Why are there multiple Barbies and Kens??

I hope this flops so Greta Gerwig and her college pal Kate McKinnon would finally have a major fall from grace.

Well, it looks like they forgot the revolutionary fat Barbies that were popular for a while. Can't please everyone.

Who will see this? Little kids like Minecraft, Legos and Pokemon. Little girls have stuff like Monster High and Lol Surprise Dolls. Barbie has been losing relevance since the early 2000s when Bratz rivaled it in popularity. At least Transformers and GI Joe have elements to at least make a decent popcorn action film. Barbie is just a boring perfect blonde with a gay boyfriend living in Malibu. Not much to make a plot from. There were a bunch of Barbie cartoon movies for little kids that played with fantasy ideas. But nothing about Barbie would work for live-action.

It's got A list leads and is a big budget Warner Bros. production so it must have something going for it.

For me, the interesting thing is that a few times Hollywood tried to make a real life action movie of Masters of the Universe after the one with Dolph Lundgren (one attempt was with Sex and the City's Jason Lewis and then a fairly recent one with Noah Centineo). But they got shelved. But THIS gets greenlit, filmed and released?

I’m a bit more interested it it now than pre-trailer. I like the vibrant colors. Doubt I’d go to the theater to see it, but would likely stream it.

Fantasy world building is VERY expensive. Unless you have solid backing you just can't do it. Barbie, for what it is, is a longstanding known commodity.

Barbie being a fashion doll doesn't have much of a narrative other than "she can be anything." That's why she had many animated movies in different roles and occupations. She's literally a blank slate. It seems from the trailer they are making it a self-aware parody like Baywatch and The Brady Bunch Movie but I'm not sure it can work for a feature length film. Also the Toy Story franchise already did that parodying of Barbie and Ken and it worked as a side gag.

I think this is going to be a surprise hit. It's kind of a perfect sunny antidote to all of the bleak and dark films that have been released in recent years and it's not another fucking comic book movie made for teenage boys. Greta did good with Ladybird and Little Women. I think she'll make this the right amount of universal and subversive. I suspect it will at least do as well as Elvis did last summer.

Young millennial and Gen Z girls and gays loved Bratz, American Girl and Monster High because they were more diverse. Bratz especially was huge because they had racially ambiguous anime-ish features and wore modern day 2000s fashions. American Girl was popular with middle-class parents because they were educational and featured different backgrounds. Barbie was considered very antiquated by the 2000s for it's unbearable California WASPiness and looking like a blonde bimbo. Barbie started ripping off other brands to keep up with the changing times and Mattel's lawsuit against MGA over Bratz was to destroy it's competition.

Mattel was starting to die until the early 2010’s when they rebranded and started being more inclusive. That saved them.

There's a difference between casting hot actors and casting actors who are actually fairly good actors. I can understand that in the casting of Gosling at least.
