Why are there so many paintings of cows?

I went to the art show in Memorial Park In Houston today, and there were so many paintings of cows, it was overwhelming. Why would anyone want a gigantic painting of a cow? Apparently a lot of people do, because there were a shitload to choose from.

Cows are sacred in India and Texas. For different reasons, of course.

Because they stand still for a long time. Really.

That actually makes sense, Dustin. Thanks!

Does it have something to do with the rodeo?

Cows are big in Texas. Meaning the animals...not just the women.

They were certainly a favorite subject of Gary Larson.

The paintings all looked like variations of the one in r14.

I like cow paintings, or anything pastoral....sheep, horses in farmland fields. The folk art pieces are my favorite. It's peaceful to me and it's a rural life I'd like to live....if I had the money. A lovely old farmhouse in the county.

Breeding cows and painting breeds or famous cows were big in 18th c England. It was prestigious and a sign of wealth for country folk, aristocracy and gentry. It also stood for county values.

As a native (yet struggling) Texan and 4th generation UT Austin grad, I have a special affinity for Texas kitsch, especially Longhorns.

R19...There's a bunch of those cow statues in my area. They're random...some in front of banks, businesses, municipal buildings and private residences. Each cow is painted in different patterns and colors.

Here's a nice painting of a cow by Maurice de Vlaminck from 1926.

I'm also a native Texan of many generations, but I think paintings of cows are STUPID.
