™ instead of struggling with a products to keep it in line. Women hate short hair for a myriad of reasons. It will never come back. Sorry.
