According to Ben Mankiewicz the opening scene of George C Scott in front of the giant American fl was meant fo after the intermission but producers wanted it at the beginning to set the tone of the film.

My dad LOVED this film and bought an LP of the sound track. My brother and I would play it over and over, and memorized the opening speech to his troops, complete with all the profanity.
Good times.

Op- I think I read that GCS was tricked. He did not want that as the opening sequence, it was filmed with GCS thinking it would appear later in the movie. It's gotta be the best opening /introductions for any film!

My hot, youngish U.S history teacher (also a football coach) made us watch this sophomore year.

Agree. It's nearly 3 hours long and the only scene I remember is Patton slapping the soldier suffering from 'shell shock'

I don’t know anything about the production of the film but using the speech as the opening is brilliant - the kind of decision that would be more obvious during the editing of the film than in the script stage - it’s all in how the scene was designed and shot.

R11, I agree. It's arguably the greatest opening in film history.
