The Shelley Long comedy 'Frozen Assets' (1992)
I just read an article where Siskel and Ebert agreed it was the worst film they ever saw.
Had no memory of this whatsoever, but I looked it up: a comedy about a sperm bank, with Shelley as a doctor. A weird mix of costars, including Corbin Bernsen, Dody Goodman (!), Jeanne Cooper, Jenifer Lewis and Paul Sand.
This would have been when Shelley's movie career was reasonably hot. Does anyone remember seeing it?

Was Shelley's movie career ever hot? She gave up a good thing on Cheers to pursue movies and I don't remember any good ones.

Long booked her best movies just before and during her Cheers years (1982-87). That isn't to say Night Shift, Irreconcilable Differences, The Money Pit, and Outrageous Fortune are comedic masterpieces, but they're all fairly entertaining movies with good co-stars and some good filmmakers involved.
Things went south after she left Cheers. I don't know whether it was bad judgment, bad management, a bad reputation (she did have the "difficult" label by then), or a combination. I know Troop Beverly Hills has a fan following, a development that seemed unlikely when it bombed as a new release. Most of her other post-Cheers movies, such as Hello Again and Frozen Assets, are obscure, as are her later sitcom vehicles. (Reminding me that Michael Patrick King based The Comeback's Valerie Cherish in part on her. The early-'90s sitcom Good Advice was their shared "Room and Bored.")
Her post-Cheers career highlight may be a two-part miniseries about a woman with multiple personalities, called Voices Within. It got huge ratings in 1990.

She was pretty great as Jay Pritchett’s first wife on Modern Family. I’m glad she got a decent role after all that schlock. She was also strangely appealing in a really dumb 2011 Hallmark Xmas movie with Bonnie Somerville and Jordan Bridges.

Long also got good reviews for the Robert Altman film, Dr T and The Women. Not a great movie but she was great.

And how could anyone forget her iconic turn as Carol Brady? As a 90s kid, that’s who I knew her as.
