Final season. Premieres April 14.
Thank God.

One last chance for sexy Joel to get it on with his BFF Archie.
by Anonymous | reply 2 | March 21, 2023 3:07 AM |
They could have a scene where Joel confides to Midge that both he and Archie are bottoms.
by Anonymous | reply 3 | March 21, 2023 10:52 PM |
Watching the first episode now. I'm gonna miss this show when it's gone, there's just nothing else like it. Every frame looks stunning and they've upped their game in the lighting department this season as well.
by Anonymous | reply 4 | April 14, 2023 9:41 AM |
Unless they show cocks I'm not interested.
by Anonymous | reply 5 | April 14, 2023 1:02 PM |
R5- They did. That episode when her mother takes an art class at Columbia and she almost faints when she sees a man posing naked- they show him FULL FRONTAL.
by Anonymous | reply 6 | April 14, 2023 1:14 PM |
That was seasons ago, R6. There's been nary a cock since--can't they at least show Archie's?
by Anonymous | reply 7 | April 14, 2023 1:17 PM |
R7- I WISH
I'd be happy to see him FULL rearal
by Anonymous | reply 8 | April 14, 2023 2:10 PM |
If only I could watch without the overly pert machine-gun fire dialog.
by Anonymous | reply 9 | April 14, 2023 2:14 PM |
R9- I agree . The characters especially Madge have fat too much energy the way they deliver their lines.
by Anonymous | reply 10 | April 14, 2023 2:27 PM |
They are always “on.”
by Anonymous | reply 11 | April 14, 2023 5:29 PM |
That's what I hate most about the show, R9/R11.
by Anonymous | reply 12 | April 14, 2023 5:33 PM |
That and how unfunny the main character is.
by Anonymous | reply 13 | April 14, 2023 5:43 PM |
Enh, I actually love that about the show; what other show has that kind of Gilmore Girls dialogue? At eight episodes per season, it's like a rich cream you indulge in once in a while.
by Anonymous | reply 14 | April 14, 2023 6:08 PM |
More like spoiled, rotting cream. Yuck.
by Anonymous | reply 15 | April 14, 2023 6:29 PM |
I disagree, the dialogue is pretty witty.
by Anonymous | reply 16 | April 14, 2023 6:30 PM |
I disagree. I think the dialogue is pretty shitty.
by Anonymous | reply 17 | April 14, 2023 7:01 PM |
Then it's not for you, I guess. Plenty of other TV threads on DL for you to peruse.
by Anonymous | reply 18 | April 14, 2023 7:03 PM |
Yeah, there are. And I can be on this one as well.
by Anonymous | reply 19 | April 14, 2023 7:04 PM |
Very.
by Anonymous | reply 21 | April 14, 2023 7:09 PM |
We got it the first five times, thanks.
Anyhoo, I'll miss the gorgeous costumes most of all.
by Anonymous | reply 22 | April 14, 2023 7:10 PM |
That machine gun fire style, the rhythm of the dialogue is also a shout out to the way sitcoms used to be in the 50's. And those 50's sitcoms with their snappy dialogue and oneliners had their origins in Vaudeville. I am telling you, Mrs. Maisel is meticulous when it comes to serving up authenticity. The settings, the clothes, the dialogue, the characters, the narrative structure, etc. this show is sublime.
by Anonymous | reply 23 | April 14, 2023 7:12 PM |
Zzzzzzzzz.
by Anonymous | reply 24 | April 14, 2023 7:12 PM |
I told a lie just then, I'm gonna miss the sexy Luke Kirby most of all. Can he just fuck me already?
Jason Ralph is surprisingly decent as well. Didn't know he was so good at the twitchy, physical comedy.
by Anonymous | reply 25 | April 14, 2023 7:15 PM |
OMG, I love Luke Kirby. His Lenny is a lot sexier than the real Lenny.
by Anonymous | reply 26 | April 14, 2023 7:17 PM |
The hot men were the only reason to watch this show.
by Anonymous | reply 27 | April 14, 2023 7:20 PM |
In terms of the dialogue, I recently read an interview with the show runner, who said each episode script was 50% longer than a standard script, based on the pace of delivery. I’ll miss it, such a unique and excellent show on so many levels.
by Anonymous | reply 28 | April 14, 2023 9:38 PM |
Well they’re really rolling out the PR machine for the final season.
by Anonymous | reply 29 | April 14, 2023 9:56 PM |
Rachel Brosnahan is not Jewish! Couldn’t they find a Jewish girl to play the role?
by Anonymous | reply 30 | April 14, 2023 9:58 PM |
Amy Sherman-Palladino and her dumpy body and her stupid hats. What a fucking hack. She and her hubby constitute one hack.
by Anonymous | reply 31 | April 14, 2023 9:59 PM |
That subway scene is episode 2 was a surprisingly accurate depiction of how to take the train from UWS Riverside Ave to midtown east. They got every platform and staircase right.
(Just a pity that Milo V can’t do comedy.)
by Anonymous | reply 32 | April 14, 2023 10:00 PM |
Loved the TWA terminal scenes but that didn’t building open until 1962, a year after the first episode takes place!
by Anonymous | reply 33 | April 14, 2023 10:06 PM |
Yeah, just like they had in another episode a Streisand song playing a few years before it even came out. Sloppy. They spend more time on the costumes and decor than other details. It's so ersatz.
by Anonymous | reply 34 | April 14, 2023 10:10 PM |
I still laugh at last season. There was a scene outside the Cherry Lane Theater. It had rained before they shot the scene and there were still puddles on the street. As Marin Hinkle is walking away from the theater you can see her nudging Rachel Brosnahan to the left in order to avoid stepping in a puddle.
by Anonymous | reply 35 | April 14, 2023 10:18 PM |
^^Just to add, the director had them walking down the middle of the street, to get an atmospheric wide shot, rather than using the sidewalk. Hence the need to elbow her costar.
by Anonymous | reply 36 | April 14, 2023 10:21 PM |
This show really had a spectacular fall, no?
by Anonymous | reply 37 | April 14, 2023 10:29 PM |
I loved the first season, kind of liked the second (loved the guy in the swimsuit), and the third wore me out by episode 3.
by Anonymous | reply 38 | April 14, 2023 11:05 PM |
Why does Milo progressively get worse as an actor with each role?
by Anonymous | reply 39 | April 15, 2023 12:04 AM |
He was never any good.
by Anonymous | reply 40 | April 15, 2023 12:15 AM |
R40 Which is why it’s even more shocking.
by Anonymous | reply 41 | April 15, 2023 12:17 AM |
Why does this show spend so much time with the father writing theater reviews, it has nothing to do with Mrs.. Maisel?
by Anonymous | reply 42 | April 15, 2023 12:24 AM |
To give Tony Shalhoub something to do, R42.
by Anonymous | reply 43 | April 15, 2023 12:25 AM |
He’s a supporting character on this show, he needs to support and not try to steal focus
by Anonymous | reply 44 | April 15, 2023 12:27 AM |
He's also the best actor on the show.
by Anonymous | reply 45 | April 15, 2023 12:28 AM |
So the hats get bigger with each season, shouldn’t they be disappearing as we move forward in time?
by Anonymous | reply 46 | April 15, 2023 12:29 AM |
R45 Then was does he come off as a autistic, like many on this board rail against?
by Anonymous | reply 47 | April 15, 2023 12:31 AM |
I don't know what you're talking about, R47.
by Anonymous | reply 48 | April 15, 2023 1:19 AM |

Oh FFS. You should feel grateful they've not given the role to Sara Porkalob or Laverne Cox.

The time jumps are an interesting construct for Season 5.
by Anonymous | reply 50 | April 15, 2023 6:15 PM |
Joel’s tits in episode 3 are sublime.
Why was Susie freaked out by the photo of the tv host and his wife?
by Anonymous | reply 51 | April 16, 2023 12:53 AM |
OK. I watched the first three episodes. Clearly it is 1960. Kennedys moving into the White House, etc. And the time jumps are well done. I needed more Luke Kirby, but other than that I enjoyed it.
by Anonymous | reply 52 | April 16, 2023 3:49 AM |
They’re clearly in wrap-up mode, clearing out everyone who isn’t family (or Susie). Bye Lenny and Mei!
by Anonymous | reply 54 | April 16, 2023 12:04 PM |
I think I don't like Midge. She's becoming very selfish and unlikeable. I thought she would mature and grow. But she is way too self involved and she is not going to change. The Mike Wallace interview did it for me.
by Anonymous | reply 55 | April 16, 2023 12:11 PM |
There seems to be a slender possibility that Lenny might make one more appearance. He's not going to die until 1966.
by Anonymous | reply 56 | April 16, 2023 12:12 PM |
The fifth season seems to be much better than 3 and 4, so far. No stupid, pointless musical numbers, and I love the future footage.
I regret that I did not work on costumes for this.
by Anonymous | reply 57 | April 16, 2023 12:15 PM |
So can we assume that to a certain extent, Midge Maisel is based on a Joan Rivers type?
by Anonymous | reply 58 | April 16, 2023 12:25 PM |
More annoying than the overly energetic, rapid fire dialogue is Midge’s manipulative way of prefacing the meat of her words with throw away stuff designed to make sure the focus of attention is on her, personally, not the content of her words. It was especially noticeable in the writers’ room scenes.
by Anonymous | reply 59 | April 16, 2023 12:29 PM |
The actress playing Mae had scheduling conflicts and Lenny is beginning his long goodbye and they don’t want to cover it.

[quote] The actress playing Mae had scheduling conflicts
How do you know that, R60?
by Anonymous | reply 61 | April 16, 2023 2:19 PM |
I envy Rachel for having the delectable Jason Ralph as her real-life husband.
by Anonymous | reply 62 | April 16, 2023 2:36 PM |
The flash forward scenes portray Midge as a real asshole and a terrible mother. I approve.
by Anonymous | reply 63 | April 16, 2023 2:37 PM |
She was a selfish cunt way back in the first season.
by Anonymous | reply 64 | April 16, 2023 3:12 PM |
Stephanie Hsu (Mei) was just nominated for an Oscar and has several upcoming projects.
by Anonymous | reply 65 | April 16, 2023 3:15 PM |
The scripts were written before her several upcoming projects, R65, and before her Oscar nomination. She would be obligated to her contract with the series. They cut her part down because once they made her pregnant she was an unsexy and nowhere-to-go character.

R67 seems to think Maisel is completely believable and authentic, poor dumb bitch.
by Anonymous | reply 68 | April 16, 2023 3:56 PM |
What makes you think she had a contract, r66?
by Anonymous | reply 69 | April 16, 2023 3:58 PM |
Every actor has a contract on a tv show, R69.
by Anonymous | reply 70 | April 16, 2023 4:27 PM |
Wrong, but okay.
by Anonymous | reply 71 | April 16, 2023 4:36 PM |
Which is the greatest sin—that Midge is mean and selfish, self-destructive or not funny?
by Anonymous | reply 72 | April 16, 2023 5:00 PM |
No, R71, it isn't incorrect. When an actor takes a role, they sign a contract per SAG-AFTRA.
by Anonymous | reply 73 | April 16, 2023 5:09 PM |
Besides which, no production company or studio works around the schedule of any actor unless said actor is the star of the show, and even then, they are often not let out of their contracts to take other acting jobs while being hired to work on the show or the movie they're on.
by Anonymous | reply 74 | April 16, 2023 5:17 PM |
I truly enjoy this show. It's not great--like The Sopranos, Mad Men, Succession--but it is highly entertaining. Season 3 was mediocre at best, but it recovered in season 4.
My biggest gripe has been (until late season 4) that Midge is a winner always--even when losing. She's always portrayed as endlessly desirable--by men and women--and never seemed damaged by divorce or professional failure. Also, no negative consequences to being a highly neglectful/unengaged mother.
That started to change midway through season 4 and, in season 5, the show is finally focusing on the dark consequences of her choices. I wish the flash forwards were established earlier in the series to off-set some of Midge's superficial charm. The dark turn has made her a much more interesting character and the flash forwards have made it a much more interesting show.
by Anonymous | reply 75 | April 16, 2023 5:20 PM |
How predictable that Gordon Ford would be enchanted by Midge.
by Anonymous | reply 76 | April 16, 2023 5:22 PM |
[quote]My biggest gripe has been (until late season 4) that Midge is a winner always--even when losing. She's always portrayed as endlessly desirable--by men and women--and never seemed damaged by divorce or professional failure.
I agree with you there, but that was part of the show's entire concept. Midge is the fantasy of the young pretty smartly dressed ethnic white woman as endlessly and unfathomably adorable--it's a common fantasy many Jewish and Italian women on the East Coast have. (I remember when Wendy Wasserrstein kept going on and on about how adorable she found Monica Lewinsky when the latter did her interview with Barbara Walters.)
[quote]Also, no negative consequences to being a highly neglectful/unengaged mother.
You're not paying attention. In the flashforwards, we see her daughter has grown up to be estranged from her selfish mother.
by Anonymous | reply 77 | April 16, 2023 5:57 PM |
And Ethan, too. He doesn’t even tell her he’s getting married.
by Anonymous | reply 78 | April 16, 2023 6:53 PM |
Midge seems like someone who has emptiness at her core. On an emotional level she's 13 yrs old and she never gets over it.

by Anonymous | reply 80 | April 16, 2023 7:38 PM |
It’s the 5th season, when is the “Marvelous” part going to kick in, or was that always supposed to be ironic?
by Anonymous | reply 81 | April 16, 2023 8:49 PM |
Reid Scott is hot.
by Anonymous | reply 82 | April 16, 2023 9:19 PM |
I hop we see Midge's parents die painfully.
by Anonymous | reply 83 | April 16, 2023 11:03 PM |
I like Midge's mother, but the character of her father has been insufferable.
by Anonymous | reply 84 | April 16, 2023 11:04 PM |
I did read it, R80. Palladino is making an excuse for why they didn't keep her in the show.
by Anonymous | reply 85 | April 17, 2023 2:26 PM |
Bullshit. You don’t build up a character into a pivotal plot point and then drop her for kicks. It is a fact that the actor had other commitments.
by Anonymous | reply 86 | April 17, 2023 4:28 PM |
You're naive, R86. The storyline sucked and they knew it.
by Anonymous | reply 87 | April 17, 2023 4:34 PM |
Well there really was no place for Mei to go. If she and Joel married, doe she continue with school? Does she go to Chicago? Do they do the long distance thing? The story arc for them was running out. If they'd stayed together, married, had the baby, she becomes a doctor, etc. they either become a sidebar sitcom or a spin off series.
by Anonymous | reply 88 | April 17, 2023 5:11 PM |
I don't want this to be the last of Lenny. I got goosebumps every time he entered a scene. Luke Kirby deserves a much better fade out than that airport scene.
by Anonymous | reply 89 | April 17, 2023 5:14 PM |
"It smelled like oolong and ash." I love Midge's mom and her fabulous coats so much.
Does anyone know why Susie was freaked out by the photo at the end of the third episode? Who was that woman in the photo?
Michael Zegen has such a nice body. Buff, but in a relatable way, if that makes sense.
by Anonymous | reply 90 | April 18, 2023 4:49 AM |

R98 Watched the episode last night, and all I can say is WOW ! He looked great. I don't think he had that body the past few seasons.
But this is taking place in 1961 - truly, no guys had muscled chests like that back then at his age. No man was going to a 'gym' since there were so few around. No guy was eating healthy and keeping their bodies in shape like that. They may have been weight-proportionate, but not developed like that - especially their arms.

A little on the nose, but I admit that I laughed aloud, r107/Elderlez. I seriously dislike Amy Sherman-Palladino's writing. She is known for stealing material and not attributing it. She won't even call them homages, claiming them as her own. The trashcan dance in the most recent episode was a lift from Gene Kelly, and the group dance in Sophia Lennon's telethon was stolen from Bobby Banas.

I would like to see a film about the real Joan Rivers (DL icon), but am not sure who could play her. Kristen Wiig as adult Joan?

My ABSOLUTE favorite scene of all time was when Susie crashes some lady’s funeral, the actor himself had died and Susie touched on an emotion I get every time someone dies and I don’t find out until months later, because some self absorbed cunt forgot to tell me.
My great dad had a huge send off of a funeral, where the entire town and hundreds of people showed up to pay their respects on a July 4th weekend, so it’s really hard for me to see no one show up for a funeral.

There has been no diminution in the beauty of the clothes. I don't know that they're keeping up to period, exactly, but the period they're stuck in is more stylish anyway.
I am continuing the policy I've had since halfway through Season 2 of fast forwarding to the next outfit of Midge's or her mother's, or watching with the sound off while doing a crossword. I loathe Sherman Palladino's work, including all her characters, but all hail the costume designer.

Just saw the most recent episode, that was tremendous from start to finish. Borstein nailed the look and the mannerisms of the old manager cunt who's seen everything and is tired of everyone's shit. The way she rolled up to her roast and was the first to leave in particular made me laugh.
by Anonymous | reply 136 | May 7, 2023 11:45 AM |
I loved it, but thought it was a little over the top at times. The Midge storyline was annoying, but I guess they had to come up with a way to get her mostly out of there so they could create a great episode. It really was great television.
Nobody watches the show for Susie’s clothes, but I thought the styling and clothes for her more mature years were fantastic. She evolved into a more professional, sophisticated version of herself. Susie dressed exactly like a man and being a successful agent in the decades of her career would not have made sense.
I really enjoyed the scene Susie has with Ford’s wife in the prior episode. I wish they’d had more time to develop that storyline.
Midge never bothered me that much before the last few episodes, but good god she is awful. Her “snappy delivery” makes me wish a bus would hit her. Not that they give her great material. Her stand up routines are terrible.
by Anonymous | reply 137 | May 7, 2023 12:56 PM |
It's famously impossible to write good stand-up for a TV show. I find it better than similar efforts in that regard.
by Anonymous | reply 138 | May 7, 2023 1:02 PM |
I imagine if TV writers could succeed at stand-up, they’d be doing it.
by Anonymous | reply 139 | May 7, 2023 7:14 PM |
SNL has managed to do it for a while. Yeah there have been some bombs and bits that didn't work, but t hey've managed.
by Anonymous | reply 140 | May 8, 2023 2:46 AM |
They write skits, not stand-up.
by Anonymous | reply 141 | May 8, 2023 3:16 AM |
Sherman Palladino wrote a character who was a comic and therefore was tasked to write standup routines for that character that not only were funny but should have allowed the audience to believe the character, through her standup, was charismatic and appealing. Sherman Palladino failed in this for five years. Midge was miserably unfunny throughout. Sherman Palladino should have hired actual comics who could have written funny standup sets instead of the crap she wrote.
by Anonymous | reply 142 | May 8, 2023 11:52 AM |
That's been such a small part of the show looking back now, I really don't get this hangup all these years later.
by Anonymous | reply 143 | May 8, 2023 12:10 PM |
I think the reason some of Midge's bits weren't as funny as we hoped is because we weren't just seeing a one dimensional comic doing their routine as we do when we watch an actual stand up performance. We are seeing her as a fully realized person with a back story and a life beyond the stage. And even more important we are seeing her in the earliest stages of her career, and watching how it progresses along with all the bumps in the road. Living in an apartment, losing it, buying it back, having parents, children, an Ex, and in-laws, riding in cabs, getting bad bookings, etc. So we have a totally different context to see the character in, as opposed to the background we'd fill in and invent for some comic we see on TV, or at a club.
by Anonymous | reply 144 | May 8, 2023 1:07 PM |
Huh, see what I'm thinking when I watch Midge's standup routines is how much I'd like to suck on Joel Maizel's beautiful tits and maybe jack off on them...

Midge is based on Joan Rivers. If you ever watched an early Joan Rivers routine, you realize that only about one of every five of her jokes were funny. Midge has never gotten as mean as Joan was during her “fat Elizabeth Taylor” era but Midge’s comedy is 100% early Joan Rivers.

I know a lot of you loved that Susie episode, but they are spending to much time on the side characters for a final season when they should be concentrating on Midge. I’m still awaiting something to justify the qualifier of Marvelous and quite frankly I don’t think it’s going to get there by the end. I certainly don’t care about the cook/maid getting married and I’m sick of her parents especially the father. I only know Tony from that Tucci restaurant movie and people have always said he’s a good actor, but he just comes off as autistic and irritating in this and a very little goes an extremely long way. If anything the Lenny Bruce character should have been bumped up to main cast and the time spent should have focused on him and Midge. And the actor who is Rachel’s real life husband seems completely a nepotism casting and pointless. At least he’s cute, but he’s almost indistinguishable from the talk show host and they seem the male equivalents of Shiska goddesses for the Jewish woman to work off of and spark.

[quote], I recently read an interview with the show runner, who said each episode script was 50% longer than a standard script, based on the pace of delivery.
I wonder what percentage longer was the script for West Wing or That Sportscast Show With Felicity Huffman and Josh Charles that Flopped

"Sherman Palladino failed in this for five years. Midge was miserably unfunny throughout."
You're wrong and the whole point of the series was that her real life was often funnier than her stand up. The character of Midge is funny as fuck. Her stand up routines are funny given the time period the series takes place in. What people found funny back then is really different from what we find funny here in 2023.
I love the show and am sorry to see it go. It's been great this season but nothing can top the Catskills episodes.

R147 Susie isnt a side character, she's as much of a lead as Midge, and has been from the start.
by Anonymous | reply 150 | May 10, 2023 9:16 AM |
Everyone but Midge is a side character, just like Maude was about Maude and The Mary Tyler Moore Show was about Mary. Everyone else is supporting, it’s right there in the title.

I prefer when shows dump all the episodes at once. Because it givens continuity. I can't remember from one week to the next. And I lose the atmosphere created by the show which, IMO is key to appreciating it. You watch an episode, you react to tension building or you pick up the nuances, an d then it evaporates. Ofcourse I know why they do it. If you want to watch a particular series, and you binge it, the way the streaming services are set up, you can cancel them after you binge. Where as, with one episode a week, they get more $$$ out of you.

R148, The West Wing scripts ranged from 5,000-7,000 words. The Ozymandias episode of Breaking Bad, for comparison, was 3,200.

Mrs. Maisel is not without its flaws, but overall, this show should win Emmys. It is very unique. I'm loving everything about it, especially the clothes and Midge's parents are hilarious. Joel's parents are more slapstick, but I still love them too. And don't get me started about Lenny Bruce/Luke Kirby. Damn he is sexy. So glad t hey're doing another series and he will be the central character. Luke, not Lenny.

I enjoy the two leads but I’m not sure why Tony Shaloub at The Voice is a necessary subplot. Nothing interesting happens there. The Joel and Mei storyline was long and dull. The matchmaking with the lead character’s was okay but that went on too long. The show only finds it’s groove when Brosnahan or Bornstein are onscreen.
by Anonymous | reply 177 | May 16, 2023 11:50 AM |
Agree. How much time was wasted on Shaloub's misspelling of Carol Channing's last name?
by Anonymous | reply 178 | May 16, 2023 12:00 PM |
R177 the characters are well to do New Yorkers in the 60's and the Village Voice was a Leftie progressive news paper finding its footing back then. And since they are Jewish, the whole match maker thing is really important. It was a thing back then among the affluent Jews, even if you weren't Orthodox. Joels father being in the garment industry, and Joel running a night club, all of it, all those characters give us a flavor of the times and the place.

I can’t believe they fucked up the chance to have Helena Bonham Carter reprise her role as Margaret, the could have carved out a hundred thousand from the bloated costume budget and hired her for the cameo. It’s unrealistic that every outfit everyone wears is new each time. People had a few good outfits they wore in rotation. Those clothes at this point wouldn’t fit in the Classic 8.
by Anonymous | reply 186 | May 21, 2023 9:43 PM |
Helena Bonham Carter is 20 years too old to play Princess Margaret in the mid 1950’s
by Anonymous | reply 187 | May 22, 2023 12:34 AM |
R187 she didnt play her in the 50s. She started playing her in the mid 60s. Still a bit too old at that point in Margaret's life but not 20 years too old.

I'm not familiar with Carol Burnett, but my god that segment of hers was everything. Was she really this spellbinding in real life?

Susie has always been my favorite character throughout the series. Her delivery is so spot on, I was even laughing my ass off at that silly skunk joke. The golden mules she was wearing were a nice touch too. Where was she living with all those parrots? Mexico?
Overall I think the ending was perfect.

I would have placed Susie in her late 70's early 80's. Midge would be in her late 60's early 70'.s. I don't think they were more than 6-8 years apart. Susie just looked really bad compared to Midge. the JAP.

by Anonymous | reply 214 | May 29, 2023 5:53 PM |
From the start, Midge had sharp edges. I don't think she was ever this endearing Jewish housewife. She was emotionally brittle, and mouthy, and competitive. Certainly not your typical housewife in the 50's and early 60's. She was even kind of obnoxious. Her friends loved her sense of humor and her audacity. But the character was always "performing." She did it to submerge her feelings, she did it as a protective shell against feeling hurt, and she did it to hide or soften her ambition. (not very successfully in that last one.) Even when we were rooting for her, on her side, she often did things that were infuriating or seemed inexplicably cruel. Maybe Joel cheating and leaving her was a huge trauma she determined to never feel that bad again. She needed to prove how tough she was after that. To recover and succeed. But Midge was not a likeable heroine.
