If the GOP win in 2024 would you be ok with Russia as an ally? How would life change for you?

It's no longer communist. It's money grubbing and has no values now like us. We've allied with dictators before just fine. Only thing we'd lose are liberty and democracy but people are happy as long as they can go shopping and on vacations.

What's the problem?

by Anonymousreply 30March 22, 2023 6:24 AM

The GOP will not ally with Russia. At worst, it'll adopt Trump's isolationist policy.

Russia's train has left the station -- they're slowly and irreversibly morphing into China's vassal state. And you can't ally with a vassal state of your No. 1 enemy.

by Anonymousreply 1March 21, 2023 3:30 AM

Fuck off, OP. If GOP wins, we're irreversibly fucked.

by Anonymousreply 2March 21, 2023 3:32 AM

Short of a missile strike at the 2024 RNC, we are pretty much irreversibly fucked anyway. It’s just a question of how quickly the fucking happens and if the people who are left to rebuild learn anything from the experience.

Harvey Levin told a really sweet story about Cher last night on Club Random. He said years ago his partner who was a celebrity real estate agent tested positive for HIV. He eventually got full-blown aids and was close to dying. He said there was a knock at his door and it was Cher. She wanted to see Kevin, his partner because she heard he was sick and was her RE agent on a house. He said she went upstairs and sat with him. She talked to him for about 45 minutes even though he was in a coma. What impressed Levin was that she never talked about it to the press or anyone as far as he knows. Last night was the first time he told the story.

oops wrong thread R4

by Anonymousreply 6March 21, 2023 3:58 AM

"If the GOP win in 2024 would you be ok with Russia as an ally?"

Absolutely not.

" How would life change for you?"

If the GOP has it's way, I'd be imprisoned or killed for not being heterosexual and right wing.

"It's no longer communist."

Neither was Germany during World War II. Non'communist isn't much of endorsement.

" It's money grubbing and has no values now like us."

Speak for yourself. Plenty of Americans still have values. That argument is "Whataboutism" at it core. A bullshit premise when someone is trying to get you to abandon your beliefs.

" We've allied with dictators before just fine."

Oh, really? Name one. I can think of Stalin, Gaddafi, Noriega and the Shah of Iran right off the top of my head an none of those ended well for us. And currently we support Saudi Arabia and that just makes us Saudi Arabia's bitch. If you want to be a Saudi bitch, go right ahead. Just leave me and my country out of it.

"Only thing we'd lose are liberty" said the white man.

"... and democracy but people are happy as long as they can go shopping and on vacations." said the white man who has contempt for others.

"What's the problem?"

Assholes like you. But you know that.

by Anonymousreply 7March 21, 2023 3:59 AM

R4, Cher >>>>>>>>>> Mother Russia

by Anonymousreply 8March 21, 2023 4:00 AM

Tara Reid is also greater than Mother Russia.

Also Lindsay Lohan and Amanda Bynes.

I think Lisa Rinna may be giving Mother Russia a run for her money, but let's face it, Rinna has to drag those ginormous lips around, so I think Mother Russia, fat and drunk as she is, has the upper hand.

OP you'd do well to find out how Fascism establishes itself. There are lots of books, credible histories, etc. For now, I'd recommend In the Garden of Beasts. Eric Larson. But there are others. Right now we are in the fight of our lives. The Republican Party has been hijacked by Extremists n the Far Right. White Supremacists. But one of the main things to know is how gradual and how normal seeming Fascism appears to be in the beginning. If your not Jewish or African American, not a woman, or Gay or Trans, then you're fine. And even if you were one of those at first you'd be OK, until you bump up against their system. You talk like a fool. Educate yourself. The notion of allowing the Republicans a chance to take over our government is frightening. It would definitely mean the end of our Democracy, the abandonment of our Constitution, and our legal system, and the establishment of an authoritarian, Corporate police state. Believe it. We really need to wake up to reality and stop toying with what we think we can accommodate.

by Anonymousreply 10March 21, 2023 4:08 AM

We can't condone countries violently taking over other countries. Ever.

by Anonymousreply 11March 21, 2023 4:10 AM

This country goes back and forth between the democrats and republicans all the time. How old are you on this thread to think that we will never be Republican again These divisions need to stop or we will end up in another civil war. Before we were so divided, the two parties used to cross the aisle to work together. We need to go back to that.

by Anonymousreply 12March 21, 2023 4:18 AM

How does OP say he's a troll without saying he's a tro...oh fuck it.

by Anonymousreply 13March 21, 2023 4:20 AM

Before we were so divided, the two parties used to cross the aisle to work together. We need to go back to that.

I'll get right on that after the GOP stops shrieking about Hunter Biden's laptop, drag queen story time and Hillary's emails.

by Anonymousreply 14March 21, 2023 4:23 AM

[quote]The GOP will not ally with Russia.

Hi! How are things posting from 1985?

by Anonymousreply 15March 21, 2023 4:24 AM

R12 the current iteration of the Republican party is not the Republican Party of your Grandpa. The reality is that the people who have taken over the party are too extreme. The Sedition Caucus has taken over the House of Representatives and have no idea how to govern. And that's OK with the people who are really running things. The big money people, the oligarchs and foreign adversaries who want us weaker. They love the chaos.

In the past you refer to, we may have had disagreements on how to get things done, but we always agreed on the basic facts. That is over with. The only way for us to "work together " right now is for the Democrats to let the Republicans have their way. Get rid of Medicare, Social Security, Public Education, fuck the Environment, and privatize everything. Dismantle government and deregulate financial institutions, food and drugs, and everything else. Our quality of living is already going down the shitter from years of neglect and resistance. Why is it that so many people believe the only way to "get things done" is for the Democrats to give in.

by Anonymousreply 16March 21, 2023 4:30 AM

Both side need to give in and stop the stupid shit on both sides. Yes, both sides. Unless you don't want the country to continue. That is exactly what will happen. the people need to fight the rich. We need to bring out the guillotines.

by Anonymousreply 17March 21, 2023 5:06 AM

The Both Sides Troll has stated his boundaries, comrades.

by Anonymousreply 18March 21, 2023 5:08 AM

The fact Russia isn’t communist is not the problem OP. Communism wasn’t the problem. The repression that came with it was. That same repression exists in Russia now. The only difference is they can travel. Even the leadership is the same. All their leaders are former commies.

by Anonymousreply 19March 21, 2023 5:12 AM

Yeah R19. Putin was KGB.

by Anonymousreply 20March 21, 2023 5:16 AM

If Russia becomes America's "ally" it'll be the end of American hegemony, global influence and wealth. It'll be an essential surrender to Russian-Chinese influence.

Europe will essentially be drawn under Russian-Chinese influence due to a lack of any viable allies left. Democratic institutions may quickly be broken down in favor of pro-Russian/Chinese governments. Even those democratic governments that survive will be subject to Russian-Chinese political influence.

The Middle East will go with those more ideologically aligned with their dictatorial regimes.

The world order will be irrevocably shifted towards China which will severely limit America's capacity to make any moves of significance on the world stage, either diplomatically and economically. The benefits the Western world receives from mutual economic and diplomatic cooperation will be subject to the whims and mercy of China and Russia.

Those effects will be very tangible. Everyone currently wants to work with America and are much more wary about dealings with China (and Russia is off the table right now of course). Once the power shifts everyone's going to be jumping up and down for China. It'll be bad enough for the US if the global currency switches to the yuan. But throw in the soft power that Russia could exercise on vital trade partners and industries and America would look very different.

We're not even getting to the political ramifications which would be horrific.

by Anonymousreply 21March 21, 2023 6:46 AM

How to compromise with Republicans when they STILL claim the election was stolen. Not only are THEY lying, they're accusing Democrats of being the fraudsters, cheaters, election stealers. This is the premise they start any and all negotiations. When they fully admit the election wasn't stolen, and go further and admit it was THEY who did the thieving, then we can have rational discussions. You can not negotiate with someone who labels you a cheat and a thief.

I think Hawley is ok. He’s Hawt and he’s only moderately crazy right wing!

by Anonymousreply 26March 21, 2023 10:57 AM

One side is trying to close the wealth gap. This is not a both sides problem. This is a one side compromised by Putin and inflexible theological ideologues problem.

by Anonymousreply 27March 21, 2023 1:33 PM

Please understand the recent history of Russia. Putin was KGB, but he was always more conservative and found communism rather inefficient. Eventually he became a bureaucrat in charge of contracts in Moscow. That's right he was a functionary. And he started giving out lucrative contracts to his friends. Like his karate instructor. (This is no lie.) It was poor misguided Yeltsin who cracked the door open and appointed Putin his #2. George Bush 41 and Reagan were all delighted when the Berlin Wall came down, and the "world" (I use that term advisedly) celebrated the "fall of Communism."

But Putin was poised to take advantage, because all the minerals and the rights to gas oil coal, etc. were no longer government owned and controlled. They were up for grabs and Putin and his oligarch cronies were there for it. Putin is now reputed to be the richest man in the world. He created his own system to take advantage of the fall of the Soviet, but he wants to reconstitute it as an oligarchy. Also they are depleting the natural supplies of minerals and fossil fuels. Putin is not a "Save the Environment" Guy.

Russia invaded Afghanistan for a reason. They are flirting with the Saudis and have deep tentacles in the Middle East for a reason. This goes back to the time before Putin, in the early 70's. Putin embraced that long standing Russian strategy in the MIddle East but instead of the state benefiting, he and his cronies get the benefit. Russia has always had ties in Lebanon, Syria, Iran, Saudi Arabia., etc. We've had to work hard to maintain our relationship with the Saudis which is now in the shitter because of MBS. Putin's Guy.

We have been fighting the Cold War with Russia for decades, and still are. They do not want to be our ally. They don't want to be our friend. They want NATO disbanded, they want Ukraine and every other piece of territory that used to be part of the Soviet. Putin has created himself as a modern day Czar in effect. So stop talking like a damned fuel and start learning. It isn't complicated. There are some very good books and articles by legitimate sources and before you start dropping threads about lets all work together hold hands and sing kumbaya, wise up. And the Republican Party has been bought and paid for by Putin. Believe it. THey want to dismantle our government and privatize everything for profit. They don't want to have constructive policy discussions and work towards compromises.

by Anonymousreply 28March 21, 2023 3:18 PM

We spend too much time focused on Washington politics and not nearly enough awareness of what is going on at the state level. Major important issues are being decided in our state legislatures and we aren't even aware of it. If we want to break the stranglehold of fascism we need to get local.
