Browsing through the Wayback Machine gives a nice glimpse into what DL used to be like.
by Anonymous | reply 4 | March 19, 2023 9:26 PM |
How quaint.
by Anonymous | reply 5 | March 19, 2023 9:35 PM |
come on, and no offense I know many of you were young when on DL on the 90s, so your not an eldergay. Its just an expression.
by Anonymous | reply 6 | March 19, 2023 11:15 PM |
It was nervous watching its T cell count drain away
by Anonymous | reply 7 | March 19, 2023 11:39 PM |
Who were the DL stars back then. Who fucked Tom Selleck. I know some of you dinosaurs must still be around.
by Anonymous | reply 8 | March 19, 2023 11:55 PM |
DL didn't really take off until 2000 or so—in the '90s, it was honestly kind of dull. Is He/She Gay? was THE hot gossip site until it imploded due to the boards-on-boards drama.
Billy Masters' Filth2Go was popular in the mid- to late '90s as well. Inexplicably, it's still going and he's still charging for gossip you can find anywhere.

The last great decade.

Oh, dear, sonny!
by Anonymous | reply 12 | March 20, 2023 12:27 AM |
I loved the satirical post someone did about the creation of the DL. They went through the whole first day of the DL.
And then on day two the post was "it was so much better yesterday." LOL
by Anonymous | reply 13 | March 20, 2023 12:29 AM |
They called it the site of dreams, OP.
And it was. It really was.
I can still smell the fresh paint.

Ellen was a big topic here and on IHSG before she came out. Mostly it was eye-rolling at stuff like her lame romcom [italic]Mr. Wrong,[/italic] being photographed making out with her sitcom co-star Arye Gross, and coming out as "Lebanese" on Rosie's talk show.

I wasn't aware of Datalounge until the George W. Bush years, so I can't say how it was during the 90s. But in the early 2000s, I found the board refreshing with its irreverent humor and love of all things theater, classic film, and celeb gossip.
I wish I were around during the whole "Cheryl's pussy stinks" era.
by Anonymous | reply 16 | July 7, 2024 3:11 AM |
The celeb gossip was the best. It came directly from people who worked in the industry and it was months before mainstream media printed it.
I miss those insiders. Where the fuck did they go?
by Anonymous | reply 17 | July 7, 2024 3:22 AM |
90s sucked, everyone was dying, Viagra had not yet been perfected and so lots of whisky/coke dick. Music and culture was cool though
Unpopular opinion - far more attractive guys today than then, and not by a small amount.

Chris O'Donnell should have made a sex tape during the year or two that he was hot - in the Robin mask of course.

I found DL in 2001 or 2002 via Usenet - alt gossip celebrities

It was merely a stop along the way for me as I explored the web, until 9/11. Yeah I'm one of THOSE. That 9/11 thread forever hooked me to this site. That most famous thread stands out but there were others running concurrently, in some cases people trying to reach friends who might have been affected. There were many gasps of relief when well-known posters returned after service outages. Everyone had been thinking the worst.

We used dial up 56k modems so you'd have to wait to download text and HTML.

There were several sub-forums. One was LESBIAN ISSUES.
by Anonymous | reply 28 | July 7, 2024 1:55 PM |
When I landed here in '99 there was a backlash against Matt & Ben, who apparently were a big subject the year prior.
by Anonymous | reply 29 | July 7, 2024 1:58 PM |
What lesbian issues?
by Anonymous | reply 30 | July 7, 2024 2:10 PM |
They had to get rid of the LESBIAN ISSUES forum due to lack of bandwidth.

David Ehrenstein trying to convince us that Julia Roberts really is a nice person just because she didn't ignore him completely at some event.
by Anonymous | reply 36 | July 7, 2024 6:56 PM |
I remember David Ehrenstein would cut a bitch over suggesting that Keanu Reeves was gay.

[quote]Eldergays, What was DL like in the 90s?
You mean the 1890s, OP?
That's when I started!
It was slow, the telegraph equipment was expensive (a lot of people couldn't pay the $1.90 annual fee) and the trolls were literal trolls who cut into the telegraph polls and posted the WORST recipes for succotash and flannel cakes and embarrassed the unmarried lady stevedores here with nude drawings of Mr. McKinley getting plowed by T. R.

Right, i do seem ot recall that
by Anonymous | reply 39 | July 8, 2024 12:29 AM |
I didn’t join until around 2001, but the biggest difference is that it moved SO quickly. I would try to read as much as could in the morning and then when I would come home from classes in the evening, I had pages and pages of posts to go through. (The threads moved so quickly; it was truly difficult to keep up!)
by Anonymous | reply 40 | July 8, 2024 12:37 AM |
Fascinating!!
by Anonymous | reply 41 | July 8, 2024 12:57 AM |
R40, I was also here back then, and your description was perfect. I’d check DL in the morning before work and in the evenings after work. I would even go home for lunch (pre-smart phones) to catch up. Now I can catch up on threads from throughout the day in the evening very easily.
