Republicans are now in control of North Carolina
April 5 (UPI) -- Democratic North Carolina representative Tricia Cotham announced that she is switching party affiliations Wednesday.
The switch gives the North Carolina GOP a veto-proof supermajority which means they could override vetos from Democratic Gov. Roy Cooper, provided no representatives break ranks.

How is that even legal? If she had any honor, she'd step down and run again next time. Oh, that's right, she's a republican, she doesn't understand the meaning of honor.

Expect more of this. Republicans can not win with their unpopular ideas, so they'll get more and more creative with their cheating. If you compare Tulsi Gabbard to Krysten Sinema to Tricia Cothman, they are getting slicker and slicker with this trick.

More GOP/Putin blackmail/extortion politics. You’ve got secrets and we are going to exploit them to force your compliance. Nothing to do with the electorates voice being heard or freedom. Just authoritarian sociopaths bullying for more power.

This bitch ran as a Democrat and has only been in office for just several months, but all of a sudden she says "the modern-day Democratic Party has become unrecognizable to me"???? She complained that she was criticized for using the American flag and praying hands emoji on her social media and on her cars. I suspect she doth protest too much and a few people bitching about her emoji hardly amounts to a reason to switch parties, particularly one that runs counter to her on every issue she supported in her campaign (or pretended to support).
I also think she was never a Democrat and this whole party-switch was in the works long ago. Or someone has some seriously bad stuff on her and used it. She's a fraud. She's also in a blue district so I don't see how she's going to last beyond her current term.

R10, she was apparently a democratic state rep in another district from2007-17. Something has changed--she's likely getting something out of this. It must be big for her, because she is in a heavily democratic district now and is unlikely to be re-elected. Clearly she can do a lot of damage in the meantime.

If it turns out she really did do this because she's fucking that goober, she better buckle in, because any kind of social media "harassment" she received will be nothing compared to what gets thrown at her now.

The only sliver of a silver lining in this cloud is that a NC Rep has only a 2-year term, so she's up for re-election in 2024. But yes, she can help do a lot of damage in the next 20 months.

The voters can recall her. Once she’s exposed as a whore, they’ll go after her. In north Carolina, no matter what your politics. An adulterer is a problem in local elections. She’s toast. And I bet that Guy isn’t even a good lay.

The problem is after 2008, the Democratic base has been largely MIA in NC elections, while the deep red rural and exurban voters are voting in unprecedented numbers. Black, Hispanics, urban, and young voters had abysmal turnout in November. Rural blacks stayed home en masse in November. And Democrats have done a crappy job of registering new voters, while Republicans have been going gangbusters registering new red voters

How can this morally bankrupt woman look at the rancid amoral cesspool Republican Party of today and say “I’m in!” I hope she’s happy now with whatever they gave her. I also hope she is shouted at whenever she shows her face in public. Sad to see that the states are falling like dominoes to a fascist, authoritarian GOP who will rule them for 100 years, as there’s no legal way to get rid of them as they lock it up tight. Hello poverty, teen pregnancy, illiteracy, no higher education, children working in slaughterhouses and on and on. But, this is what you North Carolinians, Floridians, Texans, Tennesseans etc. want. It’s what Americans want. Enjoy.

You should not be able to switch parties AFTER getting elected at the state or federal level.
There should be a required special election.

I’m sure there were plenty of signs that she was a DINO. She shouldn’t have been the Democratic nominee.

At one time, people thought NC would trend purple to blue because so many people from the Northeast and Midwest are moving there. It remains of the nation’s fastest growing states, but it’s largely Northern conservatives and retirees moving to NC. And they are countering any progressive migration to the state and voting red when they move. So, population growth is actually making NC redder.

This woman switched parties because her new boyfriend told her to
The sad thing about women being held back from making progress in this country is largely due to women acting like women. They want to be submissive to a man and punish other women. Even Ruth Bader Ginsberg was guilty of this.

It is not inevitable NC will trend blue. It’s population growth is largely attributable to conservative Northerners and retireees moving there to escape liberalism. The state is redder now than it was in 2010

I’m furious too. Imagine being a gay voter (or anyone else targeted by republicans) voting in good faith for the Democratic candidate and then this betrayal. The Republicans want to strip me of my human rights, and I would never vote for one in a million years.
We’re attempting to hold back an avalanche of right wing extremism in these states. Our democracy is at stake. And this? I’m more depressed over NC and them trying to expel Democratic reps in TN for protesting guns than anything I’ve heard in a while.

Senators Jim Jeffords in Vermont and Arlan Specter in Pennsylvania both left the republican party, In Specter's case almost immediately after election to a new six year term. Jeffords from R to Independent voting with democrats, and Specter from R to D.
