The Pope may be Dying
Pope Francis has a respiratory infection and will need to spend a few days in hospital in Rome, the Vatican says. The 86-year-old had breathing difficulties in recent days but does not have Covid, a statement said. It said he would need "a few days of appropriate hospital medical therapy". "Pope Francis is touched by the many messages receive.
His closest staff, including security, are expected to stay the night at the Gemelli Hospital, a person with direct knowledge told the BBC. This is the busiest time of the year for Pope Francis, with many events and services scheduled ahead of Easter weekend. A Palm Sunday Mass is scheduled this weekend, and Holy Week and Easter celebrations next week. He is also scheduled to visit Hungary at the end of April. On Wednesday morning, he presided over his weekly general audience in St Peter's Square. He appeared in good spirits but was seen grimacing as he was helped into his vehicle.
The pontiff has used a wheelchair in recent months due to mobility problems related to his knee. He also underwent surgery to treat a colon problem in 2021. In January, he said the condition had returned. Despite his ailments, the Pope has remained active and has undertaken trips abroad. He visited the Democratic Republic of Congo and South Sudan in February.
In January, the Pope led the funeral of his predecessor Pope Benedict XVI - who was the first pope to step down voluntarily for centuries. He said this was due to ill health. Pope Francis has previously indicated that he may also wish to follow in Benedict's footsteps in the event that his health deteriorates.

Considering the level of anti-black racism that obtains in Italian culture, along with the fact that the Roman Catholic Church is, ESSENTIALLY, an Italian institution, and I'd hazard a guess that we are very much not likely to see a black Pope anytime soon, despite the fact that that is currently the leading choice here on DL (LOL). Last fall I read he really wanted to hold on through November. He had picked a group of Bishops from around the world, that was more on the liberal side of things. The conservative Cardinals were not happy. But he/they made it. And the Nazi former Pope passed away. I think that the more liberal side of things now has enough votes to determine the new Pope. We shall see.
I know when I say the liberal side it's still not where most of us want to see. But at least they aren't going backward like our country seems to be.

Is the Vatican representative of "Italian" culture. In recent years, there have been few Italian popes. I would guess that the most fervent believers in Catholicism are in developing countries. I could see a Black Pope in my lifetime, especially since they only pick really old guys who get about 7-8 years each.

R64 Actually, they choose older Popes so that they (purposely) won't be in power for a long time. They don't want another Pope in the seat for 26 years - that's unheard of and unexpected. They want to rotate Popes every ten years or so. They would never pick someone in their 40s or 50s and have them serve 40 - 50 years.

R69, no , long papacies are not unheard of. It you go back to the 1800s, Pius IX was Pope for 32 years, followed by Leo XIII for 25 years. That's 57 years with only two Popes. Even in the 20th century there were papacies that lasted for 17, 19 years etc and had Benedict not resigned, he would actually have been Pope for 17 years.

Yep / you need a dying baby (or one whose heathen parents won’t do it - Grandma’s rationale):
“indeed, in a case of necessity, any person who has the requisite intention may do so (canon 861 §2), even a non-Catholic or a non-Christian.[3][4]. By "a case of necessity" is principally meant imminent danger of death because of either illness or an external threat. "The requisite intention" is, at the minimum level, the intention "to do what the Church does" through the rite of baptism.[5]. The Latin Church considers that the effect of the sacrament is not produced by the person who baptizes, but by the Holy Spirit.”

I was grew up in a Catholic family and my dad performed an extenuating circumstances "baptism". My grandmother had a late in life pregnancy in her 40s. My grandfather traveled for his job quite a bit. My dad was 19 at the time and when my grandmother went into labor he drove her to the hospital. My great grandparents met them there. My grandmother delivered a month before her due date and the doctors said that my uncle was sickly and underweight. They didn't think they he was going to live more than a few days. My dad couldn't get ahold of the parish priest and the hospital couldn't get ahold of other priests they knew. The "baptism" took place in a little area near the nursery. My great grandparents acted as god parents while my dad performed the "baptism". My dad admitted that it was a very awkward situation and my great grandparents had to "guide him" through the prayers and baptism sayings.

[quote] The idea of Limbo, which the Church has used for many centuries to designate the destiny of infants who die without baptism, has no clear foundation in revelation, even though it has long been used in traditional theological teaching. Moreover, the notion that infants who die without baptism are deprived of the beatific vision, which has for so long been regarded as the common doctrine of the Church, gives rise to numerous pastoral problems, so much so that many pastors of souls have asked for a deeper reflection on the ways of salvation.
[quote] There are theological and liturgical reasons to hope that infants who die without baptism may be saved and brought into eternal happiness.

R132, no one remains in purgatory.
Purgatory is a pause on the way to heaven.

RE: The Pope may be Dying
I suspect the Pope reads DL. When leaving the hospital, he quipped to journalists before being driven away: “I’m still alive.”

The reason he doesn't look well is that he has gained weight. He slimmed down after getting diagnosed with some heart ailments a few years ago, but now he seems to have ballooned. I hope they will put him on a regimen so he can stick around for a while.

The microphone didn't pick it up, but what he really said was "Godammit, I'm still alive."

[quote] Popes will always and only ever be white and European.
[quote] The CURRENT one is not European.
He may not have been born in Europe, but ethnically, his heritage is exclusively European.
I'm sure you knew that, but you're just trying to be an annoying and obnoxious contrarian.
[quote] Pope Francis was born as Jorge Mario Bergoglio on 17 December 1936 in Flores, a neighborhood of Buenos Aires. He was the eldest of five children of Mario José Bergoglio (1908–1959) and Regina María Sívori (1911–1981).
[quote] Mario Bergoglio was an Italian immigrant accountant born in Portacomaro (Province of Asti) in Italy's Piedmont region. Regina Sívori was a housewife born in Buenos Aires to a family of northern Italian (Piedmontese-Genoese) origin.
[quote] Mario José's family left Italy in 1929 to escape the fascist rule of Benito Mussolini.

Well everyone is from somewhere else in the New World unless they are indigenous but you don't hear people born in America saying "I am European!!" This premise doesn't hold water - or holy water.

"Indigenous" peoples are from somewhere else as well.
[Quote]Geneticist and professor of anthropology Jennifer Raff (2022) in the book "A Genetic Chronicle of the First Peoples in the Americas" summarized that the first people in the Americas formed from the merger of a distinct Paleolithic Siberian population (known as Ancient North Eurasians), with a deeply diverged Ancient East Asian group about 36,000 years ago, giving rise to both Paleosiberian peoples and Ancient Native Americans, which later migrated towards the Beringian region, became isolated from other populations, and subsequently populated the Americas.

The Holy Father will continue to serve for as long as the Lord desires for him to do so. Hopefully, it will be for a few more years.

The poster above probably meant European, as in European DNA or origins. Pope is Latin american, but from an Italian family, he is not mixed race Latino.

Pope Francis with his mother, father, and four other siblings.

Reading through his Wiki Page, I find it fascinating that Francis outlived three of his four younger siblings.
Not only that, but he lived longer than both his parents and all of his siblings, except for his younger sister who is still alive.
His father died at 51, his mother at 70, his brother (??), his sister at 67, another brother at 68.
Francis I is already 86 years old, which means that he far outlived any of the rest of his immediate family.

R119. So they could, in theory, have some sort of hot 30 year old Pope?
Let's make it happen!

Yes, we could, in theory, have a hot 30 year old pope.
But that won't happen.
The youngest someone can be ordained a priest is 25 and it would be unheard of to have a 30 year old Cardinal.
Plus, unless it was someone spectacularly good, would we really want a pope in office for 50+ years?

R153. I'd settle for a hot daddy 40 year old pope.
He can retire once he's aged out of his looks. That's a decent period without overstaying his welcome.

The Catholic Church is on shaky ground, losing priests, and recruits for the priesthood, and losing Catholic worshippers. So who ever they pick has to appeal to a demographic that will grow the Church. That's why Francis was such a good choice. On the surface here's someone with European roots but also South American. They will look for something similar.

If the next Pope is African they are likely also quite conservative. In the US black + conservative will cancel each other out; liberal Catholics will balk at supporting a conservative Pope while MAGA traditionalists will balk at taking orders from a black man.

Yes, R159, that is why we do not want an African to be made pope.
They are way too conservative.
