What is the best lesbian rock song?

I know that this seems like it’s a song to a man. But at the time, I knew where her bread was buttered.

Great lesbian rock song.

Great song.

One of the all time great choruses

Lesbian rock songs? Or do you mean, best rock song by a lesbian?

Fast Car is a great song and it doesn't have to be about a lesbian, it's the same for most of the other songs listed.

Not a lesbian song but my favorite song by a lesbian. It's iconic and there's NO. WAY IN HELL anyone could release a commercial cover of this today. It's too controversial.

Excellent song.

Fifth Column, like L7 and many other rockers, weren't lesbians yet often played to the perception they had to be to rock... it pissed off a few lesbian bands and rather than working to be better, bitched and moaned how they weren't getting a chance because they didn't suck dick.

^ checking, should have checked first. I guess, a few of the band were.. I just recall that was one of the beefs from other bands of the time. There was a very anti-establishment scene with lesbian music, if anything was released by anything more than out of the back of your car... there was a lot of shit talking. It's one reason it's so difficult to find all the yesteryear lesbian bands that released on minor indie/DIY labels.

R61 I find her beautiful for much more than how most people think a woman is meant to look physically. I find her talent, her lyrics, her heart, her spirit, and her masculine energy to be be beautiful. I'm simply enamoured with her.

by Anonymousreply 68March 27, 2023 2:44 PM

I've never thought of "Fast Car" as a lesbian song. Probably because when I first heard it I didn't know Tracy Chapman was gay. Envisioning the couple as two women adds a dimension, but it's still a powerful song that could relate to anyone who needs to escape. And there's no reason to believe she intended it to be narrowly interpreted. Art is universal, and all that.

Oh, I didn't catch your post before I posted r71! THREE SONGS ON ONE THREAD!!

It's a Joan Armatrading revival and it's starting now!! How do we get in touch with the Stranger Things guys and get her included in the final season?

I love all the love for Joan Armatrading here. I still have the T-shirt I got at a concert of hers in the mid-80s. It is so threadbare that wearing it in public is borderline obscene. But it feels so good to me to remember seeing her perform live.

Great song! Fun Fact: the melody is based on a traditional English folk song!
