Fifth Column, like L7 and many other rockers, weren't lesbians yet often played to the perception they had to be to rock... it pissed off a few lesbian bands and rather than working to be better, bitched and moaned how they weren't getting a chance because they didn't suck dick.

There was a very anti-establishment scene with lesbian music, if anything was released by anything more than out of the back of your car... there was a lot of shit talking. I've never thought of "Fast Car" as a lesbian song. Probably because when I first heard it I didn't know Tracy Chapman was gay. Envisioning the couple as two women adds a dimension, but it's still a powerful song that could relate to anyone who needs to escape. And there's no reason to believe she intended it to be narrowly interpreted. Art is universal, and all that.
