She's been amazing lucky, and I bet many of the actresses of her vintage are dead jealous: of her energy, of her lifestyle, and most of all, because she's with a very nice man with big-dick face, who looks after her like a prince. How many other such divas have ever managed to score such a deal in the late days of their life? Almost none. Look at, for example, Linda Evans: a much kinder and nicer woman, and much younger than Joan, but now ill, alone, and almost a hermit. Meanwhile Joan, with homes in London, LA and the South of France, lives a life that 20 year olds would envy. You have to give it to her that through will power and the expenditure of energy she's won at life to a remarkable degree: a feat few pull off.

This is Dame Joan ramping up for her 90th burfday next month (May 23rd). No way she lets Carol Burnett steal all her thunder. She'll trot out some more photos, do a sit-down with her abysmal BFF Piers Morgan, and do as many photos as possible with her other BFF Juliet Mills to look even younger. She's a hustler and I admire her for that.

Joan's luck in the Hollywood of the 1950s and early 60s was really abysmal, I thought as I watched that documentary. I really didn't remember how many big films she starred in, all huge flops. She was given many chances but none really panned out for her, and perhaps some of that was due to her less than stellar performances, too.

I was never much of a fan but she won me over in a lot of the contemporary scenes, as she's seen editing the film and reminiscing about her life and career.

Besides the work, OP's pic probably has some spackeling.

I liked how she used “are you gay” as an attack on the interviewer at R11 followed by an unconvincing “there’s nothing wrong with that”. Yes, she is Old Hollywood, for sure.

Joan seems to lead a happy life and she has her health and marbles, though I've heard that her hubby is gay... with the same set up as the late Arlene Dahl and her much younger hubby who doted on her. As for Joan's strike out as a '50s starlet, let's just say she became a better actress with time.

That's simply not true. Many were hits. Elizabeth and Essex, the girl in the velvet swing, Island in the sun ( a top 10 hit). She was a big star. As was the now completely forgotten Anthony Newley. I don't any any other old Hollywood star who hit number 1 decades after the studio system collapsed.

Past a certain age probably into the 70s, regardless of fitness level (short of a Jack LaLanne type who works full time with fitness) people will walk a little less solidly. I don't think Linda Evans of John Forsyth were particularly friendly or welcoming to her when she first arrived on the Dynasty set. When the ratings lifted and the public came to love Alexis/Joan, some of the Dynasty cast were pissed off with the narrative that Joan saved the show. Forsythe seemed to really dislike her and Evans was very tight with him.

But she saved the show.

I always thought she had an old lady look on Dynasty. She definitely looks younger in this photo.

The best part of the documentary linked above is the montage of her new superstardom thanks to Alexis. With Joan appearing all over the play in all those fabulous 80s gowns and dresses. She looks ravishing and glamorous in all of them.

R67 You are absolutely right, and Collins has been talking about her 'mistreatment' on the set, and 'jealousy' from Evans, Forsythe and others.

She has said more than once Forsythe was not happy that she became a regular, and he wanted her fired when she posed for PLAYBOY in December, 1983, at the age of 50. He said she 'degraded the show' by doing so, and audiences would tune out. However, it was a triple win for her: she was the highest paid 'centerfold' at the time, the December, 1983 issue became the best-selling issue of all time (not sure if it still holds that title), and the ratings for DYNASTY increased that season (1983-84). However, it cooled the relationship between Forsythe and Collins, and they only spoke to each other on set when they had scenes together.

As for Evans, she found her cordial when she joined the cast, but took Forsythe's side and wanted her fired for posing for 'PLAYBOY'. She didn't find Evans to be a particularly 'good actress', either.

Pamela Sue Martin quit the show because she realized Collins stole her storylines and became the villain of the show. They softened 'Fallon' to the point where PSM thought she was ridiculous, and therefore left the show at the height of its popularity. Collins thought she was 'crazy' to do this.

Worse filtering than Brendad Ickson

Many years ago I had to interview her for a story and found her to be very professional and extremely pleasant (unlike some other actresses who made it clear they were superior in all ways to a lowly journalist -- Melanie Griffith and Shelley Long were the worst) -- but she was, and probably still is, almost stiflingly stupid. Possibly the most limited mind I've ever run into.

But again, very pleasant and actually fun to talk to -- reminded me a little of Andie McDowell, who was also charming and sweet to interview but was about as bright as a rock.

I think Angela Lansbury had her beat, but the years are pretty rough on most of those who make it that far. A dear cousin of mine lived to 90 and was sharp and independent for all but her last few months, but she looked like Alton Brown in her final years.
