39 years ago today, 3/24/84, 5 teenagers served a Saturday detention together…

And the rest is history. Always loved this movie. Crazy how fast time moves.

And two weeks ago (3/11/23) John Bender would have finished his Saturday detentions sentence lol

1984?! I thought it was 1985.

by Anonymousreply 3March 25, 2023 2:31 PM

Teenagers??

by Anonymousreply 4March 25, 2023 2:32 PM

The weird girl reminded me of Roxie Shayne from Guiding Light.

by Anonymousreply 5March 25, 2023 2:33 PM

R3 you are correct. It’s a year off.

38 years ago. 1985.

by Anonymousreply 6March 25, 2023 2:33 PM

R4 the characters were teens. Yes. We aren’t speaking about the actors in reality

by Anonymousreply 7March 25, 2023 2:34 PM

Ally Sheedy should have been nominated for an Oscar for this.

by Anonymousreply 8March 25, 2023 2:39 PM

Was Saturday detention ever a real thing?

by Anonymousreply 9March 25, 2023 2:43 PM

R9 yes.

by Anonymousreply 10March 25, 2023 2:45 PM

I didn't even exist.

by Anonymousreply 11March 25, 2023 2:46 PM

R11 I was born in 1986, so same.

by Anonymousreply 12March 25, 2023 2:49 PM

“Shut up, bitch. Go fix me a turkey pot pie.”

by Anonymousreply 13March 25, 2023 2:53 PM

I was born in 2005 so definitely didn’t exist. 😝

by Anonymousreply 14March 25, 2023 2:53 PM

A question for you gaylings (R11 &R12). When we eldergays mention a 38-year old movie like "The Breakfast Club", does it seem to you like something from some ancient time? In 1985, if someone had mentioned "Life with Father" or "Forever Amber" to me, they might as well have been talking about films from the silent movie period for all I knew.

by Anonymousreply 15March 25, 2023 2:56 PM

Oh, so since it came out before your existence, it cannot be discussed?

You were tucked inside your mothers' ovaries at the time, and can watch this shit right now on a phone in your pocket.

by Anonymousreply 16March 25, 2023 2:59 PM

R15 I was born a year after the movie came out, so to me it isn’t old, because if it is old then I am old haha. It’s just older than me.

I think of movies pre-80s as very old though, but also interesting. I’m not someone who looks down on older stuff. I like to watch stuff from the past.

by Anonymousreply 17March 25, 2023 3:00 PM

When I was a gayling, I knew all about classic films. Even Forever Amber, because it was a notorious book, and a notorious bomb at the time.

Fine if it was not your area of interest, but why add that you haven't seen it without showing an iota of curiosity? Why do people feel the need to add nothing but their own vacuous ignorance?

You haven't seen it, but you must be aware of it, even if it is just because a Disney show made a reference to it in 2004.

by Anonymousreply 18March 25, 2023 3:03 PM

R3 you are both right. The movie was released in 1985 but the movie is set in 1984. So OP is right. The characters had Saturday detention 39 years ago, but yesterday. Not today. OP is off a day.

R18 who said they didn’t watch it? I’ve watched it probably 30 times. They used to give it all the time on tv in the 90s and 00s.

by Anonymousreply 20March 25, 2023 3:05 PM

It was my first movie with older teens and not with my family or parental figure. I was 12 and I was hanging out with the cool kids. I remember watching the movie and thinking these are what real teenagers are like, ha. And looking down my row and thinking that my older teen acquaintances were like the teens on screens. Little did I know Judd Nelson was like 28.

Thanks to cable films from the 80s Goonies, Fast Times . . .are well-known by yungins

by Anonymousreply 22March 25, 2023 3:13 PM

R20 is kind of getting at the heart of what I was trying to ask at R15. In 1985, I was aware of movies that came out 30-40 years prior. But in my mind, they seemed to have been from a whole other era (which they were) because they weren't as ubiquitous in 1980s culture. For young people today, because they have easier access to 40-year old movies and were likely exposed to them regularly via cable or VHS while growing up, I'm wondering if they view something like "The Breakfast Club" as ancient in the same way I would have viewed "Forever Amber" as ancient in 1985.

Why didn't Emilio Estevez have more of a career? Or maybe he did and I'm unaware of it? Just curious. He had an endearing manner and was a handsome (cute) dude.

by Anonymousreply 25March 25, 2023 3:24 PM

Most of them didn’t have much of a career outside of their teen roles. That was common back then.

by Anonymousreply 26March 25, 2023 3:26 PM

Life moves pretty fast. If you don't stop and look around once in awhile, you could miss it.

by Anonymousreply 27March 25, 2023 3:26 PM

He enjoys running a winery more than showing his ass, R25

Which is (or was, anyway) perfect.

by Anonymousreply 28March 25, 2023 3:27 PM

Emilio is a nepo baby. He’s also a trust fund kid. It’s not like he had to work much.

But he did have The Mighty Ducks franchise too which was a hit.

by Anonymousreply 29March 25, 2023 3:34 PM

Emilio and Charlie are complete opposites in every way. And I always respected Emilio for keeping his Estevez surname and not changing it like Martin and Charlie did.

by Anonymousreply 30March 25, 2023 3:36 PM

I am more of a “Fast Times” person, but I did think Judd Nelson was kind of hot in this. And yes, Emilio was cute as well.

by Anonymousreply 31March 25, 2023 6:18 PM

Also, I don’t buy Ms. Ringwald as a “beauty”, “princess” might have been a more apt term for the film’s publicity. I went to a fairly UMC public school on the east coast my and I don’t know anyone who brought sushi for lunch.

by Anonymousreply 32March 25, 2023 6:22 PM

One of my fave movies

by Anonymousreply 33March 25, 2023 6:23 PM

OP, you wear tights?!

by Anonymousreply 34March 25, 2023 6:29 PM

R32 they’re from Chicago suburbs. And some people did do that. Your experience isn’t everyones.

Molly was very pretty in this.

by Anonymousreply 35March 25, 2023 7:36 PM

R5 Remembering Roxie led to Lujack / Vincent Irrizary which led to Wikipedia: “On March 16, 2023, his son Elias, who had been a cadet at The Citadel, was convicted for his involvement in the January 6 United States Capitol Attack and sentenced to 14 days in prison.” Vincent was from Queens, so that kinda checks out.
