Confused about tipping? You’re not alone

Have you recently been ambushed with a screen after buying a soda? What about the last time you picked up a to-go order? Tipping has become muddled and overwhelming.

Sorry--not sorry--but I don't feel like I should have to tip the person behind the coffee counter at Starbucks who gives me my coffee. I order a regular coffee. It's nothing fancy. It's a cup of coffee. You pour it in the cup and give it to me. That's all. I add the cream and sugar. No one deserves a tip for a transaction like that.

Not another one. I could go for a yearlong ban on tipping threads.

Tipping culture in the US is out of control. In my state, they get minimum wage, not even foodservice wage anymore, what the fuck more do they want?! Waiting tables or working fast food is a tide-you-over gig, not a career.

The girl I bought Mother's Day flowers from the other week lightly pressured me at point of sale into paying an extra fiver, for goodwill or something I guess.

In fairness she did throw together the bouquet herself with her own two hands and did a nice enough job, and it is a small business so I'm sure her wages aren't a lot, so I didn't mind much or resent it. I'm sure she did something essential or useful with it. Still I felt a tiny bit rudely confronted and gypped nonetheless, especially as it was a rush job on the spot, she isn't the business owner, and I gave her my reasonable budget limit before she put my flowers together. If independent workers are going to do this, it should be discussed earlier in the transaction, or should be presented as an option or as a request with a particular reason/context (not just "give me an extra 20% on the established price tag just because I asked with a smile").

Rather that than tipping a barista or a checkout person who works for a chain, though. If your employer is a national or global franchise making big profits, *they* can and should cover your wages (not that they fucking do, but that as R5 says is another issue). Like most others, I'm struggling enough with low income and covering expenses as it is. As long as we let bigger companies and corps get away with allowing customers to subsidise their employees on the same business model as sleazy stripclub owners, nothing changes.

I was at a bakery/coffee shop the other day and the tipping options on the screen were 20, 25, and 30%.

Uh oh, we’ve got brocialist.

I click the 'no tip' button.

It's very easy.

[quote] . I could go for a yearlong ban on tipping threads.

We can do away with it altogether if we unionize.

I order a regular coffee at the counter of the local coffee shop. That does not merit a tip, nor should the person behind the counter expect one nor should the owners of the establishment think I'm giving a tip to their employee. And yes, I pay by credit card so I feel the pressure presenting itself on the computer screen, but I'm still not tipping in this situation.
