DeSantis to expand 'Don't Say Gay' law to all grades

"Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis answers questions from the media in the Florida Cabinet following his State of the State address during a joint session of the Senate and House of Representatives, Tuesday, March 7, 2023, at the state Capitol in Tallahassee, Fla. DeSantis' administration is moving to unilaterally forbid classroom instruction on sexual orientation and gender identity in all grades, expanding the controversial law critics call “Don't Say Gay” as the Republican governor continues a focus on cultural issues ahead of his expected presidential run."

Gee. Who didn't see this coming?

I guess the one good point is that for those of us who read the law and understood the obvious loophole - and thus the actual intent of the law - are now vindicated after being told, over and over, that the law only pertained to third grade and under.

So thanks, Ron. I guess.

It is written by think tanks, focus grouped and polled and spoonfed to willing legislators.

[quote] It is written by think tanks, focus grouped and polled and spoonfed to willing legislators.

That's how the process works. Someone else comes up with the bill, and then they look for a like-minded senator or representative (who can be bribed?) to sponsor it. Lobbies do it, too.

It's all culture war nonsense, a distraction, because the Conservatives' stance on real issues pisses voters off.

Not sure folks understand how bad recent polling has been for DeSantis:

- he is fading against Trump

- he is losing to Trump in Florida

- his signature ideas are deeply unpopular, even in Florida

It really does feel like he's blowing it.

They want to go full Republic of Gilead. Not stopping until they achieve it, strip women of all rights, silence and marginalize gays out of legal existence, end any talk of basic racial parity, let alone equity or redress. They tried to overthrow the US on 1/6 and they'll try again. They won't stop until they succeed, there is no bottom here. Then the really bad stuff will start happening. Today they want to jail women for abortions, including what are usually called miscarriages. Tomorrow they'll call for executing them. It's pro-life, you see, to kill a murderer. It's only a skip and a jump from there to concentration camps so get ready.

Of course it's all carefully researched, a wedge campaign - dark money-funded think tanks create the attack point. Remember Karl Rove and his anti-gay voter turnout that helped Bush defeat Kerry.

There's so much that can, and should, derail this crypto-Falangist train that the Trumpers/DeSantamonians are on. But it's also astonishing to think that the possibility of making same-gender relations and activities illegal, is possible. President DeSantis and his Holy Army of Mammon winning in 2024. r28 right out of the Simpsons, where Marge campaigns against the violence of Itchy and Scratchy to the point they make the cartoon so boring kids stop watching it. Then the mob that supported her wants to cover up David because it is pornographic and she refuses because it is a classic work of art "See I knew she was for public nudity," shouts one of them. Marge realizes what she has done and the cartoon goes back to being violent. Her realization is one person CAN make a difference, but probably shouldn't.

When it comes to politicians having gay kids, there are probably some closest case teen or adult kids of Republican politicians out there right now. Remind me again why anyone needs to be teaching kids about sexuality in school.

These are issues for their families. Not for a government entity to be teaching one way or another.

Stick to teaching academics and stop trying to supplant their families. You are not their family. You are their teacher.

by Anonymousreply 38March 23, 2023 8:14 PM

^ STD's are a great reason why. I never knew of anal warts until I got them. Also, there are some STD's that are more prevalent in the LGBT community. I can't seeing Sarah Huckabeast talking about that with her kids. Or, Boefart talking to her kid about knocking up a girl.

by Anonymousreply 39March 23, 2023 8:22 PM

The FIRST thing children ask when they are old enough to speak and understand is "Where did I come from?" If you can't tell children simple basic facts, you are doing them a great disservice. Explaining reproduction isn't sexualizing them. They want to understand where puppies and kittens come from too. Extreme parents won't tell their kids anything, and they grow up getting sexually abused, STDs and pregnant because the truth is obscured and denied by irrational, uncaring religious zealot parents.

R38, kids have always been taught about sexuality in school, at least where I live. We were taught about sexual intercourse and reproduction when I was 11. It's not a mandatory class, however. We were given permission slips for our parents to sign and there were a few kids who sat those lessons out because their parents didn't sign.

What's the issue? I don't think teaching children about sex makes them any more or less likely to engage in it while underage. Look at abstinence only communities where anything to do with sex or bodies is kept hush-hush. Teen pregnancies and STDs abound. They're still having just as much sex as other hormonal teens, only difference is it's the unsafe kind.

by Anonymousreply 46March 23, 2023 9:20 PM

[quote] Remind me again why anyone needs to be teaching kids about sexuality in school.

Because a lot of parents are too fucking stupid, too fucking ignorant, or too fucking religious to teach anything real about it. That's why, you sad bitch.

by Anonymousreply 47March 23, 2023 9:22 PM

R38 You are delusional. Sex education, i.e. biology and health, have been taught in school as an established curriculum since the early 20th century. Like all curricula, it gets updated and modified when new information, or new perspectives, emerge.

And what is so unique about sex? It's part of being an educated human. Personal beliefs can contradict established norms, and that's fine. I mean there are some fundamentalist Christians who believe that there was no such thing as evolution, and that the earth emerged complete from the mind of God about 4,000 years ago. Of course people have every right to believe that. They don't have a right to prohibit other children to be exposed to settled science because of their personal belief.

There are those who believe the world is flat. They have every right to believe that. They don't have a right to re-write curriculum to prove their belief and ban the science that offends them.

Dear "anti-woke, anti-SJW, pro-MAGA" posters on this gay site:

What is happening in the US with these reactionary rollbacks of simple human rights, is part of a worldwide trend to make being gay illegal. The same people who have passed these laws in Africa and the middle east want to make "homosexual activity" punishable with prison... and in some instance execution. This is not a false panic. Just this week a law is passed in Uganda making it illegal to even "identify" as gay.

All hands on deck. The 21st century is becoming a place where all the freedoms of the last century are in jeopardy.

I went to school in 1990. Since the eighth grade, we had health class and they talked all about sex, the reproductive organs, periods, wet dreams, and STDs. Kids could be let out of health class if their parents objected. I remember our books had close-up pics of huge sores on dick heads and pictures of what the clitoris looked like. They even talked about homosexuality naturally occurring in nature and an estimated 10% of the population was gay. It was all part of the curriculum, the body, health and sexual health. Sex ed was just a few chapters, but we were all taught it. At some point, they broke us up into girls and boys because of the nature of the talks. Basically, the males taught the male kids and the females taught the female kids. My favorite was the q and where one of the guys asked what a normal penis size was and went on to be surprised it was not nine or ten inches.

by Anonymousreply 91March 24, 2023 5:47 PM

I remember seeing a video of a high school class in France talking about sex ed. The teachers (I think they had both a man and a woman) talking about the importance of the first time being good... about making sure that both partners were completely in agreement, and how the boys especially needed to know how to make the girls cum. They described the slow and carefully lovemaking that could make the experience memorable, especially for girls.

The US is not France. More's the pity.

It's all on purpose. Republicans are trying to kill 2 birds with one stone. 1) they have had it in for the public schools for awhile like every other public service they've tried to destroy (USPS, social security, etc.) Imo, that's one reason they don't do shit about school shootings either. They want people to lose faith in schools so Americans need to pay for private schools, or do homeschooling. Homeschooling accomplishes a few goals conservative extremists have: moving towards the privatization of yet another public service, keeping women home bound (someone has to care for and school the children), and best of all -- keeping a majority of Americans stupid.

2) it's been well established that decent sex education works and that abstinence only propaganda leads to higher rates of teen pregnancy. It's also well known that teen pregnancies have been on the decline for decades. Now why would they go against that if they claim to worry about that?! Oh that's right! They actually WANT teen pregnancies. For one, they see pregnancy as a good punishment, but they also have an agenda to increase baby making. It keeps the young impoverished, women stuck at home, making them lots of little low wage, uneducated servants. That's what they really want when they bring up "family values" -- they want the good old days, where women felt pressure to marry young and made them lots of babies to send off to wars or whatever else they see fit.

Don't ever forget what their little crusade is about. It has nothing to do with them personally being prude, or caring about abortion, or even about homosexuality. They're just seething that they don't have enough recruits to use and discard.

Exactly R96. Nailed it.

I'm surprised anyone wants to go into teaching these days. I did consider it for a time, but there's no chance I'd do it now. Most parents sound deranged and a lot of teachers must feel like they're walking on eggshells to ensure they don't incur the wrath of said parents.

by Anonymousreply 98March 25, 2023 12:28 AM

r96 Exactly, keep them dumb and reproducing and you have a built-in constituency.

My mom was a school cook and she had to deal with difficult parents who verbally abused or blamed her for things she had no control over in terms of food supply ordering, budgets,, state requirements, and other things she couldn't control or decide on. When I saw what she went through, I vowed I would never work in any job dealt heavily with parents and kids. I worked in restaurants and retail during college and there were times my anxiety would go up if loony parents and noisy kids were around.

I have two friends who have left teaching because of shitty and deranged parents. One friend went to nursing school and one of his professors encouraged him to apply at a children's hospital since he had been a teacher. He said no because he felt that if he dealt with shitty parents in a school setting, he would likely encountered similar shit in a hospital setting. My friend said he doesn't hate kids, but he just hates shitty or whiny entitled parents.

Another friend in our social circle is a medical social worker and she started her career working with families of pediatric patients at a teaching hospital. She left that job and has worked at rehab centers for adults with disabilities. She has mentioned still having to deal with occasional abusive clients. But, she said dealing with whiny or shitty parents in a medical setting was a bigger pain in the ass. She said parents would use her as a scapegoat for issues they had with their insurance companies or they would blame her in situations where they didn't qualify for income based assistance programs. She and the former teacher friend have said working in any environment with parents and kids whether it's education, social work, or medical related it always ends up being abusive at some point towards employees in those fields. I agree with them. My mom feels she was abused, but she has embarrassment trying to talk with counselors about it because she still has the mentality that since "she was just a cook", her pain is trivial compared to what other people go through. I keep encouraging to keep going to counseling.

At this point with these don't say gay bills and book bannings, I don't blame anyone who leaves education or decides not to become teachers. Nobody should be put in the situation where they have to constantly walk on egg shells because of deranged or entitled parents. Sadly, I wouldn't be surprised if some poor teacher or librarian who is gay ends up having a mental break down or attempts/commits suicide because of these laws and policies. DeSantis and his supporters are also victimizing school employees with this shit. Too many entitled or deranged parents in this society will never understand how they fuck up other people.

R100 Yeah you've eloquently outlined the scenarios I feared happening if I had ever gone into teaching.

I'm sorry your mom had to go through that. I think when you work with the public in any role, you come to realise how fucking awful some people really are. But I think it's amplified even more when it comes to schools/education because parents are so entitled. I get they want the best for their children, but that shouldn't mean they have free reign to be rude, belittling, abusive and demanding. They're like big kids who were never told no themselves, so they carry that through with them into adult life.

by Anonymousreply 101March 25, 2023 7:51 PM

R101 R100 here I agree, in school settings it amplified more due to the entitled parents. When I dealt with shitty people in restaurant or retail work, it was easy to ignore at times because the shitty customers would just leave. In my mom's experience as a school cook, it could be very difficult at times because parents would go and bitch to the school board or school administrators. I grew up in a small town and that made it difficult for her at times because school board members would see her at stores or church and whine to her. There were some kids and parents were always appreciative of my mom and I think it was those kids and parents that helped get through a difficult job.

These days when I read about far right types getting onto school boards or going to school board meetings to bitch about books, curriculum, in addition to other issues, it sort of makes me glad that my mom retired in 2012. I came out as a lesbian when I was 20, my mom was very supportive of me and has made blankets and donated items to shelters that take in gay and lesbian youth. If mom was still working in a public school system today, I could see her being heartbroken at having to be around far right loons who bitch about books, curriculum, and not saying gay in addition to the other shit parents complain about.

Last year, when that Michigan state senator Mallory McMorrow did her "we won't let hate win" speech I cried. It was so moving and made me glad that there are people like her who don't want people to suffer more than already have to. I hope McMorrow runs for national level political office someday. I would rather see her in Congress or US senate instead of people like MTG, Boebert, Jim Jordan, McCarthy, Gaetz etc.

by Anonymousreply 103March 25, 2023 8:47 PM

The GOP is hellbent on destroying public education and they’re passing bills like these that allow parents who are religious zealots, lunatics and backward thinking idiots to play an even greater role in deciding what is taught in schools. All I can see is future generations of ignorant people who were either badly educated at poorly funded and curriculum compromised public schools or fed a head full of religious delusions and political lies in publicly funded Christian schools or homeschooled by radicalized extremist parents. It’s bleak, and I don’t think it’s going to be easy to turn that around. It’s probably a fatal wound to this country.

R104, that article doesn't support your fears. It seems very reasonable. You can't socially transition students behind their parents' backs, you need to keep parents informed about curriculum and what their children are exposed to and you need to avoid teaching political doctrines as fact. You need to involve parents in the education of their children which is what PTAs used to be about.

Only school systems and teachers with something to hide and a desire to control students would object to this bill.

I am against far left teachers teaching queer ideology to children. That’s what this is about. Pronouns, gender spectrums, etc. I’d rather teach my kids about those things myself in my own language. This was never about not being able to say that some families have 2 mothers or fathers.

by Anonymousreply 109March 26, 2023 7:13 PM

r107, but it is being used that way and we predicted that from the start. You (pretend to) act reasonable, but this was intended for unreasonable Deplorables doing the fascist thing. Not a peep of DeSantis or any Republican to clarify the matter. In fact, DeSantis has been on record for his intention to expand Don't Say Gay to higher grades. But sure, hold on to your reasonable argument that the Republicans intend to do the right thing.

by Anonymousreply 110March 26, 2023 7:14 PM

The vagueness is a feature. It makes teachers and schools police themselves and read into the law what they fear is in it.

It’s the same with the CRT and anti-drag laws. Keep it vague to scare everyone

Always funny when parents say that it’s their job to teach kids about sex and sexuality—-and then never do.

That’s why teen pregnancy rates went through the roof. Schools had to step in a give sex Ed so everyone had a baseline of info. Parents of course keep fighting it. Parents aren’t equipped to talk about sex and sexuality. Straight parents know nothing about gay people.
