I Love The Guy, But at 97, Someone Needs to Take Away His Driver's License

Come on, Dick. You can afford to Miss Daisy it.

To be fair, he thought he saw the little brat who played Ritchie going through his mail.

by Anonymousreply 1March 22, 2023 1:15 PM

Give the guy a break. It’s not like he drove it through a house.

by Anonymousreply 2March 22, 2023 1:16 PM

R2 Just the gate to a house.

by Anonymousreply 3March 22, 2023 1:18 PM

Christ. We went through this with my stepfather. Thankfully just a few minor collisions. They get so stubborn about their "independence" and if the dementia is not full blown, there isn't much anyone can do.

by Anonymousreply 4March 22, 2023 1:26 PM

I'm surprised he can still pass a driving test.

We finally had to take away mom's driver's license at age 87 when she bumped into a motorcycle cop at a light and knocked him over. Oops!

by Anonymousreply 5March 22, 2023 1:27 PM

R4 I understand the difficulty of giving up your independence. That's a difficult thing to do. But it's not as if Dick Van Dyke's only choice is to sit at home if he loses his license. Christ, all he has to do is ring a bell and have a limo pull up to take him to Vonn's.

by Anonymousreply 6March 22, 2023 1:29 PM

Great pic, OP.

He looks evil and downright maniacal!

by Anonymousreply 7March 22, 2023 1:29 PM

Not like young people have accidents.

by Anonymousreply 8March 22, 2023 1:35 PM

Chitty Chitty Bang BANG!

by Anonymousreply 9March 22, 2023 1:37 PM

My 94 year old mother flunked her driver's test because she's basically blind. What did she do? She got her doctor to ok a restricted license where she can only drive in the day and within 40 miles from home. I asked her, "Do you go completely blind 41 miles from home?" She's quite proud of the fact that her license is now good until she's 102 🤦‍♂️

"Dick is full of surprises."

Story of my life.

by Anonymousreply 13March 22, 2023 1:51 PM

^ I love surprise anal from Dick 🤗

by Anonymousreply 14March 22, 2023 1:54 PM

I see him all the time at the local Vons. He's fine. He sends his love.

by Anonymousreply 15March 22, 2023 2:02 PM

R10 What kind of ethical doctor would do something like that? He's endangering her life and the lives of others.

by Anonymousreply 16March 22, 2023 2:19 PM

^ Believe me I'm not happy about it, but small towns have a tendency to look after their own

- r10

by Anonymousreply 17March 22, 2023 2:23 PM

R16 I'm not that person but you'd be surprised! I worked at an eye clinic for a short time and the opthalmologists we're constantly helping people keep some of their driving privileges. Same thing, during the day. Tbf though, driving during the day is different for a lot of elderly people, but still, deep down I knew many were driving more than just those hours.

by Anonymousreply 18March 22, 2023 2:24 PM

A 97 year old driving....what could possibly happen?

by Anonymousreply 19March 22, 2023 2:24 PM

R17 Doesn't sound like he's really looking after his own, though. If he was, he'd tell your mom is time to hire a Hoke.

by Anonymousreply 20March 22, 2023 2:26 PM

R17 if it makes you feel better, I seen it even with new patients at a fairly big clinic. It happens a lot. I think doctors just feel bad for them but there were a lot of times I was cringing in the corner, knowing some of those people shouldn't be driving no matter what the conditions were.

by Anonymousreply 21March 22, 2023 2:27 PM

I would like to see him make it to 100....and others on the roads would be safer.

by Anonymousreply 22March 22, 2023 2:27 PM

Hard for me to believe there is only 5 years age difference between Dick Van Dyke and William Shatner. I think of Dick Van Dyke being at least a generation older than Shatner.

by Anonymousreply 23March 22, 2023 2:30 PM

He's still physically and mentally sharp for being 97, but I do not believe he should be driving anymore. Time to accept your limitations.

A close family friend was driving until his mid 90s as well. His son took away his keys because he noticed his natural movements and reflexes were slower. His lived to 3 months short of 100.

by Anonymousreply 24March 22, 2023 2:31 PM

Maybe the vehicle took off on its own.

by Anonymousreply 25March 22, 2023 2:32 PM

R23 yeah that is weird to think about.

I'm wondering what the wife was doing. What good was marrying someone 5 decades younger if they can't drive you around at least?! I'm guessing hardly any doctors want to be the one to away the license of the guy they watched in Mary Poppins, dancing around the rooftops. Wifey needs to step in and put her foot down.

by Anonymousreply 26March 22, 2023 2:33 PM

r16 Surprised you're shocked by this. Just look at how many doctors are prescribing Ozempic for off-label use for weight loss, even though that results in a shortage of the drug for diabetic patients who actually need it.

by Anonymousreply 27March 22, 2023 2:35 PM

I know he's hella old but does anybody else find him kind of creepy hot? I still want to feel his dick in my mouth, just for kicks.

by Anonymousreply 28March 22, 2023 2:36 PM

Before I was born, there was an elderly man in our area who used to go to the market once a week and drove himself every week until he died aged 98. Everyone knew, apparently, that you had to be careful on the roads on those days because he would be driving incredibly slowly and he had poor eyesight, too.

by Anonymousreply 29March 22, 2023 2:45 PM

R28 I no longer find him hot, but I did in his "Dick Van Dyke" show days. He was the very definition of a lanky guy with BDF.

by Anonymousreply 30March 22, 2023 2:47 PM

R30 The Dick Van Dyke show is now censored.

Was he looking for Country Kitchen Buffet?

by Anonymousreply 32March 22, 2023 2:50 PM

I am betting the "interview" he appears to be giving is entertaining.

by Anonymousreply 33March 22, 2023 2:51 PM

My mom seemed to have a reasonable attitude. In her mid-80s, she began asking me to monitor her driving and tell her when it was time to give up.

One time, making a right turn, she jumped the curb. Just kept going. Not a word. I asked her, “Didn’t you feel that?” She pretended not to know what I was talking about.

We’d finally agreed on a date for her to give up driving. But she kept pleading… just two more months, just another month.

But when she did get rid of the car, the alternatives were close to useless.

We signed her up for Access-a-Ride. They required at least a week’s notice, they often cancelled for lack of drivers, and—worst of all—wouldn’t take her beyond her suburb’s borders.

There was no meaningful public transit where she lived and she could barely manage climbing on to a bus anyway.

The local taxi often failed to answer their phone or promised a car that never came.

We put Uber and Lyft on her phone but that only worked when she could ask a neighbor to put in the request for her. She found it too confusing.

No, I’m not arguing that people who are a danger behind the wheel should stay on the road anyway. Just observing why it’s understandable that they’d want to.

I often think of moving out of the city to somewhere calmer and quieter. But Mom’s experience trying to get around in her later years gives me pause.

(Are there countries that have the senior transportation thing figured out?)

By the way, is OP’s pic is Dick Van Dyke at 97? If it is, he looks amazing, doesn’t he?

by Anonymousreply 34March 22, 2023 2:59 PM

To all those concerned I will say that my 94 year old mother has never gotten a ticket or has been in a accident in her 78 years of driving. She only goes to the bank, her doctor, the drug store and the Piggly-Wiggly all within a mile of her house. The rare occasions that she and my dad want to go some place else, I drive. My dad is 95 and the only reason he no longer drives is that he can't remember how to start the car 🥴

And here I always thought dykes weren't into dick?

by Anonymousreply 36March 22, 2023 3:28 PM

It is so hard to bust through their denial. It’s as if the older and more dangerous they get, the more they cling to their determination. Confronting one’s mortality is that scary I guess.

by Anonymousreply 37March 22, 2023 3:44 PM

Being able to drive is independence. There gets to be a point that it becomes more dangerous when reflex and judgement, and eyesight isn't what is used to be. I get it though...it must be hard to have your license taken. It would be nice if we have enough money to have a chauffeur to drive us when we get to that point. :)

by Anonymousreply 38March 22, 2023 4:33 PM

Even if you are mobile and are in walking distance to all the places you want to regularly go, at some point it becomes a challenge to do that on your own, especially if you need a cane or have to carry bags. It will become increasingly frustrating over time when one's limitations arise.

by Anonymousreply 39March 22, 2023 4:36 PM

I had such a mad crush on him with he was doing the Dick Van Dyke tv show....he is my type of man.

by Anonymousreply 40March 22, 2023 4:40 PM

His son, Barry, needs to step in and take away his car keys.

by Anonymousreply 41March 22, 2023 4:55 PM

Taking the license away likely won't do anything. If he's determined to drive, he'll do it. Someone has to take the keys. If his mind is still there, then he can also learn to use Uber.

by Anonymousreply 42March 22, 2023 4:57 PM

Fake news! It was actually Navckid Keyd behind the wheel.

by Anonymousreply 43March 22, 2023 5:17 PM

His son, Barry, needs to step in and sit on my face.

by Anonymousreply 44March 22, 2023 5:19 PM

He's auditioning for the Prince Philip biopic, "Declination in Place."

by Anonymousreply 45March 22, 2023 5:20 PM

R28 is 98 years old

by Anonymousreply 46March 22, 2023 10:33 PM

I think it’s time he is given a restricted license allowing him to drive only in a certain gated community in Montecito.

by Anonymousreply 47March 22, 2023 10:39 PM

R44 Sadly he's a right-wing nutjob

by Anonymousreply 48March 22, 2023 10:45 PM

He still moves around and is married to a woman half his age, his wife is "only" 50.

If you're that independent, why not use UBER?

by Anonymousreply 49March 22, 2023 10:46 PM

I think it was cocaine.

by Anonymousreply 50March 22, 2023 10:48 PM

R44, You sure?
