So apparently there has been an unsupervised border crossing into Canada until just days ago and I’m the one of the only Canadians who didn’t know. And it’s not like this is bordering the desert like the southern US. It’s a very populated area. Post 9/11 this seems like a really idiotic thing to do. Does Canada just have huge sections of unguarded borders even in the 21st century?

Yes, because Canadians (for the most part) are white, so it's okay if you come into our country.
But we must protect ourselves from the brown people on our Southern border.
