Are the people involved just actors with a script/fake story?
If they are real, why would anyone want to have their case mocked on national TV? How do their cases end up on TV instead of a normal court?

I forget to mention "The People's Court". Are those cases real? That show seems faker than Judge Judy.

Yes they are real. Judge Judy doesn’t pay for actors. They take cases from the overcrowded small claims courts around the nation. The plaintiffs if successful get their money asap from the show and the defendants if they lose must pay through an arbitration service.

You know OP I used to think the same regarding people who went on Jerry Springer. The older I got I realized some people will do anything for free plane ride to a big city, 2 minutes off fame, and a bucket of chicken.

Sorry - wondering how the one-named "Carly" is supposed to be identified. Wrong thread.
I knew someone who was invited to be on Judge Judy over her ex keeping their two cats. He was a cop so she figured Judy would automatically take his side so she passed on doing the show.

Did somebody say chicken???

r2 I'm confused. If the show pays the plaintiffs, then who are the defendants giving money to?

R4 Judge Judy is not like that. She always acts on the basis of the law. If you shut your mouth, have courtroom etiquette, and present your case you will win, if you have a case that is. It’s a reason why JJ won’t accept statements. Her court is the most true to a real government civil court.

Don't the defendants get paid as well?
by Anonymous | reply 8 | March 28, 2023 7:27 PM |
Yes, they get paid an appearance fee.
by Anonymous | reply 9 | March 28, 2023 7:28 PM |
R6 the contractual agreement they entered when signing up for the show, meaning they if they lose they must pay. They can make installments. JJ is true to small claims court with the max being 5K in most jurisdictions.

Well, is the appearance fee $5,000.00? There ya go. The defendant at least gets a trip to LA or NYC.

Ah I see R10 I'm also assumed if the defendant lost then the court paid their charge, hence no one is out of pocket even if they lose. Makes sense otherwise some wouldn't feel any incentive to defend their case as they lose nothing anyway.
I know many dislike her but I love her no-nonsense, common sense approach

What I love about JJ is how she schools desperate women who try to buy a man. People says she’s hard on men but if you watch the show these frauish women will shell out money to a dude for a vacation. That debt Judge Judy will accept but then said Frau will give dude more money after he hasn’t paid her back for trips, cell phone bill, etc. At some point your common sense must kick in. If you don’t have the dude explicitly saying he is paying you back for each item you wined and dined for JJ will not let you get all the money back. Because they know what it was. The women are only asking for the bank because the relationship didn’t work out.

[quote]Well, is the appearance fee $5,000.00?
No, it's anywhere between $100 and $500 depending on the case.

[quote]Regardless of Judge Judy’s ruling, both parties seem to come out ahead. The show pays for the rewarded arbitration, which is capped at $5,000, along with all the litigants’ travel expenses (including hotel stay). Since Judge Judy tapings are in Los Angeles, California, that equals a free Hollywood vacation – even for the loser – and up to $5,000 more for the injured party. The defendant is not even legally responsible to pay the plaintiff themselves! Additionally, extra appearance fees for guests, ranging from $100 to $500, have been reported over the years.
